Simply White Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Studio EMP

For me, there’s nothing more calming than an all-white color palette. Studio EMP and Found Vintage Rentals recently gathered to showcase some of Found’s beautiful rental pieces, accenting them with soft ivory blooms, white pumpkins, and neutral linens for a look that’s totally monochrome and striking in its simplicity.

From Found Vintage Rentals: Benjamin Moore announced Simply White as 2016 color of the year, and we’re not at all mad about it! There is something very relaxing about an all white palette that we just can’t get enough of. So pull up a cozy European homespun linen bench, unpack Grandma’s heirloom crystal, and fill ironstone vessels with blooms of white, and enjoy a cozy Christmas dinner around our Domaine Table. Simply (perfectly) White.

Fantastic Mr Fox Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Sarah & Ben

Here at Ruffled we’re longtime fans of all things Wes Anderson, so we were delighted to see that photographers Sarah & Ben share the same love! They put together a truly incredible styled shoot inspired by Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, bringing along Ever After Vintage Weddings for event design and 2Birds Events on floral design.

From the photographers, Sarah & Ben: As huge Wes Anderson fans, this project was a total labor of love for us and we are so happy with how everything came together! We adore how perfectly so many of the details from the movie worked their way into the details, from the cider jug to the blueberry favors, down to the fact the the ever so amazing Oh Hello Events even included Mrs. Fox’s dress pattern as the invitation liner!

We found a perfect forest to shoot in, with tons of pine needles pulling in the fall feeling color palette of the movie (which is hard to find here in Florida!) and Ever After Vintage Weddings did a beautiful job of setting up an intimate feast in the forest. Then, just when our hearts felt like they could burst from the stunning sight of it all, things were kicked up another notch with amazing florals from 2Birds Events (this bouquet is fall perfection!) and a unique two bun up-do for the bride that had us squealing with excitement. There really is no other word for this shoot but fantastic :)

Blue Ridge Mountain Anniversary Session

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Tulle & Grace

Today’s shoot from Tulle & Grace takes a simple formula — a darling couple in love, an eye-catching gown, and show-stopping scenery — and makes it absolutely shine. It’s an absolutely perfect anniversary shoot for fall, and we have no doubt it will inspire all you autumn brides out there planning your big day now. Of course, we have to mention the flowers from Forage & Fleur, because that wild bouquet is truly the stuff of dreams.

From the photographer, Whitney of Tulle & Grace: Inspired by the colors of fall, we helped our lovely couple celebrate their anniversary among the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. Brass Town Bald is the highest point in Georgia and the views from the top are some of the most stunning around!

Crisp Autumn Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Debbie Lourens

It’s getting chillier and chillier with every day, so we know it’s the perfect time to share this beautiful inspiration shoot from Debbie Lourens, Blank Canvas, and Leipzig. It’s ideal for that time of the year where autumn is gently lapsing into winter, where there are still enough lovely flowers to pick but there might also be specks of snow floating around. And can we talk about that incredible headpiece?

crisp autumn wedding inspiration - photo by Debbie Lourens http://ruffledblog.com/crisp-autumn-wedding-inspiration

From the photographer, Debbie Lourens: We were inspired by the movie ‘Frozen’ and using that as our starting point our idea began to evolve into a whimsical shoot that celebrates all things snow and frost. We chose our models loosely based upon the theme of the blonde ice queen and her red-head sister and we accessorised them with crystals and feathers and layers of snow. Our colour scheme included warm, as well as cold colours to provide a rich, textural palette and to bring depth into the icy winter wonderland we were aiming to create. The wonderful indigenous plants and flowers we used gave an amazing South African spin to the fairytale and the use of raw wood made us think of a mysterious forest covered in snowflakes.

Autumn Wedding Inspiration in Ireland

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Paula O'Hara

The team behind today’s shoot, including Paula O’Hara, SALT Styling, and The Informal Florist, had a brilliant idea of bringing in a positively lush setting to their venue, a once dilapidated stable courtyard. The result is a look that’s refreshingly modern, while simultaneously celebrating all that the autumn season has to offer.

autumn wedding inspiration in Ireland - photo by http://www.paulaohara.com/ http://ruffledblog.com/autumn-wedding-inspiration-in-ireland

From the event designer, Jen of SALT Styling: The balance of nature can be seen in the everyday wonders that surround us. The concept of yin & yang is based on elements in nature which complement their opposing differences. Invite this principle into your decor; from asymmetrical blooms, a neutral muted palette to a rolling lush green landscape. With that in mind, this inspiration shoot was held in the serene surroundings of The Stables, a once dilapidated stable courtyard, set in the surroundings of the historical Newcastle Demesne Estate, where we curated the finest artisans to bring this concept to life.

With their olfactory blends of sweet summer roses and honey infused blackberry scaibosa, these asymmetrical blooms were the primary focal point to this stunning table-scape. To further tie-together this autumnal fete, a spread of delectable treats; infused with matcha green tea and topped with salted white chocolate ganache, were the perfect accompaniment for guests waiting to be seated. What better way to wash down such fancy fare then with a gin fizz cocktail, before the gathering at the ceremony?

Handcrafted Fall Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Kellie Rae Studio

Have we mentioned how much we love fall? We have? Well, you’ll probably hear it from us a few more times because we’re just so excited for this cooler weather and the excuse to cuddle up under a blanket with a warm mug of tea. This shoot from Kellie Rae Studio jumps right into some of the best parts of fall, and implements fantastic ideas for all you do-it-yourself brides out there. We absolutely love the pistachio shell flowers made by Kellie!

handcrafted fall wedding inspiration - photo by Kelly Rae Studio http://ruffledblog.com/handcrafted-fall-wedding-inspiration

From the photographer, Kellie Rae Studio: We’ve all seen a TON of DIY weddings lately, which is SO awesome! But, I just wanted to show that it’s totally possible to produce something way uniquely beautiful and do it all yourself. I also think it’s easy for DIY to be overdone and expensive. I wanted this shoot to look effortless, but detailed all while being something totally doable and a smaller budget. Also, can we please share pistachio flowers that are not only totally adorable but also really fun to make? Because who doesn’t love an instant snack during crafting?

I guess this isn’t all done by me, because I can’t sew this super adorable dress which is from Rent the Runway. The pie toppers were something I came across on etsy and just had to have. I found a tree that had to be chopped in the woods behind my house, grabbed a chainsaw and cut some pieces from it for the centerpiece. Only almost cut my hand off once. The plates, silverware (well, goldware), and the candles are thrifted from Savers and Goodwill. The pine cones smell like Christmas and are from Michaels. So is the gold spray paint that I used a ton of!

The bouquet includes the pistachio flowers I made, as well as some pine cones I glued in there. I stopped on the side of the road and grabbed some of the ornamental grass that has taken over the ditch and included that in the bouquet as well. Wrapped it up and called it good! The couple, they aren’t actually engaged, but I really think they should be. Nick’s clothes came from his closet, nothing needed to be bought for this. Bailey, the model, did her own hair and makeup. Oh, and they brought their dog. I, personally, think more dogs need to be involved in weddings. They’re so cute!

A Southern Winter Wedding with Jewel Tones

Wedding Design

Something about jewel tones and the autumn season just make them perfect for each other, don’t you think? This creative team of Ashley Slater Photography, Michaela Noelle Designs, and Lindsay Coletta Designs certainly seem to think so, and we agree. Deep and dramatic floral design merges with rich berry hues to create an absolutely magical wedding inspiration shoot!

A Southern Winter Wedding with Jewel Tones - photo by Ashley Slater Photography http://ruffledblog.com/a-southern-winter-wedding-with-jewel-tones

From the event designer, Michaela Noelle: Deep berry hues mixed with feminine gold touches, whimsically designed floral arrangements with plenty of greenery, vintage china carrying out our color story, the most elegant chandelier, a dessert bar unlike anything we’ve ever seen, a romantic and flowy gown, and a stunning bride and groom who share a sweet love story. This is what our romantic, wintery inspiration shoot was made of. When we dream up the inspiration shoots for The Bloom Workshop guests to practice photographing and styling, our goal is to create something exceedingly gorgeous, different from what a bride might choose for her actual wedding day, and put together a story that is filled with unique, tiny details (perfect for the prettiest of detail shots!).

My personal favorite color is purple, but it’s often hard to find an elegant way to incorporate this hue into design schemes. The right shade is key! Because we wanted to design a scheme suited for both Fall and Winter, a deep plum and berry-purple seemed perfectly appropriate. I kept calling the palette “berry”, so from there we came up with a berry inspiration shoot, adorned with edible and delicious varieties of berries, seen in many aspects of the design. From blackberries dripping from our main floral centerpiece, to raspberries and more blackberries gracefully draping off every square inch of our dessert bar, it certainly was a shoot filled with inspiration. Each of the artists involved in the day poured their heart into their portion of the design. I loved how the two set ups (the dining table and dessert bar) complimented one another, by tying in the gold and berry elements, in the most beautiful of ways. A bold color palette is worth the risk, especially when paired with soft details!

Late Fall Wedding Ideas with a Cider Bar

Wedding Design

What’s chilly weather without hot apple cider? We’re thrilled to share with you this inspired inspiration shoot from Cyrience Creative Studios and Natalie Trento, who mixed plaid fabrics with copper, blues, and apples for a photo shoot that perfectly embodies the cold weather spirit. We love the idea of having stemware suspended over the cider bar with ribbon, so each guest can cut down their own glass!

From the event designer, Natalie Trento: Fall in New York is an amazing time of year, so we designed this stylized shoot to capture some of our absolute favorite autumn elements. From the gorgeous plaid table runners, to the DIY hand-painted copper apples, to the provincial wire baskets and mercury glass candle holders, each component of the shoot was thoughtfully chosen to create a rustic yet modern autumn feel.

Additionally, many of the décor elements, such as the cookbooks, spice jars, and apples, were carefully selected because of their affordability or reusable qualities. We truly wanted this shoot to feel inspirational yet attainable, so that regardless of their budget, couples could incorporate aspects of the decor into their own weddings. For instance, the hanging wine glass display above the bar and dessert buffet was created out of a 12’ metal pole, 50 yards of navy and charcoal grosgrain ribbon, and wine glasses. This display is not only unique due to its affordable components, but because of the fun and functionality of allowing guests to select and cut their own wine glasses from the display.

Farm fresh donuts and apple cider (we decided to serve both spiced and hard) adorned the self-serve bar along with some of our favorite budget-friendly red wine. Love truly is the spice of life, so in lieu of traditional favors,a display of spice jars was set up for guests to take home with them. The thought was that these spices could be used by the wedding’s guests again and again, and would function as lovely reminders of this intimate fall wedding.

Jennifer Cyr of Cyrience Creative Studios was the brilliant photographer behind all of the lovely images. Natalie Trento of Natalie Trento Events conceptualized and implemented the stylized wedding design. The Kitchen Table, a beautiful downtown NYC private dining and event space that was recently featured on Vogue.com, provided the perfect setting for this intimate wedding shoot. The paper goods, including the adorable leaf “place cards” and recipe RSVP cards, were designed and printed by Afsoon Talai of Golreezan.

Natural Wedding Inspiration with Copper Details

Wedding Design

A styled shoot filled with one-of-a-kind details, an incredible wedding gown that’s ready to impress, and not one but two styled tablescapes all add up for a feature we just can’t wait to share with you all. Maria Mack Photography, Love ‘n Fresh Flowers along with the help of Confetti & Co. created these beautiful scenes for us to enjoy, both sharing the theme of natural wedding inspiration with a careful eye for detail. Let’s take a look!

Natural Wedding Inspiration with Copper Details - photo by Maria Mack Photography http://ruffledblog.com/natural-wedding-inspiration-with-copper-details

From the florist and shoot designer, Jennie Love of Love ‘n Fresh Flowers: Over the past 12 months, I’ve watched wedding trends shifting from rustic-vintage to a more raw, natural, One-of-a-Kind (OOAK) look. I find it really exciting to embrace this evolution and wanted our styled shoot to reflect an “earthy/OOAK/artisan” approach. I immediately drew inspiration from Carol Hannah’s Kensington gown, available at Lovely Bride. What amazing texture and form it has! It’s romantic, yet a bit raw and undone, with a decided OOAK approach. Exactly the look I was seeking for our model to wear! Philadelphia-based designer Doreen of Asarum Designs created OOAK jewelry for the shoot. The raw fluorite and quartz stones hugged by copper were the perfect match to the Kensington gown. Doreen also made beautiful OOAK wedding bands for the couple out of silver and copper. Her work is truly inspirational!

It was a lot of fun designing a bridal bouquet to go with the Kensington gown! Clean white peonies were a fluffy fragrant base, but I wanted a bit of wildness to match that of the skirt so I added more delicate, textural blooms like agrostemma, astilbe, astrantia, maple leaves, and ferns. All the flowers were grown organically at our own urban flower farm in Philadelphia. The bouquet was wrapped in long tails of OOAK hand-dyed raw silk ribbon from the crazy-talented Shellie at Silk & Willow. That ribbon and that dress…. m’wah!! They should always be together!

The venue, Pomme, is a bit of a blank slate, but beautiful with its clean white walls, hardwood floors, and stone fireplace. It was the perfect space to hone in on the details that make an event like a wedding memorable. We crafted a custom-built aged oak branch chuppah draped with organic raw linen and tied with more Silk & Willow ribbon out on the sloping front lawn along the winding little stream. The maple leaves that adorned the corners echoed the rich burgundy-purple hues in the ribbon. The dinner tables were draped in luxuriant Irish linen and flanked with wooden cross-backed chairs that elevated the curated tabletop decor. Copper chargers brought in some shine yet avoided being too glam. Each place setting was given a tiny fern and a raw piece of fluorite. The centerpieces were also from our own flower farm. They were designed in OOAK floral-textured ceramic bud vases made by Philadelphia-based ceramist Chase Brown. Bits of raw fluorite ran down the center of the table. Peachtree & Ward’s chef plated some beautiful seasonal food for us, including fiddlehead ferns, salmon and spring edamame. I was so lucky to have the super talented Maria Mack Photography to work with for the shoot. Maria’s natural style was perfect for the earthy organic details. And makeup artist Beke Beau is a true magician with her brushes! I am constantly in awe of her ability to draw out each of her brides’ natural beauty, making them all OOAK masterpieces.

A cute side story worth telling: our models for the shoot, Sarah and Ben, are a real-life couple who were getting married a few short weeks after the shoot. Months earlier, when Sarah had gone shopping for her own wedding gown, she had fallen totally in love with the Kensington and would have chosen it if her more traditional family hadn’t vetoed it. She chose a more traditional dress from BHLDN, but she told Ben about the Kensington and her disappointment. When Sarah found out we were using the gown for the shoot, she started crying. And it really was the perfect gown for her! We kept it a secret from Ben, and he didn’t see her in it until their “first look”, which was a very sweet moment to witness. It was such a lovely bonus to the shoot to see these two so in love and enjoying all the details of the day so much!

Green Autumn Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

There are few things more classic than a green and white color palette, but we always love seeing what stylists are able to create with these hues — especially when natural wood tones are mixed in! Ashleigh Jayne Photography, Angela Marie Events, and Lance Hayes Flowers worked together to bring us this inspiring shoot full of wonderful ideas, like the deer antler place cards!

fall wedding invitations - photo by Ashleigh Jayne Photography http://ruffledblog.com/green-autumn-wedding-inspiration

From the event designer, Angela Marie Events: I wanted to create a fall inspiration shoot that was very natural and had non-traditional fall colors. I was lucky enough to find a local farmer that allowed me to have a few pumpkins out the field this early in the season! They were so gorgeous and perfect with the whites, greens, grays, and browns I had in mind for this shoot. I used a simple farm table with simple cream plates from Pottery Barn and beautiful wood chargers. I found a grapevine heart garland from afloral.com. I cut it apart and added one to each seat with each place card. The place cards were displayed on deer antlers as guest would arrive. Proper Prints did a wonder job on the invitation and paper goodies that she watercolored in greys and greens.

For the cake, we had a beautiful 2-tier naked carrot cake with caramel drizzled on top. We had other dessert goodies, including caramel white chocolate apples. For drinks, hot white chocolate, sparkling apple cider, and local Swamp Pop was served to guests! The bride was in a gorgeous cafe color Madison James gown from Blush Formal and Bridal Salon with Betsey Johnson pumps and BHLDN accessories.

Reverie Supply

The shift from warmer weather into cool breezes can sometimes be a difficult one, but when we see stylish shoots like this one from Reverie Supply and Josephine Florals & Events, well, the transition becomes just a bit easier. This duo took pink and purple hues to craft a styled session centered around bohemian flair, lush floral design, and the whimsical love between two lovers, and the result is purely magical.

West Nyack wedding inspiration - photo by Reverie Supply http://ruffledblog.com/west-nyack-wedding-inspiration

From the event designer and stylist, Josephine of Josephine Florals & Events: Our vision was to create and capture a romantic yet whimsical fall wedding. Set in beautifully landscaped greens adorned with vintage furniture and elegant linens this shoot captured the romance while highlighting the endearing moments of a wedding day through bursts of wildflowers, pops of color and playful details. We were also inspired to include a foot washing ceremony to share intimate moments of the bride and groom. This shoot embodied fall colors of green, rich burgundy, ivory and gold with pops of reds and pinks to liven the floral arrangements & overall design. Fruit was incorporated to accentuate our colors and provide dimension. What a way to embrace the coming harvest! For florals, I chose a mixture of greens, wildflowers and berries for varied texture along with beautifully deep purple hanging Amaranthus for character. For our tablescape, everything seen on the tables and alters were thoughtfully orchestrated to create elegant and full table scapes. We incorporated many handmade/DIY details including the Mr. & Mrs. Chair signs, the potted succulents for seating, confetti bags, banners & champagne skewers for that touch of personalization.

From the photographer, Sally of Reverie Supply: Inspiration for this shoot really came from how beautiful our model’s smile was. She made you want to smile with her. Isn’t that the very definition of a bride? All the attention is given to the bride, as she glows, smiles and exudes beauty from the love within on her very special day! Each element of the shoot was made to convey a romantic, whimsical fall inspiration. Creating a playful yet romantic shoot was key for me. So, the deep reds, blackberry colors, rich purples, punches of green were all telling of a story.

We’re making our way towards the cooler weather of fall, and when we see shoots like this one from Bret Cole, Jan Hatch & Gayle Jarrett of California Vintage Rentals + Design, and Wanda’s Flower Shop, we can’t help but get even more excited to brew up some hot cocoa and pull out our cushy sweaters. Some inspiring floral design, a drool-worthy wedding cake, and a Monique Lhuillier gown all add up to pure wedding magic here!

Lake Tahoe wedding inspiration - photo by Bret Cole http://ruffledblog.com/lake-tahoe-wedding-inspiration

From the photographer, Bret Cole: The stylist (Jan Hatch) and I wanted to come up with a look that was clean, but unstructured. Organic, but with touches of rustic elegance that fits Tahoe. We chose a lot of plants that are native to the Tahoe area to include in the floral arrangements, and the sleek lines and warm woods of our mid-century modern furniture flowed well with the Resort’s style. When I pitched it to the marketing team at Squaw Creek, they loved it. I chose the models and vendors who joined us, and they deserve big props. I think they did an amazing job!

Florida Autumn Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

Photos by:

Darling Juliet

When I say that today’s bride is a hands-on kind of girl, I mean it. Katie owns a vegan bakery, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she opted to make her own wedding cake; however, she didn’t stop there – she also took on the decor, styling, flowers, wedding dress, jewelry, accessories, flower girl dresses, catering, invitations and printed items. Now THAT’S dedication. Thanks to Darling Juliet for sharing these images with us!

florida autumn wedding // via ruffledblog.com

From the bride, Katie: The style of the wedding was designed around the concept of both the Autumnal season, and the comfortable quality of being at home in our back yard. We wanted a wedding that was both beautiful, and fun; filled with sentimental moments, and little touches all around that let our guests know just how special they are to us. The feel of the wedding was inspired by the color palette that fall brings, but also about the coziness of being with people that you love, and in turn love you. Our DIY wedding was not just about our union as a couple, but about giving back to the same people that helped us grown into the people we are, and were willing to show us love and respect in the process. Our color scheme was based on the full autumnal color palette: we chose reds, sage green, oranges, yellows and golds, burgundy and brown, creams and pinks

Most of the wedding was DIY. I wanted to incorporate a lot of special touches and details to make our guests feel well taken care of. I made the invitations, save the dates, rehearsal dinner invitations, thank you cards; I wrote the programs and hand stitched each bound booklet; I wrote the entire non-traditional ceremony and found beautiful readings to incorporate into it; I made all the floral decor, the flower crowns, the bouquets, and the boutonnieres; I made all the bunting, the table decor and did all the hand lettering for the signs throughout the wedding; I hand made the favor baskets filled with delicious items to make at home (bread, jams, soups, honey from our apiary in Sandford, FL and selected teas that would compliment each of our guests personal tastes); finally I made all the flower girl dresses and my 1950’s inspired dress as well. Raphsodic Bakery is a vegan bakery in downtown Orlando, FL that Jonathan and I own (which we used to make all of the wedding desserts, wedding cakes, and groom’s cake), we also used the same space with a small team of friends to do all the catering for the wedding, which was 100% vegan and gluten free (because I am a celiac, and we had food-sensitive guests as well).

The groom’s favorite memory: Katie mentioned that she wanted to have something fun and unusual for the wedding, and I instantly thought of singing together and having karaoke at the wedding. Because of our mutual stubborn nature, Jon Prine’s “In Spite of Ourselves” stood out as the best song to sing together. She took singing lessons for a year and when the time came to perform did so beautifully. Singing with her made everything that much more amazing.

For the recessional, we walked down the aisle to “You are my Sunshine” because, Jonathan sang it to me, the first time he said “I love you” and that was such a special moment that we wanted to share it with everyone. There were so many songs played. Lauren, one of my dearest friends, and I spent hours upon hours creating a wonderful playlist, which she played at the wedding, as an honorary DJ for the night. We both love jazz music, mixed with lots of Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and Billie Holiday; while Jonathan loves 80s rock. Jonathan and I both love bluegrass, and thought that the combination of musical styles would make for a fun and eventful wedding. Lauren deftly played musical all night long, even incorporating some 90s Hip-Hop to make people dance!

Bohemian Fall Bridal Session

Wedding Design

It would be an injustice to let autumn come and go without sharing these gorgeous bridal session images, as far as I’m concerned. Alyssia B Photography took the reigns as photographer and Flowers By Adrien did the same with floral design, resulting in a romantic bohemian aesthetic heavy on the purples and pinks and light on fussiness.

Glittery Thanksgiving Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

One of the things I love most about Thanksgiving is the incredible dinner parties that come with it. Being surrounded by those you love, the most amazing food of the year, and rich, festive colors makes me warm and fuzzy inside! Additionally, these great dinner parties can often translate into equally fab reception tablescapes, like this one put together by Jessica White Photography and Branches Event Floral.

From the stylist and florist, Amanda Schelin of Branches Event Floral: Nestled in the hills of Alpine, UT, our team brought their talents to execute this picturesque, fall- inspiration shoot. We wanted to design a natural setting with a rustic structure and feel, juxtaposed with the glamor of gold glitter. Amanda from Branches Event Floral wanted to infuse peach into the colorscape, so as to do a spin on the natural or typical fall colors you see in wedding decor. Paired with shades of raspberry, pear, apple and champagne, the palette was one of mouthwatering edibles.

Swoon-worthy details like fresh fruit and glittered feathers set the tone for the shoot with their unexpected approach as décor. The flowers were left lush and bountiful to mimic the fall harvest. The cake was simply divine with its buttercream layers and simple design. Christina of Once Upon a Cake created our cake and dessert spread. What shoot would be complete without the perfectly designed paper suite? Design by Lauren Ashley created our beautiful menus and invitations, which sported gold-glittered envelope lining and the just the right touch of peach in the invite card.

Apple Orchard Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Nessa K Photography

I have fond memories of going apple picking with my family when I was younger, so you could say this styled shoot from Sarah Park and Nessa K Photography hits home for me. The theme was brilliantly executed, right down to the apple tucked into the bouquet by Petal and Print. If you weren’t in the spirit of autumn yet, you’ll definitely be ready now!

apple orchard wedding inspiration // via ruffledblog.com

From the event stylist, Sarah of Sarah Park Events: For this shoot we were inspired by one of the most popular activities Fall has to offer, “Apple Picking.” We wanted to incorporate apples into the shoot as much as we could, so we found the most beautiful backdrop at Baugher’s Orchard and made magic happen. From the centerpiece to the escort card station, apples were everywhere! My favorite part of the shoot has to be the “Bobbing Station,” we took a simple idea and made it into a unique escort card station that guests will remember for years! I could have not asked for a better team to work with on this fall inspired shoot and we hope we have inspired many Fall brides.

The Wedding Pie: Jessica + Terry

Budget Weddings

Photos by:

Jessica and Terry’s beautiful Seattle Fall wedding was featured a few months back. I’m wondering if the bride’s contagious smile has anything to do with how great the wedding turned out and how much money they saved!

The Wedding Pie: Jessica + Terry

Budget Breakdown:

[expand]Food: $5000
Photography: $3300
Attire/Accessories: $2400
Venue: $900
Invitations/Decor/DIYs: $250
Flowers: $60

From the bride, Jessica: I’m always on the hunt for a good deal! If your funds are limited, call on your creative friends! Invite them over for lunch and wedding crafting. Be gracious and respectful of their time and chances are they will be more than willing to help with any projects. Also, shop ahead for decor and attire. Check sample sales for dresses and search thrift stores and online for second hand decor or clearance paper goods. Every dollar adds up, so even saving $20 here and there matters. We DIYed our invitations, guest book, ceremony backdrop, flowers and some decor. We love to create and our projects saved us money.

bohemian fall wedding

What did you splurge on? For us, wedding planning was great practice at prioritizing! I recommend setting your top three priorities as a couple. Ours were location, food, and photography. Splurge on things that will make your day more relaxing and take the stress off you, your partner, and your families!

bohemian fall wedding

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I believe it is essential to be on the same page as your partner. Once you know where the funds will come from, like family gifts or your savings, you know what you limits are. We had savings and contributions from family to work with, and we also budgeted to put a set amount of our monthly income into the wedding fund during our engagement. We bought a house close to the wedding, so veering from our budget was out of the question! No mindless spending allowed! Plan ahead, get creative and do your research. Do loads of research to avoid sticker shock and be flexible, but realistic with your funds.

Fall Wedding Flower Guide

Flower Guide

Whenever we think we couldn’t fall more in love with flower arrangements, a bouquet by Janie Medley Flora Design comes along. With images by Tori Watson of Marvelous Things Photography and makeup by Emily Hudspeth, it’s not difficult to see why we’re falling hard for this look influenced by bride Ashley’s vintage Gunne Sax wedding gown!

From the photographer, Tori of Marvelous Things Photography: Back in the Fall of 2011, I had the privilege of shooting an amazing Virginia farm wedding for a darling couple, Nick & Ashley. When Ashley showed me the incredible vintage Gunne Sax dress she was considering wearing in her wedding, I DIED from how fantastic it was. But when she decided to go with a different dress for the big day, I knew that meant we would HAVE to do a styled shoot, sometime, with the Gunne Sax, because it was too amazing to simply be stuck in a closet. So this shoot has been in the works for over a year, really, and as Fall rolled around again, I was SO grateful to get the amazing Janie Medley on board for the gorgeous floral wreath and bouquet, and Emily Hudspeth for the perfect hair and make-up. I wanted to keep the overall shoot simple to let the dress and florals shine. Ashley made for a stunning model, and I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity for the images to be featured!

Hawaiian Holiday Inspiration Shoot

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We’re starting our roll into the winter season, which means Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is on repeat in my iTunes these days. Add our favorite season with one of the best places on earth, and this styled shoot is brought to fruition by Opihi Love and Tamiz Photography. A holiday shoot with bohemian styling from Hawaii? Say no more, I’m officially sold!

bohemian wedding decor

From the stylist, Melissa of Opihi Love: Hawaii is such a little slice of heaven on earth — beaches, sand, sunsets, we have it all! It’s when you find hidden gems like a Eucalyptus Forest, and fields of protea, you realize just what Maui has to offer. Although our leaves don’t change color, on the side of Haleakala Crater in upcountry Maui we created our luxe version of a Holiday Photo Shoot. Inspired by beautiful fabrics, warming colors and nod to nature, Tamiz Photography captured the shoot as if we were high in the mountains of Oregon.

For the venue, I chose Holland Ranch in San Luis Obispo, CA. I didn’t want there to be any architecture or man made structures in the photos, and Holland Ranch is set against one of my favorite landscapes in the county. I made an exception for the boat… because it was just too darn awesome. In the end, every single detail was perfect. There was absolutely nothing forced or fake about anything — everything felt so real and organic. Scott and Ashley made for the perfect models, as well. They only recently got married last August, so they’ve definitely still got the wedding love-bug :)

Bohemian Nouveau Wedding

Bohemian Weddings

Photos by:

Goodness gracious, what this wedding does to me. Chris and Erman had a bohemian outdoor wedding ceremony with a most amazing setup, and had their friends and photographer Abdi of Three Photographers capture their wedding day. Between the incredible wild bouquet and the jack-o-lantern table numbers, this wedding is one for the fall books!

bride and groom outdoors

From the bride, Chris: Our style was definitely bohemian, with a touch of nouveau. Lots of lace, crystals, silver and copper. We wanted the country feeling but with a bit of refinement. Romantic yet easy. We had the bridesmaids wear whatever they wanted, just told them creams, blushes and flowy or lacy. Brown shoes, boots or clogs. Backyard appropriate. The fellas were in dark jeans and mellow colors. My maids of honor (I had two, also the photographers) made the flowers from my yard. I made the boutonnières from feathers I collected.

We strung the clothesline on the house for the seat cards. Burned each of them and used stamps for the numbers. Carved pumpkins for the tables. I purchased loose chandelier crystals from etsy and strung them together with Xmas ornament hooks. Then taped them on hangers and hung them from the trees. I purchased fall flowers (mums, grasses, vines and ground covers. We will be planting all of them so we an enjoy them every year on our anniversary). They were put in baskets we borrowed from our local farm stand.

Peach and Black Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

Photos by:

One of our favorite things about autumn is how it brings with it a proliferation of rich tones — deep greens, golds, blacks, and peaches, all of which are present in this styled shoot from Camden Chitwood of Emerson Events and Amanda Watson. If these colors alone aren’t enough to make you swoon, we guarantee the black and gold cake from Madison’s on Main will do the trick!

black gold wedding ideas

gold fall wedding ideas

From the event designer, Camden Chitwood of Emerson Events: I have been swooning over peach & gold recently. Juliet garden roses are a favorite flower of mine, so that was the first thing I knew was going to be used in this shoot. Since it’s Autumn… we just had to add a darker hue into the mix. I softened it up & created drama by using black lace for the chair caps & table overlay.

Since it’s close to Halloween, of course there had to be a masquerade mask. The theme ended up morphing into a Victorian romance feel. My baker Donna Munson had full creative range, with the only guidelines being black & gold – she definitely hit the nail on the head! Drama & more drama.

Autumnal Blush Inspiration Shoot

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We’re inching our way into fall, so what better way to embrace one of our favorite seasons than with this styled shoot sent over by The Little Flower Cottage and Bring to Light Photography? With gorgeous autumnal floral arrangements and antiques galore, it’s pretty tough not to love this little piece of gorgeousness.

vintage reception table ideas

From the florist, Navya of The Little Flower Cottage: It’s the time of year in New England when the vibrant colors of summer begin to softly fade, cooler weather moves in, and we all hope for those lingering Indian Summer afternoons. We wanted to capture that fleeting moment while showcasing beautiful and interesting ways to use a collection of curiosities to enhance the feel of a wedding day. Our true source of inspiration came from a love of found antiques and vintage pieces. Many of the elements used were sourced from tucked away antique and salvage shops found throughout New England.

From the photographer, Alea: We shot on Longview Mansion’s grounds that had a lot of rustic structures we could work with along with the great overgrown grass. With the vision I had to shoot it I just couldn’t find a dress that matched the feeling of what we were going for so I made the dress to capture the very whimsical direction we were headed for and used color in the dress inspired by the latest fashion trend of using color in bridal. The florist used her great-grandmother’s amazing pink antique depression glass as centerpieces and accents to the flowers and cake. The cake decorator used a brush-like texture on the buttercream to give it a nest-like look. The furniture rentals used were great rustic pieces like old wooden crates, old dress trunks, rusted keys and this great wide bottom over-sized chair that looks like it came straight from the set of Alice and Wonderland. The pergola was a great accent location in front of the water for something a little different.

Minnesota Stone Barn Wedding

Rustic Weddings

Photos by:

Is there a better time of the year for a rustic soiree than the Fall? I think not. This ultra chic barn wedding shot by Eric Lundgren Photography is the perfect example of rustic elegance. Love the little vintage touches blended with modern styling. Anna wore her mother’s veil, such a great way to “something borrowed” and to honor your mom or mom-in-law if you want to rock a brand new gown.

From Eric Lundgren Photography: Anna and Dan hosted a classic wedding in southern Minnesota. They married under mature oak trees next to golden corn fields. The reception was held in a historic stone barn full of thoughtful DIY details. The couple chose a rustic harvest theme for decor, centerpieces of artichokes and apples over burlap runners complimented by the leaves gently falling during the ceremony.

As the groom is a stand-up comedian, the couple provided a homemade Mad Lib sheet at each place setting to entertain the guests before dinner.

The couple chose an apple crisp dessert so cardboard cakes were constructed and coated with a chalkboard finish, allowing children to decorate the cakes with colored chalk. The chalkboard theme was also used for the bar menu.

Floral Ombre for Fall

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We’ve been patiently waiting for Fall to share this post by Sarah Winward of Honey of a Thousand Flowers. If you’re in love with the ombre trend – that dreamy gradient of soft colors – as much as we are, you will love these floral arrangements that Sarah designed. In a season where nature changes colors almost overnight, ombre comes as an organic inspiration. Thank you Erin Kate Photography for the images.

ombre fall wedding colors

From Sarah Winward: The transition to fall is my favorite. On one tree or in one bunch of flowers, there can be a wide range of colors. I think mimicking the changes in nature for a wedding is gorgeous, and using an ombre theme for a fall wedding seems like a perfect way to do that.

These arrangements span a huge color palette. You could select a couple of colors from this range and focus on the transition between those two or three-or go crazy and do all of them. The play on warm and cool colors here is what makes this color palette interesting to me. If you want to narrow it down a bit, the spectrum of colors between peach and orange is an excellent choice for a fall ombre wedding. There is a certain sweet and sour element to this palette that is really appealing to me.

ombre fall wedding centerpieces

If you have one element that is ombre in your wedding, I think it is nice to let it make the statement and keep the other things consistent. I used different containers for the arrangements here, but they are all a similar type. The bouquets are different colors, but the ribbon is all the same. Or – keep the flowers the same and do ombre ribbon!

Flowers used in these arrangements:

Red arrangement: Viburnum berry, scabiosa, wild grasses, ranunculus
Peach arrangement: rose, berries and leaves
White arrangement: snowberry eucalyptus, spray rose, elephant ear plant

Coxcomb Flowers – Bouquets for Fall

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Today Sarah Winward of Honey of a Thousand Flowers‘s wedding flower segment is showing us fresh Fall hues and blooms that are available during this season. She designed a gorgeous bouquet using today’s flower feature, coxcomb. Needless to say, its texture makes the bouquet look so rich. Thank you Heather Nan for the beautiful images!

coxcomb fall wedding flowers

Coxcomb are a love ‘em or hate ‘em flower. To some they look like velvet and sea coral. They have thick stems, and sort of a v-shaped base, but the top of the flowers is the most interesting.

Coxcomb are available summer to fall. They come in a range of colors, from a light green to a honey-yellow, orange to rust, red, burgundy, and a deep fuchsia. I have seen a dark purple from time to time too.

fall wedding bouquets

Here they are used in bud vases, and a bouquet. While they are tricky to use in single vases because they have such thick stems, it’s a good look if your vases have a wide enough opening. They are such an interesting shape that I think they are often at their best when they are isolated. Coxcomb are great in bouquets because you can showcase the tops of them.

Other flowers used in this bouquet are: Hydrangea, Echinops thistle, Amaranthus, Gomphrena, garden rose and maple leaves.

Do you love them or do you think they are best used for Halloween?

Late Summer Blooms: Scabiosa Pod

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We’re not quite ready to say goodbye summer just yet! Today Sarah Winward Honey of a Thousand Flowers is talking about late summer wedding flowers. Isn’t the bouquet below a stunner? Thank you Heather Nan for the gorgeous images!

late summer wedding flowers bouquet

From Sarah: It is against code of conduct to ask a florist her favorite flower, none of us can commit to one. But scabiosa resides somewhere in my top five, and that has never changed. I think they look like they were plucked straight from a watercolor painting, especially the lavender color. Scabiosa come in four different colors, all available at slightly staggered times and all are as gorgeous as the last. They are delicate and feminine. Scabiosa make wispy accents that give arrangements character, a perfect finishing touch. They are wonderful in little vases by themselves, in large arrangements, and bouquets. I like using them in all stages of their bloom, when they are just green buds all the way through as a mature flowers. You may have also seen the scabiosa pod. They are those little brown rustic balls that have been increasingly popular lately. The light purple and the white are similar in shape, both with large centers and broad petals. The dark purple and raspberry look like they have pincushion tops and they have smaller, fluted petals.

As a general rule, all of the colors are available in the summer to early fall. The white and is usually available first (June), Then the lavender and purple come, the raspberry is available for a short month or so, usually in August.

Virginia Vineyard Wedding

Garden Weddings

Photos by:

Today’s wedding is a study in all things lovely and cohesive. Christine and Tim met when they were just teenagers but their wedding eight years later was a grownup vineyard affair with quirky and personalized details. They handmade so many elements of their wedding day that the details came together to perfectly summarize their long courtship and their hopes for their marriage. The little graphic design elements- from those sweet silhouettes to the lovely paper goods- pull together the hundreds of ideas the couple gathered during their engagement to present a beautiful wedding weekend to their family and friends. A huge thanks to the oh-so-talented Heidi from Our Labor of Love by Heidi for sending it over!

From the bride, Christine: When we got engaged, we both knew that Charlottesville was where we would say our vows. It is a vibrant college town where I’d recently graduated, surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills, orchards, and vineyards and defined by a Southern charm and welcoming vibe unlike anywhere else. Take all that, add the stunning colors of fall, and you’ve got a little slice of what Tim and I are all about. We wanted to bottle that warmth and create a unique, personalized event by bringing together all those people we love most in a comfortable, relaxed, and most importantly FUN atmosphere where they could kick back, share a glass of wine, and become woven into the romantic history of the area.

Instead of a single wedding day, we chose a three-day wedding weekend so that our guests could have a getaway in Charlottesville; we hosted a bride vs. groom family soccer and frisbee match on the UVA Lawn, an apple-picking exploration in the orchards, and toured Jefferson’s Monticello. By wedding day, there was a magical buzz as everyone from all sides of our lives came together to create one cohesive family. It was exactly the feeling we’d both envisioned but never imagined would play out so perfectly.

Our goal for the wedding was to achieve homey, rustic, Virginian warmth. Our color scheme really played off the incredible fall tones evident in the grape vines and treetops in Charlottesville in October. Beyond that, our florist, Pat Roberts, was a genius at reading our minds in terms of turning our (sometimes scattered) ideas into an incredible, unifying reality.

Tim and I are high school sweethearts. We actually met on the first day of school our freshman year on the gym bleachers (and that’s where Tim proposed eight years later!) With that sort of history, it was only fitting that we get married in a spot where history surrounds you. The University of Virginia chapel is a gorgeous but intimate stone building in the middle of Grounds (UVA students don’t use the word “campus”) just adjacent to the Rotunda and the beautiful colonnades of the UVA Lawn. Its interior is defined by bold stained glass scenes and dark, rich wood tones. The location allowed us to have a lunch reception in a nearby garden after which we had UVA student guides lead our guests on a historic tour of Jefferson’s University, which is also a World Heritage Site.

The reception site was a bit more complicated. After spending a full day hopping from vineyard to vineyard, Tim, my mom and I were tired, cranky, and ready to give up. We had one more stop and almost decided to forget it and head home! Thank goodness we didn’t, because as soon as we drove down the long, gravel lane to the gates outside Delfosse Vineyard and Winery, we knew we’d found something special. Nestled in the Charlottesville hills, Delfosse is a French-style vineyard with incredible wines and an even more impressive location and ambience. The property has a historic log cabin with a large, wrap-a-round porch overlooking the expansive views where we held our cocktail hour and a large open terrace where the dinner and reception took place. It was made even more perfect by the fact that the winery is owned and operated by one of my French teachers from the high school where Tim and I met!

After commissioning a graphic artist from New York to design a personalized silhouette as our cohesive wedding “icon”, we designed and then printed, lined, and hand crafted our invitations, welcome bag paper goods, programs, and menus with supplies from The Paper Source. We found a budding wedding calligrapher on Etsy for our envelopes.

We created our own welcome bags with goodies that had played prominent roles in our relationship or were special to Charlottesville. They included Old Dominion root beer, Route 11 Potato chips, Virginia salted peanuts, Swedish fish, sour patch kids, bottled water, and Juicy Fruit gum. We also included a welcome letter, custom map of the area, and lists of our favorite restaurants, bars, historic sites, hiking spots, and wineries.
stitched wedding programs
We used iron-on transfers of Tim and I’s individual silhouettes to customize the burlap runners we’d created for each table. My mom created the mason jar chandeliers that hung from the clear top tent at the reception. She aged 6- and 8-foot wooden planks and then screwed the mason jar tops into holes she’d drilled into the planks. The pillar candles illuminated the tent with a soft, romantic glow throughout the entire night!

I used an old window I’d salvaged from the trash and a white ink pen to create our seating assignment chart. We designed all the table names after funny memories, mostly self-deprecating humor of embarrassing moments, from our years together. Each card had a name on one side and the story on the other.

We hand stamped hundreds of white paper bags with our custom silhouette to create lanterns to illuminate the walk down from the cocktail hour in a historic cabin on the property to the reception tent down below. This was also the pathway we drove back up to get to the cabin where we spent our wedding night!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? I think a lot of brides question whether taking the time and energy to dabble in what might seem like minute details is really worth it. To me, what made Tim and I’s nuptials so incredibly special were the personalized details we’d worked on together over the course of the prior year – from the paper goods we’d designed and hand crafted individually to the violinist and trumpeter Tim had secretly hired to play during the recessional a la “Love Actually” to the surprise groom’s cake inspired by a book Tim had written as a second grader to the table names based on hilarious and/or important moments during our long courtship to the dance Tim and I’d choreographed for our first dance (which included a “Dirty Dancing” element and the robot). These were the things that made our day “ours,” and they are the things that our guests continue to bring up time and time again. So, my advice is to go for it – take the extra time, listen to every crazy idea that pops into your head and make it happen. It’s completely and entirely worth it!

The corresponding piece of advice is to book your key vendors as early as possible and pay attention to reviews and references. That way you have a creative, reliable crew who can execute the big picture stuff and free up time for you to focus on your own special, personalized additions!
