Retro Brisbane Wedding

The bride’s vintage pin-up hairstyle, the flower girls’ poofy skirts, the intimate ceremony venue… all of these things add up to perfection. Steven Elmer picked up this wedding and knocked it out of the park — every image is a peek into how special the day truly was for the couple and their guests. There are loads more photos to be seen in the gallery, so don’t miss it!

From the bride, Tegan: More than anything we wanted a very relaxed, family-based wedding that children, including our own two girls, would be happy to be a part of. We went for a bright garden party style of reception at our place where everyone could be comfortable and enjoy each others’ company. There was also a bit of a retro feel that came from our love of 50s style, tattoos and rock ‘n’ roll.

Homemade, retro, casual, family, fun, rockin’ are a few of the adjectives I’d use to describe our wedding. We didn’t really have a theme, though we did use a lot of red, blue and yellow in our decorations, the central colours used in old school tattoos that we both love. We also had a bit of a retro 50s style running throughout the day, which wasn’t planned but came about from our own personal style.

There were a lot of DIY aspects to our wedding. We had the reception at home in our yard so all of the decorations were done by family. Most of the food was also made by family and friends, something we really wanted from the get-go because there are so many delicious things we love and grew up eating! My father-in-law did a special wedding homebrew beer, complete with custom labels, to celebrate the occasion as well! I made the flowers for my bouquet and my fantastic sisters and sister-in-law finished it off for me so that I had one less detail to stress over!

Tegan’s advice for future brides: I know everyone always says don’t stress over everything, accept help from anyone who offers etc, etc. But I also know from experience that it’s hard not to get wound up and try and do everything yourself! What I will say is the day before your big day do as little wedding-related stuff as possible. Go out for dinner and talk about everything but the wedding, spend time on your own reading a book, watching a movie or whatever. What is going to be will be and there is no point trying to change or finish anything last minute! Enjoy some wedding free time and on the day if things aren’t set up exactly how you wanted or the samosas don’t get served (yep, happened at my wedding), what does it matter? You’re marrying the person you love!

  • Thanks a billion! Gray + Tegan are super cool cats, I’m so stoked that they made it to Ruffled 😉

  • I am SO glad to see someone in a Fancy New York dress! I just got my dress delivered a few weeks ago from Mr. Nato and i couldn’t dream of a greater wedding dress shopping expierence. I have been schocked to never come across his name or designs on any wedding blog until now!

I want to spread the word on how great he is, although i am loving right now that no other bride has my dress!

  • Steve did such an incredible job capturing the day! We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer!

@Patti I haven’t seen anyone else in a Fancy New York dress either! Their dresses are so detailed and incredible to wear, I don’t know why they aren’t more popular!

And in case anyone was wondering (since I forgot to mention) the girls poofy skirts are from DreamSpunKids on Etsy.
