Modern Toronto Wedding

Something about the color yellow matches up so perfectly with the modern aesthetic, doesn’t it? Adele and Will wanted a wedding that blended their cultures, mixed vintage with modern, and brought in traditional elements with some updates on classic standbys. To capture their bright and cheery wedding day, the couple brought on photographer Tara McMullen who shot everything to utter perfection!

From the bride, Adele: We wanted to have a wedding that reflected us as a couple… not too serious with some personal touches. Our family and friends are very important to us so we wanted a day that they would enjoy as well. We had some vintage touches with pieces that came from our family (typewriter from my great grandfather, crates from my grandparents, galvanized tubs my grandparents used at their parties, a suitcase my great aunt received from her husband when she took her son home from the hospital over 50 years ago).

It was also important for us to include Will’s Korean background and have a traditional Pye Baek ceremony. We had the ceremony during our cocktail hour so everyone could see it and be involved. It was one of my favourite parts of the day.

Our colours were grey and yellow–I loved the way it turned out. The flags were a DIY project by my Mom and they turned out fantastic–she spent a lot of time making them and they were one of my favourite pieces. My sister made a picture frame from an old window with a picture of Will and I in it and used it at my shower… I loved it so much I wanted to include it on the wedding day. We put it near a our guest book which was also a frame — a caricature of Will and I on our first trip together in Quebec City.

We also collected all of the vases from consignment stores (Value Village, Goodwill) and vintage shops. We grouped them in three’s on a wooden slab on each table. There were vintage mason jars with flowers hanging from the chairs down the aisle. The backdrop for the ceremony was made using vases from CB2 and a curtain from IKEA. We had an amazing florist who understood the vision we had for the day. We also used a lot of pieces we already had… the A&W sign, lanterns, picture frames.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? We had a day of planner and she was amazing–we started working with her 2 months before the wedding day and she kept us so organized. It was an extra cost but so worth it–we were able to really enjoy our day knowing that we had someone looking out for us and keeping everything in order. Also, remember what the big day is all about and try not to get too stressed–family and friends travelled from all over to be at our wedding and we were so fortunate to be able to have everyone we loved and cared about in one place… that was most important to us and all the other details fell into place.

  • All of the details are to die for! I love the flowers in the suspended glass vases. I love the scrabble pieces and the beautiful straws. I love the grey and yellow colours. Just splendid.

  • WOW I love this. yellow and grey are my favourite colour combo at the moment and this wedding has executed it perfectly!. Love the hanging flowers and the stairs with all the flowers on it. just gorgeous!

  • Everything looks so wonderful! I am going to get married in a year’s time and I am also planning to have some vintage pieces there as I love vintage. I am from Ottawa and whenever I happen to be in Toronto I visit one of its amazing vintage shops. You may have bought some items from there too. I have already collected a few great vintage items for my wedding. I highly recommend visiting vintage shops in Toronto! You will love the great variety of things they have to offer.
