Caleb and Karli’s Indie Washington Wedding

This Washington wedding, captured by photographer Ben Blood, has plenty of DIY to get your brains spinning. I’m lusting after the reception decor: that hanging fabric bunting and that massive, romantic ceiling of light over the dance floor are so romantic! They turned a non-event space into a dream venue with a little creative juice and a lot of DIY commitment. Go and revel in it.

From the bride. I wanted things to look hand crafted with some antique/vintage type details. Rustic vintage is where we ended up. We used lot’s of old fence boards that my grandpa and I put together for the centerpieces. My grandpa also built the backdrop for the ceremony.

The ceremony and reception were at our church in Spokane, Washington. It has absolutely no character and is far from an event facility, but was a great blank canvas and it’s right on the river so we had the ceremony outside.

Our color scheme was yellow, muted blues and lavenders, greys and tans. Lot’s of DIY all around. Corsages, boutonnieres, ties, centerpieces, decor, paper goods, photo wall, flowers, food, everything! I had lots of help of course.

Caleb and I (and our families) are musicians. So we spent the most time orchestrating the music element of the event. We had all live music! Symmetry/Symmetry played an original instrumental for the prelude and also the bridal march. Joel Smith played an old country tune for the procession. Caleb’s grandpa sang during communion. Two of my bridesmaids and a friend sang during the unity sand. Caleb’s brother sang the mother/son father/daughter dance. My brother’s blues band was backup band for our first dance and played for one half of the dancing portion of the reception. And Davey Ingersoll, Caleb’s cousin was our DJ for the rest of the dancing.

Advice for brides-to-be. Know your limits and don’t try to do everything. Ask for help and be a delegator. Also, the week of the wedding: focus on relationships. Your friends and family and your groom are there because they love you and like hanging out with you. And hopefully vice versa. Revel in THAT, not the event so much. Lastly, have someone be your week of the wedding coordinator. Someone to tell people what to do and where to be. That is something you should not DIY.

  • So so beautiful! Question for the happy couple: are the lights hanging from the ceiling in the picture of you dancing regular strands of white lights, or are they a special kind of strand? I love the look and would like to replicate at my wedding. Thanks!

  • the lights were normal christmas lights! just tons of them. 🙂

the grooms suit was actually from macy’s. it was the groomsmen’s pants that were from express.

  • Hey KD,

The lights were just tons of clear christmas lights that we borrowed from friends and strung together. Just don’t do too many on one string or you will blow the little fuses. I was sooo happy with how it turned out.

  • Thanks so much for the info, Caleb and Karli. The lights (and everything else!!) really did turn out so beautiful!

  • Those Christmas lights across the ceiling are a brilliant choice. Love everything about it, and especially the personality in that last photo. You two rock!

  • Beautiful, quirky, colorful, and full of personality – the way I think all weddings should be! It looks like such a fun and special day. I love the bridesmaids’ dresses and the whole uniquely antique feel of the wedding – it was vintage but still fun and not at all old-fashioned. I’m feeling super-inspired by these photos, thanks for sharing this beautiful wedding!
