Sweet North Carolina Wedding
This wedding sent by Whitney and Dustin of Oh, Darling! Photography is all about sweet country beauty. Kelly and Brian’s wedding had so many things to love: the Blue Ridge Mountains, the screenprinted handkerchiefs, and the wonderful charm of the old tobacco barn in which the reception took place. The most endearing detail? Kelly wore her mom’s vintage lace dress that her grandmother had handmade!
From the bride: We were inspired both by my dress, which my grandmother made for my mom’s wedding, and the loveliness of the venue and setting where we got married (which has an organic garden, old tobacco barn, and wild meadow). We wanted to incorporate as many vintage elements as possible. Because our venue was high up in the Blue Ridge mountains in a verdant and rather wild setting, we ended up with a vintage garden party theme – with lots of prints. I am obsessed with prints!
I wore my mom’s wedding dress, which her mother made for her wedding in 1976. She had kept it stored in a cardboard box and it was in amazingly good shape! My mom got married in NJ in April and I got married in the South in August, so the dress needed some updating for both weather and to reflect more of me and my style. Â We made a new under-dress (my mom’s was heavy satin) and removed the sleeves, made a more defined waistline, and that’s pretty much it. And I loved the results.
Keeping with the print theme, my ace seamstress aunt made table runners for each table, from fabric I picked out. I also wanted as much vintage tableware as possible – so all the vases were vintage milk glass and some friends lent their own vintage cake plates for the cake table – no styrofoam stands for us!
My awesome matron of honor made fabric garlands that we strung all around the deck. They looked fantastic and definitely helped set the cheerful, celebratory tone for the party!
Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Start early, try not to stress, pick a few key elements of the wedding that are important to you and don’t negotiate on them!

love this wedding! so simple and beautiful…oh to live in the mountains 🙂
Beautiful! I love her dress and my favorite shot has to be of the bride walking down the mowed grasses on her parents arms toward the ceremony area. Lovely distance shot. Simply perfect.
That is so special that her mom wore that dress and her grandma made it and that’s so great that she had her aunt make those sweet table runners!
Also, that location?! amazing.
And i was so proud to see it was in NC!

That dress is AMAZING! Simply stunning.
Lovely pictures! <3
How did you like Saffron, we’re thinking of using them for our wedding next summer.
Just to let everyone know, we did more than just alter Kelly’s dress! We totally restyled the dress and rebuilt it from the inside out. The original dress was beautiful and provided great inspiration.
Hello! My fiance and I are also having our wedding at Hawk and Ivy in September 2013 and are so excited! I love your idea for party favors…we have tons of fabric pieces. I know anything could be wrapped in those little delightful fabric balls but I was wondering what the favors were? Your wedding looks like it was gorgeous, and you are a beautiful bride!!
Hugs,
Caroline
