Modern Colorful San Diego Wedding

Having grown up in southern California, bride Jasmyn knew that San Diego would be the perfect location to say I Do to her darling beau. The wedding that followed the careful planning process was a blissful blend of traditional and modern styles and ideas, all put together and carried out with the help of Next to Me Studios, Très Chic Affairs, and Bespoke.

From The bride, Jasmyn: I grew up in southern California so the only thing I had completely decided before wedding planning was that I wanted to be married there. We have family all over the country so we chose San Diego because it was somewhere that our relationship had grown over the years. It’s also the quintessential southern California city with beautiful beaches, great food and an easy attitude. I also knew that I wanted to incorporate our modern, creative tendencies into the traditions that we held dear.

As soon as we walked onto the grounds of Mission San Diego de Alcalá, we knew we had to be married there. From the beautiful gardens to the rich history (the mission being older that the United States), it was perfect for us. The terracotta and gold tones in the Mission became the basis of our color palette. I wanted bright colors but I didn’t want to pick just one or two so we went with shades of red, pink, orange and yellow with accents of gold. My dress is a great story. I wanted some sort of lace and when I went shopping with my friends and family, I realized that I loved the idea of having a train. The first dress I was going to buy, I saw with my mom and mother-in-law and it had the lace but not the train. Another dress had the train but not lace so I picked between the two. When I went back a month later to purchase the dress, the store had a dress that had both so I ended up buying that one on the spot alone. The lace ended up matching my mother-in-law’s veil, which I wore during our ceremony, so I think it was meant to be.

I turned to Pinterest and wedding blogs for a lot of inspiration like our seating chart and the gold bottle centerpiece. My talented and patient Maid of Honor spray-painted all the bottles, which were shipped and handed off to her from all over the country and turned into our impromptu wedding favors. Our reception was full of artsy vibes from the watercolor patterns on our menus to the marbling feature on our cake. We also had people sign a canvas instead of a traditional guest book so we could have something to put up in our home and remind us of that day. There is a tie on my favorite elements. It’s between the “Let My Love Adorn You” sign and the flower shelf the hung over our wedding party table. The sign was a last minute decision but perfectly pulled the room together. It’s also tied to my favorite moment – walking into our reception, feeling so much love and support and then my husband and I singing our song to each other. The flower shelf was just magical.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Hire a wedding planner. Honestly, it’s the best decision. If you only use him/her for the day or go for the full package, they are life-savers and stress relievers. Our wedding planner introduced us to one of my favorite vendors – our florist – who we would not have found otherwise and was a true professional who knew the tricks of the trade. My other advice is to prioritize in planning. I knew photography was a huge deal to me so I personally spent the most time researching that. I had to have my childhood priest do our ceremony so I spent months working on that. All the rest – let it go & marry your best friend.
