Springtime Greenhouse Wedding Inspiration

Engagement Sessions, Wedding Design

Photos by:

Martina Wendland

When you’re in Canada and the winters can be a bit harrowing, it’s time to put your creativity to work and come up with wedding inspiration that oozes springtime warmth. Martina Wendland and The Creative Details drew their design from greenhouses while tying in classic wedding flair with a dreamy palette of blues, grays, and cream tones. One thing to certainly have on the list was an abundance of greenery and La Petite Fleur provided that and beautiful arrangements of roses, lilacs, and ferns. It’s amazing what you can dream up when you’re wishing for spring!

From the photographer, Martina Wendland: The Great North blesses us with some seriously long winters… time to hunker down by the fire and plan and dream of all things spring. The Creative Details & I put together this styled greenhouse inspiration with these words in mind: organic, classic, styled simply, pretty, garden + fresh. We had an amazing group of vendors and thoroughly enjoyed putting together wedding inspiration in a spot we all dream of some day hosting a wedding – the perfect early-spring escape from our sometimes late-to-arrive mild weather. Decked in row upon row of ferns, succulents, and blooms, the greenhouse hosted our whimsical + live wedding display.

Botanical Garden Wedding with Glass Ceilings

Garden Weddings

It’s no secret that greenhouse weddings are, well, kind of my thing. It just so happens that Planterra Conservatory is the queen mother of all greenhouses, complete with the most incredible glass ceilings we’ve seen in a while! Kelly Sweet Photography captured every bit of Melissa and Sean’s lush botanical wedding day.

From the bride, Melissa: Sean and I live in Baltimore, Maryland and got engaged in Ocean City in October 2014. He proposed in the ocean, on one knee, and his exact words were, “Honey, let’s take the plunge!” and then dunked both our bodies under water. He didn’t have a ring at the time, so we walked along the beautiful boardwalk and bought a simple silver claddagh ring to honor Sean’s Irish heritage. A few weeks later, my Grama generously offered us a diamond that her mother had given her — my great grandmother — and together Sean and I bought a beautiful antique-looking setting. Sean’s ring — this huge turquoise and silver thing — is a real treasure. He didn’t want a traditional wedding band, and found something that would suit him better at (of all places!) a pawn shop in downtown Detroit. He was with my dad at the time, and it was a nice bonding experience for the two of them.

Fast forward to November 2014: Sean and I got married in a gorgeous, high-ceilinged greenhouse in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where my parents and family live. The setting was very romantic: lots of lush, organic florals in rich berry hues and long family-style tables for friends and family. My bouquet and chuppah (the traditional Jewish wedding canopy) were made of delicate pale pinks and creams with wild flowy greenery thrown in for balance.

Our ceremony was so special. Sean is Irish Catholic and I’m Jewish, and our Rabbi and Cantor did a wonderful job weaving together our two traditions and backgrounds. I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of “Falling Slowly” played by a string quartet. Rabbi Yedwab incorporated words and stories that Sean and I had written about each other, so the words felt so intimate and genuine. All our guests feel welcome, and our personalities stood out alongside traditional Jewish prayers and traditions. I remember thinking to myself towards the end of the ceremony, “When will everyone stop talking so I can KISS MY HUSBAND?!” It was a wonderful moment in time. Hopeful and full of love and joy.

After the ceremony guests feasted on specialty cocktails, a simple, rustic menu, and wedding cake from Sweet Heather Anne. Our band, The Persuasion, played a great version of “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole for our first dance. Our little cousins, nieces, and nephews wanted in on our first dance, so I picked one of the little flower girls up to dance with us. Sean got jealous and said, ‘You’re my wife and this is our first dance and I’d like you to myself for a few moments.” Ha! The band had the entire crowd of 150 out of their seats and dancing all night. At the end of the evening my bridesmaids and I changed into our street clothes and danced to an iPod. Sean and I felt so incredibly supported and loved and cherished, and will think fondly of our wedding day forever. We’re expecting a baby next year — and the due date is right around our wedding date! Who knows… we may have a little baby bundle to love on our first wedding anniversary!

Swedish American Hall Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

One of my favorite color palettes for weddings has always been green and white. There’s something so organic and natural about the way the colors play off each other, and after seeing this wedding photographed by Sun and Life Photography you’ll know exactly what I mean. Thanks to Danielle Amato of The Box for her skilled coordinating and Chestnut and Vine for their absolutely amazing floral designs!

Swedish American Hall wedding - photo by Sun and Life Photography http://ruffledblog.com/swedish-american-hall-wedding

From the bride, Lindsay: Early in our relationship we worked as tour guides in San Francisco, developing a love of the city, it’s history, and each other. When we told the old tour company that we were getting married, a couple of our favorite tour bus drivers offered to take an open top double decker bus out as our transportation for the day. Wind swept hair be damned it was worth it! Picking a concept sucked! After crying about whether we were “book-y”, “forest-y”, or “vintage-y” enough to define a whole wedding around, we just said eff it and aimed at throwing a great party – rocking music, delicious drinks, a location with atmosphere, laughs, tears, great outfits; something unexpected.

The Victorian living room backdrop was inspired from the Victorian houses of San Francisco and from a picture wall “photo booth” the bride saw on Pinterest. Luckily the father of the bride is carpenter and had built sets for plays in the past, so he was able to bring it to life. He handmade the crown molding, sourced cloth as the wall paper, and collected family photos from both sides. It was an unexpected surprise when after the ceremony, the family went back up to the stage, went behind the wall and opened up the biggest pictures turning the backdrop into a photo booth.

Even while we constructed exactly what we wanted to experience, we tried to keep all our guests’ comfort in mind, young and old. Though remarkably we got away with everything, no one complained about a thing – string metal during the ceremony, Danzig as the mother’s dance, parking at the funeral home next door, burgers for dinner, circus bands at the after party, throwing a concert in the venue downstairs after the “official wedding” so all of our friends and acquaintances could crash. In the end, the families loved the weirdness. Go for it, your family will be more understanding than you’d think.

Oatlands Plantation Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Love by Serena

Between the two of them, Sarah of Sarah Park Events and Love By Serena have so much talent that we’re just a bit speechless. Who else could serve up this inspiration shoot filled with such breathtakingly gorgeous accents and details? Let’s jump into some serious pretty:

From the designer, Sarah of Sarah Park Events: With Spring just around the corner, our vision for this shoot was to use bright colors and bring the outdoors in. Having that vision in mind, the greenhouse at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens in Leesburg, VA was the best venue to bring our vision to life.

The history behind the greenhouse is just amazing and you can see that through the photos. The old exposed brick walls was one of our favorite spots to take bridal portraits, very romantic and filled with lots of character. Our color inspiration came from the greenhouse itself so we were able to use a lot of fun and bright colors. The great thing about having events at greenhouses is that the weather can be cold and snowy outside but the inside will always be warm and colorful. We had to brave an icy cold day that day but I am extremely happy with how everything turned out and I can’t thank my vendors enough!

New Zealand Garden Wedding

Vintage Weddings

I think I just might have fallen for this couple a bit when reading their story. Erin and Grant had a laissez-faire attitude when it came to planning their wedding, accepting that things may come together a little differently than their initial vision. Photographers A Couple of Night Owls were on hand, along with quite a few cans of silly string to keep the kiddies happy!

bride and groom

From the bride, Erin: When Grant asked me to marry him, I thought he was joking. Not because marriage is something that should be joked about (balls and chains are never a laughing matter), but because the proposal was so relaxed, understated and so him that I thought it was to get a laugh. Which sums us up in a nutshell: goobers. And we tried our best to bring that into our day in as many ways as possible.

Like a good bride, I started a Pinterest board, ordered a Topshop dress online that turned out to be too small in the butt region for me and used the wedding money to buy a house. All in the name of fun. I organised the big things like catering, a singing man, the celebrant, the ceremony venue and a scout marquee for the backyard and then took a break to move house and take a week’s holiday to Rarotonga that was booked before the rest of the crazy.

None of the details really turned out as what we thought they would look like. We had a vision, would start executing and as things wouldn’t work or were deemed to difficult, we’d change tact. Which was super fun, but we didn’t really know what everything would actually look like until it was done. We bought glasses, teaspoons and side plates from op shops, spray painted plastic animals and made clouds. We really wanted to create a chilled out vibe where everyone could relax and have a laugh so we had outdoor games after the ceremony and a pub quiz to kick off the reception. May I recommend cans of crazy string if you plan to have children at your wedding. It was a massive hit with the under 10’s.

My favourite part of the day was sitting down in the marquee and watching. Everyone was laughing and mingling and Grant and I had a wee chat about how many rad people we know. So many! We just about injured ourselves laughing on the dance floor. A wedding’s not a wedding without some sweet shape cutting and people didn’t hold back with their rad dance moves. Sharing’s caring.

To all the upcoming brides – try and make everything as simple as possible. There are so many thing’s going on that simple will save the day. And when in doubt, make clouds and watch the unfortunate dress scene in Bridesmaids on repeat with wine and chocolate. It puts everything in perspective.

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

AGAiMAGES

Two striking brides, a reception in a botanical garden, storybook-perfect images from AGAiMAGES: all of these make this Brooklyn wedding one of our all-time faves! Anja and Kellye’s wedding day was full of lush red flowers from Peartree Flowers, impeccable style, and last-minute lucky weather. Let’s hear it for the newlyweds!

brooklyn botanical wedding

From the photographer, AGAiMAGES: Anja and Kellye really wanted their ceremony to be outside, but because the North East is pretty unpredictable in the fall, it was all up in the air. However, on their wedding day, beautiful soft clouds gave the best possible light and they could have their dream ceremony outside in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The emotional and beautiful ceremony that made most if not all guests’ eyes tear up followed by afternoon reception in the Palm house.

From the bride Kellye: Brooklyn, New York is our city of love. We had our first dates in Park Slope and Coney Island. We spent weekends flopped on blankets in Prospect Park and bar-hopping in Williamsburg. We moved in together in Prospect Heights and built our life. We wanted our wedding to pull from that sense of place. The natural beauty of Brooklyn’s parks, the comfort of its classic Brownstone-lined streets, the hip edginess of its diverse thoughts, creativity and people.

We wanted to bring all the beauty of Brooklyn and autumn to our guests. So we looked for inspiration regarding colors in the fall foliage. For flowers we drew on the natural setting of the park with arrangements that were luscious and dramatic, but not too ornate or manicured. Food consisted of delicious favorites using local ingredients. We wanted the photography to be candid and capture the natural surroundings and raw emotions of the day, which it did perfectly!

We wanted everyone enjoy some elegance and celebrate, but also keep things simple enough that all was pleasurable and at ease. For us, it was a perfect day.

We just adore the ingenuity of this couple’s wedding planning process — tired of the same old reception foods and choices, Ashley and Dylan chose some of their favorite foods and drinks for their post-ceremony party, including some sparkling Izze drinks. We’re delighted by how well the drinks tied into the overall theme of the wedding, adding little pops of color around the day! Every gorgeous image was captured by Alixann Loosle who is sharing them with us.

brightly colored drinks

From the bride, Ashley: Our theme was elegant yet simple with a colorful vintage touch. We chose a couple of elements to focus our efforts on that gave it a personal touch. The bride’s mom, grandma, and aunts spent countless afternoons hunting for the collection of vintage vases that were used for centerpieces and around the reception. I loved that each vase was unique and it was so fun to mix and match them to give each table a eclectic, yet uniform and simple look that let the gorgeous flowers shine.

Also, I loved that the pom garland gave the reception a fun pop of color. It was a DIY project by my mother. A big effort, but it gave it a pop of color without having too many decorations. Also, I am glad we splurged a little on the gold chiavari chairs. It was worth the extra money since they actually added an element of elegance to the decor so it was kind of a two for one. Something that was important to us was to have the food represent what we love to eat instead of just having the typical wedding reception food. We love finding new pizza restaurants so having wood fired pizza, Izze sodas, and his and her desserts was a perfect representation of us and what we like.
