Modern Austin Wedding

Oh goodness, are you ever in for a treat today. I swear, it’s as though someone popped into my dreams and pulled out my favorite ideas and decor elements and put them right into a wedding! Not only that, but our couple (Lindsey and Jim) hired an absolutely All-Star team to put everything together, including Two Pair Photography, Bird Dog Wedding, and Pollen Floral Art. Let’s jump in!

From the bride, Lindsey: We originally wanted to do the party-at-which-you-happen-to-get-married vibe, and we’re both still a bit surprised that we went a more traditional route! But keeping that sentiment in mind while planning, we didn’t over think things — just chose things we love. Like ice cream cookies. And succulents. And stiff drinks. Style-wise, we wanted our wedding to be pretty minimal, modern, architectural. And then we found this amazing converted cement plant in the hill country, complete with corrugated metal, farm tables, and donkeys. So it sort of became a study in contrasts.

Bouquet recipe: Grey succulents, warm red pincushion protea, white ranunculus, white hydrangea, grey dusty miller, gray brunia berries, gray kalanchoe.

We decided to go with mostly neutral tones – greys and golds and cool minty green – offset with small pops of bright red. I loved the idea of a bright color against warm wood backgrounds, and our wedding planner Emily Leach made these cool geometric paper favors that held macarons and doubled as table numbers. I DIYed the programs and menus and signs, and let the floral designer work her magic with succulents and terrariums. Originally we were going to have the wedding outside, and a last-minute rain threat brought us inside the giant screened-in porch. Instead of hanging our paper lanterns individually, Emily bunched them into a bold bouquet. It was great to let the industrial architecture (and the rustic hill country landscape) be the backdrop.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Choose three things that mean a lot to you (for us it was maybe the venue, the music, the photos), and don’t sweat the rest. It’s gonna be great. Also, don’t get too drunk at your party the night before, no matter how much sense it seems to make at the time. Oh! And hire a wedding coordinator, at least for the day-of. There’s so much to think about, and it felt great to leave the decision-making to someone else and just enjoy the day.
