Huron Substation Wedding

Our heart rate quickens just a bit any time we see a wedding at LA’s The Huron Substation, and even a little bit more when we see that Sweet Emilia Jane is behind the wedding design. Emilia didn’t hold back in making Jenn and Stephen’s wedding utterly memorable, and we’ve got Zaugh Photography to thank for taking control behind the camera for the big day!

From the bride, Jenn: We wanted to throw a fun dance party where everyone could mingle and enjoy each other. Instead of a sit-down dinner, we opted for a cocktail party with fried chicken sandwiches, pickles, stoli doli’s (our family favorite drink), and non-stop dancing to Motown and funk. We started serving drinks the second people arrived and provided a school bus to take everyone back to the hotel at the end of the night so people didn’t have to worry about boozing it up.

We really wanted our family to feel like they were a part of the ceremony — being that it’s not just about us, but two families coming together. It’s a Jewish tradition to plant a tree when a baby is born. So we came up with an idea to have our parents and grandparents each bring a jar of dirt from their homes. Some of the dirt was from Canada, there was sand from a beach in Florida, Boston, California… Each family member got up, gave us a blessing, and put the dirt in a single jar. When our first baby is born, Stephen and I are going to plant a tree using that dirt.

Our wedding was truly a labor of love. We had so many friends step in and donate their time as a wedding gift to make our dream day come true. We’re so grateful to David Zaugh who shot our photos, Holly from My Floral Bliss who created our beautiful flowers, and Alix Hester who baked our amazing cake. And of course very special thanks to Sweet Emilia Jane. She made the day run effortlessly and transformed our space into something more beautiful than anything I ever pinned on Pinterest! We actually have this stunning art piece that she made hanging in our hallway. Every time I see it, I think of how unique and special she made our day.

Any advice for couples planning their wedding now? Make sure you have a few easy activities beforehand. We threw a shrimp and crab boil in a very confined space where people were forced to wear bibs and get to know each other. By the time the wedding came, it was more fun because everybody was friends. Plus I didn’t feel as pressured to say hello to each person on the day… more time for dancing! Second, hire a videographer. There’s nothing like having a beautiful video to immediately transport you back to day. The Why We Love were so amazing – if they’re anywhere near you, hire them right now. So worth the splurge.
