Winter Woodland Wedding Ideas

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We know Christmas is just around the corner, so we’re here to spread a bit more holiday cheer. Artist collective based out of Dallas, Grit and Gold put together this incredible ‘winter woodland’ inspiration, complete with evergreen branches decorating the chairs and a fun sled photobooth backdrop. Thank you Couture Events by Lottie, Nine Photography and We + You Studios for the gorgeous party inspiration!

From the designer, Lottie: This is the first shoot in our new design studio with our Grit + Gold team. Inspired for Christmas, our shoot’s setting and feel was winter woodsy. Touches of antlers can be found throughout from stationery and centerpieces, to the unbelievably beautiful antler and floral head piece. We had fun designing the setups which included a cocoa display and champagne bar. The sweet treats were the perfect feel of handmade goodness that evokes the feeling of “home”.

Handcrafted Dallas Wedding

DIY Weddings

Photos by:

Today’s wedding by Grit and Gold dream wedding team Nine Photography, , Couture Events by Lottie is one that warms our hearts to the core. Newlyweds Diana and Miguel honored the bride’s father with various homages to him throughout the day, and made their wedding an event that was perfectly suited to who they are as a couple.

From the bride, Diana: If I had to describe our day, I would have to define it as artistic/DIY. We tried to involve ourselves with everything! We are the type of couple that like to place our hands in all projects. We wanted it to feel like we were walking into “our” world :) wanted our family and friends to know from the time they received the Save the Date & invite to the end when we did our finally farewell, that they felt us.

For the wedding, we designed and made all the “save the dates” and invitations, marquee letters of our initials that actually lit up!, paper pinwheels that were hung everywhere but mainly on our altar wall that was installed outside for the ceremony, cake pop holders that we stamped our faces on, made a life size (8 feet) replica of our wedding invitation and hand painted it, made some colorful lanterns that hung above our table (reminded me of my dad, he was a painter so I used the paint swatches that are at Home Depot to cover them), wooden banners that hung to highlight different areas during the reception, made the guys’ boutonnieres and girls’ bouquets.

We wanted to place a little something special we did in honor of my dad. We wanted to have him with us throughout our wedding and feel his presence and this is how we did it. Like I mentioned earlier, he was a professional interior painter so we used paint swatches from home depot to make the lanterns that hung over our tables, used his rocks that he collected throughout his life for the table number holders, my brother that walked me down the aisle with my moms wore his cowboy boots and cowboy hat like he would have worn, and the paint swatches were used as the seating chart too!

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Make it your own!!! Make it unique!!! If you have the time and energy then DIY the heck out of it! You will see yourself throughout the wedding during your magical day and feel like it truly is yours. We loved hearing the comments of our wedding afterwards “it was so y’all!” “I felt like we walked into your home” “It was so unique!” Many brides I know find it easier to just get the “package deal” which works great for some but many later come to find out that they didn’t have an attachment to their wedding and it just felt like “another wedding” but placing yourselves into the planning and making of will give you that connection! Use your family and friends for help!!! I know this area I did have trouble with because I felt like I was going to be a burden but honestly they are willing and most of the time waiting for the invitation! So ask away! Most importantly!!! Always grab your newly hubs and during your reception take the time to step back and see allllll of the beautiful faces of your family and friends smiling and celebrating your new life! then think “We did this.”

Getting the Most from Inspiration Shoots to Real Weddings

Wedding Planning

Photos by:

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that we absolutely love styled shoots. They inject some creativity and inspiration into the wedding world in often unexpected ways, but often times it’s difficult to see how shoot ideas can translate into real weddings and their real budgets. In order to show how to use wedding inspiration shoots for your own wedding, we’ve asked some talented wedding professionals to dole out some of their advice for bringing inspiration shoots to reality, in 7 different ways:

getting the most from wedding inspiration shoots

how to use wedding photoshoots

lavender field weddings

From Firefly Events: Usually, locations for styled shoots are picked to enhance the overall feel of the design. Event styling is amazing but the couple shouldn’t ignore the location. Our tip to couples who are trying to incorporate the look and feel of the styled shoot into their wedding, is to ask themselves what words they would use to describe the location. When researching and visiting venues, ask yourself if you would use the same words to describe the venue.

old world philadelphia wedding
Above image from this shoot by Maria Mack Photography

For example, some key words/feelings that would describe the location for this shoot seen above: rustic, natural beauty, earthy, romantic, organic, historic, intimate. You can use these keywords when searching online for venues. Many blogs by photographers and videographers will tag their posts using similar keywords with the location of the wedding. You may just find the great venue you were searching for!

how to use wedding photoshoots

From Tree of Life Films:

If it’s a film of the styled shoot, the couple can still get a feel of what to expect from the videographer for their wedding film. Some questions to ask yourself while watching:

1. Do you like the choice of music? Is there good pacing and editing to the music?
2. Do you like the style of shooting? i.e. in this film there are different types of shooting: handheld, slider (smooth panning shot), time lapse
3. Do you like how the videographer filmed the couple? Does it capture emotion between them?
4. Do you like the coloring of the film?

These are questions to ask while watching any wedding film to find out the best videographer for your wedding.

From Lottie of Couture Events by Lottie: I strongly feel that brides can get not only great ideas from shoots like display or execution of details, but they can also use those very ideas and infuse them into their own wedding day. I try very hard to make all my shoots have realistic setups that can be easily woven into a wedding. Whether it’s a drink station, escort card idea or lovely tablescape, brides can see something not so ordinary and totally work with it. We all love shoot eye candy but it’s the best when you can take an idea and realistically use it or even make it better. I love to play with casual elements (maybe because I’m Texan) and jazz them up with texture that appeal to your senses.

From Chelsea of Southern Fried Paper: When you look at a styled shoot – look at the details. Look how every vignette is carefully thought out. Look at the small decorative pieces that are tucked in alongside the lavish floral. You can do the same with your reception focal points – everything from the cake table to the favor table. It’s all of the little things that make the decor personal and special to you. Personalize every aspect you can!

how to use wedding photoshoots
Above image from this shoot by Gideon Photography and Forevermore Events

From Lottie of Couture Events by Lottie: This is particularly my favorite element to styling and design. I love a good theme. Not over the top but just the right dose. This is HUGE for brides and grooms because they can take very personal moments such as the place they met or where he proposed, and apply it to the details of their wedding. Maybe that’s a carnival, the Eiffel Tower or a small little backyard gathering. Have a theme puts attitude into all those “little” things.

natural wedding invitations
Above image from this shoot by Brumley & Wells

From Natalie Barrett: In our photoshoots, we like to stick to a specific theme by narrowing down and melding broad ideas that can later be woven into wedding day. Staying within the loose boundaries of a theme not only helps to pull in consistency throughout but it also shows brides that they too can design their special day by simply adhering to a central topic (i.e. classic, modern, vintage, nautical, decade, etc.) Make sure to always keep your desired topic in the forefront when planning and developing each integral detail of the wedding. Pinterest has made it easy by allowing brides to pin images that come from a particular styled shoot or many different shoots to make one beautiful board loaded with their themed favorites.

Scandinavian wedding ideas

purple wedding ideas

From Camden Chitwood of Emerson Events: Choosing your color palette is one of the most important concepts for your big day. The time of year and venue will be your most important factors in this step. Do you want drama? Go for bright bold colors… and stay true to them! Choose a few and stick with them throughout the entire wedding. I love the use of color in the wedding invitation. The invitation is the first “glimpse” guests will get. It will set the tone for your wedding. Exact color matches can be tough, so if you have a specific color in mind, be open to incorporating different shades. Most importantly, choose what speaks to you. If you have something crazy in mind… run with it, darling!

how to use wedding photoshoots

Another important element of styled shoots is to take note of products or vendors you might like to use for your own wedding day. With the proliferation of inspiration shoots these days, there are bound to be some taking place right near you, and they’re a great way to learn about new vendors! Even so, a photographer or stylist might catch your eye and we guarantee they’d love to travel to take place in your special day. At the very least, you might even see the perfect plate design you’ve been looking for, or the exact bouquet arrangement!

The outpouring of creativity in wedding shoots is infinite. You find yourself pinning your little heart out for all of the amazing ideas each shoot brings, and perhaps you may find some bits and bobs that you now must make yourself stat. Simple ideas that don’t require further instructions beyond what you see are great starting points to put your own twist to add your stamp to your wedding day.

On Cloud Nine Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

I’m beyond enamored of this afternoon’s photoshoot goodness from nbarrett photography, Grit + Gold, and Bows and Arrows. Dreaming up of a On Cloud 9 inspired wedding, this shoot has pops of pink, ribbon streamers galore, fluffy clouds of hydrangeas, and scrumptious goodies from Culinary Arts and Layered Bake Shop. Make sure you catch the behind-the-scenes video by I Do Cinematics at the end to get the full experience!

pink white table ideas

From the event stylist, Lottie: When we pulled together to think up the On Cloud 9 shoot, it was a must to incorporate all things heavenly. We wanted soft textured touches in the floral and details throughout to give a feel of floating on a cloud. From the hanging tabletop to the lush floral cloud above, this shoot encompasses all that is whimsy and romantic. Yes that is an actual cloud!! A dreamy, predominate white background was chosen while weaving gold and hues of pink all in an ombre’d effect.

A dip dyed muslin runner was DIY’d and pooled on each side of the table, which coordinated so lovely with the cascading ribbons from above. Both tying beautifully into a matching ombre invitation suite. And you cannot fail to notice the wonderfully constructed floral head piece, bouquet and cotton boutonnières. Desserts were carefully chosen and display the soft touches and flavors of a croquembouche cake, mini waffles, staked crepe cake, meringue puffs, and mini cotton candy puffs. Our cute couple played and laughed while sipping from their “Love Floats”.

Casey Brodley, Photographer

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. My background and training is steeped in photo journalism, so that’s how I approach a wedding. My goal is to document the day, not stage it. I let moments unfold naturally, with minimal prom posing and minimal “say cheese” interference.

As a photo journalist, I come prepared for anything. Every wedding is different. I have witnessed full-grown men weep more times than I can count. I have seen smiles so wide that I’m concerned someone may burst a blood vessel. I have climbed mountains with all my gear. And this one time a sprinkler system was triggered during a ceremony.

As a wedding photographer, I walk into every job with the guarantee that I will witness pure joy. But more importantly, I walk into every job with the probability that my day will end with cake. I like to keep my cake-to-work ratio balanced. For health reasons.

Farm Inspired Bridal Shower

Wedding Design

Photos by:

We love it when bridesmaids run wild with ideas for a bridal shower, so we were delighted when this styled shoot from Grit + Gold landed in our inbox! Lottie took the idea of “milk maids” and ran with it, creating a flavored milk station, a spread of gourmet cheeses and scones, and ice cream cartons. We’re also huge fans of the “Will You Be My Bridesmaid” handkerchiefs!

bridesmaids at bridal shower

From the event stylist, Lottie: I have been scheming up a sweet little shoot that is solely focused on bridesmaids just having fun. Finally, it has arrived. With the help of great friends, one sweet little house belonging to The Wooly Thistle and lots of farm critters, behold! This shoot is so southern, it’s breathtaking. Details include a flavored milk station, Blue Bell mini carton ice cream setup, one sweet and southern porch table setting, gourmet variety cheeses, pancakes, biscuits, farm fresh eggs, ahh! Everything sweet about the south, all in one shoot! Stationary details by Southern Fried Paper include custom “Will you be my Bridesmaid” vintage hankies, paper banners, place cards and cookie favor milk cartons.

Earthy Chic Dallas Wedding

This wedding, expertly designed by Grit + Gold and captured by Ryan Ray, is the perfect marriage of chic femininity and earthy goodness. The layers of texture are just heavenly. We could spend hours just staring at these amazing tablescape with a dainty antique china pattern from Rent My Dust Vintage!

From the event designer, Lottie of Grit + Gold: I am creating a new word for this wedding… earthchic. While Kristin loved textures like burlap, she still loved the frilly feel of ruffles. And while she adores moss, she still loves a clean and chic look. We really worked earthy elements into the wedding without going overkill and still keeping a classy appeal.
