DIY Paper Wheels Backdrop

I received a few emails asking for a tutorial on the accordion flower backdrop seen on this gorgeous DIY wedding, and here it is! We made them in two different ways: one like the ones seen at BHLDN, and an easier version of them without the handles (as you may remember seeing a similar one from this project we posted a while ago).

Version 1 (simple, without handles):

What you’ll need:

– 1/8″ hole punch
– Glue
– 3 sheets of paper (8.5″x11″) per fan

Fold the paper lengthwise with 3/4″ or 1/2″ gaps. Fold your accordion in half and glue or staple the ends. Glue the ends of all 3 “pizza wheels” and punch a hole to thread ribbon.

Version 2 (with popsicle sticks) :

What you’ll need:
– Popsicle sticks (we drilled a hole on them using dremel tool, but you can buy them with holes at candle supply stores)
– Glue
– Paper (it can be any patterned paper, either scrapbook or gift wrap will do)

Fold the paper lengthwise with 3/4″ or 1/2″ gaps. Repeat until you have enough pieces to form a wheel. Glue ends, add popsicle stick on each end of your wheel et voila!

  1. This is perfect! I wanted some bright, free, recycled decor for my daughter’s 1st bday. The Teacher’s Discovery Mag plus this tutorial did the trick! Multicolored hanging paper wheels all around! Thanks!

  2. I tried to figure this out without the tutorial what a mess!!! Thank you for posting this much easier with help!!

  3. great tutorial!

however….can anyone advise as to where to get paper which works well for these? I have looked at michaels, online, etc….and am having a hard time finding something in the middle ground between construction paper and 110 lb cardstock.

    1. Hi, Were you able to find the paper anywhere? I am in the same boat and I am having trouble finding good quality paper.
