Breezy Destination Wedding in Mykonos
Chiara and Simone traveled from their home in Italy to one of the world’s dreamiest destinations, Mykonos in Greece, to exchange vows in front of friends and family. They brought along Italian photographers Rossini Photography, and gave their guests a dress code of white for the men and Greek blue for the women, making the day a truly blue and white affair with only the lightest pops of peach here and there!
From the bride, Chiara: Mykonos Island is a magical place in Greece, which has a special meaning for my husband and me, and it was a natural decision to hold there our destination wedding, flying out all our guests from Italy, our country of origin. Mykonos is an essential part of our love story, and Mykonos had to be the place where our dream of a life together turned into reality. We wanted it to be a unique event, a truly memorable celebration for those who joined us on the Island (family and close friends, although we couldn’t cut down our list under 100 guests!). At the same time we wanted the mood to be relaxed and easy going, it was important to us that everybody felt at ease and enjoyed their time, like during a holiday.
It was difficult at first to plan everything from another country: I am a professional wedding planner, and have organized plenty of weddings in the last years, so of course I wanted mine to be perfect and at the top of my standards. However, having decided to hold a destination wedding in Greece and not in Italy, I couldn’t use my usual network of trusted providers (except for Luca and Claudia of Rossini Photography, who I flew over from Italy), and had to start from scratch. Needless to say how many times I went to Greece during the year to pick each and every detail! The wedding theme and color palette had to follow the colors of the island: white and Greek blue of course, but also sand, like its beautiful beaches, and the warm tones of peach, like its magical sunsets.
As a recurring element in decors and details we chose colorful pinwheels (the wind is a faithful companion on the island, hence the windmills everywhere!). For the flowers I had no doubts since the very beginning: I wanted them to reflect the island colors as well, an explosion of blue and peach, for which I chose garden roses and hydrangeas, nothing else. We decided to celebrate our open air Catholic wedding in the quaint white and blue square of a little church which raises on an isolated corner of the island, above the blue water of Agios Sostis bay… we knew that the stunning view and the typical Greek prettiness of the place itself would have left our guests without words! The guests were welcomed by a long table set with lemonade and the Greek refreshing Mastika to drink, and cherries to nip on while waiting for the bride. Lace umbrellas, fans, bells (for the entrance) and rice (for the exit), and even white and blue mason ball jars (which I shipped over from Arizona) to hold the flowers…every detail fell magically into place.
The bridal party moved form the church to Alemagou beach, where the reception was held, driving in a colorful caravan of Tuk Tuk, the typical means of transport on the island. Everything during dinner too was magical, the lanterns hanging from the ceiling, the table settings, the cushions on the sand, and the pretty corners set up with various giveaways for the guests: beach bags, mojito mixes, white and blue panama hats, dvds with the islands soundtrack… my husband and I really had fun putting all of these together! The wedding day was a dream come true, the best feeling was being able to read the amazement in our guests eyes throughout the day! But I couldn’t have done this on my own: the flawless execution of the day was possible thanks to the collaboration with two great professionals and wonderful people we hired in Greece: Panagiotis (The Twelve Events) and Vanessa (De Plan V).
