Modern Turbine Hall Wedding
Throughout the years, one of the color palettes we’ll continue to love is grey and yellow. Somehow this mix always seems to conjure up a modern aesthetic, and that’s certainly the case for Mariè-Louise and Brad’s wedding photographed by the lovely Kikitography. Khali Collins of The Wedding Specialist was on hand to bring the couple’s vision to life, including every type of yellow bloom for a fresh tablescape setting!
From the bride, Mariè-Louise: When we began planning the many aspects of our special day, we looked to the internet for inspiration. We came across a lot of Vintage themed ideas, but didn’t fall in love with it. We decided to swap the trending country/vintage wedding for a JHB city center wedding with a lot of contrast Bright yellow tulips and soft candle light against the harsh but striking concrete and steel building where we had both the ceremony and reception. We wanted modern and fresh but more importantly, different! Daring, but it paid off in every way!
Bouquet recipe: Mix of yellow and white Tulips, Craspedia, Roses, Arum Lilies – you name it, we had it!
We did a JHB skyline theme throughout our stationery and decided to use famous JHB street names for table names in stead of numbers. Our color scheme was yellow and grey, ranging from charcoal to dove greys. Contrast was important to us and we wanted the day to truly reflect us – a city couple.
Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? There’s so much advise to give! Chief of which for us was to stay true to what we wanted. It is very easy to end up with someone else’s dream day, simply because suppliers don’t always listen to what the couple wants. There are so many ideas out there, going into a meeting with a planner not knowing what you want can sometimes lead to a couple walking out feeling completely overwhelmed and confused by it all. Make a list of things you are unwilling to compromise on, and another list that indicates what you are willing to be guided on in terms of different options available. It’s never an exact science, but it will help both parties if you have guidelines and pictures to work with. If you don’t like something, be honest. Don’t go along with it just because you feel you’ll be wasting someone’s time. You pay for it – you have to be happy with it! At the same time, accept that everything won’t be 100% on the day. Truth be told, it’s not about the ring, the dress, the flowers. It’s about your commitment to each other. No one will know if the cake should have been slightly to the left on the table, so don’t sweat the small stuff. Pick bridesmaids that you know won’t let you down. It’s important for you to feel you can leave things in their hands without having to check on them constantly. Sure, it’s nice to have all your friends up there with you, but my advice is to ditch the friends that you know have an unreliable streak. Leading up to the day you want to be able to delegate tasks that you just won’t have time for. Yes, you love your drama queen friend, but it’s your day – you don’t want to share the attention with anyone! This tactic saves money as well – less bridesmaids dresses to budget for!

Love the emotional contrast between wedding dance songs – ‘I’m Ready’ by Bryan Adams is so smooth, steady and romantic – whereas ‘In The Summertime’ by Mungo Jerry is so amusing and fun. I bet the guests had a tear in the first dance and a laugh during the father daughter dance!
Love the grey and yellow color scheme on the reception tables especially using various hues of those colors. The effect was stunning!
What strikes me about this is the stylised décor mixed amongst quite in industrious backdrop. It works really well on many levels. It’s very unique in its contrast. Well done chaps!
I just loved the settings of the hall. I have seen a similar setting in a wedding banquet hall in Toronto.
The candle placed over the table is really an added beauty! Stunning!
