Jewel-Toned Rainy Day Wedding in Ojai

We are suckers for rainy day wedding and this colorful wedding in Southern California is no exception. High school sweethearts, Kelley and Ryan celebrated their 11th anniversary with a wedding. I mean is there a better way to celebrate? We think not! Alissa Hussey designed a gorgeous color palette bursting with fuchsia peonies, navy velvet napkins, and golden details throughout. Even with rainy weather, smiles abound in photos by Anya Kernes Photography that capture the essence of this stunning day: pure. joy.

From the photographer, Anya Kernes Photography: Kelley and Ryan are high school sweethearts, and wanted to get married on February 2nd because it was their 11th anniversary as a couple. Kelley is an animator who works at Disney, so naturally, she has a knack for incorporating bold colors for florals, which went like butter with the beautiful black bridesmaids dresses. Dark red, deep blue, gray and gold dominated their wedding palette with touches of velvet texture.

Their wedding happened to be on the same weekend there was flash flood warning across the Ojai/Santa Barbara regions (one of the worst in years!) and everything had to be moved indoors. The rain’s got nothing on this crew though – it was a gorgeous day with loads of inspiration for a winter wedding!

From the planner, Alissa HusseyKelley and I had fun planning the design concept for her and Ryan’s wedding. Much of the design was based off of a blue and white tile concept. Kelley and Ryan loved the richer, more wintery color tones, which is why we selected midnight blue, black, burgundy, slate grey. To add some warmth and softness, we accented these colors with blush, gold, and white tones.

We spent much time spilling over the tile concept and seeing how we could tie this concept across their celebration, without breaking the bank. We selected a few key areas to express Kelley’s love for tiles, which included invitations, dance floor, day of printed materials, and their custom escort card wall, in which guests could take home their own tile. For the dance floor print, we used the tile design from the back of their invitations. It also so happened, that Ojai Valley Inn recently re-did their carpets with a blue and white tile print- totally coincidental, but worked in our favor!

We selected luxurious, warm, smokey, grey velvet linens for the tables and incorporated the midnight blue in their napkins. The tabletops were graced with grey, blue and gold pieces to pull all the colors together. The sumptuous florals featured punches of color in burgundy ranunculus, garden roses, hanging amaranths, chocolate cosmos, and our personal fave – hellebores.

Kelley And Ryan, like a lot of couples, opted to do a smaller cake for the ceremonial cake cutting. Kelley and Ryan have a strong love for star wars, so it was only fitting that Kelley incorporate star wars cake toppers from Etsy. And instead of cake, they served donuts to their guests. The design team surprised them with a custom neon sign to go on their donut wall. This was a great place to include their wedding hashtag as well!

The end result of all the planning, was a wintery/springy mix, which worked perfectly with the location and the rainy day. Guests were greeted with moscow mules to warm them up and a warm lit, smokey grey draped reception space. The DJ kicked off the evening with a special playlist request from Kelley and Ryan, which featured music through the decades. Later in the evening 4 hours of dancing ensued and the dance floor was occupied for the entire night!
