DIY Paper Feather Backdrop

If you ask me, today’s DIY project is the perfect touch for any boho inspired wedding or party. Who doesn’t love it when some feathers join in on the fun? Kathryn Godwin of Studio Cultivate recently shared this creative + fun paper feather backdrop (with Emily Chidester Photography capturing it all on camera), and we especially adore the idea of it as a cake display accent!

For this project, you will need:
-self-healing cutting mat
-cardstock paper in color of choice
-x-acto knife or scissors
-thread
-feather templates (free download)

Instructions:
1. Print these templates of feathers. These can be scaled when printed to have more sizes than the two provided.

2. Trace onto card stock and cut with an x-acto knife on a self-healing mat.

3. Cut thread to the lengths desired for the backdrop.

4. Starting at the end of the thread, wrap around feather stem and double knot. Continue tying on feathers every 6-18 inches.

Tips:
-If you desire a more dense backdrop, tie the feathers closer together on the string, if you want a light and airy presence like we created tie them further apart.
-You can also import this template into the Silhouette application and have the machine cut for you.
-To keep from tangling in transport, layer sheets of paper between individual chains of feathers.
-To tie the decor throughout the event use the feathers on the table for touches of details, as escort cards, have your florist add them to your bouquet, or add them to your flower crown.
