Ball and Chain Inspiration Shoot

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Tyler Branch Photo

We never shy away from a bit of rock and roll chic, so when we saw this styled shoot from Rachael of laceandlikes and Tyler Branch Photo, we were pretty smitten. Rachael took the idea of a man and his “ball ‘n chain” and a whiskey bar, and added some touches of desert bohemia for an inspiration shoot sure to inspire both edgy and whimsical couples alike.

whiskey bar engagement party

From the stylist, Rachael of laceandlikes: I was really inspired by motorcycle culture and bohemia. The whole concept of riding out to the desert with your ol’ lady, (or your ball ‘n chain) on the back of your bike is so romantic to me. I wanted it to feel deserted, edgy and beautiful all at once.

There are inspirations brought in from Native American culture as well, such as the feather in the bride’s hair and the dreamcatcher backdrop. I suppose you could call it “Rebel Without a Cause” meets desert hippies meets classically beautiful. Also — I absolutely love Makers Mark and whiskey in general so I just had to bring that in as well ;)

Rock and Roll Chic Wedding

EE photography

We couldn’t admire Katy of Sweet Sunday Events more for simultaneously embracing incredible event styling and the ideology that “less is more.” Katy and her team assembled this oh-so-chic rocker wedding shoot at Austin’s The Union on Eighth with images snapped by the ever-wonderful EE Photography. Get ready for some seriously awesome installations and a DIY tutorial to follow!

rock and roll couples

From the designer, Katy of Sweet Sunday Events: Sometimes, some things are left better simple, wouldn’t you say? The Union on Eighth was the perfect venue to provide the industrial, rustic feeling for this rocker chic wedding. A hanging chain installation created quite the alter with the addition of candles and foliage. A paper runner spilled off the industrial mod table as a lush arrangement of foliage and soft white flowers added color without too much fuss. Oh, and how we can’t forget the stunning bride and groom—effortlessly styled to the nines. I’d definitely say some things are really that much better when left simple!

Rock ‘n Roll Festival Inspired Wedding

DIY Weddings

Photos by:

The theme for this wedding from Tiffany Arment is one of my absolute favorites — “rock n roll festival.” With a wedding playlist to envy and reception tables marked by vinyl albums from rock music history, this day is filled with details perfectly tailored to the couple.

newlyweds in the grass

From the bride, Jacki: We just wanted a wonderfully laid back, HAPPY day filled with our friends, family, natural rustic surroundings, great music, yummy food and a whole lotta LOVE. With my creative friends and family, I knew that the rest of it would come together beautifully.

The theme was ‘Rock ‘n Roll Festival’. We both love music so much — it is a huge part of our lives, and we really wanted our wedding to reflect that. Every song was hand-picked for each part of the day to create a specific nostalgic and happy feeling.

bride and groom celebrating

We were getting married in a barn. I didn’t want to fight its natural beauty, so we went with a natural color scheme — cream, tan, brown, green and blue. Practically the whole wedding was DIY. I designed and made my own invitations, favors (jam jars and CDs), name cards and programs, the table ‘numbers’ came from our own vinyl collection, my Dad made our rings, one of my best friends made my gown, my best friend and maid of honor (who introduced us) got ordained to marry us and wrote our ceremony… it was truly a group effort!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Take it easy and have fun with it! Remember that it’s the marriage that matters most… this is just one day out of the rest of your married life. Things are going to go wrong, and other unexpected things are going to go sooooooooo right that they make up for it! Stop worrying so much because you can’t control it all! In the end, it is going to be the most wonderful day of your life… you got to MARRY him! How lucky are YOU?

Bohemian Corona del Mar Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

We absolutely love that bride Laurel pulled inspiration from bohemian poster child Stevie Nicks for her wedding day, captured by True Bliss Photography. Her gown paired with luscious florals by Pixie’s Petals with deep reds and feathers is perfection in our book. In an intimate celebration, the bride Laurel and groom Brad stayed true to who they are as a couple, and it paid off in spades!

Brad & Laurel's Bohemian Wedding

From the bride, Laurel: Brad and I have been together for 7 years and got engaged in December of 2010. I didn’t get deep into the process of planning until about April and when I started I knew I wanted to stay very true to who Brad and I are as people and as a couple. I wanted something very simple but with very obvious elements of our style. I had absolutely no idea where to start but I kept saying dark, rustic, romantic, bohemian, gypsy, Stevie Nicks in my head. I got hooked up very fast with the most amazing person and florist Leslie at Pixie’s Petals and we decided to use dark romantic flowers with moss accents on the tables and vintage vases.

Brad & Laurel's Bohemian Wedding

I went through about 6 different dresses before I found “the one.” I really wanted elements of Stevie Nicks to be in the dress and it seems that bridal designers assume we all want to look like cupcakes on our wedding day so I was very discouraged when FINALLY I found my dress at the last minute on a website that I use to buy my every day clothes. Our ceremony was very small (35 people) and it was held in a small park overlooking Newport Coast. I walked to “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac played by an acoustic guitar and our arch was wrapped in lace and had hanging lanterns swaying above us. We dined and danced to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra in candlelight… I’ve been in the clouds ever since.

From the bride, Karen: The style of our wedding was modern french chic – as our venue had just been through a makeover, it was fitting to make the style sleek french style, lots of chrome, shiny surfaces whilst still maintaining a ‘high tea’ feel to the room.

Our ceremony was completely composed by us and reflected our sense of humor, whilst maintaining a level of seriousness. There were a lot of laughs throughout and 3 surprise readings from 3 special women close to us. At the end of the day, we wanted our guests to enjoy the big party we put on without having to travel between ceremony and reception. We served champagne for guests whilst the ceremony took place and had an open bar all night.

We wanted lots of different areas for our guests to be involved in, from our high tea station with personalized tea bags, to the typewriter desk, to the huge desert buffet, the cupcake tower and the separate lolly buffet. The dessert and lolly buffets were a great icebreaker for our guests.

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

From Katherine, the photographer: Erin & Jason were inspired by their love of music and the city of Austin for their awesome wedding at Star Hill Ranch! They printed and framed classic vintage photos of their favorite musicians for their table arrangements and seating charts. They also had their two favorites bands play a street dance in the middle of Star Hill Ranch’s main street. The Trisha’s opened and then T bird and the Breaks played until their exit. The first dance “Big River” by Johnny Cash, Jason is also a musician and played “The Weight” by The Band and Erin and her family started off the Father Daughter dance with “My Girl” by The Temptations.

Retro Brisbane Wedding

The bride’s vintage pin-up hairstyle, the flower girls’ poofy skirts, the intimate ceremony venue… all of these things add up to perfection. Steven Elmer picked up this wedding and knocked it out of the park — every image is a peek into how special the day truly was for the couple and their guests. There are loads more photos to be seen in the gallery, so don’t miss it!

vintage punk rock australian wedding

From the bride, Tegan: More than anything we wanted a very relaxed, family-based wedding that children, including our own two girls, would be happy to be a part of. We went for a bright garden party style of reception at our place where everyone could be comfortable and enjoy each others’ company. There was also a bit of a retro feel that came from our love of 50s style, tattoos and rock ‘n’ roll.

vintage punk rock australian weddingvintage punk rock australian wedding

vintage punk rock australian wedding

Homemade, retro, casual, family, fun, rockin’ are a few of the adjectives I’d use to describe our wedding. We didn’t really have a theme, though we did use a lot of red, blue and yellow in our decorations, the central colours used in old school tattoos that we both love. We also had a bit of a retro 50s style running throughout the day, which wasn’t planned but came about from our own personal style.

vintage punk rock australian weddingvintage punk rock australian wedding

There were a lot of DIY aspects to our wedding. We had the reception at home in our yard so all of the decorations were done by family. Most of the food was also made by family and friends, something we really wanted from the get-go because there are so many delicious things we love and grew up eating! My father-in-law did a special wedding homebrew beer, complete with custom labels, to celebrate the occasion as well! I made the flowers for my bouquet and my fantastic sisters and sister-in-law finished it off for me so that I had one less detail to stress over!

vintage punk rock australian weddingvintage punk rock australian wedding

vintage punk rock australian wedding

Tegan’s advice for future brides: I know everyone always says don’t stress over everything, accept help from anyone who offers etc, etc. But I also know from experience that it’s hard not to get wound up and try and do everything yourself! What I will say is the day before your big day do as little wedding-related stuff as possible. Go out for dinner and talk about everything but the wedding, spend time on your own reading a book, watching a movie or whatever. What is going to be will be and there is no point trying to change or finish anything last minute! Enjoy some wedding free time and on the day if things aren’t set up exactly how you wanted or the samosas don’t get served (yep, happened at my wedding), what does it matter? You’re marrying the person you love!

50s Retro Brunch Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

Personally, I fell in love with this photoshoot as soon as I saw the mini waffle towers. Seriously, how perfect is that? I love the idea of presenting food underneath an apothecary jar! This shoot of real-life couple Tabitha and Cynthia was made possible by a list of ridiculously talented vendors, including Amanda Doublin, Sweet Emilia Jane, Sweets Indeed, Christa Rose Florals, and Lovey Bridal just to name a few. Thanks to such a great team for sharing your work with us! Be sure to check out model Tabitha’s aptly titled blog, Ms. Awesome, here.

retro 1950s rock n roll inspiration shootretro 1950s rock n roll inspiration shoot

From the stylist, Emilia: I have a soft spot in my heart for intimate at-home weddings of yore that usually took place morning or mid-day. Think of Father of the Bride… no, not with Steve Martin… the original with Elizabeth Taylor. They were on their way out the door for their honeymoon by dusk! I would love to see the mid-day wedding make a comeback. You’ll save oodles by just serving mimosas or a fun build-your-own bloody Mary bar instead of a full bar. Plus brunch food is the best – pancakes, waffles, donuts, loads of syrup! I could seriously eat brunch all day long. That is where the inspiration for this shoot first started.

But I didn’t want to create a shabby chic, pastel-hued brunch wedding… I wanted it to be a little rock ‘n roll and a lot of fun. We used a ’50s diner as inspiration and brought in bright colors like magenta, teal and coral. Gold tones brought a little elegance to the vintage doo-woppy decor. Sweets Indeed put together an amazing brunch table with mini-pancake and waffle stacks, french toast, donuts… it was all so delicious!

For a cheap decor element, I used loads of tissue paper for the fringe wall, confetti and the homemade popper favors. Head on over to Wal-mart after Easter (or any major holiday) and you can find packages of tissue paper in a every color for super cheap. And it doesn’t take that much at all to do a lot. My favorite element were the poppers that I made by cutting paper towel rolls into thirds, filling them with confetti + taffy and wrapping them up in paper. Super easy and super cute! Plus they really pop!

Christa Rose put a spin on the carnation… a poor flower that gets a bad reputation… by mixing various shades with craspedia. She even spray-painted the white carnations gold which looked really awesome! I loved the look of the carnation clusters in the more modern IKEA vases.

I know this might seem obvious to some people but a fast way to stay within budget is to stick to a small guest list. So many of the major elements – catering, rentals, flowers – are based on the number of guests or at least the number of tables. Keeping the guest count small will keep the bottom line small. We imagined an at-home wedding for about 35 people. Even though we created a tablescape, you wouldn’t even need to have set tables. Create little lounge areas with the already existing furniture and let people mingle and sit where they’d like. You’ll be able to spend more time with the people you love and have more money left over to splurge on something that is really important to you.

Pink Christmas Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Thank you to everyone who applied for the position. We will be in touch with applicants who we believe are the best fit, so please sit tight!

Personality, personality, personality! Chelsea and Brock were determined to infuse their day with plenty of it and the final product is a day full of fanciful color, favorite foods, amazing design and cozy holiday details. A wedding photographer herself, the bride had in mind exactly what she wanted out of her big day and started curating knick-knacks and attire that perfectly reflect her relationship with her fiance. I love how Chelsea describes the reception as “a world that reflects all that you and your hubby love!” You said it, my friend. Thanks to Jamie Delaine for the amazing photos!

From the uber-creative bride, Chelsea. Our colors were red and green originally. Red is Brock’s favorite color (one of his alma mater’s colors) and bright green is my absolute favorite color–I drive a green Beetle and all of my own business branding is green. The red and green really worked since we were having the wedding so close to Christmas. Then, I decided on a pink dress and started adding in touches of pink everywhere and the vision came together.

I acted in college and love the arts in general (Brock is a musician and I am a photographer) and decided that I would love the look of a black theater that gave me free reign to decorate as I desired. We had three pieces of furniture on stage, symbolic of the home we are building together. When we exited after being announced hubby and wifey, all of our family threw fresh long stem roses on stage, reminiscent of classical theatre!

I did all of the planning and coordinating myself, which may not be right for some brides, but being a professional wedding photographer myself, I knew JUST what I wanted. With our invitations, we sent out “tickets” that our guests signed and dropped in a box at the ceremony instead of a standard guest book. When our guests entered the ceremony, there was a red vintage suitcase with all of the programs in it as well as the “ticket box.”

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? To start with, your wedding day ia ALL about you and your hubby. Don’t ever forget that. Be respectful and sweet when family members and even friends try to tell you how it should be done, or what tradition is, etc, but remain firm in what YOU want for your wedding day.

Entry #8: DIY Vintage Hair Comb

Uncategorized

Photos by:

Next entry for our DIY Contest is from Caroline, who sent this project all the way from Ireland! If you’re planning a rock ‘n roll wedding, today is your lucky day. Caroline used a raven’s skull, amongst other vintage pieces to create a headband to wear at her brother’s wedding.

From Caroline:
I made this headpiece to wear to my brothers wedding in Tuscany, Italy. I had bought a really pretty vintage dress, very demure and ladylike and i wanted to give it a bit of a funky edge. So I thought, what’s edgier than a skull?

What you’ll need:

– rhinestone applique
– vintage flowers
– vintage brooch
– hair comb
– a ravens skull (optional, taxidermy skull found at antique shop)

DIY Vintage Hair Comb skull rock 'n roll wedding

Instructions:

I sewed the applique to the comb, then the skull on to the applique. I arranged the flowers around and glued them into place and finally added the little brooch to one of the flowers. Quick and simple!

To enter our DIY Contest, simply email us 4-5 photos that are 600 pixels wide each, instructions and a list of materials to amanda @ruffledblog.com. Remember the first place winner will receive $500 and the second winner a $100 gift certificate to Wendy Mink Jewelry. Last day to enter is this Thursday, March 25. Good luck!

Black and White Bridal Style

Fashion & Beauty

Photos by:

Nathalie from Luxe Fête sent over this photoshoot and instead of focusing on decor I thought it would be great to spotlight the couple’s style – and how you can do it on a budget. The bride’s fluffy short wedding dress with layers and layers of tulle is by Dolce & Gabbana, but you can find an equally gorgeous short wedding dress for a more affordable route (see our round up of 15 Vintage Inspired Wedding Dresses for under $500 and last year’s 10 Vintage Inspired Wedding Dresses for under $500). The groom’s vintage tuxedo is from C. Madeleine’s Vintage Boutique, proof that grooms can also find vintage clothing to wear for their wedding.

I am loving the black gloves – it reminds me of this post I made about darling gloves for vintage weddings nearly one year ago.
