Woodland Garden Wedding

Romantic Weddings

Look no further if you’re in need of some wedding day inspiration that combines the beautiful woodland outdoors, stunning photos by Amberlee for Jessica Cooper Photography, and picture-perfect blooms by Larkspur Botanicals. This wedding, tucked away in the trees, has got the right amount of whimsy and romance and those two things have always gone so well together.

From the bride, Amory: My fiancé and I wanted to have a very intimate backyard wedding. We were going for a rustic yet simple style. The backyard was so gorgeous with lots of trees and greenery so we really wanted that to be a big part of the style.

Our day was romantic, fun and rustic. I went with a gold/blush color scheme. We had lots of DIY projects such as creating our seating chart. My father in law built the big piece of wood and stained it for us. Once that was done, my sister in law wrote all of the table numbers and guests names on our sign. It was one of my favorite pieces of the wedding. She also made our drink menu, ceremony sign and an “unplugged sign”. The unplugged sign was an important part for both my fiancé and I. We wanted people to really be there with us and share this special moment rather than on their phones.

We then shared our professional photos with our family & friends when we received them, which they loved. I created little cones with flower petals to have thrown once my husband and I walked out of the ceremony. I also created the table numbers. I bought lots of gold & blush picture frames and we wrote the table numbers inside of them. They were adorable and very easy to make.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Planning your wedding is half the fun! It may get crazy and difficult but stay true to what you want. Everyone will be happy if you are happy. Some of my best memories besides the wedding, were planning it. Such as buying my dress with my mom, cake tasting etc.

We also played Endless Love by Lionel Richie which was my in-laws’ wedding song. It was their 20th anniversary so we played it for them and let them have a dance. It was a total surprise to them and such a great moment.

Intimate Garden Wedding Ceremony

Garden Weddings

While we love a no holds barred wedding day with an elaborate reception, Danna and Gib’s wedding makes it clear that all you really need are two people madly in love (and maybe some cake). Emily March Photography celebrated the couple’s garden wedding ceremony — decorated beautifully by TreBella Florist — which was followed up with some tasty eats and tequila shots. What better way to celebrate saying yes to forever?

From the photographer, Emily March: Danna and Gib had the definition of a whirlwind engagement. Gib proposed this past February, only a few months before getting deployed overseas with the Army. Too excited to wait to get married, the pair opted for an intimate civil ceremony barely a month after Gib popped the question!

Pale Pink and Icy Blue Floral Arrangement

Flower Guide

Photos by:

Sweet Root Village

While spring might be the season that makes you think of flowers the most, winter is rich with its own selection of beautiful blooms and Sweet Root Village is here to help prove that point. The photography + floral design powerhouse put together a beautiful arrangement of flowers incorporating soft blue and sweet pink, perfect for Pantone’s colors of 2016! Let’s take a look:

Ruffled - photo by Sweet Root Village http://ruffledblog.com/pale-pink-and-icy-blue-floral-arrangement

From Sweet Root Village: This glamorous, wintery centerpiece is packed with lush ivory and pale pink blooms and completed with touches of icy blue textures. A perfect way to mix the 2016 Pantone colors of the year! The bulk of this arrangement is made up of blooms that can be found all year long, such as hydrangea, standard roses, and spray roses. These blooms can be found in such a huge variety of colors and translate well into nearly any sort of theme or style depending on how they are used!

pale pink and icy blue floral arrangement - photo by Sweet Root Village http://ruffledblog.com/pale-pink-and-icy-blue-floral-arrangement

Some of the more delicate blooms like Scabiosa and Ranunculus can be sourced most of the year, but they do have several off months that fluctuate depending on the weather. Evergreens and Firs can be foraged all year long, but are most used during the winter months of course due to the wintery feeling they add to arrangements and wreaths. Privet berry is another wintery element that is well loved for its deep blue colored berries! It’s usually available over the summer, but its berries are green! They slowly darken to the deep blue color we all love the closer they get to winter and typically finish their season by December. During the Spring months, the always lovely Viburnum is a great alternative! Eucalyptus silver bell pods are typically only found over the holidays! Get them in December and January before they bloom out and are hard to find.

Paperwhites are an extremely fragrant bulb flower that are usually found during the Winter months of November through March. The teeny, delicate blooms clustered in an arrangement add such a beautiful and unexpected texture! They are not expensive blooms, but they do quickly add up in an arrangement due to needing so many of the tiny stems to make any sort of impact.

paperwhites - photo by Sweet Root Village http://ruffledblog.com/pale-pink-and-icy-blue-floral-arrangement

This centerpiece could translate to a Spring arrangement by adjusting to add some stunning sweat pea on the vine and popping in a few fluffy peonies. Or to a Summer, rustic wedding by switching out the wintery textures for queen anne’s lace and seeded eucalyptus. Extra deep toned burgundy Dahlias and snapdragons with some dried hydrangeas would take this arrangement towards gorgeous Autumn route.

Parisian Botanical Garden Wedding

Garden Weddings

Goodness, we have so much love for this wedding. Thanks to its classic color palette and beautiful decor, it could easily have come out of any season of the year! Divine Light Photography captured the entire day, while Flowers & Flowers designed gorgeous bouquets and boutonnieres and the bride tackled all the reception flowers on her own.

Parisian botanical garden wedding - photo by Divine Light Photography http://ruffledblog.com/parisian-botanical-garden-wedding

From the bride, Juliana: We wanted our wedding to be soft and romantic. We wanted guests to feel as if they stepped foot into an intimate secret garden party styled wedding. We wanted to have some soft tones like blush while still having some pops of color like raspberry and other berry tones; colors that you would typically find in a garden! We definitely wanted to stand out and be a little different.

Flower recipe: The bouquet was done by a florist and I believe he used dahlias, astilbe, eucalyptus, spray roses and lisianthus. For our centerpieces we used dahlias, spray roses, garden roses, astilbe, eucalyptus, anemone, stock, dusty miller, and celosia to name a few.

There were quite a few DIY projects! The invitations were hand painted by my dad who is an incredible person! He is a French painter/artist who suffered a massive stroke. He lost his ability to speak but is still able to paint wonderful art. So he painted the invitations, table names (Places in Paris), the seating chart, ceremony sign, jelly jar signs, etc. He did the paintings and then John and I laid it out ourselves in Adobe Illustrator. We also collected milk glass vases and the pink French depression wine glasses, and we made our own mercury glass vases. The flowers were also DIY. We ordered and picked them up from a flower market in the South Bronx and had a close family friend help assemble them! I also painted our chair signs and our bike sign. John and I made the jellies with his aunt that we gave to guests as their gift. We also made a quilt sign and our Aunt will be sewing us our wedding quilt that everyone signed.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Don’t rush to pick vendors too quickly! We really did our research on each vendor and we were confident they would do a great job. Also, if you think you can do the flowers all on your own, you can’t. Make sure you have family and friends on deck to help assemble and transport to your venue! If you have a clear vision of what you want, make sure to express that with images. You can never be too detailed!

Romantic North Carolina Beach Wedding

Beach Weddings

Photos by:

Sawyer Baird

Today’s wedding is light, airy, and romantic — everything the newlyweds wanted, and everything a beach wedding should be. Sawyer Baird captured the entire day on film photography, a day full of inspiring floral design from Tildy Designs and expert coordination by Bridal by the Sea. Keep an eye out at the end for special sunset wedding portraits in a gold reception gown, because we’re pretty sure it doesn’t get any better than something that beautiful!

From the bride, Jessica: Austin and I would have been happy to be married at the court house so we really wanted to focus on simplicity and romance. We had a gorgeous venue to get married at so luckily it didn’t really need a lot of decorating… plus we had an ocean view and it really doesn’t get much better than that! I had some close friends who I have known for a long time and where directly involved with making the day extra special — the ceremony painter, dress designer, ceremony vocalist — which was amazing! We aimed for Light, Airy and Romantic with personal touches and a Southern food theme.

I am a painter and a photographer by trade so the color palette was pretty hard for me — I knew the colors could easily get carried away because I don’t really have any one favorite. I would just have them all if I could! I tried to start with a pretty neutral color palette with blush and gold — I ended up with added hits of darker magenta added and splashes of green from the greenery. I hand painted some signs for the dessert table and for the menu. I also made gifts for the women (some coworkers of mine threw a breakfast earlier that day with about 25 ladies). They got simple tie string infinity knot bracelets with a little card that had an illustration of Austin and I on it. I also made the Thank You cards at the place settings. Also – my Mother made the ring bearer pillow from her own veil from when she got married.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? My best advice for a couple currently planning a wedding would be that something will inevitably go wrong — and when it does, the most important thing to remember is that this day belongs to you and your significant other so take time to soak it all in and enjoy it. I was so excited to marry Austin that I wanted to run right down the isle to him. Throughout the day when Id notice something that wasn’t quite right Id just look over at him and remember that this was the first day of our forever — it was only going to happen once and little things like napkin colors and too much wind wasn’t what was important… The most important thing was who I was leaving with and how much we love each other.

Pennsylvania Wedding with Soft Purples

Elegant Weddings

Soft shades of blush pink and lavender, fluffy peony and hydrangea floral arrangements, and one couple unbelievably in love — that’s the recipe for today’s wedding. Gloria and Mike’s wedding day was sophisticated, romantic, and elegant, and no one was better suited for the job of documenting the big day than film photographer Lauren Gabrielle Photography.

Pennsylvania wedding with soft purples - photo by Lauren Gabrielle Photography http://ruffledblog.com/pennsylvania-wedding-with-soft-purples

From the bride, Gloria: The look that we were going for was spring elegance with a touch of romance, which was inspired when I could not just choose one color for the bridesmaid dresses and ended up blending some shades of blush pinks and lavenders. I wanted our wedding to embody a fresh spring ambiance pulled together with a formal black tie event feel as well, to portray the importance of this day for both my fiance (now husband!!!) and I and our families, as well as to make the guests have a relaxed and fun time celebrating with us. So we decided to go with black tuxedos for the groomsmen, and fun colors for the bridesmaid dresses, and had a miniature bridal party with all the toddlers and kids in our families (who doesn’t love the laughter and joy kids bring to the ceremony when they walk down the aisle?).

Flower recipe: The factor that really pulled both the formal and soft looks together were our flowers: a blend of white and pink peonies, blush pink hydrangeas, lavender spray roses, garden roses, and pink ranunculus on the wedding cake, centerpieces, and my bouquet was mainly a soft pink and white peony, with white peonies for the bridesmaids’ bouquets.

Any advice for couples planning their wedding day now? Some advice I have for couples currently planning their own special day is to take time away from planning and spend it with the girls and guys who are so involved in your day (shoutout to the most helpful bridesmaids in the world!) and cherish the people who give so much to be a part of your day (for us it was our families). Aside from that, keep your eye on the overall theme and stick to it (it will be a lifesaver when it comes to the nitty gritty details). Also, my husband and I were a long distance couple for our whole relationship (Michigan and Pennsylvania), and I was also finishing nursing school at the time. I know there are plenty of other couples out there who are also juggling many many deadlines and milestones, and it is important to remember why you are getting married in the first place – to join paths with your best friend and the one you love most. It makes it all so much more fun and enjoyable!

Colorful Wedding in Cabo San Lucas

Beach Weddings

Who could resist a destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas? As the bride Madison says, “I wanted a very classy Mexican wedding that was as colorful and complementary to the Cabo surroundings as possible.” Thanks to these images from Ana and Jerome Photography and the skilled coordination of Yarai Peregrino, I’d say the couple nailed it!

colorful joyous wedding in Cabo San Lucas - photo by Ana and Jerome Photography http://ruffledblog.com/colorful-joyous-wedding-in-cabo-san-lucas

From the bride, Madison: Most importantly, I wanted a traditional Mexican feel with personal touches throughout. I also was determined to keep it gender neutral so that my husband enjoyed the décor as well. Considering it was a destination wedding we weren’t able to incorporate many DIY projects. However, the “Shake at the Kiss” maracas were a DIY hit!

I wanted to do something that would enhance the existing beauty of Hacienda. I wanted a lot of color but nothing matchy-matchy. Throughout the planning process, a lot of people asked about my “colors” and “theme” and I would honestly tell them I didn’t have either. I wanted a very classy Mexican wedding that was as colorful and complementary to the Cabo surroundings as possible. Chris and I have been together 10 years and we are lucky to share a lot of the same friends so we wanted to make everything as personal as possible to show our appreciation for their love. The most important part about the wedding for us (from the beginning) was having our pastor (Jeremiah Morris from First Presbyterian Church of Houston) there. It was also really important to us to have a great band that would have everyone dancing and celebrating – they lived up to that expectation! My mom and I left a lot up to our wedding planner, Yarai Peregrino, who exceeded our expectations. She chose the majority of our vendors and could not have done a better job matching them with our personalities. We were thrilled with the way it all turned out. It was the best day of our lives.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? My advice would be to let go and try to enjoy the process. Chris and I waited 10 years for our moment and we can honestly say it went perfectly. Neither of us could stop smiling the entire night. Your focus should be on one another and everything else will fall in to place.

Wedding Music:
First Dance: “Feelin’ Good Again,” Robert Earl Keen
We had a wonderful band and didn’t leave the dance floor! We requested (and they played) a ton of 80s rock music that everyone (from 10 year-olds to 80 year-olds) enjoyed. For the last hour we had a DJ play some of our favorite 90s hip hop songs – it was such a fun way to end the night!

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, and it’s a good thing because Gwen and Dan’s wedding had a surprise downpour right as the ceremony began. The couple took it all in stride, and it even made for lots of smiles and laughter all caught by the photographer, Pat Furey. Their plant-infused reception is full of incredible inspiration for any garden lover!

From the bride, Gwen: We envisioned the wedding to compliment the beautiful outdoor setting of Fernbrook Farms with plenty of personal touches that spoke to our style as a couple including antiques and our love of nature.

The colors were blush and dusty green. We had lots of DIY! We decided on planted flowers, herbs and greens for the centerpieces which the bride’s mother and sister planted. We made all of the programs, menus, escort cards/escort card display, favors and table numbers which all featured a floral paper I fell in love with from Rifle Paper Co that was a part of our wedding invitation.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Have fun with the planning and give yourself plenty of time for an engagement. We had just over a year of planning and I felt like it was the perfect amount of time to really enjoy the process. I had a timeline checklist I used on the knot which kept me on track of what I should be doing when. It also doesn’t hurt to marry a wonderful guy who is engaged enough where they give you an opinion, but not too involved to really just let you do your thing!

Oklahoma Garden Party Wedding

Garden Weddings

Garden party weddings are right up our alley, and all the better when they take place in the own bride’s family’s backyard. Kori and Jaron not only exchanged vows on family land, but they also had Kori’s sister, the gifted Danielle of Danielle Elizabeth Inc., behind the camera and handling the reins of wedding design and floral arrangements. Talk about talent!

From the photographer and event planner, Danielle of Danielle Elizabeth Inc.: As a wedding planner, I have had the pleasure of working with many brides who are all very special and unique in their own way, however there was something EXTRA exciting when my sister got engaged and gave me full creative reign over wedding planning, event, and floral design. It was a short engagement of only 4 months, which meant a full-time labor of love planning this backyard wedding at our parent’s country estate.

Bouquet recipe: Hydrangea, garden roses, spray roses, ranunculus, craspedia, hanging amaranthus, seeded eucalyptus.

Held in our parent’s front yard, the ceremony was a beautiful celebration of love between my sister and her husband. We had the ceremony arbor constructed specifically for this wedding. Built out of rough cedar logs we topped it off with an oil-rubbed bronze chandelier which now hangs in the home of the bride and groom. The chairs were arranged in a semi-circle pattern to allow for maximum viewing of the ceremony from all angles. The ceremony chairs were adorned with ivory satin sashes and burlap bows. The burlap bows were a fun DIY project created by me and my sister for the wedding chairs. The bride walked out the front door of her parent’s country home and down the aisle where she met her husband-to-be.

The reception began with the guests filing back toward the back yard where they found their escort cards (designed by Teresa Lang Design) attached to jute twine strung inside an old fireplace mantle, which I repainted and distressed for the wedding. That was a fun DIY project as well. The escort cards were a fun interactive way to get the guests excited about finding their seats. They were scratch off cards with their table number hiding beneath the scratch off sticker. From there the guests were led to their seats where they found their place card attached (via clothespin) to a small potted succulent. The place cards (also designed by Teresa Lang) were all a unique design to each guest, with care instructions for the succulents on the back of the place cards. The place settings were made up of eclectic vintage china which was collected by the mother of the groom over the course of the engagement.

The cake table was built around the center tree in the backyard which also anchored the string lights which hung above the tables at the reception in a wagon wheel pattern. We also hung mini chandeliers and lanterns in the cake table tree. The cakes were baked by Rosebeary’s Designs in Baking, and were decorated with succulents by a friend of the bride. The wooden hand carved sweetheart table was decorated with wooden letters spelling the last name of the bride and groom, as well as a flower arrangement in an antique silver pitcher. The bistro tables near the bar were decorated with various antique silver pieces collected by the mother of the groom. Overall, it was an insanely beautiful night. The weather was absolute perfection. Even the taper candles on the tables stayed lit all night long. All the guests danced well into the night and enjoyed the warmth of the fire pit along with the warmth of the love between my sister and her husband.

Luce Loft Wedding with a Citrus Color Palette

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Jackie Wonders

When you’ve got a couple who’s setting out for a “California cool” kind of wedding with a color palette of sunshine yellow and pops of muted greens and blues, you can consider my attention immediately captured. Newlyweds Matt and Ashley enlisted the talents of San Diego vendors Jackie Wonders, Beau & Arrow Events, and Sweet Marie Design to bring together their relaxed + elegant day, which fused modern design with plenty of botanical details for a truly fresh event.

From the bride, Ashley: We were going for a feeling that was California cool, relaxed yet elegant. The style and design was meant to reflect a celebratory get together rather than a formal dinner. Our colors included sunshine yellow and muted green hues with pops of orange and subtle hints of blue that accented the warm and free spirited color palette.

Elegant Modern Wedding at the Asian Art Museum

Modern Weddings

Dear readers, today we have a wedding that couldn’t be more beautiful if it tried. What else can you expect when you have a dream team like Encarnacion Photography, Enjoy Events Co., and Shotgun Floral Studio, though? These San Francisco vendors brought Jennifer and Armello’s wedding day vision to a reality in the best way possible, with gold and copper details, geometric accents, and heaps of modern elegance.

From the bride, Jennifer: We wanted modern elegance, with highlights of gold + copper, and lots of bright floral/greenery to accent our color scheme. We met during college at the University of San Francisco, so St. Ignatius Church (the church on campus, and also where we graduated together) was our only choice for our ceremony. Not to mention how gorgeous it is with its high ceilings and ornate architectural details, it was the perfect place for us. And we just fell in love with Asian Art Museum’s tall marble columns, around which our cocktail hour was held, and Samsung Hall for our reception with it’s large windows, high ceilings, and beautiful center chandelier.

Although our families and friends are large groups on both sides, we still wanted our wedding to feel intimate and full of our love. We also wanted to have a celebratory/party feel to our reception. The colors we chose to use were bordeaux, ruby, blush pink, gold, and black for a day that was modern, elegant, and romantic. Triangles were used throughout our paper goods + decor to symbolize one of our favorite bible verses — “Ecclesiastes 4:12 – A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Enjoy each step of planning, even during the stressful moments because it goes by so fast. Don’t get so caught up in the details that you forget the reason behind it all, which is marrying the love of your life. Take breaks from planning to spend time together, to keep the stress level down and to really enjoy each other as an engaged couple. As for the actual wedding day, take a deep breath and just let the day unfold. Allow yourself to take in each moment and feel all the love and joy from your soon-to-be spouse, family, and friends, it’ll help the day not go by so fast.

Elegant Country Wedding at Barley Sheaf Farm

Rustic Weddings

Photos by:

Lev Kuperman

We know wedding planning can be associated with high-stakes decisions and stressful moments putting details together, so it’s always refreshing to hear a bride say she wants her wedding day to feel like “hosting a dinner in our own garden followed by an incredibly energetic dance party.” The perfect team to bring this to reality was Lev Kuperman behind the camera and Sebesta Design in control of floral design, who both knocked it far out of the park for Joann and Chris’ wedding day.

From the bride, Joann: Chris and I met on September 13, 2009 while waiting in line to get into a bar in NYC. We were complete strangers with no common friends and no common ties, who happened to be at the right place at the right time. Thinking back to how we met always brings a smile to our faces, so we were ecstatic when our first choice venue called to say they had September 13th open. What better way to celebrate 5 years of meeting than to get married? We appreciated that our wedding was one of the rare moments in our lives where we could have the majority of people we love under one roof. Since my family lives all the way in the Philippines, we asked our immediate families and closest friends to stay at the Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm. It was a lot of fun to call the Inn our home for the weekend along with the special people in our lives. Our vision was to celebrate our weekend entirely outdoors starting with a BBQ rehearsal dinner on the Inn’s patio and culminating with a morning after brunch. We wanted our wedding day to feel relaxed, as if we were hosting a dinner in our own garden followed by an incredibly energetic dance party.

We wanted our celebration to be simple, yet intimate and romantic. We used a lot of light colors and earthy tones to create a clean look that was both pretty and rustic. We also loved the idea of maximizing the 80+ acre property as much as we could by having separate locations for the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, and after-party. Unfortunately, it rained for a few hours in the afternoon, relocating our outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour to the barn. The barn, with its wooden beams and hanging chandelier thankfully lent an even more intimate feel to our exchange of vows. We were inspired by sunset and dusk colors, string lights, greenery and wood. We used blush, peach, ivory and butter with small pops of color and gold accents for our decor and chose french blue for our bridesmaids/groomsmen attire because it’s a flattering color and one of our favorites. We did not have any DIY projects, but we sourced many items on our own. These included custom burlap runners, chalk boards, candles, jelly jars, lace ribbons for our cocktail tables and various other design items from independent sources on Etsy.

We mixed round and rectangular tables for our reception with every table having a unique composition of flowers. Our florist achieved this look by using autumn clematis vine, cafe au lait dahlias, chamomile, cabbage spray roses, raspberry scabiosa, and white ranunculus as a base for both table shapes, but using different vases and adding pops of color. Round tables included rose astrantia and fresh lavender in the mix, which were arranged in gold mercury glass vases. Rectangular tables added butter stock, butter yellow freesia, queen anne’s lace and pink and purple cosmos to the base and were styled in mason jars and bottle bud vases.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? 1) Have fun while tackling the various aspects of wedding planning! We were fortunate in that we were able to provide our own alcohol to the venue, so Chris and I planned personal wine tastings for two weeks in our apartment. We opened a bottle each night to taste which wines we wanted to serve at our wedding. This allowed us to add another personal touch and gave us a chance to unwind together. 2) Have a solid rain plan. Assuming it rains all day at your wedding, how will it affect every aspect of your day? Discuss it in detail with all of your vendors and use their knowledge to help create a plan you will be comfortable with. It was very important to us that we have a beautiful indoor ceremony location if things didn’t pan out and we didn’t get the sunny fall day every couple hopes for. We passed on numerous venues for this reason, and we are so glad we did. It rained for a few hours the afternoon of our wedding and plan B kicked into effect seamlessly. 3) The best part of our wedding was the unbelievable high we felt from being surrounded by family and friends under one roof with one goal in mind: to celebrate us as a couple. What better way to thank them for the impact they made in our lives than to make our wedding fun, comfortable, and easy for them? By that I mean, splurge on reliable transportation to take guests to and from your venue, ensure you have plenty of good food (people will get hungry after all that dancing and everyone appreciates a few sliders at the end of the night, trust me), have a wide selection of drinks and abundance of coffee, and try to say hi to every table during dinner. 4) Last and most importantly, know that the day will go by quickly. This is something every bride hears… but really, it’s hard to take it seriously until the day comes. Take a few minutes during your ceremony and your reception to block out everything but how you are feeling that exact moment and just take it all in. Allow yourself to be aware of and truly feel surrounded by all the love of family and friends. When I look back on our wedding, I try to relive that moment and it still gives me butterflies.

During the cocktail hour, we wanted the string quartet to play a combination of classic wedding songs, oldies, and more recent hits. Chris and I wanted everyone to be on their feet most of the evening and DJ Taiga delivered by mixing upbeat classics (Elvis, The Beatles) with our version of old school hip hop (Notorious BIG, Nelly, Yung Joc). Given that so many of our guests are close friends from high school and college, we requested songs from 1998-2007, throwbacks we knew they would love. As people were eating, romantic, folksy tunes by artists such as Jose Gonzalez and Iron and Wine played in the background.

I’ll admit it; I used to think it would be difficult to make a food truck wedding elegant. Well no more, because this backyard California wedding from Majesta Patterson has completely proven me wrong! Cole and Caitlin’s wedding day was full of good eats, lovely floral design, and bistro string lights. Prepare to be blown away by this endlessly sophisticated wedding:

From the bride, Caitlin: We wanted our wedding to be super laid back and fun for everyone involved; we saw it as a great opportunity to bring family and friends together and have an amazing evening making memories. It was so great to have the people that we love and cherish there to celebrate with us, and we wanted that to be the focus and not get hung up on too many little details. We wanted everyone to feel relaxed, have some great food, dance to some awesome music, and just enjoy spending time with loved ones.

My wedding could probably be best described as simple and classic, with vintage elements, and a soft color palette with the occasional pops of color (brought in largely by the flowers used in the bouquets and on the tables). Everything felt light and soft with just the right amount of contrast. There were several DIY projects, including the menus, table numbers, the “ribbon wall,” escort cards and the display they were attached to, bride and groom chair backs, cake topper, ring box, wooden gate with bride and groom’s initials, stands for the vintage windows displayed at the altar and behind the sweetheart table, the game of “life-sized Jenga,” hangers for the bride’s/bridesmaids’ dresses, and several pieces of refinished vintage furniture. The wedding planner along with my mom and dad totally rocked at all of these DIY projects!

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? My best advice for couples would be to relax and be adaptable when planning your wedding—especially if you are doing it long distance, which is becoming more and more common these days. If you would have asked me a few years ago how I expected my wedding planning to go, I would’ve said, “I don’t need a wedding planner, I can totally do everything myself.” Little did I know that I would be planning a wedding long distance, and wouldn’t have the freedom to fly back and forth between Omaha and the Bay Area to get my hands dirty in all the little details. I was able come up with a vision for the big day, but needed to leave the execution in my mom’s and my wedding planner’s hands (yes, I did get a wedding planner after all, and she was a huge blessing to us). I learned through the process that it’s okay to trust your vision to other people—no, I didn’t get to do every DIY project myself, and I didn’t get to see everything first hand before the big day, but guess what? I had a beautiful wedding and reception, the planning process wasn’t stressful, and the most important part was that I got to marry my best friend that day—that’s all that ultimately matters for any bride or groom.

From the photographer, Majesta Patterson: Marrying tradition with modern design, Cole and Caitlin held a sweet, rustic wedding at the Rengstorff House in Mountain View. Planning all the way from Nebraska, they carefully chose the perfect details and vendors – from their food truck spread to their gorgeous tablescapes. I love that Caitlin chose to add pops of color in her bouquets while keeping the bridesmaid dresses mismatched and neutral! Cole adorned a classic navy blue suit, my absolute favorite suit color of the season. Let’s just talk about their tablescapes for a second – one of my favorite details from their wedding! Like all good things, the layers to their table created a perfect balance to create a homey and inviting feel to their reception. With custom menu’s nailed to wood blocks and mismatched glass vases to hold their delicate wild flowers. Napkins were wrapped and placed in cute buckets to carry the food truck theme, placed on a natural wood board atop their light blue table runners. And lastly, the overhead bistro lighting created a warm environment for their guests to dine under. It truly was a charming celebration!

New York Meets Palm Springs Wedding

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Amber Gress

As if there was ever any doubt, this wedding proves that when Amber Gress and Michelle Edgemont come together, the result is pure magic. As soon as Caitlin and Scott realized their wedding day could (and should!) be whatever they want it to be, they began looking at it as one big party with all their loved ones in tow. Sounds perfect, right? Spoiler alert: it is.

New York Meets Palm Springs Wedding - photo by Amber Gress http://ruffledblog.com/new-york-meets-palm-springs-wedding

From the bride, Caitlin: It took us a little while to really hone the vision for our wedding. We spent so many hours stalking other weddings and pinning into the wee hours of the night, and there were so many fun styles and ideas we were just so overwhelmed. That’s when we realized that we didn’t need to follow something someone else did; we could do whatever we wanted. Sounds crazy, but took a couple months for us to realize that. And we knew more than anything we wanted the atmosphere to feel like a party. We thought of all the fun things we’d like to see at this fabulous party which were cool metallic elements, fun runners, cascading streamers. We wanted our guests to feel the energy and fun from the second they entered the tent, so we did that through the décor.

Bouquet recipe: Peach garden roses, peach stock, white dahlias, ferns (some spray painted gold!), light pink spray roses, hot pink carnations. They were tied with a combination of ribbons; peach watercolor, white with black polka dots and metallic gold. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were ferns (some tips spray painted gold!) with a peach watercolor ribbon.

Our theme was definitely “Party.” And our color theme/style was lush ferns and greens accented with pink and peach florals. Handwritten type accents throughout and touches of metallic gold and geometric patterns. And last but not least, confetti! The geometric table runners and table numbers were DIY [but not by us:)]. We hired the INCREDIBLY amazing and creative Michelle Edgemont who took this party idea and made it a reality.

Casual Glam Wedding in Paradise Valley

Romantic Weddings

No matter what, you can’t go wrong with a bit of gold, pink, and sequins. Add in an adorable flower girl, inspired wedding signs, and flowers from The Flower Studio AZ, and you’ve got an absolute winner on your hands! Thank you Pinkerton Photography and A Day to Cherish for your work on this one – we have no doubt it’s a day that newlyweds Ainslee and Christian will remember for decades to come.

Casual Glam Wedding in Paradise Valley - photo by Pinkerton Photography http://ruffledblog.com/casual-glam-wedding-in-paradise-valley

From the bride, Ainslee: I envisioned something romantic and elegant while still having a laid back vibe. I wanted our guests to feel comfortable and to have fun throughout the night, not just after dinner. These factors really helped drive my decisions – from food to the DJ and everything in between. We served sliders, fries, tacos, and chips and guacamole; a menu that is casual and included something that everybody loved.

Flower recipe: We stuck mainly to roses — spray roses, garden roses, etc. My bouquet had some dahlias as well, and the centerpieces had some hydrangeas. I originally wanted peonies, but they weren’t in season. Sometimes you just have to compromise, and the flowers turned out beautiful!

I am girl who loves pink, sparkles, and all things pretty, and my husband is a sports fan — he played college golf and spent most of his life as a baseball player. I loved the challenge of incorporating these two very opposite interests. The boutonnieres were golf tees with spray roses, and my cousin made is some beautiful gold and pink corn hole boards that we set out for guests to use. It was important for me to have things that he loved, it was Christian’s day just as much as it was mine. I always describe our wedding as “rustic elegance”. It was outdoors and had a few rustic elements but also had lots of sequins and flowers. Our color scheme was blush/ight pink, silver, gold, and ivory. I wanted a color scheme and “theme” that would be timeless; I wanted to be able to look back at photos in 30 years and have done it all over again the same way. As much as I love a good DIY, I didn’t want to stress myself out with too many projects. The few things we did were collect picture frames for the reception, spray paint a few small pieces of decor, rhinestoned the menu cards, and tied ribbons on the programs for some added color. I know that everything would have looked amazing without any of that, but I wanted a few personal touches.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? My biggest piece of advice is to make time for each other outside of planning. We tended to get so caught up in planning that we wouldn’t set aside time for a date night. At the end of the day, the wedding is about being with the person you love, not about how many flowers will be on the table. I would also tell couples to enjoy this time, although it’s stressful, it’s such a fun experience for you, your families, and your friends. P.S. If you could spend money on one thing, make it a day-of wedding planner. I don’t know what I would’ve done without Cara. She created timelines for us and the vendors, let us know when payments were due, set up everything on the day of the wedding, and made sure everything ran smoothly. I would have paid her twice as much for how wonderful she was. It really helped me relax and enjoy the wedding day getting ready with my girlfriends instead of running around like crazy.

Sailboats, waves, octopus and jellyfish are just a few of the amazing seaworthy designs featured in Concertina Press’s line of vintage inspired nautical wedding invitations and stationery.

“Ruth is an exceptional artist and artisan! She was very prompt to stay in communication with me throughout my ordering process. She worked with me to make sure that all my needs were met exactly. It was so comforting to work with her through the stressful process of ordering the perfect wedding invitations! I absolutely LOVE the way her products turned out, and cannot wait to send them to all my guests! Thank you SO MUCH Ruth, your kindness and professionalism have helped me more than you know!” ” – Emily D.

After living in the small town of Woods Hole on Cape Cod for nearly 11 years, Ruth, the owner and designer of Concertina Press, moved down to the sunny East coast of Florida to be closer to family. Her Cape Cod map save the date is still widely popular with couples getting married on the Cape, along with the matching wedding invitation. Since moving south she’s added more tropical designs including seahorses, sand dollars and waves.

Glam Wedding in a Warehouse

Elegant Weddings

“Elegant with an unexpected twist of industrial” is exactly how we would describe this wedding from Mallory + Justin Photographers. Raquel and Steve wanted a memorable wedding day in a warehouse space, and they found the ideal venue in Cleveland’s Lake Erie Building. Of course, the day wouldn’t have been complete without the floral designs from Plantscaping!

Glam Wedding in a Warehouse - photo by Mallory and Justin Photographers http://ruffledblog.com/glam-wedding-in-a-cleveland-warehouse

From the bride, Raquel: We wanted to make sure that the wedding felt very us, and not go overboard in too many details to make sure it was just for us (which Steve was really good at making sure I didn’t get too carried away!). We had recently moved back to Cleveland from Manhattan and we both really love the industrial look (think Houston Hall in West Village). We had looked around at a lot of warehouse space in Cleveland and had found out about the Lake Erie Building and we both loved it! We wanted it to be a party that not only Steve and I would remember, but that all of our guests will remember!

The color scheme we had in mind was navy blue, dark grey and a pale bluish-grey.. colors that we both love. Plus in the reception place, the Lake Erie Building, at night the windows at night had the perfect colors of blue that really made it look special inside without a lot of up lighting. For the DIYs, we had a lot of help from our families. My father and uncles hung all the lights for the reception and made the Edison bulb fixture for above our head table. We made the light up BAR and R&S signs. We made the chalkboard with the seating chart and I wrote out all the names, as well as all the names on the place cards on the champagne bottles.

Wedding Music:
For the ceremony we just chose the classic processional and recessional songs.
Bridal Party Entrance: “Safe and Sound,” Capital Cities
Cake Cutting: “Ho Hey,” The Lumineers
First Dance: “Below My Feet,” Mumford and Sons

From the photographers, Mallory + Justin Photographers: I’m submitting a gorgeous Cleveland, Ohio warehouse wedding we photographed a few weeks ago that had some memorable details. The details were elegant and personal featuring some owned and reclaimed items that made the warehouse sparkle. The bride, Raquel brought elements from her own home to create a comfortable space. The warehouse was adorned with vintage furniture, wine barrels, a giant handwritten chalk board seating chart and even a real street postbox to collect cards. Most of the table details were handmade by the bride. Raquel + Steve met in college, got engaged while living in Manhattan and had their wedding in downtown Cleveland, they’re a gorgeous couple with an elegant, timeless style… with a little bit of flair and edge.

Craigleith Ski Club Wedding

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Michael Rousseau

It’s always the sweet little touches that make a wedding truly shine – like the fact that couple Shannae and Sean exchanged vows at the same ski club where Sean spent vacations skiing with his family. Their wedding day was full of unexpected pops of fun, like the dove release during the ceremony, the sequined bridesmaid dresses, and the dramatic floral arrangements by Pink Twig Floral. Thank you Michael Rousseau for bringing your A game as always!

Craigleith Ski Club wedding - photo by Michael Rousseau Photography http://ruffledblog.com/craigleith-ski-club-wedding

From the bride, Shannae: We decided to get married in Blue Mountain, Ontario at a Ski Club where my husband grew up skiing with his family and the venue (Craigleith Ski Club) had a rustic cabin feel to it so I wanted to replicate that in the look and feel of the wedding. We would describe the vision as rustic, mountains, glam, plum, gold.

Start a pinterest page with a board for every category or item that you need for your wedding and buy your dress and before seriously planning decor. The dress sets the tone of the evening and Pinterest will help you map out your day. Be present on the day of, take everything in. This sounds so cliche but I feel very grateful to have been given this advice and I’m thankful that I listened. River Bend Colorado Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

Our Love is Loud

Truth be told, I can’t even begin to count all the ways I love this wedding captured by Our Love is Loud with team Organically You Events and Bella Lu Floral. Paige and Dillon’s wedding took place under the Colorado trees in front of an aisle lined with antique rugs and enough twinkle lights to make your heart start swooning. Prepare to fall hard for this one, folks!

River Bend Colorado wedding - photo by Our Love is Loud http://ruffledblog.com/river-bend-colorado-wedding

From the bride, Paige: My wedding was not something I ever thought about until I got engaged. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted it outside… the whole thing! I love the free spirited, bohemian look and tried to step outside of the box. I didn’t want anything to be overly “typical”.

Flower recipe: Oh man.. Flowers were the biggest part of my wedding! My bouquet was made of willow eucalyptus, pieris, burgundy ranuculus, bright pink spray roses, sword fern, blackberry twig, Queen Anne’s lace, purple kale, bay leaves and some pheasant feathers! My girls wore arm bands and they were all different. My flower crown and bouquet were absolutely amazing!

River Bend Colorado wedding - photo by Our Love is Loud http://ruffledblog.com/river-bend-colorado-wedding

Boho, whimsical, and earthy or flower child-y (not even a word!) are probably the best ways to describe the look of my wedding. We did not have a color scheme. My bridesmaids’ dresses were a sage and my maid of honor wore a dark purple dress with a flower pattern! My mom created the sign directed people to their seats and also gathered a birds nest for the ring bearer. Other than that, we used a lot of etsy!

Last fall a flood swept through Lyons, Colorado causing all kinds of damage to the land and community. River Bend was a venue by the river built during the restoration of the town. We think its one of the most beautiful venues in Colorado. Winona Lake Elopement

Elopements

Photos by:

Colagrossi Studio

As we slowly shift gears to cozying up for Fall, this elopement from our very own Amy’s sister is the perfect way to kickstart our Fall weddings. When you come across an elopement this sweet, it can be pretty tempting to throw away all of your seating plans and spend your wedding day with just your honey like Chloe and Evan chose to do with their adorable baby. One of the few witnesses of their nuptials was Colagrossi Studio, who was there to record all of the day’s sweetness for posterity.

Winona Lake elopement - photo by Colagrossi Studios http://ruffledblog.com/winona-lake-elopement

From the bride, Chloe: I was interested in a vintage styled wedding with a rustic feel. It was important for me to keep things simple and elegant, yet fun. Some adjectives that describe the look of my wedding would be rustic, vintage, woodsy, bohemian, and elegant. There wasn’t necessarily a color scheme, but I did incorporate soft, blush pinks into both my flowers and high-heels. Most of the wedding was DIY, from my floral headband to the ceremonial arch decor. We made a bohemian-styled tent from multicolored blankets that draped over tree branches, along with several decorative paper projects.

Philadelphia Estate Wedding

The More We See

If this Philadelphia wedding isn’t the height of intimate elegance, we don’t know what is. Emily and Edith hosted their beautiful nuptials at Cliveden, an estate overflowing with natural beauty and lush scenery. Thanks to The More We See for capturing all of the lovely details!

From the brides, Emily and Edith: We wanted the wedding to feel elegant and intimate. Having delicious food and great music were our top priorities. We also aimed to have a very locally sourced wedding and found wonderful Philadelphia area vendors to partner with. At the time of our wedding, same-sex marriage was not yet legal in Pennsylvania. We had a small legal ceremony on April 27 with our immediate family in New Jersey. What we called our “real wedding” was on May 17 with a larger but still intimate crowd where we exchanged vows and rings. It was important to us that we celebrated our love in front of our family and friends in the city where we met, fell in love and call home.

The wedding color scheme was green. We were married in May so the trees at Cliveden were a lovely new-leaf green and we wanted to play off that color. We both love nature so we wanted the wedding to feel as outdoorsy as possible. The ceremony was outside, the cocktail hour in the grass and we had a clear topped tent so guests could even be among the trees at the reception. For the favors, Emily made Christmas Crackers for each guest to pop after the toasts. They were stuffed with paper crowns, salt caramels that Emily made and riddles that Edith put together representing the Balentine Ale caps of the beer her dad liked to drink. Emily’s dad and grandmother made Spirytus – a family tradition of polish vodka cut with honey. This was used instead of a champagne toast. Edith’s sister made a gluten free the cake, which was used for the cake cutting. Emily’s sister made props for the photoboth and her dad made lawn games. Edith’s college friend sang during the ceremony.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Stay organized from the beginning! We had multiple spreadsheets to track guests, payments and projects which helped us keep sane throughout the process. Pick vendors that you like and enjoy working with. We had a great team around us which made the planning a lot of fun and the wedding amazing. If you can, have your wedding close to home. We could have done the wedding in a state where it was legal but it was a huge benefit during the planning process to live a few miles away from most of our vendors and location.

Levyland Estate Wedding

DIY Weddings

We are oh-so-excited to bring you this wedding from Mandilynn Photography, Salt Creative Co., and CozyPosies, with its abundance of personal touches and DIY details. Oh, and you see that fantastic “you’re my greatest adventure” sign? It’s up for grabs in Recycle Your Wedding, so make sure you check it out!

Levyland Estate wedding - photo by Mandi Lynn Photography http://ruffledblog.com/levyland-estate-wedding

From the bride, Lindsey: Tradition, it is something that we thought about with good intentions. When we first got engaged it was all — Which song will we walk down the aisle to? Will we get married in the church his parents did? What will be my something old, something new and something blue? Chris and I gave these traditional thoughts an enormous effort, but just a few weeks in to being engaged we simply gave up. We made a very early decision to throw all “tradition” out the window. In making this decision and speaking it out loud to family and friends, something amazing happened. No one had make or break demands or expectations! We were left to plan a celebration that was utterly and completely us. Fast forward to the week of our wedding. We are in Palm Springs, at my parents house organizing bolts of burlap, DIY table numbers, hand-painted directional signs, crafted paper mobiles and shapes, hand-etched glasses, hand-sewed napkins in different geometric patterns, programs and menus (designed by myself), props we had collected, 100 14″ platters (that we had to buy in order to serve our menu family style), etc into boxes with photographs of their contents, itemized lists and renderings taped to the outside. On top of all that we are packing my parents entire outdoor living room into an 18′ U-Haul and driving 2 hours west to Carlsbad.

We arrived in Carlsbad with what felt like (and very well might have been) an entire 2 bedroom apartment. Fortunate for us, Levyland Estate was ours for the entire week. We choose Levyland Estate in Carlsbad for two reasons. The first being I wanted a garden wedding and my fiancé a beach wedding. Marriage is about compromise right? The second reason was I wanted to choose my vendors and most importantly not have a 11 pm shut down time. The week at Levyland Estate was a tad un-traditional. We took the “engagement photos” we didn’t deem necessary for anything, but to have some really nice photos of ourselves. We went on a craft beer tour the day before our wedding with 25 of our closest friends and family members, including my 87 year old grandma and great aunt. The week was perfect and the weather was so typically Southern California.

We kicked off the night, not with a reception line or a grand entrance, but with my family of 4 and Chris’ family of 4 (bridal party + parents) walking around to each table (8 people) and giving cheers to all of guests. A perfect sentiment for us as all of them were holding the the glasses that we had hand-etched with “cheers” in six different languages, the Thanksgiving before. The cheers brought a roar to each table and an excitement from the ones to come. As we finished the last cheers, the dinner began to be served. The gastro-truck caterer I choose to fulfill my dreams of a family style meal, knocked it out of the park. Guests dug in like they would at home. Holding platters for one another, serving the heavy entrees to each person before themselves with “oohs” and “ahhs” after every bite.

With dinner coming to a close the slow motion video booth became an instant hit. We threw decks of cards in the air, pop balloons with hand folded paper, punches were thrown, hair was tossed and kisses were had. We skipped all traditional dances, first dance included, and started the dancing off by inviting our families to hit the dance floor together. Our craft beer was drunk, the dessert table of cupcakes and signature smore’s was devoured and to top the night off guests enjoyed a taco cart complete with hand-made tortillas. The party continued late into the night with absolutely no cut off time and Chris & I went to bed early in the morning — simply glowing. It was ultimately a celebration for the books.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? 1. From the VERY beginning decide on the 3 things that are most important to each of you. For me it was food, venue and freedom — to choose any vendor I wanted. For Chris, it was to write the ceremony & vows ourselves, to have some photos taken on the beach and the alcohol. Then we went to each family and ask if they had any expectations or musts that you should consider when planning. For our families it was that my mother wanted to give me away with my father, my dad wanted to give his speech/toast first. Having these conversations and voicing the things that are most important to you before you get too deep into the planning is crucial. 2. This was a request from my father that I think I will tell every bride that is planning a wedding. Choose 3 words that you want to show up on your wedding day. For me I choose relaxed, organized and flippin’ fun. With those words in mind I planned every minor detail and executed a fantastic wedding.

I think this was one of the hardest decisions when planning this wedding. I must have listened to 1000 songs and searched, what felt like the entire web, for things that made sense. We didn’t have any first dances or father/daughter dances so I was one hundred percent focused on the ceremony and here is what came out of it…

Paradise Valley Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

When you’ve got two gorgeous gowns, a jaw-dropping ceremony stage, impeccable floral design from The Flower Studio, and succulents galore, you’ve got one stylish shoot we just can’t pass up. With Amy & Jordan Photography behind the camera and Imoni Events tackling all the design elements, how could we?

Paradise Valley wedding inspiration - photo by Amy and Jordan Photography http://ruffledblog.com/paradise-valley-wedding-inspiration

From the event designer, Imoni Events: “Something Old, Something New” was inspired by the idea of the gorgeous Madison James gowns set again rich fabrics, organic florals, natural elements and a hint of structure and metals. Pairing the old and the new created a very intricate landscape for this styled shoot. For the bridal florals we used a hand tied bouquet featuring Amnesia roses, champagne quicksand roses, ivory spray roses, white scabiosa, and scabiosa pods. For the ceremony space we used an incredibly romantic chuppah adorned with custom gauze flax-colored fabric panels, hand-carved weathered wood Geodesic pendant lights and asymmetrical design of lush floral with large succulent details. Staging this inspiration shoot at sunset amped up the romance to another level. The bride and groom were accented by the glow of the hanging lanterns!

Down the aisle, we wanted an eclectic feel and also to incorporate subtle blue tones against the natural lawn so we used oversized blue recycled glass vases with Dusty Miller foliage, roses, hydrangea, and vintage french Cane Back chairs. For the reception dinner space. We wanted to continue with that old meets new vibe and used a geo-printed linen from La a Tavola with Florentine wood candlesticks, multiple glass geodesic terrariums with Blue Rose echeveria succulents. Our paper products were subtle yet extremely detailed and handcrafted. Page and Mason created clever hanging place cards to accentuate the gorgeous cane back chairs and add an element of surprise. For the cake, we really wanted to showcase the geo print from the La Tavola Linen on the reception table, so Ruze Cake House created a gorgeous fondant cake that mirrored the print perfectly! From beginning to end, it was absolutely breathtaking.

Romantic Hickory Street Annex Wedding

Romantic Weddings

This wedding has so much to love, so you better start preparing yourself right now. Apryl Ann Photography and Blue Lotus worked to make Danielle and Benjamin’s wedding day a magical event, and it’s a no-brainer to say they had total success. Truly, how stunning is that ceremony setup?

From the bride, Danielle: I had always envisioned a jazz band at my wedding so I kind of built the theme around that. It had an inviting classic elegance about it that really did make the whole night magical! The classic elements were subtle: skinny black ties and slim fitting suits, lace, the font on the invitations, twinkle lights and music choice. The venue, food, flowers and lighting made it feel very relaxed and accessible.

I told my bridesmaids to choose a dress in the neutral color palette (nude, blush, tan, cream, gold or silver). I really liked the way metallics looked with the neutral colors! It felt like winter without being Christmasy. The flowers gave the needed pop of color. My good friend Krista made the lace runner for the head table. My mom, sisters and I potted the individual succulents for each place setting as the wedding favor. Most everything else was outsourced as I planned the wedding from out of state haha!

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? 1. Don’t take out wedding stress on your fiance!!! The whole process is very taxing but it only makes things 10x worse if your relationship suffers for it. 2. Don’t procrastinate. Just don’t do it! 3. Delegate. It was really hard for me to do this. I was planning a wedding in Texas from North Carolina so I needed to trust my friends and family to handle things for me but it was really hard to give up control of every little detail. They were perfectly capable and did an amazing job, but I would have been a lot more relaxed if I had delegated more. You will drive yourself crazy if you don’t let people help you! I was even worried my fiance would put the stamps on the invitation crooked so I let him seal them but I put the stamps on haha! I promise I wasn’t a Bridezilla, just a little neurotic :).

Bridal Blooms: Spring Garden Flowers

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We’re kicking off the week with a new column! Ever wondered what are the names of the flowers in the photos you’ve been pinning and collecting as inspiration for your wedding? With the help of talented Floral Designers, we’re going to learn to put a name to the face flower, so we can start recognizing them in the oodles of images of bouquets we love to drool over. Today Kristen of Kio Kreations will show us a few late-spring blooms captured by Kara Schultz. Spring brides, take note!

late spring garden wedding flowers peony cabbage roses sweet pea parrot tulips

From Kristen of Kio Kreations: we did the fresh floral designs including all of the centerpieces, bouquet and boutonniere. The flowers used in the bouquet and centerpieces included garden roses (also known as “cabbage roses”), peonies, parrot tulips, geranium leaf, sweet pea, spray roses, and French tulips. Fen Li of BeadFloraJewels made the French-beaded flowers by hand that we featured in the bouquet, and we also used black French beaded leaves to accent some of the centerpieces and featured a set of French beaded napkin ring holders as well in our display.

late spring garden wedding flowers peony cabbage roses sweet pea parrot tulips

We did this shoot in April, when all of these items were available, as some of them have a small window of availability. Peonies are typically in season from late December through end of June. French and Parrot Tulips are typically in season from December through mid/late May. Sweet pea is available late winter-June. Geranium foliage is typically available all year and has is very aromatic. Spray roses to me are the best little additive for filling out an arrangement with lushness! They are always available, come in a variety of colors and when “blown open” have a ruffly look that reminds people of a mini garden rose or peony. The beautiful garden roses we used are also available year-round and are a great compromise for brides who love the look of peonies but are getting married when they are not in season. Of course, we had the opportunity to use both in April, so we did. Love the mix of textures together!

late spring garden wedding flowers peony cabbage roses sweet pea parrot tulips

European-style arrangements usually have a free-flowing, layered, somewhat garden look to them and that is what I was trying to achieve with these designs. The French beaded flowers were my inspiration for emulating European/French floral design. Mixing heights and having some cascading elements with the tulips and foliage was integral in making these pieces flow together. The bouquet for us, was the icing on the cake, and combined my fresh floral artistry with Fen’s beautiful hand-beaded flowers–making for a bouquet that was just stunning. It smelled fantastic, it looked lush and luxurious and it left the bride with some beautiful beaded flowers she could keep long after her wedding day. I love the idea of mixing materials in with my fresh flowers — and that is why Fen and I collaborated on this project.
