Oh, where to begin with this wedding. With a team consisting of Sean Flanigan, Jesi Haack, JL Designs, a dress by Amsale, and the incredible scenery of Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse, well, you just can’t go wrong, can you? Of course, newlyweds Hailey and Daniel came with their own dash of cool factor, describing their style as “modernist meets a fun night at a dive bar.”
From the bride, Hailey: Mid-century modern, Swiss modernism, fun night at a dive bar all describe our wedding aesthetic. Retro modernism in the country, colors: turquoise, yellow, orange, avocado; we had a lot of “film” touches. Our save the dates were slide viewers and a set of slides of our relationship and wedding location. The Kodachrome slide motif appeared on some of our printed material down the line. At the wedding itself, each escort card was an old fashioned slide with a picture of the guest and one or both of us or something meaningful from our friendship with the guest. Each table had a vintage, illuminated slide viewer that projected the table number. Once seated guests could put their slides in to view and share and chat about.
I had taken my husband to the wine country outside of Santa Barbara for his 30th birthday a few years back. We had a great time and fell in love with the area — a mix of beautiful vineyards, Danish kitsch, and cowboy bars. We’d long thought we might get married there. After we got engaged, we quickly ruled out doing a wedding where we live, in New York City, because we wanted something outdoorsy and more accessible to family and friends on the West Cost. We started looking in the Santa Barbara Wine Country. Once I saw the Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse online, I was in love. We went and looked at the place in person and it did not disappoint — despite its logistical complications.
Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Make hiring a good photographer a key priority no matter what your budget. The day/night goes so quickly; great photos are so important.
