Marvimon House Wedding

The Gemmers

It’s no surprise, we’re huge fans of Los Angeles’ Marvimon House. Add two beautiful brides, a little touch of mid-century modern flair, and images from The Gemmers, and you’ve got this beauty of a gem wedding! Whatever you do, don’t miss the wedding film from What We Do Films. So. Sweet.

From bride Leighann: Our vision must have changed a dozen times over the 17 months we were engaged. We ultimately decided on subtle mid-century with natural elements. We wanted something that was simple yet aesthetically pleasing. Neither one of us enjoys being the center of attention so we wanted to throw a big party celebrating our love with the people we love. We are incredibly lucky to have such amazing people in our lives and the day wouldn’t have been possible without all of the love and support we have received from them over the years.

Our wedding was actually dubbed the “Lipster” (lesbian hipster) wedding a couple months prior. The day of, all of our friends were posting photos to instagram and trying to get the hashtag “Lipster” trending. I applaud their effort but it didn’t have the world dominating effect they were going for. Pretty much the entire wedding was handmade. Caitlyn and I spent months crafting… the weekends, after work, any time we had a free moment. I wanted everything to be one-of-a-kind and representative of our personalities and style.

We ultimately decided that a bottle of specially brewed beer would make the perfect thank you gift. If there is one thing we are known for, it’s our love of beer. Coincidentally, Caitlyn’s sisters’ boyfriend recently began home brewing so we asked him to brew 150 bottles for us. For the four months leading up to the wedding, we had all of our friends saving any brown bottles that we could recycle and use for the brew. Again, we used a combo of printing and hand stamping for the labels.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? If you’re planning on going the DIY route, don’t do it purely for monetary reasons. Chances are you’ll end up spending more than you realize trying to do it yourself. Also, just prepare yourself for something to go wrong, and if it does, know that you will most likely be the ONLY person who is aware of it.

Dinner Party Wedding at Marvimon

Holy cow, do I ever love this wedding. As soon as I heard bride Raechel pulled her inspiration from Old Hollywood, glitter, and using local resources, I was hooked! Sarah of Arrow & Apple photographed every bit of Raechel and Jack’s dream wedding day at Marvimon House, one of our perennial favorite wedding venues.

From the bride, Raechel: Our wedding vision was greens, naturals, Old Hollywood and glitter. All though the combination might seem a bit odd together the outcome was amazing. It was also really important that we tried to use local sources as much as possible. We didn’t use any big companies to do anything and felt so proud that we could help keep our money going to local and small businesses (besides our photographer who is in a neighboring state!) We had a lot of DIY projects, partially to save money but also because that’s just who we are. We got some plywood, traced out names in a giant fun font, then cut it out with a jigsaw and glittered it with spray adhesive. It made for a great background in pictures and was an awesome accent on the brick walls of the venue.

We liked the natural feel and look of burlap so we made placemats of burlap for everyone that we thought would look great against the gold chargers and the greenery in the middle. Placemats are something we haven’t really seen at weddings and we wanted to balance the formality of a wedding with an intimate, and casual feel. For the ceremony we wanted something really traditional so we had an actual tying of the knot ceremony which made for great photos and was something some people haven’t seen before (or in a very long time anyway). We hung the knot over the entrance of our doorway as a reminder daily of our wedding and the vows we made to each other! We also wanted something similar to a unity candle but less religious so we did a wishbone breaking ceremony! Everyone was given a plastic wishbones and asked to then break them with their neighbor and make a wish for our new marriage!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? My biggest piece of advice is to have a little extra money even if you’re strict with a budget. We reviewed our budget on a weekly basis and in the end things crept in that I completely forgot about – i.e. wine for our rehearsal dinner! Luckily, we had money coming back to us in the end from security deposits. My second biggest piece of advice which would easily rival with the first is to really write down what you want your wedding to be. Our wedding to us needed to involved only the people we could envision in our future. We absolutely adored our vendors and in the end everyone we worked with was very passionate about making our wedding what we wanted. My brother (bride) was our officiant. It made the ceremony that much more personal for us.

My third piece of advice is to try to sleep. I only got a few hours of sleep the last week before the wedding each night and the moment we checked out on Monday morning from the hotel I was sick as a dog which included being sick on our three week trip to Europe. My fourth and last piece of advice, do not let anyone tell you what your wedding should be. We made our wedding exactly what we envisioned. In the end, everyone told us how personal and unique our wedding was because we stayed true to our own wedding vision.

We’re kicking this weekend off with the perfect injection of color, thanks to the fantastic Sloan Photographers and the glorious Marvimon House. A bit of glitter, a touch of fuchsia and orange, and one of the sweetest first looks you’ll see (we guarantee it), you’ll love this wedding as much as we do!

From the bride, Missy: I wanted our wedding to be colorful and fun. I wanted to use Bauer Pottery and the bright flowers that were in season. We wanted everyone to have a fun relaxed time. We had great food from Heirloom, and wine from SilverLake Wine.

I wanted it to be festive, fun colorful and personal. I did not want it to be too quirky, but wanted it to express our tastes and humor. We had our friend make a cut where you could put your face through it and get your picture taken. I wanted to use local vendors for everything. I had a tremendous help from friends. I was into using orange and bright fuchsia, and the colors of the Bauer pottery, which are bright and very California.

We have lived in LA a long time, and wanted an downtown wedding, but with the lovely outdoor Spring element that is also part of LA. Marvimon had both of those. They have the loveliest outdoor succulent garden and ceremony area. The reception was inside, so no one had to get in the car and drive to another site. They were super friendly and helpful the day of. We had a day-of coordinator, who we could not have done it without. He came from Marvimon, so was familiar with everything and we had several meetings before hand.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? There are a lot of things to juggle. If you need help, and can afford it, get a coordinator, at least day-of one. It is a lot, and you don’t want to worry on the wedding day if something goes wrong, and something will…. it always does.

My husband is a composer, so he wrote music for a cello duet that we walked in the processional and recessional. Our first dance was to a Bright Eyes song.

Starting with the bride Jen’s vintage Chanel ring, all the way to their collected vintage silver centerpieces, this wedding shot by Brandon Kidd is a stunner from end to end. Jen and Moe wanted two opposite styles for their wedding: one wanted a vintage-inspired with a romantic feel; the other, a sleek urban theme. They blended both of their styles perfectly balancing feminine and masculine. Love!

I wanted something slightly vintage, Moe wanted something modern, and we both wanted an urban city feel. So we tried to incorporate each of those things into a cohesive overall look and feel. Most importantly we wanted something fun and celebratory instead of formal and programmed. So we made sure that whatever we decided, in the end everyone would walk away feeling like they participated in the day and had the best time.

The tarnished silver pieces that were used on the tables for our florals were our favorite detail. It took us a year to collect over 130 pieces that were used throughout the wedding. We had so much fun going to flea markets and antique stores to find them. It was a lot of work and many people thought we would give up, but we pushed through and collected them all. Now we have more then we will ever need but each piece means so much to us because it was something we did together.

How did the two of you make the wedding day your own? It was really important to us that everything we choose to have in the wedding meant something to us. In regards to décor we searched for and found all of the tarnished silver centerpiece vessels, guest book table and table assignment props. We wanted to recognize both of our families so we framed and set out pictures of our parents and grandparents wedding photos – which we discovered there were no divorces in either family – so we wanted to recognize that. Since I am a Catering Manager at a hotel, we chose a real hotel register that we found on etsy as our Guest Book. All 300 pages were completely filled with guest names and room numbers from he years 1955-1957. Many of our family and friends have been affected by cancer, so we donated a small amount to the American Cancer Society in honor of each guests and printed the note on seed paper. Moe is Persian, so to incorporate his beliefs we had his family make a Sofreh Table for us.

We definitely did not want a big cake and liked the idea of a fun dessert table. So we went with a simple and small two tiered cake to cut, with an assortment of small desserts for our guests that included cake pops, mini pies and tarts. My favorite part of the wedding cake was the cake topper that my mom hand made for us. She sewed the wedding dress and suit by hand and designed the entire top. She also sewed the “love sweet love” banner that hung at the dessert table.

Any advice for those planning now? Do it the way that you want to, no matter how traditional or non-traditional. It is your day and no one else’s. You don’t need a huge budget to create a personal and enjoyable event. The most important thing is that you both have fun and make sure your enjoy the day, your guests, your food, your music and each other – and don’t worry about the little things.
