Art Deco Inspired Wedding
This wedding shot by Natalie Moser has me in a tizzy. In many ways, it reminds me of my own 1930s inspired wedding, but only way more stylish. Amber Events designed this wedding to the nines, and it’s chock full of simply beautiful ideas. Julian and Summer (a girl after my own heart) were recently married at the fantastic Cicada Restaurant in Los Angeles, and made it completely their own. In addition to bringing in dancing pinup models and cigar girls, the couple had their own stage made for their ceremony and for the swing band!
From the photographer, Natalie Moser: To say that this is couple is creative is an understatement: Summer, a costumer, and Julian, a writer, both love historic Los Angeles and vintage Americana and wanted to show their friends and family the LA that they love. Their rehearsal dinner was held at Marvimon House, a former Italian racecar showroom, and their guests were surprised by a retro slideshow by humorist Charles Phoenix. The day after brunch was held at the Oviatt Penthouse, the “castle in the sky”.
The Western Union telegram programs below bring me back great memories of my own wedding. Here’s my post on DIY telegrams. I included an editable envelope download to go with it.
The wedding itself was held in the most beautiful art deco building in Los Angeles: Cicada Restaurant in the Oviatt Building. As guests entered they typed a message on Julian’s childhood typewriter or wrote a postcard and “mailed” it in the old mailbox. The programs passed out were based on old Western Union telegrams that told the guests what was happening when. If anyone is familiar with Cicada you are aware that there is not a normally a stage in there–we commissioned an elaborate one to be built on which Julian & Summer could first have their ceremony then have our 13 piece swing band perform for the reception. Summer wore her hair in an old fashioned pin-up style with a birdcage veil and little strawberries pinned in it, and Julian wore a tie that Summer made for him: a peek-a-boo tie with a pin-up photo of herself and their dog Archie! The tie was such a hit that Summer decided to open up her own Etsy shop: The Peek-a-Boo Tie Shop.
During the cocktail hour the guest went to the bar upstairs as the staff flipped the space from ceremony to reception. A jazz trio played next to the baby Grand Piano and guests found their escort cards pinned to vintage dress forms. The reception evening unfolded with surprises for the guests with a vintage dress up photobooth, the Satin Dollz pin-up dancers, vintage cigarette girls passing out party favors, and even our gorgeous bride Summer changing into a little sailor outfit to serenade her new husband!
