Modern Geo Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

There’s nothing that’s more impressive than when vendors brainstorm to design a shoot that has us enthralled with the creativity and talent they have. Shelley K Photography and Haley Hueckman did just that and what came from their collaboration is quite amazing. One of the things that we’ve learned is that if there’s anywhere that a black wedding dress can work so well, this shoot has proved to us it’s in the desert, paired with the most eye-catching flowers by Bramble & Brass and those sultry jewel tones.

From the photographer, Shelley K Photography: This modern geometric wedding editorial took place in the high desert region of eastern Oregon. The shoot was styled with a love of geometry and equilateral shapes as well as deep jewel tones. The jewel tones paired beautiful with the neutral backdrop of the landscape and created great contrast. We also wanted to step outside the box with a black wedding dress. All florals were foraged locally in eastern Oregon.

Like brides, grooms are most certainly entitled to jazz up their wedding day threads. Classic tuxedo jacket styles in black or cream are always a winner, but picking out a navy blue, ruby red, or even emerald green tuxedo jacket will be sure to wow everyone. Mixing and matching different prints are another fun way to show your sartorial skills, like this groom who dressed up his casual linen blue jacket with a diamond-print bowtie. Quite snazzy to say the least!

Cutting open sweet-smelling citrus fruits like these and displaying them in and around your wedding tables are a fun way to dress up your tablescapes if they’re in need of more styling. They add brilliant pops of color and an even bigger plus is that they smell divine!

As a graphic designer, I believe that great graphic design is in the details {read: spending lots of time at the computer looking at pixels.} If you dont know what a pixel is- congratulations- because that’s why graphic designer types exist! {to save your eyesight} Really, though-design is more than matching colors and picking pretty fonts {but I do have major love for fonts} – it’s about conveying your message to the world with a swirl, a flourish, a dot, a pattern- whatever it takes to creatively encompass your clients vision and send that vision out into the world with impact.

That’s what I try to do. EMPHASIS on TRY. I adore designing and am currently the owner of NOTEDOCCASIONS.COM , an online site catering to everyone who loves having a party. And who doesn’t because as I see it, life’s a party!

From the event designer, Lorrie of Maui’s Angels: We have been dying to do a shoot with the ever so talented Sunya’s flowers and after months and months of trying the stars sure did align. And oh my how they aligned perfectly with Danielle Poff Photography who graced our presence while here on our beautiful island. The theme was more that of an organic bohemian elegance so what better way to embrace this than shooting our gorgeous model, clad in a customized Joelle Perry masterpiece, in the lush forest at the Honolua Bay Reserve?

The tablescape created was fit for a queen and adorned with hand picked vintage pieces from Sunya’s very own collection along with a multi-hued palette of deep jewel toned flowers. We enlisted the delectable talents of Cake Fanatics who created the mini naked cakes and chocolate covered desserts. And the masterfully crafted flower hair halo styled perfectly by Satin and Sand Maui? Marvelous! Thank you again to all of our amazing vendors for coming out to play in the forest with us. I will keep this one close to my heart!

Modern Turbine Hall Wedding

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Kikitography

Throughout the years, one of the color palettes we’ll continue to love is grey and yellow. Somehow this mix always seems to conjure up a modern aesthetic, and that’s certainly the case for Mariè-Louise and Brad’s wedding photographed by the lovely Kikitography. Khali Collins of The Wedding Specialist was on hand to bring the couple’s vision to life, including every type of yellow bloom for a fresh tablescape setting!

Modern Turbine Hall wedding - photo by Kikitography http://ruffledblog.com/modern-turbine-hall-wedding

From the bride, Mariè-Louise: When we began planning the many aspects of our special day, we looked to the internet for inspiration. We came across a lot of Vintage themed ideas, but didn’t fall in love with it. We decided to swap the trending country/vintage wedding for a JHB city center wedding with a lot of contrast Bright yellow tulips and soft candle light against the harsh but striking concrete and steel building where we had both the ceremony and reception. We wanted modern and fresh but more importantly, different! Daring, but it paid off in every way!

We did a JHB skyline theme throughout our stationery and decided to use famous JHB street names for table names in stead of numbers. Our color scheme was yellow and grey, ranging from charcoal to dove greys. Contrast was important to us and we wanted the day to truly reflect us – a city couple.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? There’s so much advise to give! Chief of which for us was to stay true to what we wanted. It is very easy to end up with someone else’s dream day, simply because suppliers don’t always listen to what the couple wants. There are so many ideas out there, going into a meeting with a planner not knowing what you want can sometimes lead to a couple walking out feeling completely overwhelmed and confused by it all. Make a list of things you are unwilling to compromise on, and another list that indicates what you are willing to be guided on in terms of different options available. It’s never an exact science, but it will help both parties if you have guidelines and pictures to work with. If you don’t like something, be honest. Don’t go along with it just because you feel you’ll be wasting someone’s time. You pay for it – you have to be happy with it! At the same time, accept that everything won’t be 100% on the day. Truth be told, it’s not about the ring, the dress, the flowers. It’s about your commitment to each other. No one will know if the cake should have been slightly to the left on the table, so don’t sweat the small stuff. Pick bridesmaids that you know won’t let you down. It’s important for you to feel you can leave things in their hands without having to check on them constantly. Sure, it’s nice to have all your friends up there with you, but my advice is to ditch the friends that you know have an unreliable streak. Leading up to the day you want to be able to delegate tasks that you just won’t have time for. Yes, you love your drama queen friend, but it’s your day – you don’t want to share the attention with anyone! This tactic saves money as well – less bridesmaids dresses to budget for!

French Castle Wedding

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Joyeuse Photography

As soon as I hear “French castle wedding,” my mind immediately drifts to fairy tales. Maïwenn and Benjamin’s wedding isn’t far off from a fairy tale with a lace wedding gown designed to wow, a lofty party in Le Château de la Colaissière, and a veritable treasure trove of French desserts (including a cake set on fire with sparklers!) all captured beautifully by Joyeuse Photography.

From the bride, Maïwenn: We just wanted a day that was like us — young, happy, with plenty of laughs (and a little bit retro because I love “Les années folles”). We decided to say “I Do” in the middle of winter. So, for more cheerfulness, it was fun to create a dress code for our guests. Attendees were asked to wear red, yellow, or pink, and all our decorations were based on these 3 colors.

From the photographer, Tahni of Joyeuse Photography: Maïwenn and Benjamin are pretty creative and unique and wanted an interesting spin on their wedding. They got married in a church and had their reception in a castle outside of Nantes and had a bit of a nostalgia theme going on. All their tables were themed by “bandes dessinées” – which are comic/graphic books from France or Belgium. They got married on Valentine’s Day and their colors were pink, red, and yellow and had all their guests dress in those colors (and wear hats!). They also had cootie catchers- those games you played as a child with the folded paper thingies. Also, their wedding cake lit on fire – on purpose! PS – the Rolls Royce that escorted us around was Brad Pitt’s! Ha!

Kaaterskill NY Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

Lev Kuperman

“I’m not really sure the style of it… eclectic communal farmhouse boho chic? It was a giant love fest for sure, and that is what we wanted.” How could we possibly resist a wedding with a description this good? Kayti and Jake’s wedding is a perfect example of just how gorgeous eclecticism can be, especially when the talented Lev Kuperman is behind the camera.

Kaaterskill NY wedding - photo by Lev Kuperman http://ruffledblog.com/kaaterskill-ny-wedding

From the bride, Kayti: We really wanted a laid back, fun, outdoor weekend wedding celebration. One thing that was important to us was that it felt communal. We had a great venue where we had the run of the property for 3 days basically, so we wanted to use that. Everything we planned was outdoors, so we really wanted to incorporate that into the style. We were so excited about having our family and friends all together and wanted them to feel a part of the wedding. I’m not really sure the style of it… eclectic communal farmhouse boho chic? It was a giant love fest for sure, and that is what we wanted. A few groups went zip lining with me the day before the wedding while others were at the property hanging out and settling in. We had the meet-n-greet family style dinner on the property followed by a screening of “Dirty Dancing” in the barn. We had morning yoga in the barn the day of the wedding and then everyone stayed and helped set up. It was amazing ow much everyone gave. It blew me away and taught me to always give, give, give. Another example of how we included people was our wedding parties. We created new ones. We each had 3 “best people” that stood by our sides, and we had “people of honor” which was a larger group of about 20 people. The ladies wore white and the men wore chambray ties. They walked down the aisle but sat during the ceremony. We did this because we have a lot of important people in our lives. The three that stood by our sides were just right but we wanted to incorporate more and really honor how influential our friends and families have been in our relationship and our lives.

I basically took anything and everything I loved and threw it in the mix. My theme ended up being mishmash world traveler eclectic boho thrift store Americana? I love lots of colors and patterns and particularly love mixing colors and patterns, as well as clean white. I like to juxtapose and mix things up that don’t go. And I like to combine everything. Instead of one, why not two? I had 6 different save the date postcard styles, two different favor bags, 3 different table runner fabrics, etc. and it all worked! I love hot pink (I try not, but I can’t help it) so I threw that in wherever I could. There was denim, corals, blues, greens, purples, yellows… really a huge mix. I found a lot of the pieces in thrift shops, at garage sales, and online. As for DIY… almost everything was DIY! My mom made all the table runners. For the head table, we found this amazing Argentinian fabric on etsy. For the other tables, some were denim table runners and the others were a striped fabric. My mom made pocket squares for all the men and I embroidered their initials in them. The favors were DIY also. I ordered sage sticks and custom matches and tucked in a smashed penny into each sage stick. That was put into a muslin bag that was then stamped.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? 1. Hire a day of planner. Seriously. Everyone told me to, and I thought about it. Thought I had one (venue coordinator and day of coordinator are not the same thing!) I had tons of people who did help on the day. However, I had been planning this for a year. Everything was in my head. I couldn’t be everywhere at once and get ready to get married! 2. No one can prepare you for this. I don’t say that to scare anyone. I don’t say it negatively. But the rush, the day, the emotions, the whirlwind, the people, the schedule. It all happens so fast, is so amazing, and there is no real way to prepare for that. Take some time alone and take some time with your partner on the day. And also, try try try to say hello to each guest. It’s harder than you think. 3. Ladies… eyelash extensions. They changed my life for 1 week. I got them 3 days before my wedding. You wake up looking amazing. Every day. And for the wedding day… insane. I highly recommend it. 4. Remember what it is all about — you and your partner coming together and starting a life. It is all about love. You will fight. It will get stressful. But find beauty in it and really be in the moments. Try not to get sucked into pinterest. Take some time with your partner that is “wedding free” time. 5. Take a honeymoon, mini moon, or a weekend away right after. Immediately after. Just do it. 6. Break the rules. Do what makes sense for you and your partner. Honor family and traditions, but if you want to do something a little different, do it! And make the ceremony part meaningful. That doesn’t mean it has to be really long, but it is such an important part! We had readings, a song… our friend and a rabbi both officiated. We wrote our own vows… put meaning into that part. It can get overlooked. 7. Love love love love love… and breathe.

Custom invitation design requests are always welcome – we welcome the opportunity to make your event absolutely perfect!
