Crimson Milwaukee Wedding

Looking over these images sent over by Anna Page Photography, it’s easy to see where our eyes were first drawn to: that amazing crimson accordion pinwheel backdrop. It’s no surprise that the bride and groom are graphic designers, given that they had their hands in all the day’s DIY details. We’re also pretty fond of the silhouette cake toppers, featuring famous pairings and couples from pop culture.

From the bride, Megan: The pinwheels and all other decorations were made by JP and me, my sisters, and my closest friend Sarah. As graphic designers we love the tactile nature of paper and made all of our decorations aside from the flowers out of it. The cake toppers were an idea I had that JP perfected. JP made 20 cake toppers of different famous couples.

Our wedding was sentimental and joyous. Our wedding color scheme was various shades and hues of red. Our DIY projects included:
-We made tons of red pinwheels that decorated the chairs at the reception and made a huge focal wall behind the bridal parties table.
-We made our invitations, save the dates and programs.
-We sewed a booklet for each guest that served as the place card. Inside each booklet we wrote a message to the guest. We knew we wouldn’t get to talk to everyone during the day so we wanted to write them each a note thanking them.
-Jp made all the cake toppers!
-I made my garter

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Pick one thing you are going to splurge on that means the most to you and one thing you are going to let go and live without. For Jp and me, having wonderful photography to look at after our wedding was a must so we splurged on photography. While I love cake we decided that the cakes didn’t really matter to us in the grand scheme of things. This really helped us gain some perspective that everything in the planning process is not equally important and somethings you can live without.

Paper Protea DIY Tutorial

Remember this stunning gorgeous photoshoot shot by Ashley Forrette from a couple weeks ago? The crafter behind those amazing paper proteas place cards, Rachel Coddington of the Etsy shop Sunny and Stumpy, is back to share with us a tutorial on how to make them yourself. Thank you for sharing!

From Rachel: Using the PDF template, cut out all of your pieces. The smallest circle petal will be your “leaf,” and the columns will be your “center”. Choose whichever colors you want for those particular petals (I like the inside to be light and the leaf to be green, personally!). If you don’t want to cut them out, you can always buy them pre-cut from my shop.

Start in the center. Glue the edge carefully so that there is still equal space between each petal. (I use PVA, but regular glue can work fine).

Glue a small spot on each petal. Overlap the petals and hold until secure.

With an open pair of scissors, curl each of the remaining petals. Your circle petals will need to be pressed into your hand so that they curl upwards and don’t stick straight up when you glue them to the base.

Take the tallest set of petals and glue them to the center.

Take the medium and smallest set of petals, offset them from the first set, and glue them to the center as well.

This is the trickiest part- apply a small line of glue to the circular part of the flower. This will hold fine once it dries. You can apply it to the base circle petal if you prefer.

Once that part is glued, you can put on the finishing touch- the leaf! You may need to shape the petals a bit with your hand so they don’t just lie flat- you want them to curl up to meet the other petals.

You’re done! You can play with the petals at this point to have them stick out or stay close to the center.

DIY Paper Doily Envelopes

Next up is Hellen’s paper doily envelopes. She created outer envelopes, I might add, to match the whimsy of her wedding invitations. The vellum reinforcing the underside of the doilies makes these darlings looks luxe. Love.

What you’ll need:
- 9 inch square doilies
- Vellum/tracing paper
- Craft Adhesive Spray
- Art Card
- Cutter
- Double-sided tape
- Cutting mat
- Ruler

Instructions:
Step 1: Create a template for the tracing paper/vellum. I used my old drawing block as the template. After a few attempts to get the right template, I am satisfied with my crisp looking template!

Step 2: Trace the template into the tracing paper and use cutter to cut it. But for the folded side in the middle, use the blunt edge of the cutter to give a folding mark.

Step 3: Spray the tracing paper with the Adhesive Spray. Don’t forget to put newspaper to cover the surrounding area. Leave it for 15 seconds. Carefully stick it to the doilies, make sure it fits perfectly.

Step 4: Fold the doilies to follow the tracing paper’s structure. Secure the inside of the envelope with double-sided tape. Voila! Beautifully hand-crafted envelope.

Paper Backdrops + Happy Weekend

Loving all the paper backdrops I’ve been seeing lately. These two caught my eye this week: one in a ceremony, and the other for a reception venue. Kayla and Newton, above, folded 1000 paper cranes and hung them on their ceremony altar as their backdrop, which contrasted with a dark curtain. Shot by Altmix Photography. Roaring 1920s Wedding Suite

Megan from MaeMae Paperie recently sent over this beautiful 1920s inspired wedding suite and just had to gush over how fabulous the entire design is. The colors are just right and the logo of the couple on many of the pieces is so sweet. I’m especially loving that Save-the-Date card, the illustration reminds me of poichoir stenciling typical from the 1920s.
