Eclectic Barr Mansion Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

Photos by:

Alixann Loosle

Almost any wedding at Austin’s Barr Mansion is going to be a winner, especially when it’s photographed by the incomparable Alixann Loosle Photography. But when you add in a reception with mood lighting and a bride wearing a purple patterned Zac Posen gown, I’m going to be floored. Take special note of Kaki and Robbie’s ceremony under the trees – one of our favorites this year.

From the bride, Kaki: We wanted a Soulful and Spiritual gathering of friends and family witnessing and supporting us in the commitment of our vows and celebration. It was a non traditional wedding celebration, marching to the beat of our own drums and our day was a true reflection of just that. Our theme was Victorian Vogue. Oriental rugs, church pews, religious candles etc… Evoked the feeling of a catholic cathedral, set amongst the trees. No color scheme.

Barr Mansion Texas Wedding

Vintage Weddings

It’s no secret we love weddings from Austin’s Barr Mansion here at Ruffled. It has the perfect mix of old world charm and funky whimsy we can never get enough of! Photographer Lauren Larsen captured Ashley and Jason’s wedding day expertly, along with the talents of The Nouveau Romantics and Vera Green Productions. We’re madly in love with the bride’s gorgeous short number!

From the bride, Ashley: I really let the setting dictate a lot more of the style than I thought I would. I always knew our southern roots and my vintage-modern aesthetic would play a large role whatever the venue. We always wanted the occasion to feel comfortable, but never casual.

Even though fall really doesn’t begin until November in Texas (or at least it doesn’t feel like it does!), I really wanted to play up a fall wedding. I did this through the color choices of my flowers and bridesmaids dresses and through our menu planning. I had a beautiful deep aubergine with a punch of chartreuse in mind for colors. When I found the perfect bridesmaid dress to base everything around I knew it was meant to be.

The escort cards with the handkerchiefs were something I nabbed from another wedding. We actually ended up “making” many of the kerchiefs from great fabric we found at a quilting store in Austin. I hand-wrote the escort cards while my bridesmaids cut the fabric and tided the ribbons and my florist added the finishing touch with the buds. It was quite the team effort. my wonderful groom also designed the menus that we placed on the tables.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Figure out what’s really important to the two of you from the beginning. For example: food and drink were a big deal to Jason and I. We knew we wanted to spend a large portion of our budget there. Remember that photos are forever, no one will remember if you chose the less expensive champagne (as long as you don’t run out!) Take the week off before your wedding if you can. You’ll be amazed at the last minute things that pop up, and you’ll want some time to transition out of work mode.

Vintage Texan Wedding

Vintage Weddings

Continuing with the theme of vintage weddings from this morning’s post, we have a vintage Texas wedding at the oh-so-gorgeous Barr Mansion. The bride, Laura, and her husband Will allowed their love of all things wine and wineries to guide much of their wedding, and it’s reflected all over — from their wine cork and grape centerpieces to the implementation of the wine box ceremony. Thanks to Jackie of Jackie Ray Photography for sending this gem over!

From the bride, Laura: We wanted our wedding to be a simply elegant, casual party with great wine. More than anything, we wanted everything about our wedding to be personalized and very “us”. If we didn’t like something, we didn’t include it in the wedding.

Since we had an outdoor ceremony, I wanted to choose colors that would complement the greenery of the venue. We chose to go mostly with lilacs and “earthy tones.”

We love to visit local wineries, and enjoy learning about wine, so we wanted our hobby to be represented in our wedding. We included a wine box ceremony in the wedding, and a lot of our inspiration for the reception decor came from local Texas wineries.

Any advice? Realize that your wedding will not be perfect, no matter how much you plan. Something will go wrong, something will be out of place, and someone will be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Enjoy your wedding day, and try not to stress out about the minor imperfections.

Wedding Songs:
Music was a very important part of our wedding, and we spent a long time picking out these songs. We feel that music can really “set the mood” of a wedding, and we chose songs that we love, and that we felt represented the “feel” that we wanted our wedding to have.
Processional: Acoustic versions of “In my Life” by the Beatles, and “Stand by Me”, by Ben E. King. I walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis.
Recessional: “All you Need is Love,” by the Beatles.
First dance: “You are the Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne.
