Villa San Juan Capistrano Wedding

Vintage Weddings

Photos by:

We love that today’s bride and groom took inspiration for their wedding decor from their favorite destination (and honeymoon spot!), France. This wedding is Old World French style meets relaxed California elegance, and has not only one stunning bride but also one of the most dapper grooms we’ve featured this year. Our thanks go out to Ashley Rose Photography for sharing this wedding with us!

From the bride, Rachel: Our inspirations for our day came from our love of “old world” character. We love antiques and try to go to flea markets as much as we can. It’s all about if it speaks to us and makes us smile, there’s just something about the history tied to old things that we can’t resist.. and I love old things mixed with florals and beauty.

From the playlist to the candle holders, we wanted everything to speak about us and our style. We took a lot of time to create things that spoke to us – I made all of the napkins for the tables (a labor of love) in all different patterns for each table. I think it brought more character to the dinner atmosphere than just having plain linens. Everything that we created had some sort of French influence to it too – but old world French style – think handmade lace, ornate props, old books… shabby chic mixed with rustic French.

We love old music and films, and a lot of our songs came from the 1920s-1940s era mixed but mixed with new songs as well. We both love France and Jared visited me there when I did a study abroad program. The culture and the beauty in all things around us really inspired our “french influence”, so much so we decided to go there on our honeymoon. My mom and friends helped by bringing in the French countryside as well by making peach jam for each guest to take home. We wanted all of this for our wedding – AND for everyone to feel relaxed and at home.

The most memorable moment of the day for me, was when Jared gave me a ring that was unexpected (I thought I was only going to have one ring, my “engagement ring”). I was so surprised and stunned – it is a moment that I will never forget. Our first look was beautiful too and it was so amazing to just take each other in, we really felt relieved to see each other and to just have a few precious moments alone before everything started. It was really a magical and joyous moment for us.

Pâtisserie Inspired Table Shoot

I am so excited to finally share this shoot! Melissa of The Loveliest Day will be working with me on a series of mini design shoots in the upcoming months. She is an aspiring Event Designer who is more like a pro than aspiring in my opinion. I recommend brides booking her now. For this shoot, Melissa proposed a Patisserie inspired dessert table, and I immediately jumped on it. Big thanks to everyone involved: Jen of Found, Melody of My Sweet and Saucy, Jane of Olive Hue, and Ashley Rose of Ashley Rose Photography for the great images!

I will let Mel take it from here: The inspiration behind this patisserie brunch bridal shower shoot was Ladurée and the other tea and pastry salons of Paris. For this shoot we created a dessert table and a tea bar, both ideas that can be easily re-created!

I wanted to include some fresh flowers, but opted to keep it simple. I displayed the flowers in galvanized metal pails to mimic the look of street side flower shops in Paris. I also added a few single stems and mini bouquets here and there for a bit of added charm.

Melody posted a tutorial on how to frost the ruffle cake featured in this shoot. Click here to learn.

The ribbon curtains, which hung behind the dessert table, were inspired by an image of the gift packaging station at Ladurée. Rolls of pastel ribbons cascaded down the wall, ready to be snipped off and used to tie up a gorgeous package of fresh macarons. In between the ribbon curtains I hung a vintage window pane, which I painted white. To me, the window helped bring in the feeling of a Parisian storefront.

Melody of My Sweet and Saucy Shop whipped up some incredible confections for the dessert table! A mix of traditional French desserts like macarons, cream puffs, éclairs, madelines and fruit tarts, along with some one and two layer cakes and mini cupcakes. It was the perfect blend, and many of the desserts can be made at home, even if you’re not a master baker!

Jane of Olive Hue Paper Goods created some darling favor boxes. Perfect for guests to take home a few macarons or a colorful cream puff! The boxes were topped with some vintage mother of pearl buttons from my personal collection. You can add buttons like we did, or any other kind of accent you wish. The box has a lovely pattern, so it will also look great without additional accents if that’s the look you prefer! No matter what you choose, your guests will love these adorable favor boxes!

What are pastries without a delicious cup of tea? The tea bar we created offered several different kinds of tea. There was something for everyone, from a bold black tea to a mild herbal tea. Each variety of tea had its own custom colored label. The beautiful chalkboard menu, hand drawn by Jane of Olive Hue Paper Goods, identified which color tea tag coincided with each tea. Written across the top the chalkboard was “heure du thé”, which translates to tea time. Hot water was provided in a vintage silver pot. The table was topped off by a collection of vintage teacups and saucers. Cute little tags reading “sucré” were attached to the end of a toothpick and stuck into the top of sugar cubes. Just pick one up and stir it into your tea?
