Long Island City Wedding

Vintage Weddings

Long Island City’s Metropolitan Building is always an absolute stunner of a venue, but it’s even more stunning to see how couples come in and make it their own each time. Marisa and Chris put their own vintage-inspired spin on the wedding reception, which included mercury glass centerpieces and votive holders, with modern touches to keep it all current as captured by Amber Gress.

From the bride, Marisa: Honestly, we didn’t have a ‘vision’, we just wanted a wedding that felt true to us and our collective style. The venue really helped shape everything…. the second we walked into the Metropolitan Building, we knew that was where we wanted to get married; it just felt right. Everything else came together around that.

Our wedding was classic with a vintage feel. We didn’t have a theme or color scheme really. Chris designed the invites, programs and escort cards and I helped [a little :)] so that was fun. We also were able to select furniture from the venue to place throughout the room, which was really cool… luckily I have great friends with excellent taste who helped scour through their massive vintage furniture pieces to choose the right ones! Garrett was super resourceful and rescued some beautiful flowers that were going to be thrown away… they were the perfect colors so we were able to use them!

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Choose vendors whose work you admire and who you trust, that is what truly makes it easier. And remember to take a step back and enjoy as many moments as you can… for the most part it should be a fun experience and if everything isn’t absolutely perfect, it’s OK, you are probably the only one who will notice!

Metropolitan Building Wedding

We absolutely love that brides are starting to look outside of the bridal boutiques and in less traditional places for wedding fashion ideas, and bride Collette’s wedding day look is a perfect illustration of this — her one-shouldered Tadashi Shoji gown has our hearts aflutter, and far more affordable than your average wedding day dress! Of course, we’re in love with every other bit of her wedding too, which you’ll see photographed to perfection by Katie Osgood:

From the bride, Collette: Many of our guests had never been to NYC before, so we really wanted a venue that represented the style and energy that the city offers. Our venue located in a warehouse heavy area of Long Island City gave our guests a hidden gem that was both classic and chic, with views of Manhattan from Queens. The venue has exposed brick walls, wood floors, natural lighting and a ton of unique pieces that we felt represented our style.

We both didn’t want to look at our photos 20 years down the road and have anything feel too dated. The venue offered so many interesting pieces and collectibles (antique travel trunks, chaise lounges, mismatched chairs) which made it much easier to personalize. As for color themes, we wanted kept it classic and chic. White, light pinks and soft metallics were the primary colors.

From the photographer, Katie: It’s pretty simple, John + Collette wanted a wedding that was simple and classic with a touch of vintage elegance. I think they pretty much nailed it. There wasn’t anything too ostentatious, but the few details they did have seemed to fit her description to a T. Collette’s dress and bouquet were probably my favorite.

As for the photography, we couldn’t have asked for better light or a better location. The Metropolitan Building in Long Island City, NY is a location packed with tons of prop furniture (I’m talking stacks of wardrobes, pillars, pictures frames, you name it). There are tons of rooms and four different floors with varying motifs so we were really able to take our pick when it came to choosing where to shoot. John and Collette had lots of family from the west coast so it was the prefect space to showcase just how unique the New York City can be. As a photographer I felt a little bit like a kid on Christmas while shooting John + Collette in this space. It was an absolute treat!
