A Majestic Greenery-Filled Wedding in Maui’s Haiku Mill

couple kisses while their wedding party cheers

Like something straight out of a movie, Ross & Noa tied the knot at an old sugar mill in Maui, decked out in greenery ,where their bridesmaids wore incredible all-white power suits. To say that we are in love with with every detail designed by K.H. & Co. would honestly be an understatement. The perfect blend of glamorous and moody, we are obsessed with this greenery-filled wedding at Haiku Mill with a jaw-dropping hanging floral installation captured by the one and only Melia Lucida. So take a few deep breaths and be prepared to fall in love with this beautiful wedding.

Tell Us About the Proposal
It was the beginning of summer 2016, when I accompanied Noa on a “work trip” to Paris. He told me there was an important design conference that he needed to spend a few days at and I was obviously on board with tagging along. One the first night, we were strolling along the Champs Elysees when Noa suddenly stops in front of the Dior flagship (my favorite House), grabs my hands and pulls out a small red leather box as he drops to one knee. My confusion quickly turned to audible heart palpitations when Noa started to deliver a heartfelt speech. He then opened the box to reveal a Cartier 8 diamond gold love ring and asked me to do him the honor of marrying and spending the rest of my life with him. I remember shaking, but immediately saying, “Yes!”.

Then, Noa pulls out a medium sized Tiffany & Co. blue box with two Paloma Picasso gold rings (she designed them for her husband with 8 notches) and stacked them on either side of the Cartier ring on my finger. So there are three stacked rings with 8 grooves, 8 diamonds, 8 grooves – which is eternity in Asian culture. Crying, Noa then guides Ross across the street to L’Avenue restaurant and says, “This is not a work trip. We have six days in Paris to celebrate us…” At that moment, four of Ross’ best friends – from different chapters of his life – emerge while screaming congratulations with cocktails in hand! Ross was in complete shock.

How Did you Chose Your Wedding Venue?
We scoured the different Hawaiian Islands for months in search of a venue and planner that reflected our sensibilities, but nothing resonated. Noa and I share a deep love and appreciation for where we came from, but are just not the beachside, outdoor or hotel wedding type. After nearly losing hope and considering an intimate dinner in NYC as an alternative, I stumbled upon an Instagram photo of “Haiku Mill” and we were immediately bewitched. The historic site is the perfect fusion of Hawaii’s lush and natural splendor with old world European charm. We couldn’t believe this seemingly fictional place existed in Hawaii!

Tell Us About Your Wedding Theme
Inspired by Alfonso Cuarón’s vivid 1998 film adaptation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS — a gradient garden of green on GREEN. The film is one of our all-time favorites, particularly for its voluptuous cinematic style and beguiling vibe. It centers around Ethan Hawke’s character – an artist and painter from a small town who moves to the Big Apple (Noa and I both moved from Hawaii and have degrees in studio arts), but let’s be honest, we relate more to Ann Bancroft’s brilliantly eccentric Mrs. Dinsmore character. Her decaying manor is a dazzling monster submerged in shades of green and lush vines. Every outfit, wallpaper, car, side table, lamp shade is a different green – it’s amazing. Our main task for Mandy Grace Designs was to create a decaying-yet-majestic world of greenery that highlighted the Mill’s natural visage but as if we had “decorated the entire space 50 years ago and had left it to run wild…”
