Palm Springs Wedding for a Creative Bride and Groom

Laycee and Jon’s wedding is so chock full of great design it’ll make your head spin. The creative couple (the bride is a designer while the groom is a cinematographer) had their hands all over the day, right down to the creative Save-the-Date video you’ll see at the very end. Laura Goldenberger and next saturday affairs did remarkable work on this one, as always!

From the bride, Laycee: We love the mid Century modern style of our venue Frederick Loewe Estate. The architecture has clean lines, geometric sculptures, design books with large Swiss typography, etc, which is all a cohesive design language used throughout our wedding. The surroundings of the venue is an expansive and beautiful desert-chic landscape. We used this contrast between geometry and organic shapes on everything from our invitation, place cards to welcome signs. We thought that this contrast creates more energy and interest rather than the hand-written, DIY look a lot of other weddings have.

Flower recipe: King protea was my favorite flower used in my bouquet. There were lots of succulents, air plants, palm leaves…

All the napkins and table runners were hand-made from a few different geometric patterned fabric we chose. All the table numbers were house numbers from home depot, spray painted gold. The little geometric shapes holding up the name cards were made from clay, cut into unique shapes and baked in the oven to harden. Quite a few of the geometric shaped terrariums were made from 90s lamps, with the light bulbs and cords removed. The 2 white columns with the clear casing on top at our altar were also custom made. I designed our own letterpress wedding invitation, all the place cards, name cards, welcome signs and all other collaterals. The wedding favors were designed by me as well: a pair of letter press coasters in black and white, with gold patterns. Our Save the Date was a collaboration between Jon and I. I design for a living and he produces video for a living. This piece is a perfect example of the magic we create together, and a “making of” teaser of the real wedding invitation.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I think the trick to planning a great wedding is to have a clear vision of your design aesthetic or theme from the get-go and stick with it throughout. Not to say everything needs to look the same, but if there’s a central theme threading everything together, the entire look will be cohesive. Changing minds about the look will often create disjointed experiences and confuse yourself as well. Also, do as much as you can but not over commit. Spend your money on the most important things like the venue and catering. It’s totally okay to let some of the smaller things go. They won’t have as big of an impact to your wedding as the venue and catering will.
