70’s Inspired Wedding With A City Hall Ceremony and Motown Dance Party
Roxanne and Cameron’s 70’s inspired wedding with an intimate ceremony at City Hall in NYC that culminated in an oh-so-chic motown dance party the following day. We love the way this couple embraced a two part celebration that allowed them to have an intimate *official* ceremony but still celebrate with all their pals later on. Bold color pops, baby’s breath hair adornments and an all-white-lily bouquet from a.p. bio are just a few of the magical ways R+C turned tradition on its head. With the help of NYC wedding planner Jove Meyer, their retro inspired day exuded joy, pure joy, at every turn. See what we mean in the A+ gallery from Sylvie Rosokoff below! We won’t judge you if her images move you to tears. They sure did that for us!
From the photographer, Sylvie Rosokoff: Roxanne is a writer and editor in New York (with recent bylines in Vogue, Domino and Elle), and Cameron is a software engineer. They met in college and by the time they got engaged in 2013, they’d been together for 7 years and had already built a wonderful little life together in New York with two cats. They took their time planning a celebration (5 years!) that perfectly represented them as a couple, planned by Jove Meyer, wedding planner extraordinaire.
Roxanne and Cameron officially tied the knot in a tiny ceremony at city hall in Manhattan, with only their very closest friends and family there, followed by an intimate brunch at Augustine. For their reception at Bathhouse Studios in the East Village, they took inspiration from Minnie Riperton, Solange, the old TWA terminal at JFK, bodega flower stands, Motown parties in Paris and more. Roxanne’s hair stylist hand-placed baby’s breath in her afro to create a gorgeous floral crown, and her vintage caped dress from LA-based Happy Isles Salon pulled together her iconic look.
Floral designer Doan Ly of a.p. bio created vivid floral arrangements and a photo booth backdrop inspired by bodega flowers, as well as an elegant, minimalist bridal bouquet of all white calla lilies. The highlight of their reception had to be the dancing: Roxanne and Cam flew in their dream DJ, DJ Reverend P, for a soul-, disco- and funk-filled set that had everyone on the dance floor until the last song.

What made you choose to go to City Hall first?
Roxanne: “Our original plan was to do a City Hall ceremony with a small group of family and friends We’re both fairly shy, so a lowkey approach felt like the right way to approach the celebration, but we also loved the idea of throwing a big party and creating an opportunity to see our loved ones from all over the country. In the end, we decided to do both—one day for a quiet, pared-back gathering, and the next day for a full-on dance party.”
What inspired your hairstyle?
Roxanne: “Since the vibe of the evening was already leaning towards a late ‘70s feel, the idea of an afro with baby’s breath å la Minnie Riperton felt like a natural choice. From a practical standpoint, it also allowed me to dance the night away and break a sweat without having to worry about a blowout or heat-pressed hair getting ruined.”
Describe your vision for the flowers.
Roxanne: “Rich jewel tones and sandy neutrals were sprinkled throughout, from bridesmaids dresses to linens, centerpieces, and decor. I’ve always loved a good bodega flower stand, and Doan Ly of A.P. Bio built an entire display stand from scratch that showcased a beautiful array of bright blooms that served as a photo booth backdrop and could be taken home as party favors at the end of the night.”
Tell me about the dance party!
Roxanne: “After spending an incredible night out dancing during a 2015 trip to Paris, we’d had this long-running joke/pipe dream that maybe we could convince DJ Reverend P, the force behind the party we’d attended, to come DJ our wedding. I decided to email him on a whim, and was so surprised that he wrote back and actually said yes. His specialty is Motown, funk, and soul, and we basically gave him the go-ahead to do whatever he wanted for the entire night.”
