Oregon Beach Wedding
Lauren and Derek wanted their wedding to be two things: elegant and simple. They artfully achieved this by keeping the day personal, making the majority of the decor by hand, and hiring K Miller Photographs to capture the day brilliantly. How can you go wrong when you have a ceremony on the rocky beaches of Oregon’s coast?
From the bride, Lauren: I envisioned a small wedding, affordable, not too elaborate or over our capacity, but still beautiful. Simple is beautiful. This was a total DIY wedding, from the flowers to the dessert, to the decor, music, and dress.
Our wedding plans had quite a huge hiccup in that our venue hosts cancelled all their events over 10 people because they did not have proper land use permits (it was a privately owned lodge in Hood River, OR). We found out 6 months after planning everything, and 3 months until the wedding. This venue was our ceremony, reception, and wedding party lodging, and it was 6 hours away from where we live. We disappointedly choose a spot 5 minutes away from our house on the Oregon coast – a community center that shared a building with a post office. Who would have known that (with a little bit of love) this little spot above the sea would turn out to be the most perfect place for us and our family and dear friends.
My wedding dress, another funny story. I found a simple white dress on ShopBop $100. It was not “ready” as a wedding dress, so I had someone add layers to the bottom (the front was short, just past the knees, and the back just hit above my ankles – sort of an awkward length). 3 different kinds of lace were added to the front and back to make layers, and a train with a pick up was included in the back.
Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Make sure your vendors ALL have contracts in which they sign in addition to you. If you are doing DIY, start collecting things now. I think hair and makeup was the thing (looking in photos) that I wish I would have spent a little time figuring out beforehand what I was going to do. Since I didn’t plan, I just sort of winged it. I don’t wear much makeup so I was a little timid in that department and looking at photos wish I would have gone a little more bold – photos don’t come out the way you see yourself in the moment – so don’t be too timid with the eye makeup for you ladies who don’t normally wear much!
My cousin is a guitarist and he played our ceremony; he played some classical guitar as the guests were arriving at the beach site.
