Long Island Garden Wedding
Johanna and Jason wanted their wedding day to be first and foremost a wild party for friends and family, with touches of pink and green throughout the day. I’d say it’s a safe bet they achieved this! With a tented dance floor adorned in endless paper lanterns and some absolutely perfect floral arrangements captured by Matt Miller of Our Labor of Love, this wedding has us pining for a garden soirée!
From the bride, Johanna: When J and I started planning our wedding, we knew that the most important thing to us was that it felt like a party – we wanted it to be beautiful, with lots of personal touches, but really wanted it to feel like a wild time.
We both took on sooo many projects to make the atmosphere happen, and I know the common advice is to only take on one major task, but figured “whatever, you only do this once…”, which became like a mantra. The three days prior were a whirlwind of crazy – hanging all those lanterns, and making all the flower arrangements & bouquets, almost made my family (and a couple of VERY loyal bridesmaids) lose their minds, but we just kept repeating “this is only happening once, and then we are done”. In the end it was so worth it – the day was perfect in every way. (And since there is now such an abundance of vintage china & props in my Mom’s life, she has even started a rental company!)
Our advice to couples is that when you get to the day of the wedding, just let everything else go, and focus on your, and your guests, having an incredible time. It’s your party – you won! – you married your best friend, and all the people you love are there to celebrate the two of you. No one else knows (or cares) if you forgot some element of decor, or something isn’t “perfect” – it’s your day, just enjoy it.
Jason loved playing a couple of songs with the band, including one he wrote for me, called “Stay Sweet.” My favorite moment: The impromptu, and somewhat dangerous fireworks display. Everyone was holding roman candles and sparklers in the air, and it was just so unbelievable to look around, at everyone’s faces illuminated, and looking so happy. I also loved when my brother walked me down the aisle – seeing J at the end, smiling at us, with my brother on my arm – it was such a fun, but also meaningful moment.

I think your advice is so perfect–it’s exactly how I felt on the day too.
Also, is it possible to be addicted to a colour scheme–because I think I am. It’s just so bright and wonderful.
Those lanterns are so cute. love the reception setting and decoration.
Love your wedding! It’s so beautiful and colorful, just like I’m hoping mine will be. I’m planning to do the flowers myself like you did and I love your arrangements. You and your friends did a great job! Any advice for someone doing their own flowers? What kind of flowers did you use???
Love that abundance of paper lanterns. So so so pretty!
love the the vintage keys and her hairstyle!
Gorgeous pastel colours… love the style of this one.
Well done guys oxox
Thank you!! This really was the best day ever. I WON! <3
@Amy Re. doing your own flowers: You just really have to build it into your timeline, and then triple the amount of time that you think it will take. My flowers got picked up on Thursday, and that night the stems were de-leafed and prepped, then dropped into buckets of water. Friday every container got filled with oasis, and then the arrangements started happening. We kept them fresh by keeping the a/c pumping from Thursday to Saturday, when they got put on the tables.
We had Peonies, Roses, Lisianthus, Queen Anne's Lace & Hypericum.
If you do your own bouquets, just make sure you have ample floral wire, and floral tape, and watch a few youtube tutorials in advance.
@Lydia Thank you – I did my hair myself, so thats a huge compliment! 🙂
Loving the vibrant colours in weddings today. The photographs look great and it just makes it look so much fun. Beautiful bride and groom and fabulous bridesmaids dresses!
the bride dress is so beautiful! love the hanging decorations
Love the colours!
I love the little porcelain doll on the table – my older sister collected those as a kid.
Love the vintage touches blended with the bright pops of candy colour. Looks like New Wave Vintage is coming through stronger than ever, judging by the styling and design I have seen lately. When New Wave Vintage is done well, my, how refreshing and stylish it is! Bec xx
I love the key shot and the hanging jars.
Congrats, your wedding is absolutely gorgeous!! I am also having a garden wedding on Long Island with a similar vintage feel.
Above you said that your mom started a vintage rental company and that you are renting out the antique dishes. Can you post a link to her website or e-mail me with some information? heathervcorrigan[at]gmail[dot]com
Thanks so much!
This is so beautiful! I’m so glad your wedding day was filled with happiness and love! Can you share where the wedding venue was? I know it’s long island but is there an actual name to the location? Thank you so much for sharing :)!
I realize this post was a few years back, but I came across it when I googled Long Island Weddings. These photos were so fun to scroll through. They all scream love and happiness. The lanterns are brilliant and the colors perfect! Thanks for sharing your memories and beautiful day……
