1950s Technicolor Inspired Wedding

Give me a bride whose icon is Doris Day, and I’ll show you one happy blogger. Bride Chanmony styled her wedding aesthetic around Doris’ films from the 1940s and 50s, used colors that florist Megan of Honey and Poppies described as “1950s technicolor sherbet,” and danced her first dance with hubby Jeff to Doris Day’s “It All Depends On You.” He and She Photography was there to capture this blissful, color-filled day to utter perfection!

From the bride, Chanmony: The feel that we wanted was fun and us. Something that reflected our personality and what was important to us. Family, laughter and fun. Our big theme was Doris Day. She is my idol… like I get swept up talking about her. I love her and the feeling of her movies from the 40-50’s. Megan (our incredible florist from Honey and Poppies) helped guide us towards a direction for colors scheme, which were, as she puts it “50’s technicolor sherbet.” Adjectives: Fun, vibrant, cool, crazy, hilarious, humbling and sweet.

As for DIY projects, there were a ton. I started with making our save the dates and then making all the little details that we (Jeff and I) or some of our geeky friends will know. I made a lot of Doctor Who things, like the bride and groom Daleks. My vow book is a book from Doctor Who. My sister and I collaborated in making a sign for the flower wrapping station. She painted and I did the crafty stuff. I painted the door silhouettes.

The programs were actually kinda fun to make because of all the different covers we had and because I’m somewhat of a nerd and figured how to make the programs layout the way I wanted and also was able to explain our knot tying bit in our ceremony because that was something from the Cambodian culture that we wanted to incorporate. Also, the guestbook were madlibs sheets that were fun for the guest and we can bind them easily and have a book to look through because we had a bunch of guest that made great illustration.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? My best advice is give yourself enough time to plan and make sure that the wedding is a reflection of you as a couple. Trust the people you hired; they are the professional and they make things so much easier. Saying that, hire vendors that match your style.
