Moss-Filled Michigan Wedding

Romantic Weddings

If you’re looking to get inspired by a wedding with a stunningly clean and green wedding palette, Agnes and Jeff’s Michigan wedding is it. Shot by MorningWild Photography, it’s got these whimsical and romantic details that had us wanting more and more. Rebecca from Ideal Events & Design sought to bring Agnes’s elegant woodland wedding ideas to life and it’s quite safe to say she achieved that goal along with Damsel Floral‘s unbelievably good centerpieces. Those glimmers of peach florals in the arrangements were the perfect touch of color!

From the planner, Rebecca from Ideal Events & DesignI was thrilled when Agnes reached out to me to work on her upcoming wedding to Jeff. As an art director, Agnes had a wonderful vision for their wedding day and I was thrilled to help bring her elegant woodland wedding to life. Agnes had already chosen a beautiful location, a private white barn at Bieker Farms, which is nestled between beautiful woodlands and an apple orchard, so we began working on securing the rest of her vendors and bringing together all of the elements of the day.

Of course the location was such a feature of the design for this wedding – Agnes wanted to highlight the woods that surrounded the property because she and Jeff often escape on weekends to family woodlands in Northern Michigan. Incorporating moss (collected from the family land) and ferns was a way to bring their life into the design elements. The bride and her friends spent a day creating the gorgeous moss covered sign to hang behind the bar and ferns were featured in the centerpieces by Damsel Floral. Agnes even created a fern logo to use throughout the wedding stationery.

As we began to build the day, it was always evident that Agnes and Jeff kept their guests at the forefront of their minds. They truly wanted everyone in attendance to feel part of their celebration – from ensuring polka music was played for her Polish family members to serving family style meals to encourage conversation – so many decisions focused on their family and friends. As the evening went on and the celebration lasted well into the night with late night pizzas and a sparkler send off for the newlyweds, I do believe their guests enjoyed every minute of it!

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

Whimsical Michigan Beach Wedding

Beach Weddings

Photos by:

Jenn Emerling

Let this be known: rain will never stop weddings! Shot by Jenn Emerling and planned and designed by Ali Strickland of A Gypsy Fête, Meghan and Brian’s whimsical wedding went ahead as planned despite all of the looming gray skies, and it was beautiful! While the rain held off, Jenn captured some precious moments between the bride and groom on the beach among the wildflowers; and as everything moved to the tents, she worked her photographer magic and shot some of the most unique beach wedding decor I’ve ever laid my eyes on. No seashells here! The Foxglove Studio carefully crafted wedding centerpieces with box planters acting as holders as they were packed in with garden roses, dahlias, daisies, and succulents. To round it off, antlers, lace, and votives were strewn down the tables. This was a beach wedding done so right, even if the rain came!

michigan weddings - photo by Jenn Emerling http://ruffledblog.com/whimsical-michigan-beach-wedding

From the photographer, Jenn Emerling: Meghan + Brian got married in Brian’s hometown — a sleepy Lake Michigan beach town of about 1,000 people. Their family and friends rallied together when their ceremony became completely soaked by a major rainstorm and had to move everything into the tent. But this did not damper their emotional, joyous wedding, and they had a pretty amazing dance party all through the night! The videographer and I were lucky enough to get lots of beautiful portraiture of the couple in the sand dunes and wildflowers along the beach before the rain came.

Copper + Fruit Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

These days, copper is one of those accents we just can’t resist. Pair it up with eucalyptus and then add one hands-down show-stopping gown from Hayley Paige, and goodness gracious we’re in love. Thank you to Lauren Elisabeth Events for dreaming up this inspiring scene, Giving Tree Photography for capturing it all on camera, and The Sodus Blossom for your beautiful floral arrangements!

Copper Fruit Wedding Inspiration - photo by Giving Tree Photography http://ruffledblog.com/copper-fruit-wedding-inspiration

From the event designer, Lauren Elisabeth Events: We wanted a very earthy and chic feel for our styled shoot with a lot of blues and greenery. We wanted to incorporated copper touches and fell in love with the idea of spray painting real fruit for our centerpiece, place cards, table number, and to include in the bouquet and on the cake. I spray painted the fresh fruit 2 days prior to the shoot – pineapple, pears and grapes – and used a metallic copper spray paint. Once everything was dry, I gently placed them back into the refrigerator and they kept very nicely. We absolutely loved how the fruit turned out and the statement it makes in the pictures.

Autumn Lakeside Proposal

Wedding Design

This styled proposal shoot from Bradley James Photography and The Day’s Design came together as soon as the designer spied a gorgeous invitation suite from Wedding Paper Divas. As soon as we saw the stationery for ourselves, we understood the temptation! The scene begins with a romantic indoor proposal, followed by lakeside portraits just as beautiful as the happy couple themselves.

autumn lakeside proposal - photo by Bradley James Photography http://ruffledblog.com/autumn-lakeside-proposal

From the event designer, The Day’s Design: The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler and the world is taking on a golden brown hue. We’re welcoming autumn rains, velvet touches and evenings lit by candlelight. It’s a clear sign that engagement season is just around the corner. When I saw Wedding Paper Diva’s dreamy invitation suite with its fairytale-like lake scene the whole story just came to life. With mixed metallic and touches of grey blue, we imagined a lakeside story filled with sequins and wheat grass, where rustic meets elegance and love was surely to thrive. The perfect place to start to the journey to “I do”.

Modern Romantic Wedding Ideas with Marsala

Wedding Design

Marsala is a color that continues to inspire, and we’ve never seen it look so good as it does paired with copper in today’s styled shoot. Kai Heeringa Photography, Ideal Events & Design, and Damsel Floral Co. created a styled wedding that brings together both traditional romance and also modern design ideas for a look that’s truly captivating.

modern romantic wedding ideas with marsala - photo by Kai Heeringa Photography http://ruffledblog.com/modern-romantic-wedding-ideas-with-marsala

From the event designer, Rebecca of Ideal Events & Design: Inspiration for this shoot came initially from the Pantone Color of the Year, marsala. This color choice has been the subject of many heated blog posts and designer discussions! When I first heard the color choice, I was taken aback, feeling like many that it seemed dated. However, whenever a color of the year is announced, we always see it used as varied shades through the design world and no one can argue that shades of maroon, burgundy, and fig have been used more often lately. So I chose to use a variation of marsala as an accent in a wedding designed to take place between the transitioning of seasons from winter to spring. Icy gray linens with lots of candlelight, thick oriental rugs, and a cocktail station are a nod to warm winter nights by the fire, while blush pinks, lots of greenery, and tulips hint of the spring to come.

Bouquet recipe: Kaci of Damsel Floral put together the loveliest floral arrangements, starting with an amazing bridal bouquet of ranunculus, veronica, tulips, roses, protea, and campsis. The trailing ribbons were the final touch that made me fall head over heels for the bouquet.

The icy gray linens from Special Occasions West set off the perfect amount of shimmer and the fig napkins matched the place card envelopes perfectly. These envelopes, beautifully calligraphed by Emilie of Lief Design, contained the evening’s menu card. A simple but dramatic touch to add on each place setting. The table runner of eucalyptus smelled amazing and only needed a collection of candlesticks from Events by I.Candy to be completed.

Our bride and groom, both ballet dancers, were a stunning couple. The bride was dressed in a lace Rosa Clara gown from Renee Austin Wedding. This classically beautiful dress needed no other adornment, especially with the romantic hairstyle and gorgeous makeup from Whitney and Sarah at Brindle & Blonde. And yes, that is all the model’s real hair! The groom was outfitted in a classic suit from AK Rikk’s. My favorite detail of his outfit was the small blue pin on his lapel. The Studio at AK Rikk’s is an amazing space – with both modern and classic elements, so many weddings and events would work perfectly here. The moulding makes the walls anything but basic and natural light streams in through a wall of windows. Every detail was captured beautifully by Kai Heeringa Photography. The invitation suite, with shades of blush pink and fig, was designed by Ideal Events & Design and addressed in the most gorgeous calligraphy from Lief Design.

Woodland Michigan Barn Wedding

Rustic Weddings

Today’s bride and groom met while in Nara, Japan — home to many wandering tame deer — so it was only natural their wedding theme embraced the woodlands and had plenty of nods to these cute animals. The wonderful Allie Siarto Photography captured this woodsy affair, so let’s take a look!

woodland Michigan barn wedding - photo by Allie Siarto Photography http://ruffledblog.com/woodland-michigan-barn-wedding

From the bride, Taylor: We are really quite lucky in that our parents decided it was best to give us two weddings. We had just been married a week before in Florida, but this second wedding blessing and reception in Michigan allowed everyone in the family to be there. My aunt and uncle lent us their barn in the woods, so a woodland theme seemed to fit really well and be different than our wedding in Florida.

We met in Nara, Japan, where there are hundreds and hundreds of tame deer wandering around the parks. We spend so many dates there, walking around in the sunshine, and feeding the deer. So that’s how we ended up with a woodland and deer theme. My aunts and mom really took off running with the idea – and went crazy with it! I turned up one day before, and they had turned the barn into this amazing place!

I loved all the vintage books that my aunt had sources in deep greens, the cute little deer my mom had scoured antique shops for. We had a typewriter I had lugged over from England, cute handwritten signs by my amazingly talented cousin, mason jars, twinkle lights, and the most amazing wood log planters. We were very lucky – a lot of people came out to help us – some family friends lent us hundreds of beautiful antique dishes, some other family friends did the food, my uncle smoked a whole pig AND built a huge wood bar for the event. My aunt officiated, and my cousin drove us around on the golf cart while we searched for the perfect photo spot. It was….so different from our wedding a week before, in such a good way that it allowed us to relax and enjoy time with our family and friends – and some real good BBQ food!

Gold Hidden Vineyard Wedding in Michigan

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Heather Jowett

When Nicole and Drew started planning their wedding, they began to realize how contrasting their styles were from each other. Instead of letting the differences get to them, they chose to embrace the differences and incorporate both their styles into the big day. The result was purely magical and included the talents of Heather Jowett and A Splendid Occasion, and the couple topped it all off with some day-after portraits wearing a boho dress in a cornfield. Perfect.

gold hidden vineyard wedding in Michigan - photo by Heather Jowett http://ruffledblog.com/gold-hidden-vineyard-wedding-in-michigan

From the bride, Nicole: Drew and I met five years before we started dating and dated for four years before getting engaged. We had a long engagement by Midwestern standards — just under two years. When we finally started planning our wedding we realized how different we really were and chose to embrace the differences rather than fight about them. As such, we created a wedding where almost every element had a perfectly matched foil. We styled a vintage barn with modern ghost chairs and lawn games. We didn’t play by the rules and had a flower girl, but no ring bearer. We opted for French macarons and homemade pie over cake. We had our first dance in private as the sun was setting and barefoot. We skipped the hokey wedding music and chose to start the day with an electric violinist playing everything from The Lumineers to Hotel Costes and ended with a local country rock band that got everyone on the dance floor. I danced and he didn’t. But we both joined at the end of the night to enjoy some good ‘ole fashioned McDonald’s cheeseburgers that were delivered about an hour before last call for all guests – and I even got him on the dance floor for a song or two!

Hosting our wedding in Michigan allowed us to splurge in so many other areas that we otherwise would not have. But most importantly we were able to host an entire weekend of events beginning with a casual welcome dinner on Thursday evening at the tiniest hole-in-the-wall burger joint on the outskirts of town. On Friday a few dozen of us went wine tasting and vetted off onto the back country roads in a trolley. Having that time with our closest friends set the tone for the remainder of the weekend. That evening my in-laws hosted an incredible welcome dinner for all wedding guests on the patio overlooking the harbor at the hotel. It was simple, cozy, and perfect (and yes, there were crazy DIY details for that party, too). The morning after the wedding we also hosted a farewell brunch (with more handmade details) – allowing us ample time to say goodbye to everyone before they began their lengthy travels back home. Following brunch we met our lovely photographer, Heather Jowett, by the cornfields to get my ever-so-dreamy day after shots. And that night when we drove back to Chicago we stopped at our favorite pizza spot, Homeslice (wedding day hair + bohemian day after gown and all) to grab a bite and a beer. The weekend could not have been more perfect.

One of my favorite memories of the day was walking down the aisle to our electronic violinist playing Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition. I had envisioned this day for so many months that by the time my Dad stood there waiting to walk me down the aisle, I just about lost it. It was the most surreal moment of the entire weekend. He started rambling about something completely unrelated to calm me down and before I knew it I was buried in the most meaningful hug of my life and then just like that he was giving me away.

Absolutely everything down to the last detail was tailored for our special day. My reception dress, ceremony dress, and the insanely gorgeous ostrich feather flower girl dress were all designed by friend and uber talented designer, AZEEZA. The men had cat (yes, cats!) ties that were custom made by Knotty Tie. And all of the tiny little paper goods – I DIY’d on for the entire year leading up to our wedding. The DIY route was a tedious one, but well worth it in the end because it made the day feel like it truly represented us as a couple. My mother-in-law and I worked for months on all of the crazy details from the gold straws, escort cards, menus, the penny ‘BAR’ sign, golden cats, and salt favors. Every detail had meaning well beyond the surface.

In planning your wedding try not to shoot for perfection. There are too many moving parts and too much to be grateful for to focus on all of the nitty gritty details. I’m a control freak so in true fashion I planned and prepped for everything that could go wrong, including rain. What I didn’t plan for – 57 degrees in mid-September resulting in the mad dash to find heaters the week of our wedding, my semi-blue lips in our wedding video, or shivering at the alter! It was, in a word, FREEZING! But the funny thing – no one around us seemed to care. They were all just so excited for what was yet to come, and what was happening, that they found a coat, huddled close, drank more and had a blast regardless. It’s frightening how easy it is to lose sight of the big picture and the real prize (getting married and spending the rest of your life with your best friend!) but months down the road when all has subsided, you’ll be grateful for such an incredible day with family and friends but even more so of the person you get to wake up to every morning.

Botanical Garden Wedding with Glass Ceilings

Garden Weddings

It’s no secret that greenhouse weddings are, well, kind of my thing. It just so happens that Planterra Conservatory is the queen mother of all greenhouses, complete with the most incredible glass ceilings we’ve seen in a while! Kelly Sweet Photography captured every bit of Melissa and Sean’s lush botanical wedding day.

From the bride, Melissa: Sean and I live in Baltimore, Maryland and got engaged in Ocean City in October 2014. He proposed in the ocean, on one knee, and his exact words were, “Honey, let’s take the plunge!” and then dunked both our bodies under water. He didn’t have a ring at the time, so we walked along the beautiful boardwalk and bought a simple silver claddagh ring to honor Sean’s Irish heritage. A few weeks later, my Grama generously offered us a diamond that her mother had given her — my great grandmother — and together Sean and I bought a beautiful antique-looking setting. Sean’s ring — this huge turquoise and silver thing — is a real treasure. He didn’t want a traditional wedding band, and found something that would suit him better at (of all places!) a pawn shop in downtown Detroit. He was with my dad at the time, and it was a nice bonding experience for the two of them.

Fast forward to November 2014: Sean and I got married in a gorgeous, high-ceilinged greenhouse in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where my parents and family live. The setting was very romantic: lots of lush, organic florals in rich berry hues and long family-style tables for friends and family. My bouquet and chuppah (the traditional Jewish wedding canopy) were made of delicate pale pinks and creams with wild flowy greenery thrown in for balance.

Our ceremony was so special. Sean is Irish Catholic and I’m Jewish, and our Rabbi and Cantor did a wonderful job weaving together our two traditions and backgrounds. I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of “Falling Slowly” played by a string quartet. Rabbi Yedwab incorporated words and stories that Sean and I had written about each other, so the words felt so intimate and genuine. All our guests feel welcome, and our personalities stood out alongside traditional Jewish prayers and traditions. I remember thinking to myself towards the end of the ceremony, “When will everyone stop talking so I can KISS MY HUSBAND?!” It was a wonderful moment in time. Hopeful and full of love and joy.

After the ceremony guests feasted on specialty cocktails, a simple, rustic menu, and wedding cake from Sweet Heather Anne. Our band, The Persuasion, played a great version of “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole for our first dance. Our little cousins, nieces, and nephews wanted in on our first dance, so I picked one of the little flower girls up to dance with us. Sean got jealous and said, ‘You’re my wife and this is our first dance and I’d like you to myself for a few moments.” Ha! The band had the entire crowd of 150 out of their seats and dancing all night. At the end of the evening my bridesmaids and I changed into our street clothes and danced to an iPod. Sean and I felt so incredibly supported and loved and cherished, and will think fondly of our wedding day forever. We’re expecting a baby next year — and the due date is right around our wedding date! Who knows… we may have a little baby bundle to love on our first wedding anniversary!

Bohemian Luxe Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Late fall/early winter is one of our favorite times of year for more reasons than we could ever begin to list here. Alyssa McElheny Photography and Horrocks Market put together this bohemian luxe inspired shoot in the woods, and it’s truly boho at its finest. Not only is this styled shoot a show-stopper in general, but the majority of it was handcrafted by the photographer herself, including the bride’s skirt, cakes, floral arrangements, and yarn murals.

From the photographer, Alyssa McElheny: As a photographer, being able to dream of and whip up and tweak and construct my own shoot was absolutely incredible. I’m realizing that wedding styling and design are huge passions of mine. Lately, I’ve been feeling especially inspired by the darkness and colors and textures of this season (fall/winter) and I wanted to create a miniature wedding based around these ideas. I’m realizing more and more that fall weddings are my absolute favorite to shoot.

This styled shoot was dreamt up to be luxe and boho and dark (except, of course, for the blush skirt worn by the bride), with plenty of gold, rich and colorful foods, furs, and greens greens greens. I also loved hand crafting the bride’s ensemble, cakes, floral arrangements, and yarn murals.

Whimsical Wonderland Shoot

Wedding Design

In case you missed this week’s Alice in Wonderland themed bridal shower, let us reiterate that we’re always up for some good Wonderland themed wedding inspiration. Matt and Ashley Photography took this vision and ran with it, bringing along the talented A Touch of Whimsy Events, Flair Necessities, and The Vines Flower and Garden Shop to bring everything full circle – and of course, we love the result!

whimsical wedding invitations - photo by Matt and Ashley Photography http://ruffledblog.com/whimsical-wonderland-shoot

From the photographers, Matt and Ashley Photography: We had the privilege of collaborating with a team of twelve talented metro-Detroit wedding vendors in making Alice in Wonderland come to life in a styled wedding shoot. The idea was planted in the midst of Michigan’s harsh, grey winter while I was selling my own wedding goods to vintage rental extraordinaire Kaylin Scott of A Touch of Whimsy Events. We craved a romantic, dreamlike scene to bring in spring and inspire our future brides. We immediately brought the idea to the talented Karie Hillman-Doonan of Flair Necessities and joined forces.

Over several months, we meticulously planned four whimsical scenes, including an entrance with a door framed by greenery, a vintage couch underneath a tall tree, a drink & favor stand and an elaborate tablescape adorned with teacups, moss and desserts. Although Alice is Wonderland is typically thought of as cartoon-like and eccentric, we drew inspiration from soft, elegant elements. We harnessed our ideas and executed them through a blush, ivory and gold color palette that was woven together with greenery and moss.

A Touch of Whimsy Events and Flair Necessities stylized each scene on-site within the gorgeous woods at Waldenwoods Resort, and The Vines Flower and Garden Shop loaned us their unbelievable talent and lush blooms to add the finishing touches. We weaved dreamy details throughout the entire shoot, including floating teacups with large flowers above a vintage, ivory couch. Thanks to a gorgeous wedding gown provided by The White Dress and designed by Justin Alexander, our beautiful Alice & her groom looked as though they stepped out of the storybook. They were even joined by an extra large, extra friendly White Rabbit.

Whimsical Michigan Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

Photos by:

Jill DeVries

I love today’s couple almost as much as I love their wedding. Jill DeVries shot this beautiful Michigan wedding in the woods, which was all the best that bohemian and DIY had to offer. The Stone Cold Fox was the mastermind behind bride Alyssa’s wedding dress — one after which we’re still swooning!

whimsical michigan wedding // photo by Jill DeVries via ruffledblog.com

From the bride, Alyssa: I have always loved weddings, wedding photos, crafts, wedding blogs, and creative, DIY weddings. When I started dating my future groom, however, many of my elaborate ideas about weddings changed. Daniel is so incredibly relaxed and easy going. He calms me down. Therefore, we sought to create a very laid back wedding in the woods.

We used lots of color, gold, and kraft paper brown as our wedding theme. My grandma sewed hundreds of napkins in several colors. We painted many many candles and cans gold. We made a dozen or so cake plates using glass and wood plates and golden charger plates. We hand-stamped our own invitations and my sister designed our menus and programs. All of the girls and mothers picked our own flowers and flowers for the tables (mostly greens) from my parent’s garden the day before the wedding. We just loved how personal everything ended up being. We would not have had this day without the army of friends and family that came along side of us to help us.

My dress was designed by The Stone Cold Fox (based in California). The designers were so easy and flexible to work with and they create such beautiful, unique gowns. It was one of my favorite parts of the day. I’ve followed and admired Jill DeVries’ work for many years. I knew for absolute certain that she would be our photographer on that day. She has such an ability to document the unique feel of a day. Her photos focus on the details, patterns, light, and quirks that many would ignore. She was just the best to have with us on our day. Woodsy & Whimsical Midwest Wedding

Blue Label

Photos by:

J Wiley Photography

A woodsy wedding turned weekend escape – this fun loving bride and groom left the windy city to share their special day in a beautiful Michigan barn tucked in the woods. Blue Label vendor J Wiley Photography was there to capture their wedding day, filled with preppy-rustic inspiration.

woodsy-whimsical-midwest-barn-wedding

From the bride, Mackenzie: When Matt and I started planning our wedding, we wanted it to reflect us as a couple: slightly casual, laid-back, and a good time with a lot of laughs. We live in downtown Chicago but wanted to have a destination without the flying. We searched high and low for wedding venues and chose a renovated barn in Watervliet, Michigan. Mill Creek Barn is 2 hours from the heart of the city but another world, surrounded by nature, in the middle of nowhere. Being 2 hours away also gave us the opportunity to escape with our family and friends for more than just 1 night. We made a weekend of it, complete with a winery trip and a pizza party for all of our loved ones.

As we began to plan, we knew that we gravitated towards simplicity in our décor but wanted the details to shine. The planning was truly a family endeavor. Both my husband and mother are event planners and we have a very crafty family. Since I am more of a “big picture” person, I put my mother in charge of the flowers and centerpieces and she knocked it out of the park. From choosing the perfect flowers to hunting flea markets to find the perfect ball jars to cutting old barn wood to put on the tables, everything came together perfectly.

We chose navy and bright green as our wedding colors. The navy popped so well against the greenery around the property. I asked my bridesmaids to purchase any short navy dress and they all looked gorgeous! Our guys wore navy 3-piece suits and were so handsome. In case you couldn’t tell, facial hair was a requirement to be a groomsman in our wedding!

One of my favorite details of the day was the homemade blueberry jam that my great-aunt made. They acted as both our favors and our place cards. We used different navy and green fabrics and decorated them with raffia and they turned out fantastic. Another favorite detail was our cake, which was dedicated to the city we love, Chicago. We had different layers of red velvet and almond cake, decorated with a simple Chicago skyline in navy.

The day was absolutely perfect. There was an 80% chance of rain, but the sun came out 15 minutes before our ceremony. Love was in the air and we were so blessed to share it with such wonderful family and friends. I can say with all honesty that I wouldn’t have changed a thing – all our hard work really paid off! We certainly love a good party and the reception was more than we could’ve imagined. Our DJ is THE BEST and set the tone for an out-of-control 4 hour dance party. Warm weather and no air conditioning resulted in a sweaty mess and the best party we’ve ever thrown!

I have to admit, when I first saw this real wedding from Just Alex Photography, I was certain it was a styled shoot. Aren’t newlyweds Allie and Josh just the most gorgeous duo? We love that Allie didn’t give up on her dream wedding gown and finally had a dressmaker craft it, and it so perfectly suits her!

From the bride, Allie: When Josh asked me to marry him I knew exactly what we envisioned for our day. He’s a country boy and I am a sucker for anything vintage, shabby chic and rustic. We wanted the wedding to be us so we combined all of it!

We would describe our wedding as Vintage, Rustic, DIY, Casual, and Us. Our color theme was mint, and all accents were lace, burlap, and dusty rose. Everything you see in our wedding was special to us. I antiqued for every single piece, and hand created with help of family and friends every decoration. That’s what made our day so special. Everything in our wedding has a story that we will always remember.

I struggled with my wedding dress for quite some time. I bought one and felt like I was settling because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. I drew up a design of the dream dress in my head and took it to a lady who helped make my vision come to life. I didn’t want a veil with my dress because everything was so casual and our day wasn’t traditional. I found my halo on etsy and knew it would go perfect with the belt I had for my dress. I found my shoes before we were engaged at an antique store. When I started planning our day I knew they would be perfect with the vintage theme. I was struggling with my jewelry and found an old locket on etsy. I got our date engraved on the inside and fell in love! Josh got me a bracelet that I added to the ones I already had. We exchanged gifts before we saw each other and his came with a long note. It was a charm bracelet that he explained would grow as our love does! He is so sweet!

Upper Peninsula Woodsy Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

Photos by:

This off-the-grid Michigan wedding from Kat and Dylan Schleicher of Ellagraph Studios has completely captured our hearts and reminded us why we love a good woodsy wedding. It was a truly Eco-friendly fete with virtually no waste left. The bride, groom, and their families and friends spent months preparing for the wedding, including cleaning and clearing a plot in the woods for their ceremony and reception. Not only the couple, but also some of their guests, spent time camping to get into the festive spirit!

Nora & Jared, Off the Grid 08.06.11

From the bride, Nora: EVERYTHING was a DIY project. We built our wedding on my brother’s land which is out in the northern forest and it is completely off-grid. We had no power, or running water. We worked on the land for a month beforehand. We built the beautiful elliptical stage, and cleared the large area where we put our big tent. The clearing and road to it, were a neighborhood group effort with the use of tractors and many hours of help by many beautiful people who helped just because they knew it was needed. My husband built the romantic bridge and pine arch that I crossed over to walk up our cedar-bow ‘aisle’. My brother, Mike, built another bridge near the tent that guests could take over to the ‘margarita bar’ which we constructed. My sister-in-law, Erica, and I did a lot of path work, clearing walkways from one magical place to the next. Jared (my husband) and I cleared the trees and scrub for the ceremony site, and all of this took place along a trickling creek.

We had very little waste, using bamboo plates that are currently decomposing on the land (and should be dirt within a few more months). All other utensils and glassware were gathered from second-hand shops by a few friends and family members. They have been donated back, minus a few that people wanted to keep. My nieces took the reigns on decorating each mason jar (for drinking out of) so that each would be different and identifiable to it’s owner. I bought inexpensive, white towels from IKEA and my maid-of-honor and I hand-dyed them all purple to stand out on the muslin table clothes. Everyone involved with the wedding, now has a few purple kitchen towels in their home.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Ask for help, and dole out jobs to people ahead of time. When it comes down to a day or two before, it’s ok to let a few things go undone. It’s no biggie. Savor everything!

Nora & Jared, Off the Grid 08.06.11

From the photographer, Kat: Nora and Jared’s story is very sweet. They grew up together near Marquette, Michigan and were good friends their whole lives. It wasn’t until a few years ago, that they realized they were in love (Jared lived in Los Angeles, Nora on the East Coast). They live in Bend, Oregon now, but when they decided to get married, it was a no-brainier that it will be held near their childhood homes in the U.P. With help from their family and friends they spent one month prior to their wedding clearing space in the woods on the bride’s brother’s land for the ceremony and reception. They actually lived in a little camper in the woods while they re-landscaped the land. Most of the decor and design of the wedding was done by the Bride and Groom, very creative artists/musicians. (This included paths through the woods, a space for the reception tent, a clearing in the forest for the ceremony, a covered wood bridge, a margarita bar). For me, the brass band processional through the forest from the ceremony clearing to the reception tent was one of the most amazing things I have seen at a wedding. Many of the guests camped on the land over the weekend too.

This Michigan wedding is absolutely stuffed to the gills with handmade rustic decor, sure to inspire any bride out there! Seriously, how amazing is their floral chandeliers at reception? We love that it looks like it appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the woods! Shot by Lauren Gabrielle, this DIY wedding was truly a labor of love.

From the bride, Karrie: When Joe and I were first engaged we had already mulled over what we wanted our day to look and feel like. As we were excitedly discussing our June nuptial plans with family and friends the one word we found leaping out of our mouths constantly was “cozy”! With “cozy” being the theme in mind, the only place we could picture exchanging vows at was my Aunt and Uncle’s home in the quaint town of Owosso, Michigan where I grew up.

When I started to dream up what the ceremony and reception would look like, I knew I wanted a lot of handmade details and vintage aspects and I knew I would need some help if I were to pull it all off! We have an incredibly talented set of family and friends that really made the process of planning fun and stress-free. We collected vases from local thrift shops for months, and made our table cloths and runners out of inexpensive painters tarps and burlap from a hardware store. We ordered our flowers from a wholesaler and my aunt and friends took on all of our floral design.

Our dear friend and wedding planner Sarah Starr created all of the decor for our reception site from estate sales, thrift shops, and family heirlooms. We had countless family members making our assembling, and hand burning our whimsical paper poofs made from coffee filters for months! My mother made the ring bearer pillow, the flower girl basket amongst many other things and I did my bridal parties make-up and up-dos. I loved that everything from the ceremony location, to the place cards, had a memory and significance attached to it. The end result was a whimsical, warm and dreamy celebration that everyone took personal pride in, and much to my husband’s and my delight the ambiance was undeniably communal and cozy.

Alex, the bride, is not new to Ruffled – she was one of our DIY Contest participants (and the winner!) two years ago with this adorbs DIY pom pom bouquet. Today she is back to share a little bit of her wedding day with us:

Alex & Travis

From the bride, Alex: When Travis and I got engaged, we were living in Portland, Oregon. We decided that we wanted to get married in our home state of Michigan, even though it meant planning from thousands of miles away. We did everything we could from there – got our outfits, booked a venue sight unseen, booked our photographer – and then scrambled to get the rest done once we moved back. I am a crafter by nature (and by profession) so of course, that meant I wanted to make EVERYTHING. I ended up giving in and having someone else make my dress (good decision), but I made my headpiece, designed all the paper-bits, made our canopy (if you can call it that) and did all the florals with some help from friends. Our overall “look” was a sort of “antique prettiness mixed with old-timey-natural-science-museum,” complete with dinosaur skeleton cake toppers (a tribute to my husbands dino-geekery. He also wore authentic dinosaur bone cufflinks!)

Alex & TravisAlex & Travis

Alex & Travis

We decided early on that we wanted our wedding to reflect only the things that mattered to us, with little regard for tradition. Instead of walking down the aisle, we had a parade to our outdoor ceremony site, complete with kazoos and other instruments. Our ceremony was extremely short- just a few words by our friend/officiant and an exchange of rings and red string bracelets (which we also handed out to guests.) Then we went inside to have dinner and rock out.

Alex & TravisAlex & Travis

We skipped the special dances and sappy songs, opting to let things unfold naturally- I ended up dancing with my father to “I wear my sunglasses at night”, haha. We hired a photo booth to give people something to do when they got tired of dancing, with some amazing results! Our goal was to create a true celebratory atmosphere, high on love and fun, low on cheesiness, stuffiness, and waiting-around. I think we succeeded :-)

Autumnal Mackinac Island Wedding

DIY Weddings

Photos by:

Coming back from a long weekend in Michigan this past weekend, I couldn’t be happier to share Lindsay and Cole’s wedding shot by Bryan & Mae in Mackinac Island. They incorporated lots of vintage touches throughout their day – from the vintage movie poster table numbers to their stationery. It’s true that we say that the weddings we share are always the sweetest, but Lindsay and Cole’s wedding is one for the books. Their emotions can be seen in the photos and felt through the screen, and we couldn’t help but get a bit teary looking at this photo of their ceremony.

I knew I wanted an autumn wedding – it’s always been my favorite season. Luckily, my husband felt the same way! I also knew I wanted a vintage feel, and once we chose our historic location and venue it all fell into place. We live in Los Angeles but are originally from Michigan, so we wanted to reflect both sides of our lives — the movie business and our Michigan roots. Somehow, we were able to incorporate all of these disparate elements and make it very “us”. Just as important, we wanted the feel of ceremony to be very personal. So, my brother officiated, and we included our bridal party and other friends/family to be part of it in various ways — my cousin sang, we had readings from our favorite books and films, and we passed our rings around for each person to give a “blessing”. It was really special.

Mackinac Island is one of my very favorite places in the world. Growing up, my family would take trips there, and I was always enchanted with the lovely historic island that doesn’t allow cars — you have to bike or horse buggy everywhere. It’s so timeless and romantic. I also love the movie ‘Somewhere in Time’, which is entirely set on the island. So when my husband, who also grew up in Michigan, proposed, it seemed like the perfect location for our wedding. When we toured Mission Point Resort, I fell in love with its elegant rustic charm. We chose to get married in a small hall on the resort grounds with a giant fireplace, to give us that intimate feeling we wanted for us and our guests. The reception was held in a beautiful room in the main hotel, with exposed wood beams and incredible views of the lake. All in all, it was exactly the right setting for us.

I wanted to create an autumn-vintage-rustic-romantic look. We also wanted to incorporate our love of movies and books into the decor. I wasn’t so concerned with everything matching, only that it genuinely reflected who we are — THAT was our “theme”. So we used the tandem bike image on our invitations, welcome bags and menus to tie in the island’s bike culture, but then we designed movie ticket escort cards that went with classic movie table numbers. Our cake toppers include our favorite books.

I wanted colors that complimented the season, but nothing too traditional. I was inspired by the location, and decided to do a palette including yellows and oranges to highlight the changing leaves; cream and grays like the birch trees of Michigan; and then a touch of blue inspired by the beautiful lake. The result was soft, vintage and autumnal.

I really loved doing my DIY projects, which included: my hair piece; decoupaging vintage luggage for our “postcard table” guest book; the “sweet love” banner for the dessert table; the menus and the boutonnieres. My sister-in-law helped me design the programs, welcome bags, escort cards and other design elements. My father-in-law made the wood cake and cupcake stands. I loved that so much of the decor was personal and homemade. Everything else was Etsy and flea mart finds. I don’t know what I would do without Etsy!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Don’t be too concerned with the minutia of planning; it can get overwhelming and make you crazy! It doesn’t matter if everything is perfectly coordinated, as long as you feel it reflects your own unique style and personalities. This will ultimately make the experience more personal, and more beautiful. Also, take time during both the planning and the actual day to really BE with your groom and remember what it’s all about. We can get so distracted with all the fun and stressful details and forget that this is about two people starting an incredible journey together; the rest is frosting. And remember, when things go wrong (and they DO go wrong no matter how much you try to avoid it), take a breath and have a sense of humor about it. It was cold and rainy the day of our wedding and I was bummed — but then the sun came out and we had RAINBOWS! If that’s not a metaphor for life, I don’t know what is :)

Wedding Songs:

We wanted to incorporate our love for movies as much as possible, so all of our songs are movie-related. The guys walked to the “Throne Room March” from Star Wars: A New Hope; the bridesmaids walked to “Storybook Love” from Princess Bride; and I walked down the aisle to the theme from “Somewhere In Time.” Our first dance song was “Come What May” from Moulin Rouge, and my father and I danced to “Rainbow Connection” from the Muppet Movie.

Small Michigan Backyard Wedding

Garden Weddings

You might remember photographer Heather Jowett from this gorgeous ballroom wedding we featured a few months ago. Today she is back to share the most beautiful, down to earth intimate wedding. Ali + Marc are doctors living in Kansas City, but decided to fly back to their hometown of Chelsea in Michigan to have a small celebration with the people that matter most to them. It’s what Heather perfectly titles as a “Backwards Elopement” – they flew back home to get wedded with their close friends and family!

From Heather Jowett: Ali and Marc contacted me because they wanted to do something a little different with their wedding. They’re both doctors in Kansas City, but they had decided that for their marriage ceremony, they wanted to do something special, and intimate, with their closest family. Thus, the backwards elopement was born. The flew from Kansas City to Michigan to get married in the backyard of Ali’s childhood house. In attendance was only the bride and groom, each of their parents, the groom’s brother and his partner, the bride’s grandparents, and myself (well, Ali and Marc’s two adorable pooches were there as well, as is obvious in the pictures).

I’ve been photographing wedding for 6 years, and this was one of the most special things I’ve ever been asked to be a part of.

Most of the details were lovingly handmade by their families. Ali’s father agonized over the placement of the arbor he built for his daughter to get married under. The mothers baked delicious pastries and trimmed hydrangeas from Ali’s mom’s garden. They also conspired from Kansas City to Michigan on how to collect photos for a quilt they were going to surprise Ali and Marc with. Ali’s father even put together their super personalized cake topper, painting the dogs to match.

We all broke bread at the Common Grill in Chelsea, Mi, and while sitting at the table with them, their families made me feel like one of the gang, like I was meant to be there.

To me, what’s special about this wedding are the choices that lead up to it. The couple are both doctors. They could have afforded a lavish wedding in the grandest ballroom with 200 friends, family, and acquaintances in attendance. Instead, they chose to make it about themselves, their commitment, and their families, but at the same time, still make it beautiful.

We’ve shared a few weddings that took place at the Blue Dress Barn in Michigan, and I love how the space transforms every single time. This wedding shot by Simply Jessie Photography and coordinated by Pearls Events is a sweet rustic wedding with all the right details in place. Megan and Jacob gave the infamous red gerbera daisies a fresh twist by placing just one bloom in a small vase in a cluster centerpiece. Love how they strung photobooth strips to represent their long nine year relationship!

Blue Dress Barn was a dream venue highlighting the Midwest and we had a perfect late summer day. Both Megan & Jacob are designers and left no detail undone. The invitations, menus and all paper goods were done by Megan with a pop of red. The guests were greeted by cocktails and delicious appetizers before the ceremony then stood around the two as they became husband and wife. The short ceremony took place on the side of the barn under the arbor. Guests then enjoyed the second cocktail time while celebrating the newlyweds. After the ceremony there was jumping, laughing and dancing that they were married! Dinner was served family style with Midwestern wildflowers on each table. The light in the restored barn was incredible during dinner and the lanterns glowed as the light dropped for the evening. These two love photo-booths as there nine year relationship was strung up and represented by photo strips. Of course they had a photo booth for their wedding! The night ended outdoors with S’mores out by the bonfire.

DIY Howell, Michigan Wedding

I am always giddy to see what Abdi of Three Photographers has in store for us each time I hear from him. To curb my excitement, let’s get straight to the point. Christina and Mike’s farm wedding was a vegan fete filled with delicious handmade touches. And if you had any doubts about brides wearing glasses, Christina’s stylish look may very well convince you how gorgeous they look!

DIY Howell Michigan wedding

From Christina: Choosing the venue was a natural choice – Mike’s sister’s family lives on the beautiful farm and we knew right away it would be the perfect setting for both the ceremony and the reception. They live out in the country in Howell, Michigan. The only thing we had to rent was the tent (the barn was too small for the number of guests we had, though we did use it for the bar/hangout area) and tables/chairs.

Given the setting and our own aesthetic sense, we had a vintage-rustic wedding in mind to fit the mood of the horses, chickens, barns and fields of goldenrod that were our backdrop. We wanted to make sure the feel of our wedding was joyous and celebratory; we wanted every one of our guests to have fun.

We had a rustic countryside look to the wedding, with vintage personal touches like woodland-creature salt & pepper shakers, a tandem bike and hand-painted signs. The color palette was a mason-jar blue, goldenrod yellow and burlap brown. Most every detail of the wedding was DIY; we handmade the invites, bouquets, boutonnieres, signs, bunting, programs, cake-topper… almost everything!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Think of the things that you and your bride/groom love and go from there – and don’t let anyone tell you what you’re “supposed” to do and not do! People want to see the you in your wedding. You won’t regret a thing if you stay true to yourself. Also, buy a short dress – hemming is a racket.

Wedding Songs:

The wedding party came down the aisle to an instrumental (and very pretty) “Vitamin C” by Can. My entrance song was Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie”, and the recessional was “Alone Again Or” by Love (also instrumental). Our first dance was “I Was Made to Love Her” by Stevie Wonder (chosen by my fiancee).

Michigan weddings are close to my heart, and when a beautiful wedding like this lands in my lap I squeal with glee. The gorgeous bride wore an ever so dreamy Claire Pettibone, a mantilla veil with fresh flowers! I spy orange ranunculus and succulents in her hair, doesn’t it look amazing on her? Big thanks to Belle Rempert Photography for sharing this wedding with us.

Michigan Winter Wedding

Vintage Weddings

Photos by:

We just love brides who are able to think far outside of the box. When bride Mariana fell in love with a little coffee shop, she wasn’t afraid to ask the owner if she had considered holding a wedding there. A few months and many creative projects later, Mariana and her groom Brian were exchanging vows at Circa 1843, bringing together Michigan’s charm and Mexican decor. Thanks to Jen Lynne for allowing us to share her photos!

From the bride, Mariana (who also owns Swell Papel on Etsy): The style was definitely inspired from the ideas that I found on Ruffled! I love the personalized feeling of DIY and vintage styles and I thought it would be great for the small wedding I was planning. I knew I wanted lots of luminaries hanging from the ceiling. I also wanted small, subtle hints from Mexico, where I am originally from. I accomplished this by having custom papel picado (cut paper) made by a group of artisans in Puebla, Mexico. The papel picado had our names cut out and were hanging over the reception area like banners.

My husband likes craft beers and so we had a wide variety of brews we enjoy for our guests! I am a total coffee snob so we also had “his and hers” coffee drinks that were prepared by Circa 1843’s barista. Delicious!

My color scheme was the colors of ice cream. I know it sounds silly, but I just love warm vanilla beiges mixed with mint, raspberry, and peach. I love ice cream and it kind of just translated into the colors that I ended up using.

I used the free downloads available on Ruffled and made by Carolynn of Two Brunettes to do the buffet signs, the wedding programs, and the table signs. I used my professional Epson printer that I use for my Etsy print shop, so it was super easy to get quality prints! They turned out great! I loved the little leaf designs. I also made the wedding wreath that hung outside the venue’s main entrance. It took some time and some help from my super creative mom to put the finishing touches on it. My amazing mom also made my bouquet.

Autumnal Michigan Wedding

Rustic Weddings

Photos by:

This fall Michigan wedding embodies the cozy romance of the season perfectly. Her shawl and veil are so classic and the decor is spot-on seasonal. Many hands pitched in to make this romantic affair and all the little details add up to a magical, autumnal wedding day.

From the bride. We envisioned a classic vintage-rustic wedding with a cozy feel. I have a lot of respect for the women of the 1930s-1950s, they were always gorgeous, showing off their assets without being sleazy. I didn’t want it to feel like a stuffy formal event, I wanted everyone to feel like they were just in their backyard with a few good friends celebrating.

Vintage, Rustic, Cozy, and classic. We used all fall colors (oranges, reds, wines, browns) to create something vintage, rustic, cozy and classic. My aunt Lori, the creative genius in my family, hand-painted a few signs and our table numbers, as well as painted Mr and Mrs white pumpkins. She also created all of my place cards, he “happily ever after” sign and table numbers were painted on recycled old barn wood.

My mom, sister, and I dried hydrangeas for the ceremony decorations and created the arrangements that hung on the chairs lining the ceremony aisles. My mom also dried apples and put them in my lanterns as decoration.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? 1)Use the INTERNET, this was my saving grace, if I thought of an idea I would google it and try to find similar ideas to use as inspiration or hints so I wasn’t re-writing the book! 2) Try to use local vendors it usually cuts the price dramatically 3) Choose a Master and Mistress of ceremonies that are organized and handle pressure well. They handle and deal with all the stress that day so you don’t have to! I don’t know what I would have done without my aunt and uncle.

This gorgeous wedding stays very close to my heart being that I got married in Michigan. When I spotted Liz and Chris’ wedding on the Harrison Studio‘s blog, I jumped at the chance of sharing it with you. Liz’s cotton candy Vera Wang wedding dress is just beautiful for words. Thanks to Laura and Ben Harrison of Harrison Studio for the gorgeous photos and Aletha of Pearls Events who helped design and plan such dreamy wedding.

My original vision fell through. We were two students at Michigan State University, planning our wedding in between classes and 3 am burnouts. What resulted was our simple-DIY-ceremony, and chic nighttime celebration where everyone could change and kick back. My fiancé and I have a love for books, so we used love stories in lots of different areas. Pages from Shakespeare’s sonnets and plays were shaped into cones used to hold the tossing rice and handed out to our guests. I also photocopied lines from one of our favorite love poems onto the same cardstock used for our invites, and placed it on our programs. We decided to use kraft paper for our programs since I love the natural color.

I adore rubber stamps, so I couldn’t wait to make our place cards. After I dyed them in coffee, my aunt hand wrote everyone’s names beneath the vintage-looking stamp I found. Then I tied different scraps of ribbon around each hang tag with my maid of honour, so every place card was slightly different.

For wedding favors we decided to make a personalized CD with songs that we both love and songs that really expressed our love. We made a playlist of 19 songs and put them in kraft paper cd cases with our thumbprints stamped in the shape of a heart. We also used a stamp of our names from Etsy seller Note Trunk. On the CD we used our heart thumbprints to personalize it even more.

Chris and I chose “Easier to Be” by Lifehouse for our first dance together. Not only are we old lovers for the band, but the words narrated our feelings for one another.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Don’t let anyone in on your vision until it’s finalized. And when I’d really get hung up on not being able to carry out my ideal vision, I’d remember: I’m getting married. Not wedding-ed. Remember what it’s about.

Alyssa + Howard's Vintage Michigan Wedding

I have a very soft spot for Michigan weddings since I got married in Detroit, so this gorgeous vintage wedding in Ann Arbor makes my heart skip a beat. If that wasn’t enough reason for me to squeal to the point where my neighbors may think I am crazy, Jessica Johnston was the photographer in charge of capturing this wedding. A little side note, she was my very own wedding photographer. So needless to say, I am very excited to share another vintage wedding shot by Jessica and Nate Johnston.

The bride did everything herself, from the wedding cake to the flowers. Alyssa found her vintage wedding dress on eBay and her t strap shoes are Channel. They got married in her parents’ backyard in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The only vendor they hired besides the photographers was the caterer, by Katherine’s Catering. I am blown away with her bouquet. If Alyssa doesn’t own a flower shop, she should definitely consider it!
