Colorful Woodland Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

I hope you’re ready for a burst of color, because you’re about to get it from this styled shoot by Caroline Ross Photography, Umbrella Events, and Green With Envy. The team dreamt of a Kate Spade-meets-the-outdoors theme, and we love how they were able to bring nods to nature indoors. Top it all off with a delicious looking dessert table, and we’re all set!

From the event designer, Umbrella Events: This is our stylized session from Vancouver, Canada, with a theme of Kate Spade in the woods. We used a lot of different vendors for this shoot and everyone was really enthusiastic about the Kate Spade theme. We wanted stripes and hot pinks along with a woodsy theme, and used gold animals and a beautiful hanging wreath to bring the outdoors in!

Crisp Coastal Bridal Inspiration

Wedding Design

If any shoot could make us head for the coast, it’s this one photographed by Christine Pienaar Photography. Christine recently took part in a Christie Graham workshop, where a team of talented photographers captured gorgeous portraits accentuated beautifully with flowers by Garden Party Flowers. This is coastal romance at its finest.

From the photographer, Christine Pienaar Photography: With fall fast approaching the coast of Vancouver, this styled bohemian bridal look brings the perfect inspiration for brides who are swooning over long sleeved gowns. Just because the air is a little cooler and crisper, doesn’t mean couples need to hide away from a beautiful coastal setting. This shoot was brought together by the inspiration of the beautiful Rosa Clara long sleeve flared lace gown and deep blues of the west coast. With bohemian touch in mind, the brides fishtail braid ties in a romantic touch to go with the grooms sophisticated checkered suit. With a center piece to swoon over for days, the frame is not complete without the stunning scenery of the coastal rocks and evergreens.

Relaxed Backyard Australian Wedding

Garden Weddings

Photos by:

Love Katie + Sarah

Any time we know we’ve got a bride who made all the decor and favors herself, we get an extra kick out of it. Love Katie + Sarah and Moss Industry are here to share this beautiful backyard wedding in Australia that’s just about as relaxed as it gets. No bridal party, no sit-down meal, and no unnecessary frills — just lots of dancing, love, and wood-fired pizza!

relaxed backyard Australian wedding - photo by Love Katie and Sarah http://ruffledblog.com/relaxed-backyard-australian-wedding

From the bride, Hayley: Hugh and I love a party, so there was no theme or style. We just wanted a big party with our favourite people and a wedding thrown in there somewhere. Food, Booze and Dancing. It was a DIY mishmash. I made all the decorations (bunting and potted succulents) and party favours (piccalilli and plum jam). We didn’t go over the top with decorations as the location was so beautiful that we didn’t need to and also I didn’t want to stress over the planning and wanted to enjoy the process so we kept it basic. Hugh and I are not very polished people, we’re a bit rough around the edges so it made sense that the day was the same. We didn’t bother with bridal parties as we just didn’t see the point. We didn’t want a sit down wedding so we got a wood fire pizza truck come and just churn out food for a few hours, it was perfect, everyone was on their feet and mingling, eating, drinking and hanging out.

I only met with the florist 3 days before the wedding and she was so cool and lovely. I wanted succulents (my favourite) and local native shrubs and flowers. I wanted the location to be incorporated and inspire the day. There weren’t many flowers, just a bouquet for me and my daughter and a couple of large arrangements at the entrance, they blended in so beautifully with the wild bushy surrounds of the property. We also got our friend Zoe to make a (gluten and dairy free for Hugh) cake covered in succulents and it looked rad!

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Yes. Don’t go overboard, at the end of the day its about you and your partner, not the table settings. Make sure you enjoy the process and don’t sweat the little things (no one else will). On the day, don’t get caught up in the running of the day, just enjoy all of it, eat the food, drink the wine, dance, hang out and have the best day ever. Too many times Ive heard that the couple were stressed the whole day and they got so stuck making small talk that they didn’t even get to eat the food, that’s just crazy! I wanted to get in on the action and enjoy the party I put so much work and love into.

Wedding Music:
Processional: “Moon River,” as sung by Audrey Hepburn
Certificate Signing: “For Once in My Life,” Stevie Wonder / “God Only Knows,” The Beach Boys
Reception Entrance: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
Choosing music was way harder than we anticipated. We’re both music lovers so it had to be right. Our favourite love songs are all tragic and intense, not suitable for a wedding so it took forever to get a playlist together. We went with classic songs so everyone could get excited and so we knew the songs wouldn’t date badly. We then had a long playlist of songs while we greeted everyone of both new and old tracks, then had an amazing cover band until 11:00pm, after they clocked off we just handed over the iPod to the crowd and had the best craziest dance party for hours.

Golden Plum Garden Wedding

Wedding Design

A garden wedding is a treat any time of the year, though it certainly shines best when surrounded by blooming flowers and great agricultural details, like in this shoot from Simply Rose Photography, Weddings by Journey, and Greenstems. Deep purple and gold come together to make a rich color palette, which serves as a perfect contrast to the bride’s wispy and romantic wedding gown!

golden plum garden wedding - photo by Simply Rose Photography http://ruffledblog.com/golden-plum-garden-wedding

From the photographer, Rose of Simply Rose Photography: The main inspiration for this shoot was a deep purple colour combined with some rustic food elements like artichokes, berries and grapes. The concept was developed by myself to include some rich tones that would be offset by an outdoor garden location that could be fitting any time of the year. Gold was added as a small accent in some of the decor and the cake. The scene starts off with the elegant tablescape of gold charger plates with gold-trimmed china along with a matching set of cutlery. A menu card with a small greenery sprig completes the place setting simply yet elegantly. Each setting has two glasses; one purple tall-stemmed goblet and a smaller vintage drinking glass. The floral runner was designed with the purple theme in mind as well as pulling together some the savory components in the charcuterie platters for an organic and rustic but elevated centerpiece. Interspersed throughout the runner are tall mercury candlesticks and smaller gold goblets of flower arrangements. Everything was set on a heavy charred oak table with matching benches and purple seating pillows for each setting.

The table was shot in two segments; one with the simple place setting and one with personal charcuterie platters and a signature drink, both designed by Railtown Catering. They worked with the colour palette to create a savory component to the shoot that meshed well with the organic feel of the florals and surroundings. The artisan antipasto platters featured Italian and Spanish meats such as salamis, prosciutto and mortadella, imported cheeses, marinated, grilled and chilled Mediterranean vegetables with raw vegetables and a house made sourdough. The signature drink (The Winter Wedding specialty cocktail) comprised of local wallflower gin, creme de cassis, fresh pressed beet and apple juice, rose water, nectar and topped with a sparking rose wine.

The goal for the bridal styling was simple while incorporating some of the purple palette without being too overpowering. The bride’s (model’s name was Anjani Varma) Ellebay gown (Gabrielle) was just the right amount of appeal suitable for a garden wedding so we kept her hair loose and the jewelry minimal to earrings, a bracelet and a ring from Gorjana. A skinny belt was added to accessorize the dress. The groom (model’s name was Owen Unruh, represented by Charles Stuart International) showcased a suit from Topman that featured a bit of purple in the suit jacket and it was paired with a purple tie for a little pop of colour. The bouquet was loose, organic and asymmetrical with quicksand roses, purple anenomes, artichokes, tulips, proteas and a host of greenery from maidenferns to olive foliage.

The final component of the shoot was the cake and savory display located in a stone hearth featuring a beautiful assortment of purple and green edibles along with a larger version of the charcuterie platter as well as the signature cocktail. Here, the golden plum concept comes together in the cake and decor items along with the garden element of the stone backdrop. The colours are rich and inviting. Some floral branches lean towards the cake, mimicking the shape of the arch. For the final few shots, the top tier of the cake was cut to reveal a bit of complimentary colour inside.

Neutral Bohemian Wedding Editorial

Wedding Design

We’ve seen our fair share of bohemian inspiration mixed with bright colors (which will always hold a special place in our hearts), but today’s styled shoot from Kim James Photography, Lele Chan, and Celsia Floral takes on the boho look with a neutral color palette we just can’t resist. Ivories and taupes commingle with gold and blush pink for a look that’s purely elegant and awfully inspiring!

From the photographer, Kim James Photography: In March I had the pleasure of joining a fabulous group of other talented photographers for the Boheme Workshop in Vancouver, BC. It was hosted at the Historic Hycroft Manor. The incredible architecture combined with the beautiful decor made for a photographer’s dream shoot. The workshop was put on by Vasia Weddings and Artiese Studios. They had a amazing vision and brought it to life. They hand picked a long list of incredible vendors to be a part of the workshop.

City Glam Vancouver Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

When you have a pet as cute as Robyn and Dave’s French Bulldog Lola, you just can’t fight the urge to include her in your wedding day. Christie Graham Photography, Smitten Events, and Delovely Creative were more than happy to accommodate Lola’s presence both in the wedding day itself and in the event decor, from the place cards to the dessert bar to the actual ceremony!

From the event planners, Smitten Events: Robyn & Dave love their French Bulldog, Lola, just about as much as they love each other. When it came to planning the decor elements for their wedding at Brix Restaurant & Wine Bar in Vancouver, BC, they made sure that Lola was well represented. Images of French Bulldog’s adorned signage, took the form of place cards, looked regal on wine bottles and even guarded the sweets tables as statuettes. Add to this element Robyn’s love for all things black, gold and polka-dotted, and their elegant, intimate wedding came together in a beautiful way.

Robyn, who is a wedding planner with Smitten Events, worked tirelessly to ensure that every little detail of their wedding celebration was not only special for her and Dave, but for their 65 guests. A circle ceremony in the courtyard under a canopy of cafe lights, family style tables done up in black and gold polka dots, vintage brass vessels filled with jewel toned florals and tons of candlelight made their wedding extraordinary for friends and family. Guests enjoyed custom cocktails and dined on a gourmet, four-course meal, then were treated to an epic sweets table which included Robyn’s Mom’s homemade apple pies among the selection of favourite desserts. Candies were displayed artfully on a vintage bar cart and the couple’s last name, Lemon, was recognized with details like lemon candy favours and a sparkly marquee sign. It’s hard to pick just one favourite element of Robyn & Dave’s wedding but perhaps the sweetest was the way they included Lola. Not only was Lola’s image a common theme, Lola herself marched proudly down the aisle as part of the processional and stood by as Robyn & Dave said, “I Do!”

Sail Away With Me Inspiration with Ginger Creative

Wedding Design

Maybe it’s because I grew up by the water, but I never tire of seeing a beach wedding done right. White Willow Photography, a new leaf floral design, and Ginger Creative put together this beautiful styled shoot set on the shores of Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, and it serves as a fantastic reminder as to why the beach will always be a romantic destination.

From the stationery designer, Carrie of Ginger Creative: “Let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.” The inspiration for this shoot came from the soft tones and romance of the sea. Set on an amazing sailboat, on the shores of Lake Okanagan White Willow Photography captured the intimacy of the bride and groom. In a heart stopping dress from Bliss Bridal, the bride had her look completed by Jenny McKinney Makeup Artist.

A stunning head table made on a vintage washed up door was created in the soft romantic color pallet by Vintage Origami. Set with teal colored service, vintage silverware and enhanced with seashells, driftwood and greenery, the amazing florals from a new leaf floral design set the tone of the table. The cake from Sweet on you Cups and Cakes was a hand painted teal ombre topped with white coral and surrounded with sea glass. Invitations and day of stationery from Ginger Creative used soft typography and were printed on textured paper with torn edges.

Canadian Garden Wedding at Starling Lane Vineyard

Garden Weddings

The bride from today’s wedding describes her vision more perfectly than we could ever hope to — “a full day of love and laughter and beauty with our dear ones in a cozy, organic setting.” Erica and Andrew exchanged vows on picturesque grounds in Victoria, British Columbia, with the always-wonderful Shari + Mike Photographers and Rook & Rose making their vision a perfect reality. Could you imagine a more perfect ceremony spot?

From the bride, Erica: We wanted our wedding to be a holistic celebration – a full day of love and laughter and beauty with our dear ones in a cozy, organic setting. We loved the idea of being married on the Island, in amongst the trees, and when we discovered Starling Lane, we knew that it was the perfect fit. Every space was so full of life, character and color – the shaded groves, the lush rose garden, the tall grass field, the rustic barn covered in vines and, our favorite, the whimsical glass greenhouse. It was an ideal canvas for us to work with.

I curated the visual design of our wedding, handpicking every piece. I loved creating a romantic and intimate feel using soft fabrics, watercolors, vibrant florals, calligraphy, and candlelight. I wanted everything to feel intentional and cohesive, inviting our guests to feel at home. For months I collected vintage furniture and decor and worked closely with our florist. It was really important to me to have our flowers as a focal point. The exceptionally creative team at Rook & Rose captured our vision completely. It was absolutely magical.

We also had a strong vision for our ceremony. We wanted to design each element with our understanding of love & marriage at the center. After walking down the aisle, my parents blessed us rather than “giving me away”. We had two officiants. They shared the role of leading us through a carefully crafted liturgy that emphasized our empowering, peace-loving partnership. Andrew and I wrote a set of collective vows that we read to each other, allowing us to mutually commit to one another. We also wanted to show the importance of our relationship as part of a greater whole, a larger community. We made space to sing and partake of communion together with our gathered loved ones. From our entrance to our exit, music artistically tied it all together, giving us the opportunity to share another integral part of both our lives. Listening to an acoustic hymn performed by our dear friends, Jordan and Jocelyn, was one of my favorite sacred moments.

Feasting and fellowship followed. Andrew and I wanted to share our love of fresh food in a unique way. After an afternoon of cheese, loaves, honey and berries, we gathered for a time of meaningful toasts and a lively family-style dinner. Our caterer, The London Chef, helped us create a menu filled with our favorites prepared in a simple yet elegant manner. We wanted our food to be full of color, healthy and whole. Andrew and I also made a playlist of our favorite folk love songs to play while everyone relaxed and enjoyed the meal. We committed to mingling from table to table during the dessert. The evening of festivities concluded with dancing. It was the perfect way to end the day. Seeing all the silly moves and smiles gave us more joy than we could have imagined. We are so thankful that we were able to spend so much quality time with our guests. It was something we will never forget.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Take the time to define your values and then allow them to guide you in your preparations. You can easily become swept up in the chaos of trying to do everything, please everyone, and achieve every expectation when you are not grounded in what is most important to you. When you align the details of your day with your values, you can infuse each moment with meaning. See each decision you make as an opportunity to be intentional. Despite popular opinion, your wedding doesn’t need to be trendy. It needs to reflect you and the one you love. It should reveal your heart.

The Heart Behind It

Modern Tropical Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

We’ve seen it so many times now that it’s pretty much a given — Delovely Creative just knows how to create gorgeous events. This modern tropical wedding inspiration shoot brings beach-y styling to an industrial setting, for a styled shoot that ends up being nothing short of honest to goodness perfection with the added help of Blush Wedding Photography!

modern tropical wedding inspiration - photo by Blush Wedding Photography http://ruffledblog.com/modern-tropical-wedding

From the photographer, Kristy of Blush Wedding Photography: Our shoot idea explored romantic meets tropical with hints of geometric styling. When the term “romantic” is used, often vintage elements come to mind, so the goal of this shoot was to infuse ethereal romance with modern, off beat style. The team wanted to pull from the current geometric tend, without it being hard or too overly edgy.

Additionally, Vancouver can be a grey place at times, leaving brides wistfully dreaming of a sunny tropical backdrop. Use of protea, tillandsia and quirky tropical fruit in the decor styling, add a nod to the tropics, while embracing a down to earth, west coast feel. The dress, pulled from Vancouver’s The Block, ads to the clean modern feel of the shoot, and allows the subtly tropical palette to shine through. By blending industrial design elements and architecture with dreamy lighting, raw natural crystals and punchy colours, it creates a totally unique vibe, perfect for the urban stylish bride.

North Arm Farm Wedding

Rustic Weddings

Photos by:

The Nickersons

How can you go wrong with a bride who wants her wedding attire styled after a classic Grace Kelly gown? Natasshia has always loved the stylish white dress worn by Grace in To Catch a Thief, so Ivy & Aster’s “Oh Joy” was a perfect pick to duplicate the look. The Nickersons captured Natasshia in just this gown and the rest of the day’s festivities with her love, Garrett. Let’s dive in!

north arm farm wedding - photo by The Nickersons http://ruffledblog.com/north-arm-farm-wedding

From the bride, Natasshia: I wanted our day to be the best day ever with lots of our personality shining through all the little details! It started out with finding the perfect venue! We love the mountains and we couldn’t have asked for a better background! It was important to us to keep things local. From the food, to the beers, and even the homemade jam as wedding favours. We wanted our guests to genuinely have a great time, making it as memorable for them as it was for us! I’ve always loved that scene in “To Catch a Thief” with Grace Kelly and knew that my dress would be of similar style. I went with Ivy & Aster’s Oh Joy dress, a clean and classic silhouette. I was pleased to find out that it had pockets! I did minimal accessorizing but had fun by choosing Badgley Mischka’s Randall shoes in rose satin!

A majority of the decor was actually handmade — from the wedding invitations, signage, centerpieces, bow ties, and the bouquets too! To cut down costs, I proposed we make our bouquets too. Garrett was such a good sport about agreeing on all my ideas even if it meant he had to do a lot of work! We started with a few prototypes, playing with different papers which we ended up using as our centerpieces. Once we got our technique down, we perfected the bridesmaids’ bouquets as well as mine! I’ve been practicing my calligraphy and wanted to incorporate some of it for the day of. I hand painted the welcome sign, directions, menu, seating chart, as well as signs for the drinks and dessert table. We finished them off by hanging with yarn and branches.

Favourite moments from the day included waking up to the sound of the rain outside the window, but it didn’t matter because I was getting married to the man I love! As we were getting ready, I got a text from our coordinator saying “The sun is winning!”. The rest of the day was perfect and you’d never know it rained that morning! Right before he walked me down the aisle, my dad gave me a huge hug and kiss – which got me even more emotional. Also, sitting back together as husband and wife, and watching all our friends and family that came to celebrate with us.

Victoria Art Gallery Wedding

Modern Weddings

Photos by:

Ameris Photography

If retro is your thing, you’re going to love this next wedding. Amy and Matt were able to turn retro inspiration into modern chic, thanks to their own talented hands and minds. Captured by Ameris Photography, who caught every detail (of which there are plenty). Make sure you keep an eye out for the time capsule coordinated by the bridal party for the bride and groom – such a great idea!

victoria art gallery wedding - photo by Ameris Photography - http://ruffledblog.com/victoria-art-gallery-wedding

From the bride, Amy: We wanted our wedding to feel intimate and representative of US – modern, downtown city feel with lots of DIY personal touches. Most of the wedding was DIY from the invitations to the favours. We did the graphic design for the save-the-dates, invites (inspired by Christian Robinson‘s work) and RSVPs and had them printed at a local print shop. I purchased the dress as a sample off the rack and completely rebuilt the skirt and added multiple layers of fabric. We made two panels for the backdrop that were collaged initials (A & M) made of black/white photos of each of us – A was all Amy photos and M was all Matt photos. The easels were made by my Dad. We designed the programs ourselves and just printed them out on a colour printer. We also put together the bells for guests by gluing bells to craft sticks and adding a ribbon.

For the reception, all the table numbers, seating cards were made from old library book loan cards, vintage 2nd hand shot glasses, chargers were old vinyl records with our menu pasted on top of the inner circle. Table floral were billy buttons and grass from Flowers On Top (Victoria) mixed with curly willow from the bride’s mother’s garden, arranged in mixed glass vessels collected over months by the bride and groom. Mother of the bride and groom composed the arrangements on the day-of. The guest book was a vintage dictionary – guests found a word that made them think of us, and then signed their names and wrote their message on that word’s page. We had red and white wine made locally and labelled them with our own designed labels, printed locally.

Vancouver Wilderness Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

I think the only thing more romantic than a wedding in the woods has to be one surrounded by gorgeous waterfalls. Mathias Fast Photography scouted this area near his parents’ cabin, and knew right away it would be an ideal spot for a wedding shoot. He soon came back with memorymaker events, Meuse Boutique, and Garden Party Flowers in tow, who created pure magic.

mountain wedding shoots // photo by Mathias Fast Photography via ruffledblog.com

From the photographer, Mathias: Ever since I first explored the area around my parents’ cabin in the Nahatlach Valley I’ve planned to go back with models and vendors in tow for a styled shoot. The massive waterfall, stunning views down the valley and the smooth as glass lake make for an incredible setting. Local Vancouver vendors came together to add a touch of elegance to this rustic wilderness location.

Canadian Greenhouse Wedding

Rustic Weddings

Any bride who can buck wedding traditions is a prize in my book. Instead of having a traditional wedding cake and cake cutting, Kara and Regan decided to serve Dilly Bars from Dairy Queen and offer a candy bar for their guests. Thanks to Sharalee Prang Photography for sharing her gorgeous photos with us!

greenhouse wedding ideas

From the bride, Kara: We loved everything about our wedding day. The venue, the flowers, the crafts, the weather, but the people were what made that day rule. I had few times where the blur of the day stopped and I looked around and saw people eating burritos and dilly bars, socializing, dancing, and looking pretty dang good. Regan and I love our community and were so honoured by the people who spent that day with us.

I wanted to do something that I hadn’t seen on any blog, or pinterest (its hard!) and since Regan and I love cool mugs, my mom and I spent a lot of time finding the perfect vintage and ceramic mugs at thrift stores. We had a huge display set up so when guests arrived at the reception they could pick their own mug and fill it with a hot drink of their choice.

From the photographer, Sharalee: From a vendor’s perspective, I loved how they involved and honored their families throughout the day, making sure they all knew how much they were appreciated. The bride’s dad is one of the owners of the garden centre and he bent over backwards to make it everything his daughter wanted it to be. They were also incredibly fun to hang out with!

Romantic Weddings

Today’s couple met as they were drifting upon the Caribbean Sea — groom Gavin was the captain, while Nadia worked on the ship’s crew. Ashley of Spread Love Events took this theme and ran with it, implementing nautical details and the couple’s love story throughout the wedding day. Rebecca Amber Photography took the reins capturing the big day, making one sweet Vancouver wedding story!

indoor garden weddings

From the bride, Nadia: Gavin and I both wanted an intimate, simple, fun and special day that we could share with our close family and friends. The thought of a wedding would sometimes overwhelm us, as we both didn’t want something too traditional or to have too much attention on ourselves. We decided to instead think of the day as a chance to throw a party and nice evening out for those closest to us. This shaped our decisions and made the planning process more fun.

Our planner really helped our vision of the day become a reality. We wanted to the day to be classic, romantic, personal and beautiful. Our main theme was to incorporate our love of the sea and sailing. There were hints of nautical decor and some nods to the Caribbean, which is where we met. Our colour scheme included classic and bright colours such as navy and coral. Although the wedding was in spring, and we were expecting rain, we incorporated the bright colours to give us a feel of summer, our favourite time of year. Luckily for us, we got a summer day in spring!

One of our favourite memories was the time we spent beforehand, getting our photos taken at one of favourite beaches in the city. The weather was so beautiful with the cherry blossoms and flowers in full bloom. We did our first look under the trees and it was so special to have that time together before the ceremony. Our other favourite memories are of the amazing speeches are friends and family made, and our first dance in the courtyard, surrounded by our loved ones holding sparklers.

What advice do you have, if any, for brides planning their wedding day now? The classic advice really does ring true. Don’t stress about the small stuff. Everything works out in the end and your day will be special to you no matter what happens. The planning and day itself go by so fast, that you will look back and wish you were in the moment and soaked as much of it in as possible. Also, hiring a planner saved our lives. If it is possible with your budget, we highly recommend it. Our planner was such a great support. She kept us focused, made sure we were on track and took care of all the details, decor, organizing and scheduling, down to every minute on the day itself. We knew we would have lots of guests coming in from out of town, and not having to stress about all those tasks, meant we could enjoy our time with everyone leading up to and after the day. With her in charge the day went so smoothly, was planned perfectly and styled beautifully.

From Ashley of Spread Love Events:If Kate Spade and Pottery Barn planned a party together, we imagined it might look a little something like this! We dressed up our table in dots, classic stripes and gold, and Celsia Florist blew us away with the gorgeous floral arrangements of peonies, anemones and ranunculus. We designed the stationary and chalk board to carry through the theme, bringing a whimsical element to this elegant and luxurious table setting. The chairs and bench were collected from our favourite Vancouver local design store, The Cross (aren’t the carved chairs amazing?). And as a special gift to all the brides we go the chance to visit with at the show, paperwhite bulbs were packaged in hand stamped muslin bags with instructions on how to let them grow. It was a fun day filled with gold, gorgeous blooms and blushing brides to be.

Artsy Victoria Garden Wedding

Garden Weddings

Photos by:

This wedding from Ameris has it all: a little bit bohemian, a little bit woodsy, and a bit modern for just the perfect blend of chic wedding style. Add in a perfect bouquet from Cartref Gardens, portraits of the newlyweds peacefully lounging in a canoe, and a wedding gown fit for a princess and we couldn’t be happier!

newlyweds in canoe

From the bride, Laura: We envisioned a woodland style for the wedding. We wanted our wedding to truly represent us so obviously we wanted the wedding to be about what’s important to us… Jesus, our love + having lots of fun! James is a musician so music was very important to us as well. We worked hard on picking out every song involved. Our colours were mint + peach with a touch of gold.

I made the coffee filter flowers, bird cake toppers, giant pom background, gold sparkly J + L letters, table numbers, spray painted pine cones & wooden letters, fabric altar, wooden signs, guest book, flower girl headbands, photo booth props, birdseed favors. My maid of honour made the guys bow ties + boutonnières. A friend made all the wooden rounds.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Be very organized! (If you’re not organized, hire a wedding planner! Seriously.) But for those of you who are organized… do DIYs well in advance so the last week isn’t too crazy. I planned a night with my girlfriends months in advance and we tackled all those coffee filter flowers! Keep in mind to make the planning process fun! Don’t go all bridezilla on your bridesmaids. No one wants to do a bunch of crafts with a drill sergeant.

Don’t ever forget that you get to marry the love of your life…that is an amazing thing! Keep him involved with the plans + DIYS… We planned almost everything together. James did all the manly things, like saw wood for all the signs + table numbers. And on the day of your wedding leave all the plans with a trusted friend (I recommend giving them a minute by minute rundown) or wedding planner… then, let go and just focus on being completely there. Be happy + incredibly thankful! Also, take some time as a couple (once the ceremony is done) to breathe for a moment. The wedding day goes by incredibly fast, so I highly recommend taking a moment to soak it in. Our photographer encouraged us to do this while we were in the boat. It was a pretty special moment.

British Columbia Beach Wedding

Beach Weddings

Photos by:

This Canadian wedding from Erin Wallis Photography is full of the creamiest pastels, frilly wedding cakes, and beach-y beauty beyond our wildest imaginations. Everything about this wedding is right out of our wedding dreams, from the bridesmaids dressed in white to the waterside ceremony.

From the bride, Steph: We met through a mutual friend but had our first kiss on the Lucky Bar dance floor in Victoria. We are both super into music, so when we lived in Victoria we went to Lucky Bar almost every Saturday. We always try to go to Lucky Bar when we are back in town with all of our friends and had our going away party there when we moved to SF.

British Columbia beach wedding

We chose Tofino because its our favorite place to get away on the west coast. We go there a few times a year to surf, spa and get away from the city. We have been going there since we met and both really love it there. I think we both knew we would always get married there and wanted to share its beauty with our friends and family.

The wedding palette was really inspired by my dress. I found it online right when we got engaged and the blush color and simplicity of it really inspired the entire wedding theme.

We wanted the environment to feel rustic and truly west coast, so we used elements like wood risers, natural textures, wild flowers, and had lavender scented candles that made the whole room smell amazing.

Our reception venue had huge vaulted ceilings, so to make it feel more intimate we strung globe lights throughout the whole hall. The guys got really creative with this, as we weren’t allowed to string anything from the roof. It turned out amazing and created a romantic feeling of being outdoors.

My favorite part of the day was standing at the top of the stairs overlooking the beach with my dad right before we walked down the aisle. It was a really calm moment where I could overlook the whole ceremony and see everyone I love gathered on the beach to celebrate with us. I thought I would be nervous, but when Bon Iver’s “Holocene” came on, and we started to walk down the aisle, everyone else faded away and I was filled with excitement and happiness that I was about to marry the man of my dreams in the most beautiful place in the world.

From Erin Wallis Photography: She’s a little shy, super sweet and oozes stylish awesomeness. He’s sincere, genuine and makes you want to know more. When I arrived and laid eyes on Steph’s blush colored Ivy and Aster dress, and the bridesmaids white dresses, I almost jumped out of my skin with excitement. Everything was dreamy. They were married at a low tide on Tofino’s picturesque South Chesterman beach. Living in San Francisco they would venture to Tofino as often as possible, to surf, spa and relax. They both knew they would always get married there as they wanted to share its beauty with friends and family. Exactly as imagined they were surrounded with the adoring eyes of their cherished family and friends. They wound up with the most magical wedding weather combination in history. Sunshine and fog. Perfectly West Coast. Perfectly dreamy and so well suited to their sweet, whimsical wedding. It was a wedding that brilliantly displayed that with your wedding, anything is possible.

Tofino, BC comes with a distinct air of magic, and coupled with the intense love of a stunning couple… amazing florals, the thoughtful and whimsical colours, raw oyster bar, photo booth and a seriously fun wedding party… it was a combination that dreams are truly made of. Everything was executed flawlessly even the details out of their control, the fog rolling in around their ceremony, the sunlight peeking through at them at all the right moments and the surfers riding the waves in the background. A breathtaking reflection of such a laid back, meaningful and romantic celebration of a truly unique and lovely couple.

Purple and Pink Wedding Flowers

Wedding Design

Photos by:

The second we heard from Bailey’s Brides that they wanted to go after a bold color palette, we were hooked! Pulling inspiration from an Italian café and rich hues of purples, pinks, and teals, this shoot is chock full of fresh floral decor from Just Fresh Concept and a yummy cake thanks to Le Gateau Bake Shop.

pink purple decor

From the stylist and planner, Bailey’s Brides: Just like anyone involved with weddings, in any way, as a vendor, bride, groom or even a guest, everyone loves to see something new, something grand, bold, romantic and inspiring. When Denise and I got to talking about what we wanted to do for a shoot we wanted to push the envelope a bit and try some new colours to inspire the new bride and groom. Our inspiration was Italy and it came from the amazing venue we used. The venue (Vinicis Café and Art Gallery) is actually a café run by a local woman from Italy, the walls are adorned with her paintings in rich purples, teals, luscious yellows and exotic blues. We could only picture ourselves on the hills of Italy enjoying a romantic wedding in this setting.

To get the drama and romance of the shoot portrayed, we put the model in darker, seductive and rich romantic makeup, and her dress carried the frills of an exotic wedding but with the glam of sophistication. The flowers brought all of this to life in high drama, with large blooms, exotic flowers and rich colours. The added touches of an over the top luxurious couch, high end glitter heels and stunning jewellery only added to the exotic feel and the small personal touches such as the Mr. and Mrs. coasters and the “Bride” hanger added the personal and DIY touch that every bride craves. The table settings, a sweet heart table for two was surrounded but the lush foliage of Italy…

The bride and groom sit framed in luxury as they sit seated at a Tuscan inspired setting, with dark teal, shell chargers with the added glam of a solid silver glitter charger. Lace napkins, coloured beads and teal candles added the subtle rich and romantic feel. The idea behind the shoot was not only to inspire brides to think a little out of the box, to have fun, be a little dramatic, but it was also a way to introduce the idea of having a destination wedding in your own backyard.

We’re always so delighted to see weddings between two designers, such as this stunner sent to us from Blue Window Creative. Bride Sarah is a graphic designer, groom Trent is an architect, and their conjoined style is infused with a modern sensibility and fresh perspective. Sarah set to work three months prior to the wedding, crafting ceramic bud vases as favors for all of her guests — love!

modern wedding vancouver

From the bride, Sarah: Trent and I first met in high school 13 years ago. Trent proposed at a beautiful B&B in the south of France (in our secret south of France location) so we really wanted to capture elements of our French travels. Great space, food, wine, music, dancing and of course an amazing photographer! Family & friends are very important to us and we wanted to make sure it was a celebration for everyone. We chose to have a cocktail style reception so that guests could mingle, eat & socialize. Design is also important to Trent and I – Trent owns his own architectural business H:M:S Design Inc. and I am a graphic designer & co-owner of the graphic design company Phlo Design Inc.

We knew that we didn’t want the colour scheme to be the main focus so we chose a black, white & gold palette. The entire wedding planning was a creative process and the details were very important – everything from designing the invitations to starting over three months before the wedding to hand make our favours. Pottery has been a hobby of mine for many years and I wanted to create a personal touch by making over 70 porcelain bud vases. The bottom was stamped with our initials & our wedding date.

We knew that we wanted to get married outside but still have an intimate atmosphere. We chose Ferguson Point in Stanley Park which overlooks the beautiful Vancouver English Bay. The drive through the park to the point is beautiful and we wanted all of our out of town guests to experience its beauty. When choosing our reception venue we had a very clear picture of what the ideal location would be like. We wanted the food to be amazing, the architecture & space to be dynamic.

Our reception venue was the MARKET by Jean-Georges at the Shangri-La Hotel. The architecture and interior finishes were beautiful so we chose to use minimal decoration. The two ceremony flower arrangements were placed on the dessert table & a few small vintage medicine bottles with flowers were placed on the tables. To create drama and height for the guest book/favour table we had an arrangement of maple branches to create visual interest. We ordered candles from Coqui Coqui a boutique hotel & perfumery in Tulum, Mexico. The staff at the Shangri-La were wonderful, professional & worked with us to help create our vision over 9 months leading up to the wedding day.

This next wedding is truly a handmade affair. The bride, Amanda, hastily busied the hands of her closest friends and family to assemble a wedding akin to 4-H club meetings of yore. We’re absolutely smitten with the charming use of “best in show” ribbons, adorning different elements from the cake to the bride’s little sister! Don’t forget to take a peek at all details in the gallery!

From the bride, Amanda: Just around the same time we started planning the wedding we came across some old family slides of Tom’s dad participating in a 4-H club fair. We liked the hodge-podge, under designed look and feel and set out to replicate it.

The whole thing was a DIY project. We had our hands all over every little part of the day… well except maybe for the food. The crafty things we did included invitations, letterpress mini-menus, best guest ribbon awards, family member awards (i.e. Best Little Sister), succulent terrarium centerpieces, overhead projector slides, “best” cake, dessert competition trophies, bunting, the letter writing station…

Indie Canadian Wedding II

Earlier today we shared the getting ready and ceremony part of Alison and Ryan’s indie chic wedding, now we’re back with their wedding reception. Both Alison and Ryan took on different DIY projects, as well as worked together on other projects such as the reception seating chart boards, seed bombs, ceremony programs, photos and sketches on fence and along clothesline, and cd favors. The boutonnieres were made by Alison. Thanks Jamie Delaine and Alison for sharing!

Words of wisdom from the bride: Collect images, colours and ideas that inspire you and lump them all together on a board. this helps to see if your ideas work well together or not! mixing styles, patterns and colours that seem disparate might actually work well together and help transform your wedding style from one-dimensional to something fun and unexpected! (we mixed plaid, feathers and anatomical hearts, and it seemed to work really well!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I just got back from Jamaica last night, and I am still swooning over the crystal clear waters. I can’t wait to share photos of it with you all. So I am starting the week with a beautiful beachfront wedding all the way from British Columbia, Canada. Alison and Ryan’s wedding is a DIY festival full of sweet details. Alison mentioned she has been “following Ruffled for the past 2 years since I’ve been engaged”, which makes my heart full of glee! Shot by photographer Jamie Delaine.

From Alison, the bride: We wanted our wedding to be vintage-inspired, yet contemporary. We wanted it to feel as though we had found all of our decorations in our grandparents attics/basements and thrown in what modern elements we had lying around our homes. We wanted to add our personal style and touch to as many elements as possible so our guests would feel as though this truly was OUR wedding.

Sweet Handmade Dress

Real Weddings

Photos by:

Vince and Amanda’s Vancouver wedding by Ophelia Photography was a light-hearted bash filled with lots of color and personal touches. My favorite personal touch has to be Amanda’s darling dress. It was handmade by her mother, and I think it turned out beautifully!

More from the bride, Amanda:

Vince and I wanted something very Alice in Wonderland tea party/50’s garden party/fairytale. Stylish and somewhat traditional but still very colorful and non-formal. We wanted everyone to have a really good time and share in the excitement we felt!

 Vintage Wedding Dress

Our ceremony location was the Minoru chapel in Richmond BC. This place is just cute as anything! We had wanted to get married outside, but because we live in Vancouver you can never predict the rain (and there is a LOT of it in Vancouver). So we chose this adorable little chapel.

 Tattooed Rock 'n Roll wedding

I’m proud to say that my Mom made my dress! I designed what I wanted and she made it come to life. I had looked everywhere for what I wanted but couldn’t. Thankfully my Mom has been making so many of my clothes since I was young and she did such a fantastic job on my wedding dress! It was also so great to have something so personalized. It meant the world to me!

 Vintage bride with tattoos

For our wedding cake we didn’t want traditional wedding cake because… well.. have you eaten traditional wedding cake? Yuck! We both love the mousse cakes from the Chinese bakery’s around town so we bought 3 different shapes/types of cakes. We borrowed a cake tray from a friend and decorated it with fake birds and butterflies. It was so colorful matching our theme and even more delicious!

 Vintage 50's Wedding

I am all for the DIY, but know your limit!! I’m extremely easy going and still managed to feel the stress of taking too many things on myself. Biggest example was that I had refused to have my family set up my reception hall by themselves. I wanted to be there to help. Of course everything was not happening right on time and I managed to get back to the hotel with about half an hour to get ready for the wedding itself. Lucky for me I was far too excited about getting married to get too stressed out. But I can see how a lot of woman would be flipping out. Know your limit!
