A Homey Pennsylvania Wedding

You might recognize the gorgeous necklaces in this wedding made by the bride, Lisa. Lisa’s awesome jewelry shop, Tree & Kimball, is a sponsor here on Ruffled! Clearly, her impeccable style translated perfectly to her charming farm wedding. There were sweet mismatched details and handmade elements abound, which lent themselves perfectly to the homey and relaxed feel Lisa and Travis were going for. The day was artfully captured by Love Me Do Photography.

From the bride, Lisa: I am a vintage lover & collector through & through, so I knew that I wanted the wedding to evoke a nostalgic, well-loved feeling. And although we live in the city now, Travis grew up in the country down south & I grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest, so we wanted our day to be outdoors in a pastoral setting. Once we had that settled, all of the details just fell into place.

I started with a color palette of orange & lilac, but as things went on, that just became too difficult to stick to! I’m a great lover of color, so we simply decided the more, the merrier & left it at that.

I found Ash Mill Farm while searching & searching online for a nice rural setting in Pennsylvania. After speaking with David, the owner & innkeeper, i absolutely knew it was the place for us. The grounds were gorgeous & immaculately cared for, the rooms well-appointed & cozy, & David himself is so hopelessly charming. Add in the equally charming groundskeeper, Jesper, and you’ve got the whole package — I was (& am) completely smitten with Ash Mill Farm & couldn’t be happier with our choice to have the wedding there.

My sister wore a vintage dress embroidered cotton organdy dress from the 1940s that I found on eBay.

I made brooches for my mom & Travis’ mom, necklaces for Travis sister & sister-in-law, & my own necklace. The locket that hung from my necklace had my grandparents initials within it… I miss them dearly & loved having them there with us in spirit.

Our placecards were biodegradable tea bags filled with wildflower seeds & sewn shut.

Travis is easily the most laidback person I know, so I wanted to make sure that that was represented too! One of his only requests was to have sweet tea (spoken like a true Alabama boy) & chocolate chip cookies, & I happily obliged, adding lemonade & pie for my own sweet tooth. Our guests played badminton & horseshoes, relaxed in the hammock, & took strolls to visit the nearby horse stables. We had mismatched vintage linens on each table, striped paper straws, milk glass vases & pie stands, mismatched vintage china for our dessert plates… it basically felt like you were having supper in your grandparents backyard on a warm summer evening. Relaxed, surrounded by an intimate group of our favorite people, with comfort food & (bonus!) a bunch of cute little sheep & one impetuous little goat named Billie Jean… what could be better?

Our table numbers were hand screen-printed on muslin & put in embroidery hoops.

We had mixed berry & peach pies, along with chocolate chip, peanut butter, & fresh spearmint cookies in lieu of a wedding cake.

Travis’ mom & sister-in-law quilted the photo-booth backdrop that now graces our bed. I absolutely love it & am so grateful to them for taking the time so to make us something so beautiful & memorable.

My dress is an embroidered cotton organdy gown from the 1930s with matching jacket that I found on eBay.

Some advice from Lisa:

It doesn’t have to be as complicated as it seems! We got all of the big things out of the way at the beginning (location, photographer, caterer, rental company) & then took six months off from planning! We sort of flew by the seat of our pants a bit after that — I trolled thrift stores, yard sales, eBay, & Etsy constantly to collect my vintage linens, milk glass vases, & vintage ephemera. I found both my dress & my sister’s bridesmaid dress only a few months before the wedding & neither of them even required tailoring! The biggest thing that I learned about planning a wedding is simply that it is what you make of it — it can, of course, be stressful at times, but it doesn’t need to be a production. It’s your day after all & it only happens once… have fun!
