Whimsical Bohemian Wedding in Australia

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

Lara Hotz

Get yourselves ready, because we’ve got a doozy for you. The images from today’s wedding photographed by Lara Hotz were all but impossible to narrow down, thanks in no small part to the bride’s design aesthetic and the floral decor from Jardine Botanic. Claire and David’s Wes Anderson meets picnic in the park is truly one for the books!

Oh, and keep an eye out tomorrow for a very special giveaway just for Ruffled readers!

From the bride, Claire: We love the Australian bush and we wanted to hero our native landscape in all of it’s raw, natural beauty, so our inspiration was drawn from the Australian landscape. That mixed with a relaxed festival vibe, a touch of 1960s, oh and we LOVE Wes Anderson so definitely wanted some quirky elements. Think Moonrise Kingdom meets Picnic at Hanging Rock!

David is a craft beer enthusiast and brewed four different varieties of beer and a cider for our guests to enjoy – we even home grew the hops for one of the beers! We sourced the vintage fabric which was used for a lot of our cushions and made into napkins with the help of our Mums and Claire’s sister. We created the Polaroid photo booth and took time to source great vintage props, and brought some props from home. We also did all our signage, designed our logo which was used throughout our stationary and on our favours (enamel mugs), sourced smoke flares, the photo board, tents, s’mores and everything we could to make the day look and feel great. All these touches really came together with the hard work and vision of Jardine Botanic and She Designs on the day.

Jardine, our florist, used the hops David grew to decorate the cake, for the boutonniere and for our chairs at the dinner table David and I collected all of the hanging table foliage from around the property and the boys rigged it above the banquet table on the day. For the rest of our flowers Jardine used a real eclectic mix. Some Australian natives, some beautiful mustard tea roses, dahlias etc.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? While there are hairy moments during the planning, resist the urge to throw it all in and elope (unless of course that’s what you want). All of your hard work will be worth it. Also, take action early on and just get the big things organised. It means the days and weeks before can be spent getting the little things done and working on those fun projects. Also, trust your vendors. If you chose them because you like their work, then get out of the way and let them do what they do best.

Delia and Jeff’s wedding is jam packed with DIY. Along with lots of little handmade details, the rain and the stories they have to tell are really what makes this wedding so sweet. Shot by Boston photographer Channing Johnson, this woodsy New York wedding will have us pinning from end to end!

We had always envisioned people lounging around on blankets, playing cards and field games, dancing and frolicking, but we also wanted to balance the casual vibe with a sophisticated look.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Something will always go wrong – be prepared ahead of time to laugh it off! When things get tough, it’s so easy to forget the real reason you’re arranging those flowers, baking those cupcakes or packaging your favors. You’re getting MARRIED- and that’s an awesome thing on its own.

Delia also shared the ups and downs of having a DIY wedding, as well as all of her insights and lessons learned on her blog.

Kick off your heels and dust off your picnic baskets, because this wedding is a total midsummer pick-me-up. Jennifer and Josh skipped a formal reception and decided to have a vintage picnic wedding with pops of Americana throughout. The cutest part? They used picnic baskets as their centerpieces and aisle decor! Thanks Whitney Huynh for sharing this summer wedding with us.

Australian Countryside Wedding

Garden Weddings

Today’s wedding has us absolutely tittering with excitement. It proves that a grand budget is by no means necessary for a drop-dead gorgeous, down-home celebration. The bride recruited her family and friends for an abundance of DIY projects, from bunting to flowers to the most adorable but simple wedding favor — grapes of every color in little brown bags! Every moment was delicately captured by the always superb Anna Rose Photography.

From the bride, Tiffany: Paul and I wanted our wedding to have an intimate, personal feel as well as being bright and casual. I would describe our wedding as happy, colourful, fun… with a bit of a country, garden fete feel. I didn’t want it to look too coordinated or formal so we steered clear of any particular colour scheme or theme.

We were on a very small budget but thankfully we both have incredibly talented, resourceful families and friends. Our whole wedding was pretty much DIY so there are too many projects to mention… a couple of the big stand-outs were the bunting, flowers, favours and cushions.

australian countryside wedding

My Mum is a superstar at sourcing cheap fabric. For our bunting; she collected various pastel designs which my Aunty Trish, Mum, friend Pip and I all cut into triangles (30cm sides) with “zig-zag” scissors. This prevented fraying and meant we didn’t have to hem the sides. Mum then sewed 90m of triangles onto bias binding. You’re awesome Mum!

australian countryside weddingaustralian countryside wedding

My sister planted 80 flower seedlings three months before the wedding. The day before, we transferred them into little aluminium pots from Ikea and scattered them around the garden for some extra colour.

australian countryside wedding

For our favours, we bought small brown paper bags from ebay, stamped the front of the bags with a black “thank you” stamp (from etsy) and trimmed the tops with zig-zag scissors. We then lined them with clear plastic bags and filled with summer fruits. They were a big hit at the end of the night.

To create seating areas, we scattered throw rugs and cushions around the garden and over a low limestone wall. The cushions were made by a family friend using pastel coloured fabrics and buttons. The throw rugs were borrowed or from Ikea.

DIY Australian Wedding

DIY Weddings

Photos by:

Sometimes weddings are so personal, we feel like we’re getting a private glimpse into a party among lifelong friends. Such is the case with this homespun DIY wedding for Katherine and Chris, one of the most beautiful young couples we’ve seen yet! Katherine took great pleasure in breaking the traditional wedding “mold,” opting instead for a laid-back ceremony and reception with decorations put together over nine months with the help of her husband and close friends. Make sure you check out every image captured by the superb Jen Regan of Anna Rose Photography.

diy australian wedding

From the bride, Katherine: It was really important to us that our wedding was as laid-back and fun as possible. Neither of us are “fancy” people, so a traditional formal wedding was never on the cards! I am somewhat obsessed with DIY, so everything I thought I could do myself, I did, with help from Chris, my bridesmaids and our families. I made our guestbook poster using an awesome Snellen eye chart font that I downloaded. The owner of my old workplace was throwing away a bunch of old paintings, which I scavenged. I spray painted the frames white and painted over the canvas with chalkboard paint from Bunnings to make the various signs for the reception.

diy australian weddingdiy australian wedding

For 9 months, friends and family collected glass jars which I decorated with hessian (burlap), lace and twine, and were used throughout the wedding as vases, table numbers, candle holders, etc. My bridesmaids and our friend Brittany helped me make the table numbers and the buntings in a frantic crafting morning on my maid of honours birthday (about two weeks before the wedding)!

diy australian wedding

When people asked the colourscheme of our wedding (which happened a lot!), I told them “black, white, grey, cream, tan and every pastel colour”! I found it way easier to style everything based on a theme, rather than a colour scheme. Apparently Walt Disney used to tell his illustrators “keep it cute”, and that kind of became our style mantra for the wedding.

diy australian weddingdiy australian wedding

Any advice for future brides? Don’t be afraid to do your own thing – but do be prepared for a lot of raised eyebrows! Some advice I wish I had followed: Don’t waste your energy worrying about other people will think. I heard of people (friends, in fact) saying things like “a wedding is supposed to be a WEDDING,” and that what we were planning didn’t measure up. People may try to tell you that a wedding needs to have x, y and z (big white dress, limo and roses maybe?) to be a “real wedding,” but that’s just not true! The opinions of you and your husband are the only ones that matter. You are the only people that will look back on your wedding day as a defining moment in your lives, so why waste your time worrying about the opinions of people for whom it is just another party? After many sleepless nights worrying about what people would say about our wedding, the day finally passed and I realised how little what they thought actually mattered!
My second piece of advice is try to accept as quickly as possible that your wedding probably won’t be the most original, amazing wedding that there has ever been. Perfection is unattainable, so save the heartache and plan for an imperfect wedding! Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from all the amazing wedding blogs out there. I don’t think I had a single original idea throughout the whole wedding process! But if you want to get philosophical about it, is an original idea even possible these days? An awesome quote that really helped me: “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to the soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch (film maker).

diy australian wedding

How did you pick your venue? Chris and I had our hearts set on a rustic-looking venue where we could have both the ceremony and reception outdoors. Falls Farm is heritage-listed and is one of the oldest homesteads in the Shire of Kalamunda. The cottage actually turns 100 years old this year. Although really dry at this time of year, ended up being perfect! The best part was that family and friends were able to stay at Greenways Bed and Breakfast, directly opposite, and I was able to stay there the night before the wedding and get ready there.

I know I probably say this to every couple I feature, but Natasha and Jeremy is one of the most beautiful couples I’ve ever come across. They had an intimate wedding in Fort Tryon Park in New York City. If you’re visiting NYC or live in the area but have never been to this park, I highly recommend visiting it. The gardens are especially beautiful in the Spring. They had their reception at the Corner Cafe Shop, a really cool space with a vintage flair.
