Entry #8: DIY Vintage Hair Comb

Next entry for our DIY Contest is from Caroline, who sent this project all the way from Ireland! If you’re planning a rock ‘n roll wedding, today is your lucky day. Caroline used a raven’s skull, amongst other vintage pieces to create a headband to wear at her brother’s wedding.

From Caroline:
I made this headpiece to wear to my brothers wedding in Tuscany, Italy. I had bought a really pretty vintage dress, very demure and ladylike and i wanted to give it a bit of a funky edge. So I thought, what’s edgier than a skull?

What you’ll need:

- rhinestone applique
- vintage flowers
- vintage brooch
- hair comb
- a ravens skull (optional, taxidermy skull found at antique shop)

Instructions:

I sewed the applique to the comb, then the skull on to the applique. I arranged the flowers around and glued them into place and finally added the little brooch to one of the flowers. Quick and simple!

Spreading the local love!

After seeing the preview of Net-a-Porter’s new wedding boutique collection, I’m even more giddy to check out in person tomorrow evening! Photos to come. Stay tuned.

Speaking of dabomb diggity bomb events, Brooklyn Bride is hosting a two day wedding event for wedding vendors, bloggers (yeah!) and brides called Urban Wed. There’s only 150 tickets available for each night so everyone can chat and get to know everyone, and the first 100 to buy tickets get a gift bag. Great opportunity to meet vendors you see online in person. Look for me on the 24th if you wanna chat! For more info and tickets visit Urban Wed.

Another great event is the 2010 New York Weddings Event, from New York Weddings magazine. From makeup trial to table design galore, this April event is another must see. If you’re getting married in the NYC area, this is a good opportunity to get your offline wedding fix!

The Vintage Bride is a Ruffled’s reader dream come true. They carry a gorgeous selection of vintage wedding dresses from all decades and offer free shipping on all items. You can also return your dress in case it is not what you were expecting (if it didn’t fit right, changed your mind etc), which I think is a make or break deal when shopping online for vintage garments.

The pink ruffled dress on the right reminds me of this gorgeous vintage bride I featured a few weeks ago!

Free Marketplace just launched!

I can’t believe it’s finally here! It was truly a labor of love. I can’t begin to tell you how long it took, but you can imagine the crazy happy dance I am doing right now. The free marketplace was created for readers so they can now buy or sell wedding items used in their vintage inspired weddings. This new feature is free and deliciously easy to use.

Check out the free wedding classifieds page to start selling!

The gallery page is not populated just yet since it just launched, but thumbnail images will enlarge on mouse ouver, which will make it easier when browsing through several items. You will also be able to communicate directly with the seller, using a quick “send message to seller” form. The form never shows the seller’s email publicly, unless of course the seller prefers listing her/his email address in the description field as well.

Brides searching for wedding items that would like to purchase can also make an ad to alert newlyweds what they’re looking to buy. All sellers can upload up to 4 photos to help make it sell faster. We highly recommend using this feature, taking photos of different angles of what you’re selling and pointing out any flaws in the description.

To keep our community marketplace tidy and in harmony, all ads are reviewed and approved prior to going live. It’s all yours folks, enjoy!

Before I post today’s vintage wedding feature, I wanted to share some exciting news that will be happening on Ruffled. Next week we will be officially launching our classified section for our brides. Differentiating us from the other wedding classifieds out there, we have created a free marketplace for vintage brides with minds alike to buy and sell gently used items for their vintage inspired weddings. Birdcages, cake toppers, chandeliers, table runners, wedding signs, vintage vases, mercury glass votives, mason jars… if you’re already a reader you probably would like to purchase or sell some of these items.

Readers will have a dedicated space to list their items rather than just using the comments section in isolated blog posts (like here and here to name a few occasions were readers could benefit from such service). You will be able to shop locally to possibly arrange pick up too. The page is user-friendly, and better yet, no need to create accounts.

I am excited, anxious and happy all at the same time!
