Jackson Pollock Inspired Wedding Editorial

Wedding Design

There’s nothing that says “modern” quite like a Jackson Pollock painting. The artist’s drip-style of painting is quite well-known and with the surge of modern wedding trends, we knew this Pollock-style splatter look would make its way in! Mikkel Paige Photography captured the lovely images from this Pollock-inspired wedding shoot and they are brilliant. With a team of vendors like Color Pop Events and Blade Floral and Event Designs, it’s no wonder this wedding editorial turned into a funky and fun minimalist playground!

From the photographer, Mikkel Paige Photography: Dobbin St is the hottest new venue in New York City, located in a very trendy area of Brooklyn on in Williamsburg. Wanting to be amongst the first vendors and “wedding” in the space that opened just two months ago, this very talented team of popular NYC vendors came together to create this Jackson Pollock inspired, vibrant inspirational shoot.

The color palette was chosen to play off the already amazing curated art and colors in the venue: black and white with pops of yellow, mauve, green and blue (“Yves Klein blue” particularly on the front exterior statement wall, a color first mixed by this famous artist around 1960.) Everything in the shoot played off those colors, with an addition of Pollock-like splatter paint throughout particularly on the dinner plates, cake and guest book paper. Two other well known artists are highlighted at the venue including Christine Gedeon who created the mural on the back wall out of tape, inspired by an aerial view and side view of the Manhattan/Brooklyn landscape as seen from the venue’s rooftop, and custom wallpaper by Brooklyn native Sarah Merenda. A blue sequin tablecloth, pink boutonnieres and bouquets, an incredible stationery suite custom designed for the shoot by Bliss and Bone, and a stunning Hayley Paige gown all contribute to this absolutely outstanding wedding shoot.

Modern New York Wedding at 501 Union

Romantic Weddings

Today, we’re serving up another stunner and this time, we’re heading to New York to feature this modern and sophisticated beaut, all documented by Koman Photography. It’s got heaps of traditional wedding elements like breathtaking bouquets by Edelweiss Floral Atelier that you couldn’t even imagine and on-point sartorial choices by a trendy wedding party, but 501 Union‘s vintage look adds in a dash of elegance to this wedding.

From the bride, Joohee: Pablo and I both knew we wanted to keep our wedding close to our home, friends, and family in New York City. After some brief web surfing, I came across 501 Union in Brooklyn, and immediately upon viewing pictures, I knew in my heart that this was the perfect place for us. A week later, we signed for the venue at first sight. Having a background in art, in my eyes, the modern feel of the venue, the black and white walls, and the chic art deco wallpapers provided the ultimate canvas to host any type of wedding. We set our date for late September, and while fall in New York is beautiful, our summers seemingly feel shorter every year. Trying to extend summer a little longer, we decided on a romantic theme with pink and metallic colors, dreamy tulle, and plenty of pink flowers to lighten up and contrast the venue. The weather on our wedding day ended up amazing, so it actually felt like a perfect summer day.

My family owns a bakery called the Runcible Spoon Bakery, and after receiving a degree in art, I decided to take my artistic talents and apply them to the family business. Over the years, while learning to manage the business and to bake, I also taught myself how to decorate cakes. It quickly became obvious that I would make my own wedding cake. Eventually, I also decided to cater all of the desserts for our wedding by creating an entire dessert bar. I must admit, baking hundreds of macarons, cake pops, and hand decorated cookies, on top of making a wedding cake and planning a wedding, was truly a labor of love.

Our entire day was magical – everything went exactly the way we had envisioned and hoped for the year leading up to it. The saddest part of the day was when it was all over. All of the planning, stressing, and, in my case, baking was so worth it in the end. After the day just flew by and our guests were leaving, I remember turning to Pablo and saying, “Aw – let’s do that again.” It was a good thing we planned an after party! When it came to picking vendors, we were blessed to have found a team with a creative vision that we could place all our trust in to capture our day. Pablo and I still constantly find ourselves looking through our wedding photos, because even though the day has gone, those pictures and video still live on and remind us of the best day of our lives – the end of our beginning.

Central Park Cherry Blossom Bridal Shoot

Wedding Design

Cherry blossoms have always been such wonderful blooms to look at. Being around only during certain times of the year adds to their darling appeal. When you live in a location that has clusters upon clusters of them during the warm months, it’s a must to get a bridal inspiration shoot together and that’s exactly what Brklyn View Photography did, luckily for us! Jainé enlisted the help of Wild Floral Designs and they headed out to Central Park to spend a day under the cherry blossom trees. They wanted to enhance the soft pink blooms, so a pink jewel toned color palette for the floral arrangements were chosen, along with very elegant gowns with embroidery that mimicked the surroundings. We’re just soaking up the loveliness of this whole shoot!

From the photographer, Jainé of Brklyn View Photography: I’m delighted to share our pink inspired Cherry Blossom bridal inspiration shoot. This was photographed in NYC Central Park at the peak of the cherry blossoms – so pretty! We were inspired by pops of pink and bright berry colors with our floral design. Our bride had two outfit changes but we used the same dress and just swapped out the top/skirt with delicate separates to achieve two different looks.

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

She Got Scooped Up Bridal Shower

Wedding Design

No doubt about it, this bridal shower shoot is one of the most adorable shoots we’ve come across. Not only is it centered around ice cream (yum!), but the slogan “She Got Scooped Up” is creativity at its finest. Brklyn View Photography took the photos and snapped up all kind of saccharine goodness, literally and figuratively. Color Pop Events was the brainchild for the shoot and naturally, it was a delightful explosion of pastels. Erin Braun brought her expertise along and pulled together feminine floral centerpieces with soft pinks and dashes of lilac and white. If you’re on the hunt for a creative idea for a bridal party, this is it!

ice cream bridal party - photo by Brklyn View Photography http://ruffledblog.com/she-got-scooped-up-wedding-inspiration

From the event designer, Leah of Color Pop Events: The inspiration for this shoot presented itself over a year ago when Jackie of Sincerely, Jackie and I were prop shopping for a shoot she was doing at the time. We happened upon a shelf of vintage ice cream sundae glasses in an array of pastel colors, and we both immediately thought, we HAVE to do an ice cream theme styled shoot with sweetly fun, feminine details! Naturally, busy season arrived and the shoot idea was put on the back burner.

Buckle in, because we’re about to share the wedding of event and floral designer extraordinaire Juli Vaughn of Juli Vaughn Designs. With some planning expertise from Leah of Color Pop Events and the help of some of New York’s finest vendors, the wedding turned into a “color-filled, festive, whimsical event” in the bride’s own words. Thank you to Haley Sheffield for taking these wonderful images!

Bright + Modern NYC Wedding - photo by Haley Sheffield Photography event and floral design by Juli Vaughn Designs http://ruffledblog.com/bright-modern-NYC-wedding

From the bride, Juli: When Josh and I started planning our wedding, the first thing we realized was that we wanted all of our dearest friends present and involved and made to feel like our wedding was the most fun they’d ever had. It was the driving force in all of our details and all of our festivities. Because it was the second wedding for both of us, we chose to solely invite friends instead of family. We planned a weekend of events – Friday night tacos and karaoke instead of a rehearsal, morning yoga the day of the wedding to calm nerves and start the day off right, a double decker bus tour of NYC for the cocktail hour, and a pajama brunch at the hotel the day after the wedding.

This is the most darling wedding inspiration yet, and we think it has something to do with all of the beautiful embroidery and handmade details strewn all over the chic New York City venue. It adds such a fun vintage touch and let’s talk about these color palettes! What an explosion of detail (I’m looking at you, reception tables) and I just love how all of these eclectic colors come together so well. Playful weddings like this are always so fun to fangirl over!

Stylish Manhattan Wedding on a Rooftop

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Amber Gress

With a bright white room like 620 Loft and Garden as your backdrop, the possibilities are endless for your wedding. That’s exactly what Mary Alex and Keith dreamed up when they decided do say their I Do’s in Manhattan. Photographed by the talented Amber Gress, the duo kept their decor to sleek and simple modernity with some rustic elements tied in. Like those beautiful box planters brimming with ivory hydrangeas with succulents and pink rose buds nestled in or those butterfly escort cards. So sweet!

stylish Manhattan wedding - photo by Amber Gress Photography http://ruffledblog.com/stylish-manhattan-wedding

From the photographer, Amber Gress: Keith and Mary Alex live in Georgia, but knew they wanted to have a NYC wedding. Mary Alex is originally from Georgia, while Keith is from NYC, so they share a love of the big apple. They couldn’t have picked a more classically NYC venue than 620 Loft and Garden, right in the heart of it all. We made sure to make time for us to shoot at multiple locations, so we could capture an overview of them in the city. As you can see they are a gorgeous and super stylish couple, and we’re so excited to share this with you!

Stylish Williamsburg Wedding

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Pat Furey

If ever there was a couple that exuded style from every pore, it’s today’s couple in this wedding from Pat Furey. The groom’s blue suit is sharp to a T, the bride’s bouquet by Fox Fodder Farm tied with an Hermès scarf is all kinds of chic, and her silk gown by Johanna Johnson is completely irresistible. Color us smitten.

stylish Williamsburg wedding - photo by Pat Furey http://ruffledblog.com/stylish-williamsburg-wedding

From the bride, Jackie: Mike and I both agreed we wanted a wedding that felt intimate, that felt very New York, that felt very relaxed, that was full of good food; we wanted to share an intimate moment with our nearest and dearest… and then let loose and really celebrate. We live in the East Village and just across the bridge in BK was the Wythe Hotel. They fit the bill with their gorgeous indoor/outdoor space complete with foliage, exposed brick, a huge beautiful bar and oodles of built in ambiance. Fall seemed perfect – golden leaves, a chill in the air and a dream of donning a leather jacket with my wedding dress. What we got was green leaves, unseasonably warm weather and a torrential downpour to tell the grandkids about. We couldn’t help but laugh about the ridiculousness of it all.

A theme isn’t really our thing. Colors on the other hand… Jewel tones are my jam. I love love love raspberry, maroon and deep pinks. Pair that with deep greens, shades of cream, off white, ecru and accents of gold and I am in absolute heaven. That being said, the color scheme really only pertained to our flowers and the place cards. Everyone has their own style and we wanted them to be able to wear what they wanted, what they felt good in.

I can’t remember the root of it, but I wanted dip dye place cards. Some places said beet juice, others said grape juice, some said cranberry juice. Don’t be fooled, when it comes down to dying thick card stock, you need dye. I bought two shades of RIT and got down to business. It was time consuming to say the least, but I loved the way they turned out. Mike hand wrote the names of each guest. Table Numbers: This might be a little offbeat for a wedding but we have a thing with skulls. Tattoos, ceramic skulls from Mexico, hand drawn ones, decoupage plates from John Derian – you name it, we have them. I wanted to subtly incorporate that into the wedding. We hand stamped a skeleton couple holding hands with a heart in between them on the envelope on our Save the Dates. Our invites had hand stamped and embossed skeleton couples dressed to the nines on the envelope. Our table cards each had a hand drawn skull courtesy of Mike. We were going to keep them all and frame them, but a few went mysteriously missing. =) I wanted signs but couldn’t figure out the best way to do it. We enlisted a very talented friend with some serious X-acto knife skills who cut each letter out by hand and and glued them onto printed paper. Some of them were even strung together into a tiny banner for our card basket. Bless her and her crafty skills.

Old Charm New York Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

There’s a lot to love about today’s styled shoot from Julia Elizabeth Photography, Polka Dot Events, and Rose Red and Lavender, but at the top of the list is how very “New York” the whole thing feels. Architectural elements, a chic nearly monochrome color palette, and a super stylish couple bright everything together for a shoot that encapsulates the best of both old and new New York.

old charm New York wedding inspiration - photo by Julia Elizabeth Photography http://ruffledblog.com/old-charm-new-york-wedding-inspiration

From Julia Elizabeth Photography: When Tracey Goldstein of Polka Dot Events and I first started discussing the feel for our shoot, we touched upon a growing trend with her clients requesting a wedding design that is inherently New York City without being too theme-y or outdated. Once we visited 190 North, a newly opened Williamsburg, Brooklyn venue with its modern Brooklyn architecture mixed with vintage New York accents, our vision of combining old and new came to life, hence the name “Old Charm, New York.”

We gathered some of our favorite NYC vendors and gave them a little background on our “couple”: Late 20s to early 30-something modern Brooklynites, throwing an intimate winter wedding at 190 North. They love how the space’s soft color palette and wainscoting plays off the industrial garage door windows and brick accent walls, and want to highlight these features with minimalist floral and décor that is both sophisticated and understated. Their color palette is dusty blue, gray, white with accents of gold and natural greenery. Then we let all the vendors do their thing! Park Slope’s Lion in the Sun custom designed the stationery suite with a Brooklyn map overlay sitting atop a simple cardstock designed with a nod to 190 North’s geometric door patterns and mix of modern and traditional fonts. The monogram was designed by Allison Steinfeld and the black envelopes were graced with white hand calligraphy by Laurel Hansen.

Stylist Allison Koehler dressed the bride in two Limor Rosen gowns that brought our her modern day edge while still holding onto a classic bridal look. First a romantic low back dress with a long lace train for the ceremony, followed by a playful beaded silk gown for the reception. Her hair and makeup was styled natural and soft by Stacey and Gabby of Once Upon a Bride and all the jewelry and rings were supplied by Mociun in Williamsburg. Not to be outdone, the groom wore a midnight blue tuxedo from The Black Tux. Our florist Rose, Red and Lavender created an asymmetrical sculptural backdrop for the ceremony made from greenery and gold leaf accents. The same look was carried into the bride’s simple posy bouquet, and combined with white flora and succulents. Post-ceremony, we took photographs in front of the classic 1969 Checker Taxicab from FilmCars and amongst the beautifully refurbished vintage chairs by Jessica Allyn.

Our vision for the tablescape was simple yet edgy. We selected metal frame barn tables and gunmetal tolix chairs from Broadway Party Rentals, and we dressed them with a dusty blue satin runner, black and white coup china, crystal stemware and a mix of ultra-modern and ornate gold flatware. For the tablescape we used geometric gold candleholders and simple white roses in bud vases from RRL. Dish Food & Events created the gorgeous (and delicious) charcuterie spread. And what’s a wedding without a yummy dessert bar? Our adorable simple cake designed by Luckybird Bakes was the perfect compliment to the incredible dessert corner by Erin Emmett of Sweet Pistachio. We’re so proud of all the talented New York City vendors we were able to bring together to create such a sought after look. Thank you for helping us bring the vision to life!

Photos by:

You all know by now we’re big fans of The Big Fake Wedding, and the list of reasons is long. For starters, they reinvented what a bridal event should be. The Big Fake Wedding is just that: a faux wedding complete with vow renewal ceremony by a real couple and reception, where participating vendors get to collaborate as if it was the real deal. Attendees witness local professionals in action and have the opportunity to meet them in person. If you’re a talented vendor and looking to participate, we have the lowdown on upcoming events where you can apply:

Brooklyn Meets Nashville Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

A bride with pink hair, three different wedding dresses, leather jackets, studded heels — how much more do I need to say? This modern and chic styled shoot from Khaki Bedford Photography and Yellow Rose Co. captures the best that Brooklyn hip and Nashville cool have to offer, and it’s the absolute perfect inspiration for any rock-n-roll couple looking to get their party on.

Brooklyn meets Nashville wedding inspiration - photo by Khaki Bedford Photography http://ruffledblog.com/brooklyn-meets-nashville-wedding-inspiration

From the photographer, Khaki Bedford: My inspiration for this shoot came for what I felt was lacking in the Southern Wedding scene. Recently moving to Nashville from Brooklyn (along with so many creative peers), I really wanted the shoot to feel Brooklyn-meets-Nashville by bringing some non-traditional cool to the shoot and having more of an urban feel. This really describes my Brooklyn client and what I think young Nashville couples are craving here. The one thing I knew I had to have was a bride with pastel hair – I was dying to find a model with a rock n roll, fun style, with a little boho feel – non-traditional, a little edgy, but still soft and pretty. I also wanted to include as many local vendors as I could.

Olive and Sinclair is a Nashville staple and I thought it would be perfect to include their artisan chocolate bars as wedding favors. Belle Meade Bourbon was also used as our “favors” which was fitting since we shot in the events space at the distillery. Our hair stylist has a pretty amazing taxidermy collection, so the morning of the shoot I snagged as much as I could as a last minute addition (including a 5′ deer head)! She also let me raid her closet and contributed much of her personal wardrobe – including a fur coat previously owned by June Carter Cash. Kristin, from Yellow Rose Co. really got my vision from the get-go and was an integral part in making this whole shoot happen. She came in full force contributing her floral and styling talents and linking us up with the rentals company, amazing cake shop – Nashville Sweets and Sweet as Honey Studios for the paper goods. The Dress Theory was so amazing to work with and had so many gorgeous dresses to choose from, they ended up loaning us three for the shoot!

Art Deco Inspired Brooklyn Wedding

Vintage Weddings

You know those times when you see a shot of a couple and you’re just thinking “yeah… this is going to be a good wedding”? We definitely pulled one of those when we saw Chelsea and Alex on their wedding day captured by Pat Furey. This couple has the most amazing style, and their Old Hollywood-meets-modern Art Deco inspiration has us knowing we’ll be in love with this day for years to come.

Art Deco inspired Brooklyn wedding - photo by Pat Furey http://ruffledblog.com/art-deco-inspired-brooklyn-wedding

From the bride, Chelsea: My husband and I grew up in traditional Italian families and knew, from experience, we did not want a large, traditional banquet hall wedding. In fact, it was important to the both of us that our wedding be small and intimate as we felt that celebrations like a wedding can become more about the impressiveness of the party rather than the celebration of love. We did not want the typical wedding; we were not terribly preoccupied with everything being perfect, serious, and traditional (however we wanted to respect some traditions). Most of all, we wanted our wedding to be fun; an epic celebration of our love that included all the people in our lives who made us who we are. A lot of emphasis was put on the food and music (as that’s usually what we remember about weddings), as well as the photography and videography as that was how we were going to remember the event. I preferred an Old Hollywood or Art Deco vibe for the wedding, but rather than a “themed” wedding I wanted to capture the vibe of those eras while updating the details to reflect more modern sensibilities. I had originally envisioned a party of similar style to that which closed out the film “Meet Joe Black”, but found that no venue in our area (North Jersey, NYC) matched that look. In the end, 501 Union in Brooklyn, NY – while not waterside or secluded – truly captured the Art Deco style and atypical vibe my husband and I craved for.

There was no real color scheme; we tried to play off of the colors of the venue (black, navy, silver, gold, white). My husband wore a cobalt suit, styled as a tuxedo while his groomsmen complimented him with navy suits. My bridesmaids wore blush dresses with gunmetal sequins, thus capturing the glitz of the era (and the vague sparkle in my wedding dress, as well as the gold votives & vases). The flowers were styled in deep purples, rich greens and jewel tones to compliment the venue and bridal party. There were a couple DIY projects involved: seating chart, invitations, and table numbers. My mother and I found a vintage gold frame and used it to frame a grey mirror that we used as our seating chart. We wrote the table numbers and guests in gold pen and displayed the chart on a tall gold easel. For our invitations, my maid of honor (a graphic designer) and I worked on and prepared the design ourselves and then provided the files to a local print shop that printed them out for us. Finally, my mother and I purchased wooden table numbers in Gatsby-like font, assembled the numbers, and spray painted them with gold paint. Additionally, my mother and I used an old bird cage she had displayed in our home that we used for cards and well-wishes. To match the colors of the venue and the table details (votives, vases), we painted the birdcage gold and black.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Plan as much as you can as early as you can. It allows you to actually enjoy this time and not worry about the details. Also, make sure you both are actively involved in the planning process; it can be a great bonding experience. Decide what is important to each of you and be willing to compromise on the rest so you both get what you want out of your special day. Once you’ve gotten everything in order, let go. You cannot control the weather, the vendors, or other people, but you can control how you react to the day. This is a once in a lifetime event, just sit back and enjoy your new spouse, family, and friends. Above all, take time to simply enjoy the day and allow the moment to sink in. The day goes by so incredibly fast that you’ll think it was all a fever dream. Enjoy every single second of the planning process, bachelor/bachelorette parties, bridal shower, and wedding day. It’s an amazing experience and you should be more focused on how beautiful it all is rather than the details and execution of the party.

Don’t miss the film from Kiss the Bride Films:

Wedding Music:
Processional: “Codex,” Radiohead
Recessional: “For Once In My Life,” Stevie Wonder
Reception Entrance: “I Saw the Light,” Todd Rundgren (That song is special to us as my husband is a huge fan of Todd Rundgren, that song was a favorite of mine, but neither of us knew either of those details until he played the song one day in a car ride and we both starting singing and dancing quite excitedly to it. It added further proof to the both of us that we were meant for each other and served as a nice early bonding experience.)
First Dance: “All the Things You Are,” Ella Fitzgerald
Father/Daughter Dance: “Isn’t She Lovely,” Stevie Wonder
Mother/Son Dance: “The Man You’ve Become,” Molly Pasutti
A lot of jazz, oldies, and adult alternative (think Zero 7 or The xx) played during our cocktail hour. For the reception, we had a lot of 70s and 80s dance music (especially Yaz(oo), Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder), 40s and 50s love songs (Sunday Kind of Love, I’ll Be Seeing You – Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday), as well as today’s hits (The Weeknd, etc.) and some 90s favorites (Spice Girls).

Vintage Wedding at Gramercy Park Hotel

Vintage Weddings

All you vintage-loving brides out there, listen up. This wedding (from the incomparable team of Lev Kuperman and Violet and Verde) is where it’s at. Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City was the absolute perfect venue to complement the couple’s vision, and these high school sweethearts ended up with a wedding for the ages!

vintage wedding at Gramercy Park Hotel - photo by Lev Kuperman http://ruffledblog.com/vintage-wedding-at-gramercy-park-hotel

From the florist, Bridget of Violet and Verde: Melanie was an absolute dream to work with. She was, by far, the most upbeat, sweet, and happy bride and with Mitchell, having been a couple since high school, they were just perfect together and complemented each other so well. They had a clear vision from our first meeting of what they wanted for florals – shades of pinks, reds, and whites without looking too holiday and using a more vintage aesthetic to complement the beautiful venue.

We chose anemones, peonies, ranunculus, roses, paper whites, cosmos and sweet peas to fill the bouquets and tables. Brass lanterns, mercury glass vases, and vintage votives and bottles lined the tables with more flowers placed throughout the tables. Each place setting was adorned with a single colorful bloom for guests. Lush vines and foliage paired with assorted lanterns created a romantic backdrop to their rooftop ceremony. It was truly a beautiful day for such a wonderful couple!

NYC Brunch Garden Wedding

Garden Weddings

It’s hard to beat getting ready at The Wythe Hotel, celebrating with friends and family while enjoying a delicious brunch, and an after-party at a bowling alley, and that’s the exact day that was in store for Angie and Domingo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Redfield Photography captured the whole day and Sprout Home did excellent work as always with the floral design!

From the bride, Angie: The overarching theme of our engagement & wedding was “The Perfect Recipe.” We love to cook and love good food and in the end wanted that to be reflected by our small personal touches. Domingo and I are big fans of cooking and eating, delicious food. He makes breakfast every morning (which he continued to vow to do!) and I try my best to make dinner at night. Because of this, we wanted our wedding to reflect this love that we have for all things food. Additionally, we’re really early risers (he proposed at 8:16am over breakfast and when I sent out the announcement texts the majority of our friends responded with “LET US SLEEP!” and “WHY SOO EARLY??” instead of the expected “CONGRATULATIONS!”), so we knew we wanted a day wedding. We wanted to be able to take advantage of the day and the sun, and do as much as possible.

Funny thing, I had asked my husband-to-be at the time, on a whim, that if he could select one thing about our wedding, what would it be…without a second thought; he announced that he would want the wedding to take place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He had lived in Williamsburg while he was in college and loved it. Had a real soft spot for the neighborhood. It wasn’t too hard to convince me as Williamsburg has awesome eateries. So, despite NOT living in Williamsburg, we took ourselves to Brooklyn. Now that we had a general location and theme, it made searching for a venue a bit easier – our options were narrowed down. We had agreed that we wanted something that felt intimate. After a bit of research, we stumbled upon Aurora Ristorante. We already knew we wanted a day wedding and reception, however…we figured it would be easier to checkout the venue in the evening during the week. One evening, we decide to go scope it out and when we walked in, we were completely disillusioned… not because the space isn’t beautiful, IT IS, it was just too dark for what I wanted, and I was sad. But Domingo convinced me to give it another shot and go during the day. We did just that! The following week, we took another visit to Williamsburg to have brunch at Aurora and COMPLETELY LOVED IT! As in floored by the greenery, the space, the rustic-ness and the food was amazing! It obviously all worked out in the end but goes to show you how visiting a venue during the envisioned time of day, really plays a big part in making the decision.

We got married May 23 and Domingo’s birthday was May 19. While the wedding itself was amazing and we were on cloud nine, I have to admit that the best part of the day for me was surprising my husband with a birthday cake at Brooklyn Bowl (at the after party). We were both so consumed with all things wedding, he thought I had either opted to celebrate his birthday by, well, marrying him, OR that it just wasn’t worth making a big deal of it (his 30th), because he was getting married! In either case, he was completely blown away and genuinely surprised that I had arranged the delivery of his favorite cake and that we acknowledged his birthday. It was the best feeling in the world, because he’s always surprising me and I was really happy to be able to do the same for him (for once)! While in the end, we were extremely happy with the results; so much sweat and time went into creating the personal touches throughout the event. I did everything from the ceremony backdrop to the burned initials on the wooden spoons, with Domingo’s company on tow (he tried to help and failed – he’s a charmer, not creative). We got to spend some serious time together while I completed these tasks.

Friendsgiving Inspired Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Jonica Moore

It’s the week of Thanksgiving, which means we’ve got lots of delicious tablescapes to look forward to. This shoot from Jonica Moore, Dawn Mauberret, and Sweet Thorn Flora explores the dramatic side of autumn weddings, and we think it works perfectly for a Friendsgiving event with the besties too. Be sure to keep an eye out for the incredible dip dyed veil!

Friendsgiving inspired wedding ideas - photo by Jonica Moore http://ruffledblog.com/friendsgiving-inspired-wedding-ideas

From the shoot’s concept designer, Kerry Ann Stokes: The Moody Romantics styled shoot was inspired by dark fairytales and the beauty of nature found deep in the woods – maybe where you least expect it. Both décor and wardrobe are rich in texture-including furs, satin-faced chiffon, lace, quartz, lush florals, and taxidermy insects. This shoot is packed with detail, a love for the handmade, and vintage items. Dreamt up by accessories designer Kerry Ann Stokes and brought to life by a team of creatives, mobilized by Dawn Mauberret Events. This shoot sets the mood for a dreamy and romantic fall wedding—all beautifully captured by Jonica Moore Studio.

The color palette is rich and dark hued-highlighting deep reds, and Pantone’s color of the year, Marsala. For the wedding dresses we pulled a Rue De Seine dress with a delicate lace over a beige slip and one of Leanne Marshall’s creamy and silky dresses from Lovely Bride. We paired the first look (Rue De Seine) with a deep wine dip-dyed silk tulle veil and dark beaded crown from Kerry Ann Stokes. Sophie Hughes provided some killer jewelry for the shoot, including a custom Black Beauty Diamond Ring (we were all wide-eyed over it), black diamond bands, and fused metal pieces. For the second look (Leanne Marshall) we topped the dress with a fur shawl and a natural quartz headpiece. The bridesmaids wore maroon (Ash and Light) and black (Nordstrom) dresses, along with coordinating jewelry, leather flower hairpins, a beaded headpiece. Hair (by Stephanie Kauffman) and makeup (by MauberretFX) have a beautiful witchy vibe. Sweet Thorn Flora nailed it with the floral arrangements, which included deep toned florals mixed with lush greens and blush accents. Peonies, blackberries, thistle, ranunculus, and ferns were utilized and mixed with taxidermy insects (courtesy of Hoardaculture) and antlers-definitely making a dramatic statement.

The Grand was the perfect location for this shoot, and included a long wooden banquet table, rustic seating, exposed brick walls, a deep green pin-tuck cushion booth, and some in house taxidermy wall mounts. They cooked up a menu full of color for every course. Oysters for the cocktail hour with some fall inspired signature cocktails, a black kale salad to start, and braised ribs for the main-all served up on vintage plates and glassware from Eleven Thirty Six. For the dessert we decided to forego the traditional cake and have a table of pies and tarts instead. Deep colored berries and elaborate crust designs made for a beautiful sweets table thanks to Cutie Pies NYC. The maroon and rose-colored invites were designed by Of Note Stationers — who also supplied some stationery (Can’t Do This Without You, Dazzle, and It’s Your Day cards). Our signage was all hand painted by Kristin Texteria onto vintage mirrors, including the one large mirror in the venue. The escort cards are strung from butterflies and pinned inside vintage frames. Needless to say, a lot of talented vendors came together on this moody and romantic wedding inspiration shoot and the end result is truly inspiring!

Dinner Party Wedding at Brooklyn Winery

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

M2 Photography

Taylor and Jake had a very simple vision for their wedding day: a delicious dinner with loved ones where everyone gets to dress up, dance, and eat cake. What could be more perfect than that? M2 Photography, Square Mile Events, and Designs by Ahn were all brought on board to help out on the big day, and they all worked wonders — though we have to give special credit to the incredible floral design that still has us reeling!

dinner party wedding at Brooklyn Winery - photo by M2 Photography http://ruffledblog.com/dinner-party-wedding-at-brooklyn-winery

From the bride, Taylor: We originally wanted to get married upstate somewhere outdoors, but the travel for our guests felt unnecessary. Jake’s family was flying in from Australia and we wanted our guests to be able to relax once they go to New York and to enjoy the city we love so much. Brooklyn Winery checked off all of our boxes. It was rustic and immediately personal. Every staff member was genuinely excited for us, they felt like an extension of the guests. We wanted to hit that sweet spot of making it comfortable and approachable for us but formal enough that it felt like a wedding. The flowers really made that difference! It was like a great dinner with great food and all your friends and family got to dress up. Our friend Francis Lombardi played original music and covers during the cocktail hour. We are friends from college so to have him play at our wedding and bring everyone together was really sentimental. Then we go to just kick it and dance and laugh and eat cake. It was perfect!

white and green bouquet - photo by M2 Photography http://ruffledblog.com/dinner-party-wedding-at-brooklyn-winery

Flower recipe: My bouquet was a mix of sweet pea, astilbe, lisianthus, tuberose, jasmine, passion vine and ranunculus, all in shades of white. The chuppah was made of birch and decorated in hydrangeas, lisianthus, passion vine, dahlia and green vines to coordinate with the winery. The table arrangements were a colorful mix of my bouquet plus dahlias, and the groomsmen wore yellow garden roses to pay respect to the groom’s grandfather who tended and grew garden roses at his home and wore one in his suit everyday.

We really wanted the guests to feel like they had walked into a big house out in the country, where we would be eating from the farm and decorating the space with flowers from the garden. It was full of nostalgia. Oak barrels and repurposed wood from a church was used on the walls to make the space more inviting. In the dining room there is a wall filled with plants to make you feel as though you are outside. It was very romantic and personal. The dance floor was right next to the bar to encourage the guests to mingle and get to know each other.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Wear what you want, eat what you want, play your favorite music. The day really does go by in a flash, so the more if feels authentic and comfortable then the more easy it will be to relax and enjoy it. And hire a good photographer and videographer! You can’t be everywhere at once on your wedding day and being able to look back and watch my father’s speech or see my best friends laughing and enjoying themselves, it really is a gift I’ll treasure for years.

Wedding Music:
Processional: “The Wedding Song,” Peter Paul and Mary
Recessional: “Pompeii,” Bastille
First Dance: “Latch,” Sam Smith (acoustic)
Music is so important to us. It is something that as a couple we bond over, going to shows, discovering new band, etc… Scratch actually told us that they’d never received so many song requests from a couple before…oopps. I love soul and 90’s hip hop and r&b, he loves alternative rock. We played everything from Kings of Leon, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Chaka Khan, NIN, Paramore, Rihanna and all that new fun music like Zedd and Kid Cudi. Then our DJ freestyled with some great club mixes and mashups for the last hour. Things got crazy in a good way! Bring on the dance circles!

From the photographer, Melissa of M2 Photography: Bride and groom both wanted more of a dinner party feel for their wedding, the “anti cookie-cutter wedding” if you will. Taylor is a pastry chef for the world-renowned chef Jean Georges and Jake is a self-described food snob so they knew their wedding had to incorporate an amazing menu and wanted a focus on the food and beverage. One challenge Jake and Taylor faced was figuring out a way to tastefully blend their inter-faith marriage. Taylor is Catholic and Jake is Jewish so they incorporated both a Priest and a Rabbi into their ceremony. Taylor also spent a few minutes privately with her twin sister and parents at their UWS church prior to heading to her wedding. When it came to choosing the location to host their wedding, Taylor wanted to make sure she had more of a hipster-vibe at her wedding in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Winery was the perfect location. Taylor was adamant about not having a wedding cake at all – until Jean George’s head baker offered to bake her a cake as a wedding gift. Jake’s gift to Taylor was a long weekend trip to Paris. Taylor’s career as a pastry chef has made Paris a dream vacation destination for them both. Flowers: Designs by Ahn used an assortment of orange dahlia and yellow ranunculus as well as Juliet garden roses. Taylor and Jake’s color palette was vibrant yellow and orange flowers as well as cream, blush and pale pink accents. They had a birch wood chuppah decorated with branches, hydrangea, stock, lisianthus passion vine and orange dahlias. Their wedding style aesthetic was fresh, modern and timeless.

Whimsical New York Wedding at MyMoon

Whimsical Weddings

Have we mentioned how much we love MyMoon? It’s the ultimate Brooklyn destination for a modern rooftop wedding, and we’ve never seen an event there that didn’t deliver the goods. Take today’s wedding from Khaki Bedford Photography, Sprout, and Dawn Mauberret, for example — geometric details, balloon table numbers, succulent floral arrangements, and ice cream sandwiches to top everything off at night. It doesn’t get much better than this!

From the bride, Tiffany: We wanted something that was playful, romantic and unique, with a bit of whimsy and lots of details. I made up the term “Urban Mediterranean Garden” to explain what I was thinking! I wanted succulent terrariums, pops of bold uplifting color, gold/bronze metallics and a mix of shapes – from diamond inspired geometrics to big round balloons. And some ampersands. Somehow it came together! It was important to remember that the venue already looked amazing without any decorations (which was why we booked there!), so less was more at times. I tried to make sure the stuff I was adding would complement the already unique look of the venue. The color scheme was inspired by succulents and the sea: shades of teals and greens, with a little pop of shimmery gold for festivity.

I wanted a bouquet that featured succulents with pops of color – Sprout Home did an amazing job by combining a unique combination of greenery and unique seasonal flowers. The terrarium centerpieces created by Sprout had a succulent base with some added flower buds and ferns to add pops of color and texture. The boutonnieres were handmade by the Mother of the Bride, Sheree McKee. We attached miniature Star Wars characters to them which my husband and I had been collecting from the local Brooklyn Flea. I loved the idea of showing off the towering ceiling and sky lights with the height of giant balloons. I also wanted to avoid placing numbers on the actual tables because they were pretty narrow. So, balloon table numbers it was! Numbers were (painstakingly) cut out of adhesive metallic paper, tassels were made from gold mylar party fringe and sheer ribbon, and metallic/black bakers twine was used as the main tie.

I was dead set against having traditional floral centerpieces. Instead, I wanted pieces guests could take away with them and plants that could live on. Solution: Terrariums! I hand-selected all the vessels and the miniatures that were displayed in each piece. Miniatures were purchased from various Hobby Shops online, Etsy, and Brooklyn Flea. There were about 40 different scenes in total ranging from beer drinkers relaxing on a beach, a dog riding a dinosaur, punk rockers, A BBQ party, tourists photographing gigantic dogs, footy players, kids flying kites, snow skiers, “classy” mooners, cow tippers and more. The 24 indoor terrariums were constructed by the talented folks at Sprout Home and our outdoor terrariums were constructed by family and friends days before the wedding. Our welcome/timeline sign was illustrated by a talented friend of mine – Emily Van Tassel – to match the invites I designed. My Mom initially used the giant frame to display photos at my Bridal Shower back in my home state of Michigan. She then painted it with chalkboard paint and drove it from Michigan to NYC where Emily used a variety of chalk pens to create an amazing keepsake sign for us (She rocked it!).

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Pick a venue that you already find aesthetically special. This way, if you don’t end up having time finish all the decor or add some finishing touches, the place will still look amazing and no one will notice. It will take some pressure off of you during those last couple weeks. We choose our venue specifically because A) It was beautiful B) the food was awesome and C) we didn’t need to rent anything at all! So, we were lazy. Lists. Big, giant, sticky note lists. Take a lot of deep breaths and try to keep the whole thing in perspective (it’s not always easy): while this event is the most important event you’ve ever planned, to all of your guests it’s just another (awesome) wedding. The key elements are simple: the 15-ish minutes it takes for the ceremony and then celebrating the ceremony with your VIPs. Since your guests already love you a shit ton, hopefully they will have fun celebrating regardless of what you do or don’t do. Keep it to your favorite humans. It’s nice for the party to be small enough so you can actually spend some QT with everyone there. We had around 80 people and I realized we still missed chatting with a few and I feel terrible about it. Read A Practical Wedding by Meg Keene – it helped calm me down.

Debonair Wedding at The Wythe Hotel

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Amber Gress

This stylish wedding at Brooklyn’s brilliantly modern Wythe Hotel is calling our name, lovely readers. Amber Gress and Tinsel & Twine contributed majorly to one heck of a party wedding for Kurt and Kyle, a truly cosmopolitan couple who knows how to have fun. There are TONS of great details and goodies to share here, so take some time to soak it all in!

debonair wedding at The Wythe Hotel - photo by Amber Gress http://ruffledblog.com/debonair-wedding-at-the-wythe

From the grooms, Kurt and Kyle: We met while studying abroad in Prague in the Fall of 2009. Kyle proposed in December 2013 at St Mark’s Church in the East Village (our meet up spot during college). We didn’t notice until later that Kyle proposed right above an astrological compass cemented in the square. The astrology theme tied reminded us of the famous astrological clock in Prague and it’s what ultimately led us to our design motif of constellations/stars/etc.

When deciding the look and feel of our wedding, one word came to mind: Chic. We wanted a neutral color palette that felt traditional and romantic, but as a juxtaposition to The Wythe’s amazing industrial details like exposed brick, raw air ducts, and graffit’d walls. Tinsel & Twine paired loose wild flowers with really cool, unique details like gold and glass geometric shapes as a nod to our shared love of Czech Cubism. Besides the food and the music and the decorations (!!!) one of the biggest hits of the night was our custom photobooth backdrop: a custom step-and-repeat with our wedding logo and an illustrated portrait of our dog, Butter, lovingly and skillfully created by Meghan of And Here We Are. Guests loved it. We literally had to drag people out at points in the night.

Wedding Music:
Processional: “Video Games,” Lana del Rey (instrumental)
Recessional: “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga

From the event designer, Erica of Tinsel & Twine: Our first meeting with Kurt & Kyle began with a bottle of rose and ended with an in-depth talk about astrology signs. It was love at first Air Sign. We had a blast working with an A-team vendor line-up. We’re seeing a big trend towards cocktail style weddings like Kurt & Kyle’s. We love this departure from the traditional wedding format because it allows guests to let loose and celebrate from start to finish. It feels very Now, and very New York. Traditional with a twist.

As a graphic designer, I believe that great graphic design is in the details {read: spending lots of time at the computer looking at pixels.} If you dont know what a pixel is- congratulations- because that’s why graphic designer types exist! {to save your eyesight} Really, though-design is more than matching colors and picking pretty fonts {but I do have major love for fonts} – it’s about conveying your message to the world with a swirl, a flourish, a dot, a pattern- whatever it takes to creatively encompass your clients vision and send that vision out into the world with impact.

Midsummer Night’s Ballet Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Enchanted wedding inspiration meets the New York City ballet in this stylish shoot from Diane Hu Photography and Busy Bride Planning + Consulting, and we couldn’t be happier. Dreamy details are laced throughout the entire shoot, inspired by Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, including two darling flower girls dressed as fairies. Add some pointe shoes, and we’re good to go!

From the stylist, Jackie of Busy Bride Planning + Consulting: We (Jackie Travers from Busy Bride Planning + Consulting, and Diane Hu from Diane Hu Photography) were inspired by the enchanted land of magical fairies, elegant lovers, and lush green woodlands from A Midsummer Night’s Dream as performed by the NYC Ballet. We thought it would be fun to style a playful wedding filled with romance, whimsy, and mischief!

Romance: We invited professional ballerina, Stephanie Salts, from the Lustig Dance Theatre of New Jersey, and New York City actor, Matthew Dunigan, to play the role of Shakespearean lovers. Through movement and dance, we captured delicate, intimate moments between our model bride and groom. The bride wore a gorgeous, custom Rebecca Schoneveld wedding gown with a lace corset bodice that accentuated her petite figure and a dramatic, long pleated skirt that allowed our ballerina bride to pirouette, arabesque, and chassé with ease. City Girl Flowers and Olivia Yun Lim made a delicate flower bridal crown comprised of light pink, blush and white roses to match our woodland theme.

Whimsy: We wanted to create a magical setting filled with unique, handmade details and fanciful décor. We filled our tablescape with assorted vintage chinaware. Each place setting varied just slightly to avoid looking “too” perfect! Park Slope Press created lovely letterpress table numbers and an exquisite ethereal invitation suite. The outdoor garden space at My Moon Bar and Restaurant has green ivy draped along stone walls and is surrounded by lush greenery, which provided the perfect woodland wonderland backdrop. City Girl Flowers and Olivia Yun Lim placed delicate flowers in hanging mason jars along the outdoor deck – the jars appeared to float in the sky. Our escort cards were hand made using small potted plants tied with a beautiful ribbon and displaying each guests’ name on a miniature white flags. The “ring bearer pillow” was also handmade with a moss-filled antique wooden box (found at a local antique store) and a gold ribbon to secure the rings. Our dessert table was full of refreshing summer treats: pitchers filled with strawberry lemonade, a donut tower decorated with flowers, and a simple vanilla cake adorned with blueberries. All of our DIY décor are simple, beautiful, and inexpensive projects that any bride-to-be can take on!

Mischief: Our A Midsummer Night’s Dream Ballet shoot would not have been complete without our adorable (and mischievous!) flower girl fairies, Emma (age 3) and Cameron (age 5). Janelle Funari New York provided stunning, hand-made couture dresses with French painted laces, silk taffeta and vintage trimmings. Petal Halo created custom-made flower headbands. The very talented Etsy shop, Enchanted Fairyware, created beautiful handmade fairy accents, including magical ballet style slippers and enchanted sparkle fairy wings. We are so grateful for the tremendously talented vendors who helped bring this magical story to life through dance, delicate details and whimsical décor!

Interfaith Wedding at Brooklyn Winery

Whimsical Weddings

Brooklyn Winery is one of those wedding venues we never, ever tire of seeing. Jodi and John chose the venue for their spring wedding, bringing along Clean Plate Pictures behind the camera and G! Designs for all floral design. Purple was the color of the day, showing up in all its beautiful shades. Let’s jump on in!

From the photographer, Erica of Clean Plate Pictures: Jodi and John tied the knot on a sunny spring day at one of my favorite venues, the Brooklyn Winery! Their wedding was as sweet and fun as the couple themselves. They had a unique interfaith ceremony that fused Christian and Jewish traditions. Afterward, the couple and guests had a blast getting down on the dance floor and lifting the bride and groom up in one lively hora! I had a great time capturing all the energy and love. Wishing you many years of happiness Jodi and John!

Chic Warehouse Wedding in Brooklyn

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Pat Furey

As soon as I heard the description “chic warehouse wedding in Brooklyn,” I was sold. Then I saw the work put together by all-stars Pat Furey, Bespoke Only, and Ariel Dearie Flowers, and I was completely blown away. Meredith and Billy wanted an intimate celebration with an industrial but welcoming vibe, and everything was topped off perfectly with a mix of fuchsia peonies and white anemones.

From the event designers and stylists, Bespoke Only: With a winter wedding in New York, Meredith and Billy always knew that they wanted something that not only feels warm and lively, but truly embraces the spirits of an inviting and intimate celebration. With the concept in mind, a sophisticated gathering was born at a warehouse turned venue that comes with both a stunning water view and an unique industrial interior vibe. We carefully curated the event with details that speak to both of the couple’s backgrounds and loves.

Inside of the raw and cool space, hanging cafe lights and generous amount of candlelight together provided a festive ambient lighting that warms up the exposed brick walls and expansive floor space. Exquisite and elegant, the head table was set apart by a vintage style farm table adorned with ample pale wooden pillar holders. A array of tables in mixed shapes brought interests to the floor layout, while deep champagne linen with jeweled toned of floral tied the entire scene together harmoniously without feeling overly matched. A large chalkboard that highlights the couple’s signature cocktails welcomed the guests by the entrance, while one gestural flowering quince arrangement hinted the coming of a new season as well as life. The ethereal ceremony had an altar that was graced by puddles of sequin runner and abundance of tea lights. When the night got late, a s’mores station was set up by the open fireplace, which made the most perfect concluding note for a night that was nothing short of warmth and togetherness.

Watercolor Whiskey Brunch Wedding

Wedding Design

Pastels mixed with bright spring colors and watercolor elements? Love, love, love. That was the basis for today’s styled shoot from Alexis June Weddings, H&H Weddings, and L’Oasis Floral Design, featuring two sweet grooms-to-be at their engagement shower. Shower or not, this shoot has no shortage of great spring wedding ideas for couples everywhere!

From the event designer, H&H Weddings: Perfect spring & summer inspiration seems simple enough, right? Pastels paired with light, lush blooms and bubbly cocktails tend to set the tone for the thawing season. When we started to think about producing a spring inspired shoot at the Kings County Distillery with two grooms-to-be, we realized how many stereotypes we’d have to bend (or break all together).

Of course, when you think traditionally about men in a whiskey distillery, it brings up images of rich mahogany, rocks glasses, plaid, tweed; typical elements of fall décor. So what were we to do? We settled on throwing all of those ideas out the window. Starting with watercolor as the basis for this shoot, we sought to incorporate the light pattern into as many facets of this shoot as possible. My unbearably talented friend, Gina Paola Design, created a watercolor pattern that we used for a backdrop, bottle bands, as an accent on the Octavia & Brown bar cart, and in the tablescape. These hues lightened up the distillery immensely.

From there, we chose bright blooms and spring-ready place settings, accented with gold. Though this could have felt overly feminine, we used a sturdy table and whiskey bottles to add masculine elements. I wanted to play with attire, as this was an engagement brunch of sorts, so formal wear was unnecessary. The floral blazer is a statement piece for sure. Vito donned it perfectly with a lavender button down and slim grey chinos. Jeff’s ensemble was meant to compliment Vito’s, so we used coral and leaf green for his outfit. Jewelry was kept to a minimum, as was hair and makeup, though Justine & Holly knocked the hair out of the park. Our scrumptious food was provided by the lovely ladies of Atelier Roquette. Yes, the food tasted just as beautiful as it looks! As a dessert element, I wanted to stray away from the macaron scene. When the idea of watercolor cookies came up, we couldn’t resist! April Preston Design won our hearts over with these stunning pieces of art! We almost didn’t want to eat them. Almost. The barrel room and seating vignette really brought light to how stunning the Kings County Distillery is. We were lucky to be able to showcase its versatility!

Intimate and Personal Wedding at MyMoon

Elegant Weddings

I don’t know what it is about hanging flower decorations, but I never seem to tire of them. They make a winning ceremony backdrop, and we love how they were implemented for today’s wedding at MyMoon from Rebecca Yale Photography and Designs by Ahn! Jannie and Ivan’s day was full of personal details perfectly suited to this self-titled opposites-attract couple.

intimate and personal wedding at MyMoon - photo by Rebecca Yale Photography http://ruffledblog.com/intimate-and-personal-wedding-at-mymoon

From the bride, Jannie: Ivan and I first met at a Summer job in 2003. We were really good friends for about 4 years before we started dating in 2007. I hear a lot of people say “I married my best friend” but it really hits home for us because we were truly just best friends before we even considered dating. Having that foundation really helped us get this far. Another thing I hear a lot is that opposites attract. Ivan’s quiet and quite honestly a bit of a dork – haha. I’m the opposite. I’m very vocal and very outgoing. Sort of a introvert/extrovert situation here, but I think we complement each other and help each other learn and grow. In the beginning of 2013 he went on a 6 month assignment in India for work. Halfway through, we had planned to meet in Japan for a vacation. During a visit to Japan’s annual winter light show called Nabano no Sato, where millions of LED lights cover the whole park, he surprised me with the ring. The location and atmosphere was perfect.

Planning for the wedding very nearly drove the both of us bonkers. We were looking to purchase a home and planning the wedding at the same time which was probably not the smartest thing to do, but I’d like to think of it as us trying to be overachievers. Overall, I think we went through what most couples go through. We cried over our lost weekends, had little voices nagging at us all hours of the day about what still needs to be done, sleepless nights, and feeling the need to bury our heads in the ground. It was quite the experience with lots of ups and downs, but we survived it. The night was amazing. Being surrounded by all our friends and family and having the time of our lives. What we went through leading up to it, it was all worth it. We went from acquaintances, buddies, best friends, girlfriend/boyfriend, and then finally this last title, husband and wife. Still feels a bit foreign on my tongue (or typing it). I may still stumble over the word “husband,” but I have no trouble calling him what he will always be to me: “my best friend.”

From the bride, Rebecca Yale Photography: Jannie and Ivan’s wedding was a lovely intimate affair at My Moon Restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Jannie and Ivan were the masters of DIY and brought together so many personal touches like the feathered escort cards Jannie made herself to the hundreds of books stacked on the tables as centerpieces, which Jannie got from the publishing house she works at. The morning started off with a beautiful tea ceremony at an air bnb rental (which is such a great idea for a getting ready space) then off to Prospect Park for portraits and then a beautiful outdoor Ceremony at My Moon followed by dinner and dancing inside the restaurant.

Intimate Garden Restaurant Wedding

Elegant Weddings

Katie and Connor’s wedding day is one for the books, you guys. Held in an intimate restaurant in the West Village of NYC, the reception was full of incredible flowers, rich greenery, and navy and gold polka dot table runners that have stolen our hearts. Redfield Photography and Designs by Ahn did some of their best work on this one!

From the bride, Katie: Our first thought was actually to elope, but that quickly changed so we could share the day with our loved ones. However, we still wanted to it to be an intimate special day. So the guest list was very limited, we were able to do a first look in the park before the service that then took place at a church in our neighborhood. The reception location was a cozy restaurant in the West Village that felt like it could have been a friend’s home. In the end it turned out to be so us, I don’t think we would change a thing!

Favorite memories of the day: The first look! It was a beautiful autumn morning in the park; it was a quiet moment with just the photographers, the wedding party, and us. It really was the perfect way to calm our nerves and start the day. The day went so fast, we were so thankful to have photographers who we trusted, and we ended up with photographs that will help us treasure the memories of that day forever! A great part about having an intimate wedding is that it is much easier to add custom DIY touches because you have such smaller quantities to produce. For our wedding this included painting gold dots on the table runners, spray painting unfinished wood candlestick holders, and making a sign for the cake table.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Spend your time working out the elements that mean the most to you. Also, I think it was surprising how some of the little things you worry about leading up to the wedding, seem so unimportant on that day.

St. Patrick’s Day Wedding Inspiration at a Pub

Wedding Design

St. Patrick’s Day has one of our all-time favorite color palettes, green and gold, and this styled shoot from Juli Vaughn Designs and Sarah Esther Photography fuses together those very colors with a brunch wedding for a shoot that’s making us as hungry as it is inspiring us! The icing on the cake has to be the sparkly green and silver beaded gown, a vintage find in Atlanta — just wait until you catch a glimpse.

From the event designer, Juli of Juli Vaughn Designs: The luck of the Irish sometimes extends to vintage green beaded dresses – at least that’s what makeup artist Andrea Carter experienced the day she found the dress that inspired this shoot. Tucked in between a mound of 80s prom dresses at an antique store in Atlanta, she spotted its sparkly sleeve and fell in love immediately.

Much like finding “the dress” and being excited to plan your wedding day, as soon as Andrea showed it to me, I knew we had to give it a second day in the spotlight as a star in a St. Patrick’s Day inspired wedding shoot. And what Irish-inspired wedding is complete without a pub, a gorgeous redhead, and plenty of Guinness (in ice cream float form)? We also threw in a brunch reception with a pancake “cake”, a hand drawn Celtic knot and family crest, sparkly custom jewelry, and a letterpress invitation suite that could turn anyone green with envy.

Untraditional Wedding at Brooklyn Winery

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Photo Philosophies

Has there ever been a wedding at Brooklyn Winery that didn’t take our breath away? My guess is no, and Courtney and Quinn’s beautiful day is yet another shining example of what gorgeous events can take place there. Photo Philosophies captured the wedding and its untraditional style (right down to the pink wedding dress) that’s just as stunning as it is off-the-beaten-path.

untraditional wedding at Brooklyn Winery - photo by Photo Philosophies http://ruffledblog.com/untraditional-wedding-at-brooklyn-winery

From the photographer, Jacquie of Photo Philosophies:
Courtney & Quinn came to me wanting something non traditional; Courtney had already picked out her ruffled pink dress with dark toned nail colors and Quinn’s cool chilled out style was a perfect match to Courtney. While mixing some of these off the beaten path elements, Courtney also wanted elegant, “rustic chic,” opting for Brooklyn Winery as their venue with super personal DIY touches.

Love Locks Inspired Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

Bright and colorful wedding inspiration is always welcome in our books, and today’s styled shoot from Mikkel Paige Photography, Dulce Dreams Events, and Makini Regal Designs fits the bill perfectly. The team used “love locks,” those darling padlocks inscribed with lovers’ names, as their main inspiration point, and carried the theme throughout the decor for a shoot that’s as fun as it is stylish.

colorful wedding invitations - photo by Mikkel Paige Photography http://ruffledblog.com/love-locks-inspired-wedding-ideas

From the photographer, Mikkel Paige: Love locks on famous bridges around the world informed the inspiration for this “Forever Linked” inspiration shoot, notably Ponts Des Arts in France. When photographer Mikkel Paige and Dulce Dream Events dreamed up the scene, they thought vibrant colors would be the perfect pop of happiness to accent the gold and silver of locks, keys and fences. Our hope is that the inspiration is for any couple who enjoys cheerful romance and a theme elegantly carried throughout a wedding day yet does not overwhelm it, whether they are in large cities like Paris, Rome, or Los Angeles, or in their smaller suburbs or closer to country homes. Details were engrained in every inch of the shoot, from the bride’s fingernails to the chain links on the couple’s chairs.

The bride wore a stunning two-piece gown and a second, shorter dress with thousands of gold link strands on it. A favorite stand out detail was custom nail art on the bride’s fingertips, complete with gold metal accents and Swarovski crystals on top of a pink ombre design. The bridesmaids had a neutral glitter half-moon nail design to allow the bride’s fingers to stand out. A lock and key were fastened in the bride’s hair with a beautiful gold chain link from a custom bobby pin designer. She wore stand out blue suede heels for a fun pop of color and had pink lips. The bridesmaids wore two different styles of gorgeous cobalt blue dresses, and all the women wore jewelry with links to emulate the theme.

The bride’s bouquet had a custom ribbon design wrap design around its stems, where keys hung down from and seemed to chime like wedding bells when she walked. The bridesmaids carried single stems of blossomed yellow peonies. The men wore custom suits and the groom wore a navy blue tie. Small skeleton keys were affixed to the men’s boutonnieres. For the ceremony backdrop, keys were dipped in orange, yellow and pink paint and tied on blue ribbons that hung from an oversized gold glittered link chain motif. A dinner menu was presented to guests on a framed board uniquely chalked on “blueboard” instead of black, with hand lettering done in white ink. Agate coasters and gold striped glasses sat next to gold flatware and silver metallic dotted and blue scalloped-edge plates. The highlight of the tables was the place settings: one master wall in the reception area had table cards, each containing several guests names. Once at their table, guests found their names on hand-painted locks, on top of pieces of silver “fencing”, tied up with blue tulle. The bride and groom’s seats were especially decorated with gold and silver chain and “L” + “G” links for their names, Lorelai and Grant. A cake was adorned in carefully handcrafted gumpaste flowers to match the centerpieces, and a lock and key on the cake stand gently echoed the theme.

The evening ended with a toast to the happy couple, with “You stole my heart and forever threw away the key,” quoted on tags that hung from gorgeous blue glasses, finished with the couple’s initials. It was all beautifully placed in front of huge marquee light-up letters “BAR.” Lanterns surrounded the sign with rose heads inside instead of candles. This couple’s gorgeous day reminded us how wonderful it is to write your name and the name of the love of your life on a lock, put it on a fence in a romantic city, and then hold the key to each other’s heart forever. Forever Linked in love.

Stylish Brooklyn Wedding at MyMoon

Elegant Weddings

Photos by:

Lev Kuperman

Brooklyn certainly has no shortage of incredible wedding venues, but one of our favorites has to be MyMoon in Williamsburg. The site proved itself the perfect location for Jillian and Aiden’s wedding. Lev Kuperman and Sprout Home also outdid themselves behind the camera and with floral design, respectively, for a romantic industrial wedding that’s sure to inspire.

From the bride, Jillian: We wanted a effortlessly pretty wedding. We wanted everything to look pretty, and a little rough around the edges. Some adjectives to describe our wedding would be classic, romantic, rustic, enchanting, elegant, and charming. Our theme was to just make the day pretty and romantic, and add a bit of Brooklyn to it. We didn’t have a color theme, but I would say we used a lot of different shades of pink with pops of yellow, and a lot of green. Our DIY project were our thank you favors which were bottles of infused peach bourbon. We had infused bourbon for 3 months before bottling them up for our guests.

Bouquet recipe: The flowers used were a mix of Amnesia Roses, Turtle Roses, Chamomile Flowers, Spray Roses, Garden Roses, Peonies, Dahlias, Ranunculus and Anemones, with some Annes Lace and Baby’s Breath. I was going for a wildflower look, so there were a bunch of different flowers in there.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I would say enjoy planning and make sure both couples play a part in making the decision. My Husband and I did this and the wedding perfectly represented us. You could see that the detail in the flowers, venue, wardrobe was all very personal and represented us both individually and as a couple. Planning is so much fun, and on the wedding day when I walked into the reception and saw that my florist really understood what I wanted, and how I wanted all the bud vases set up. I was so happy! But, there were things that don’t go exactly as planned on your wedding day, but you have to just move on and thing will work itself out. We forgot out table signs, and I didn’t realize until I arrived. I didn’t panic and the venue just happened to have some extras laying around. It was great.

Wedding Music:
Processional: “You’re So Cool,” Hans Zimmer (True Romance Soundtrack)
First Dance: “Just Like Heaven,” The Cure
We played a mix of 80ss and Classic Rock. Everyone was Dancing! Who hates Classic rock and Classic 80s tunes? We all know the words, which makes it more fun to dance to! Our Processional song was “You’re so cool” from the movie true romance. My husband has the True Romance Tattoo on him with our names inside (Like Clarance and Alabama) It’s his favorite movie, so I thought it was appropriate.
