Elegant Australian Garden Wedding

Romantic Weddings

We think everyone loves a great destination wedding, and so we’re off to Perth, Australia today to get a look at Alysha and Ricky’s trendy garden wedding. Captured by Katie Grant PhotographyCD Weddings turned the outdoor location into an absolutely lovely paradise and to enhance the feel of it, Natural Art Flowers swept in with romantic centerpieces and the sweetest pink peonies that just pop out at you the moment you start rifling through the photos.

From the bride, Alysha: Our colour theme was based around drift wood, blush, gold and a touch of sage. Every little detail of the wedding was given individual attention and thought out, which meant a lot of time was put into personalizing every last detail. It was so important to us to have everything just so, ensuring it really reflected the two of us as a couple. Both Rick and I were so lucky to have met the vendors we did and have such talented people helping us create our dream Wedding. Phenomenal experience, one we are so grateful for and will forever be a beautiful lasting memory.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Enjoy and embrace every moment from the start being the whole planning process and to the very end being the moment you get back to your room from the Wedding. A lot of Brides I know see the planning stage as quite a stressful process, which yes at times it can be, but I think with the right team behind you and provided everything is meant to be, it should come together easily. Enjoy and embrace the journey and trust your instincts.

From the event designer, CD Weddings: Alysha and Ricky love all things nature. Alysha wanted garden roses incorporated into her wedding, so I called our theme “The rose garden by the forest.” When we designed the invitations, we wanted the guests to think they entered a rose garden through an old wooden gate. Ricky wanted a cigar station, so with the help of Alysha’s Mum who has a special talent in finding rare items, we had a fabulous area for the guys to chill out. Every guest found a rock on their place setting to sign and Alysha will later place them into a shadow box for keepsake. The rock also helped keeping the menu and napkin down as the wind was quite strong on that day! Every bridesmaid has a traditional posy, but with this wedding I suggested for them to be paired up to carry a heart, a garland and the flower girls both had a bow and arrow. This is a very close-knit family, so we had a special table set up in the middle of the tent for the whole family to sit on with a special hanging structure made out of robes, lanterns and flowers.

Glam Gatsby Inspired Wedding in Perth

Vintage Weddings

We’re always up for a Great Gatsby inspired wedding, and this one may just be one of our favorites. Carla Atley captured the wedding of Alea and Francois, which was filled to the brim with black and gold paper goods, vintage-inspired bridesmaid dresses, and a love even Gatsby himself would have admired.

From the photographer, Carla Atley: Although my couple Alea and Francois only wanted 4 hours of their wedding professionally photographed, I’m glad I got to cover those 4 hours of the day because they put so much work into organising the ceremony and reception. Alea’s sister (who was a bridesmaid) enjoys photography, so she covered the ‘getting ready’ photos before the ceremony.

The groom, Francois works for an events hire company and he and his wife sourced pieces for their wedding months leading up to their day. Their theme was “The Great Gatsby”, and they really went all out. Alea’s sister was the graphic designer for all her invites, place settings, and general signs/posters at the wedding. The whole wedding was very based on the art deco period.

The bride’s dress was an Anna Campbell Dress and the bridesmaids (who are all Alea’s sisters) wore Adiranna Papell dresses. The bridesmaids also had beautiful corsage flowers on their wrists instead of a bouquet. The flowers for the whole event were just so beautiful. The florist really carried on the theme of Great Gatsby and added springs of pearls and feathers into the reception centrepieces, the brides bouquet and the bridesmaids corsages. The ceremony and reception was on the South Perth foreshore so all the guests got to take in the Perth city skyline as the party got underway.

Teneil Kable

Today’s wedding, sent over from Australia by the incomparable photographer Teneil Kable, truly has it all: a model-worthy bride and groom, a reception packed with deep reds, a precious ringbearer and flower girl, and some ultra stylish wedding guests. I guarantee you’ll find lots to love in this Perth beauty of a wedding, least of all the bride’s incredible gown and accessories from Selia Yang!

From the bride, Bree: We envisioned an intimate dinner party for our closest family + friends, with good food, wine flowing, heartfelt speeches and fun dancing.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Think about the things that matter the most, and (try!) not to stress about the other things. Our main priorities were the celebrant and the photographer – both are privy to the most personal part of your day and you want to feel relaxed and happy around them. Ours were both instrumental in our day feeling so special.

“Ruth is an exceptional artist and artisan! She was very prompt to stay in communication with me throughout my ordering process. She worked with me to make sure that all my needs were met exactly. It was so comforting to work with her through the stressful process of ordering the perfect wedding invitations! I absolutely LOVE the way her products turned out, and cannot wait to send them to all my guests! Thank you SO MUCH Ruth, your kindness and professionalism have helped me more than you know!” ” – Emily D.

After living in the small town of Woods Hole on Cape Cod for nearly 11 years, Ruth, the owner and designer of Concertina Press, moved down to the sunny East coast of Florida to be closer to family. Her Cape Cod map save the date is still widely popular with couples getting married on the Cape, along with the matching wedding invitation. Since moving south she’s added more tropical designs including seahorses, sand dollars and waves.

I don’t think I could ever tire of seeing yellow in weddings — something about its cheerful brightness always feels so fresh. Today’s wedding from Bayly & Moore is no exception — newlyweds Sam and Stephanie wanted a modern, elegant and fun wedding at their dream venue, The Breakwater. Can we talk about this bride’s style for a sec? Heavenly ruffled dress gorgeousness.

The three words Sam and I picked to describe our wedding and help us plan our special day was Fun with our pops of vibrant yellow, ribbon wall, balloons in boxes and tidbits of trivia. Simple and not overcomplicated in the feel and look. Finally Elegant and you can hopefully see!

Our DIY projects were our ceremony ribbon wall (we acquired ribbon through our florist), the balloon in boxes (boxes online an balloons from a party hire store), we whitewashed single bottle wine boxes (online purchase) to double as flower centerpiece holders. We also made our bonbonnieres which were macadamia shortbread biscuits (aka Beryls wedding biscuit we later found) which have been a favourite of ours every Christmas.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Firstly talk about what you and your groom both want on your special day! Before you involve friends and family so you have a clear vision of what you both want on the day, after all it’s YOUR day! secondly I had some amazing advice from a sister who told me to think about three key words to describe what we wanted for our wedding, then when making decisions about other things go ‘does it fit with our words?’. It’s great to keep the direction clear and uncluttered.

This Aussie wedding from Jen Regan of Anna Rose Photography features a color palette we’re currently crushing on: red and purple. Newlyweds Natalia and Flynn decided on a day that was relaxed and personal, with a touch of handmade charm and vintage whimsy. Personally, I’m a tad bit obsessed with Natalia’s vintage-inspired gown by Anaessia

vintage australian bride and groom

From the bride, Natalia: We envisioned something that said us. Red and purple, a dash of black, a sprinkle of buttons, a little bit of vintage and handmade made with feeling. Simple and unique, all in a big pot together. We wanted it to be a relaxed, open and inclusive day where everyone could mingle, feel involved and loved.

Our friend Anne Farrell arranged the decorations for us, she collected white vases, jugs and teapots from op-shops for the flowers and painted a few interesting glass jars white with the flowers pre-arranged by Kate Faulds. Anne also made the seating chart and place cards, small chalk boards for the place cards and a large chalkboard for the seating plan. She borrowed hand dyed, red doilies from a friend as well as collecting a few from op-shops.

bride and groom rings

Our rings were made by Will Francis who also did Natalia’s engagement ring. Flynn’s best man was a jeweller in Perth who suggested Will as he liked his style. On the sly over a series of phone calls, emails and horrible sketches by Flynn and some much more intelligent ideas from Will, the engagement ring was created. A ruby carved into the shape of a button on a band of white gold in the shape of a needle, held together with rose gold thread. Going above and beyond and working under time constraints, Will made out of silver and an actual button (purple) from a friend’s collection a wonderful and quirky temporary engagement ring for Flynn to propose with while in the snow in Boston. For the wedding rings Will created a large needle made of Damascus steal with gold thread for Flynn and a plain white gold band in the shape of a needle for Natalia.

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

Alverstoke Barn Perth Wedding

Rustic Weddings

We always love when an Australian wedding lands in our inbox, especially from the amazing Loren Ioppolo of Nectarine Photography. Super stylish bride Caitlin brought her barn wedding dream to life with the help of close friends, family, and her new husband James. Honestly, how gorgeous is this couple?

Caitlin & James Rustic Country Wedding

From the bride, Caitlin: I had an eye for all things “farm” inspired. We wanted to make our guests feel at home for the day, have a place where they could relax under the shade of the tree’s and explore the antique treasure we had collected.

We didn’t really stick to a colour scheme – I found that whilst picking and choosing so many antiques and bits and bobs for the wedding, one colour scheme would of been limiting. As for DIY projects, they were endless! Our whole wedding was handmade! My best girlfriend made every single napkin for the place settings while my mother made the burlap table cloths, my stepfather made our signs, my brother did our chalkboard art, James and a friend made our altar doors – it truly was months and months of thrifting through stores and markets and creating the wedding we envisioned through help of great family and friends.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Take time out to breathe, relax and reflect on your own. Planning a wedding of any size can be a huge task, and this for me was one of the most crucial things to remember to do for myself. Just spending time getting a coffee and reading a magazine was the best therapy to keeping sane and loving the planning process as much as I did.

From the photographer, Loren: Caitlin spent many months sourcing rustic furniture and the like to complete her rustic dream wedding to her love, James. They discovered a delightful old barn in the heart of our dairy country that had been lovingly preserved with many interesting nooks and crannies to explore. Caitlin is a creative soul who knew what she wanted from the start. The floral vendor is a dear friend of hers to whom she allowed to create to her own hearts content. Her sister hand-stitched ‘and they lived happily ever after’ into a panel inside her dress. So sweet.

Australian Countryside Wedding

Garden Weddings

Today’s wedding has us absolutely tittering with excitement. It proves that a grand budget is by no means necessary for a drop-dead gorgeous, down-home celebration. The bride recruited her family and friends for an abundance of DIY projects, from bunting to flowers to the most adorable but simple wedding favor — grapes of every color in little brown bags! Every moment was delicately captured by the always superb Anna Rose Photography.

From the bride, Tiffany: Paul and I wanted our wedding to have an intimate, personal feel as well as being bright and casual. I would describe our wedding as happy, colourful, fun… with a bit of a country, garden fete feel. I didn’t want it to look too coordinated or formal so we steered clear of any particular colour scheme or theme.

We were on a very small budget but thankfully we both have incredibly talented, resourceful families and friends. Our whole wedding was pretty much DIY so there are too many projects to mention… a couple of the big stand-outs were the bunting, flowers, favours and cushions.

My Mum is a superstar at sourcing cheap fabric. For our bunting; she collected various pastel designs which my Aunty Trish, Mum, friend Pip and I all cut into triangles (30cm sides) with “zig-zag” scissors. This prevented fraying and meant we didn’t have to hem the sides. Mum then sewed 90m of triangles onto bias binding. You’re awesome Mum!

My sister planted 80 flower seedlings three months before the wedding. The day before, we transferred them into little aluminium pots from Ikea and scattered them around the garden for some extra colour.

For our favours, we bought small brown paper bags from ebay, stamped the front of the bags with a black “thank you” stamp (from etsy) and trimmed the tops with zig-zag scissors. We then lined them with clear plastic bags and filled with summer fruits. They were a big hit at the end of the night.

To create seating areas, we scattered throw rugs and cushions around the garden and over a low limestone wall. The cushions were made by a family friend using pastel coloured fabrics and buttons. The throw rugs were borrowed or from Ikea.

Budget Chic Australian Wedding

Real Weddings

Photos by:

The next wedding up today is another Australian gem by Anna Rose Photography! Erin and Jake’s wedding in Perth, Australia. This wedding is a perfect example of how to make the most of your budget, and get an expensive look with a limited amount of cash. I mean, just look at Erin’s dress! It’s glitzy, gorgeous, all around amazing, and cost under $1,000! Yes, you heard me correctly. Under $1K!! The epitome of chic on a budget.

From the bride, Erin:
Our wedding was quite large for an Australian wedding, with 135 guests. We got engaged on our 10th anniversary, and married a week before our 11th anniversary. We were married in the gardens at the University of Western Australia, where I am doing my PhD in history. The spot where we got married is where I use to do all my uni homework and readings. Our reception was at a local restaurant that my husband Jake and I go to a lot. We’ve been going to the restaurant since it opened, and loved the idea of supporting local family businesses.

I recommend using local companies, and getting friends and family involved. Our celebrant was my mum’s friend, a friend acted as our MC, another friend organized the music playlist (we had our first dance to the Twin Peaks theme song), and a friend’s brother and sister played violins at the ceremony.

Australian wedding on a budget

Try looking for a wedding dress outside the traditional bridal stores. My dress was an evening dress, not a wedding dress, so was quite a bit cheaper, costing me $AU650.

I actually had to have two wedding dresses! It wasn’t funny at the time, but my first dress was taken up by a local seamstress, and was totally butchered. I only got it back a week before the wedding, and it was 15cm to short (in bare feet!), with a jagged hem, and the bodice had been altered beyond belief. I tried to find another copy of the same dress, but was struggling. I eventually found another copy of the same dress, and got it altered in two days.

Although it was quite stressful, I eventually got the wear the dress I loved, and it made me realize that the most important thing in the person you are marrying, not the dress/flowers/shoes.

I really recommend having a cocktail style reception. We had a lot of guests who came from overseas, so they loved the chance to move around and catch up with people, rather than being stuck at a table. Plus, it was a lot less expensive.

We set up a photo-booth using my camera, Mac Book, and a handheld remote. We set it up against a turquoise feature wall at the restaurant, and the photos looked great. It was really easy to set up – Jake did it on the way to the wedding ceremony. However, the remote eventually ran out of battery (at 11.30pm), so it might be an idea to have a back up remote and camera battery on hand. We also had two Fujifilm Instax cameras, which were a huge hit. We are going to put the photos from the booth, and scanned copies of the Fujifilm Instax instant photos, on a website for our guests to download and print.

My advice to brides would be to include their partners in the planning the wedding. It seems that a lot of grooms get left out of the planning, and it can be fun to share it, as well as more relaxing not having to do everything yourself.

Helena + Richard’s Intimate Wedding

Beach Weddings

Photos by:

We don’t have one, but two beautiful intimate weddings to share with you today! First up is Helena and Richard’s beach wedding in Fremantle, Australia. Helena wore a simple white cocktail dress with a belt and birdcage veil, and orange shoes to match the wedding colors. Now that’s a beach bridal look I love! Shot by Anna Rose Photography.

From the bride, Helena:
We wanted our wedding day to be a charming and quiet affair with close friends and family. We picked a rustic limestone building, the Kidogo Arthouse Gallery to have our wedding ceremony and lunch reception. It’s perched right on the cliff, overlooking the ocean. We went with orange crush and blue for our summer wedding because it reminded us of some of our favourite ‘summer’ things like coral flowers, fresh salmon and an ocean sunset.

We chose a surf and turf buffet lunch, and instead of a wedding cake, we asked our guests to bring a homemade dessert to help sweeten our day. We tried to incorporate as many handmade elements as possible by making our wedding invites, sewing the table runners and doing all the decorations ourselves. To make the summer day fun, we gave away orange paper fans and blue bubble bottles to our guests.

Richard’s best men were his two brothers while my bridesmaids were two of my closest girlfriends who flew over from Malaysia. I remembered telling them to pack along an orange dress! Much to my delight, some of the guests also came in dashes of orange and blue.

If I had to pass on any advice to brides planning their own handmade wedding, it would be to remain calm and steadfast with your budget. We were very clear from the start on what we could afford to spend. We didn’t bother with chair covers, satin ribbons, flower petals or limousines.

The tea pouring ceremony was a nice experience for everyone. I think our friends enjoyed that immensely because it was something different for them. It also meant a lot to Richard and me that we were able to share my Chinese culture with the rest of his family and friends.

I think what made our wedding work was keeping it minimal and simple and picking a charming location. We didn’t need to do too much decorating and when we did add all the small touches, it created a nice memorable impression.

I can’t say enough praises about our photographer, Jen Regan. She really just captured everything as natural as possible. The orange door and blue walls were a pleasant surprise because we stumbled upon it while wandering around the beach. I remembered being so excited and giddy like I had won a big prize (other than a husband), it must have been fate!
