What better way is there to celebrate your love than by filling your wedding day with nods to all the things you and your S.O. love? In Rachel and Jan’s case, a celebration filled with retro touches and nods to vinyl collecting was in order, with no shortage of other handcrafted details all captured by the lovely Heidi Benjamin.

From the bride, Rachel: Like so many, we wanted it to be a reflection of us. Which means lots of fun, tons of color, great food and equally great music in a not-too-stuffy, throwback setting. Our wedding was fun, bright, eclectic, and personal with tons of vintage details. Our theme was loosely tied to the idea of a “True Love Tour” because we actually had two celebrations and wanted a clever way to tie them into the invitations. There was a more involved celebration where we grew up in New York, and then a smaller reception with our friends where we now live in Denver after our honeymoon. I work in the music industry and my husband and I are both big fans of live music (and vinyl collecting) so we liked the idea of making a musical element a cornerstone of the setting. That theme was reflected in the paper goods, table numbers and the music itself. My husband is a brewmaster, so our venue choice of a concert hall attached to a brewery in the city we met was an easy one. The color scheme was largely mint, peach, yellow and some metallic accents, which we blew over the top with the flower wall.

Flower recipe: My bouquet was DIY from vintage brooches, while my bridesmaids (and Jan’s brideslady) carried monochromatic white bouquets made of mostly peonies, hydrangeas, mini roses and carnations with some greenery and other brooch accents. All of the handheld arrangements were wrapped in chambray from one of my late grandfather’s old work shirts. Table arrangements were mostly carnation, mini roses, baby’s breath and alstroemeria.

As far as DIY was concerned, the 8′ x 10′ flower wall was the largest, most collaborative DIY project. I ordered loads of tissue paper online and had my family and friends fold a bunch at my bridal shower in lieu of a game, which was way more fun! We spent the entire day before the wedding styling the wall. The brooch bouquet was the other time consuming project I had my heart set on. A lot of the brooches were provided by both sides of our family, which made it that much more special. It was well worth every broken nail! My hairpiece, the record-based/tiered dessert stands for donuts and the table numbers were also DIY, as were the flower arrangements. All of the flowers were in vintage glassware I collected at thrift stores and garage sales on trips home to New York, as well as while in Colorado; I carried a ton of glasses back with me for the wedding in my luggage.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Oh man, I hope you’re remembering to have fun! Having realistic expectations about the day, working with people you trust, delegating tasks, asking for help, and not comparing yourself too much to what’s hot on Pinterest are all key points. Really, this is going to be the best day of your lives, so keep that in mind with every step and you will make decisions that are the best for you both.
