Coastal Bride Wedding Editorial

Wedding Design

A beach-y bride meets bohemian style in this ever-so-dreamy editorial from Apryl Ann Photography and Michelle Lywood. One of our favorite aspects of this shoot is that the bouquet was inspired by an abstract painting, proving the possibilities for finding inspiration for your wedding day are truly endless. Amy Clarke‘s work on hair and makeup shines here, and we’d be kidding ourselves if we tried to deny our dreams of having her style us every day!

From the florist, Michelle Lywood: I had recently seen an abstract painting that was a beautiful blend of many different colors with no defined forms. As an artist, it reminded me that letting go of control and creating without boundaries can lead to unexpected results. My mindset was simply to find the best blooms available and anything that I was excited to work with regardless of my typical concerns when planning a design.

I came across miraculously large dark red tree peonies, apricot colored garden roses with intricate details in how their petals had bloomed, strikingly jewel toned purple clematis, and breathtakingly delicate rose bushes. I really let the flowers dictate where the design was going. The colors were a pretty unique combination, but I loved how each flower maintained its integrity and was able to shine while still working together as a whole in the bouquet. The softness of the rose bushes was the perfect juxtaposition against the coastal rocks. And when life hands you giant peonies, you celebrate with a bold headpiece. Everything came together beautifully, and the whole process felt refreshingly natural.

Romantic Hickory Street Annex Wedding

Romantic Weddings

This wedding has so much to love, so you better start preparing yourself right now. Apryl Ann Photography and Blue Lotus worked to make Danielle and Benjamin’s wedding day a magical event, and it’s a no-brainer to say they had total success. Truly, how stunning is that ceremony setup?

From the bride, Danielle: I had always envisioned a jazz band at my wedding so I kind of built the theme around that. It had an inviting classic elegance about it that really did make the whole night magical! The classic elements were subtle: skinny black ties and slim fitting suits, lace, the font on the invitations, twinkle lights and music choice. The venue, food, flowers and lighting made it feel very relaxed and accessible.

I told my bridesmaids to choose a dress in the neutral color palette (nude, blush, tan, cream, gold or silver). I really liked the way metallics looked with the neutral colors! It felt like winter without being Christmasy. The flowers gave the needed pop of color. My good friend Krista made the lace runner for the head table. My mom, sisters and I potted the individual succulents for each place setting as the wedding favor. Most everything else was outsourced as I planned the wedding from out of state haha!

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? 1. Don’t take out wedding stress on your fiance!!! The whole process is very taxing but it only makes things 10x worse if your relationship suffers for it. 2. Don’t procrastinate. Just don’t do it! 3. Delegate. It was really hard for me to do this. I was planning a wedding in Texas from North Carolina so I needed to trust my friends and family to handle things for me but it was really hard to give up control of every little detail. They were perfectly capable and did an amazing job, but I would have been a lot more relaxed if I had delegated more. You will drive yourself crazy if you don’t let people help you! I was even worried my fiance would put the stamps on the invitation crooked so I let him seal them but I put the stamps on haha! I promise I wasn’t a Bridezilla, just a little neurotic :).

Whimsical Travel Wedding

Whimsical Weddings

We always get a little giddy when Apryl Ann Photography pops by, always bringing in one gorgeous wedding after the other. This whimsical soiree is full of handmade touches, representing the groom’s job as a Naval Aviator and the long distance relationship between him and his bride, Christy. So to celebrate their numerous letters across the globe, they wanted to have travel and correspondence elements incorporated in their wedding.

Christy and Ryan are high school sweethearts about to embark on a life of travel and far-away correspondence due to the groom’s job as a Naval Aviator. Their life will be filled with postcards, letters and airplanes, all of which were apparent at their travel themed wedding on June 9, 2012. The bride and groom are both old souls, and vintage touches were spotted throughout the ceremony and reception.

The groom proposed at Hickory Street Annex, which made it easy to decide on a wedding reception venue. Both are Dallas natives and wanted to be married close to their families. The bride and groom were married at East Dallas Christian Church where the bride’s parents and grandparents were both married. Reception followed at Hickory Street Annex.

The bride has worked as an assistant wedding planner in both Florida and Oklahoma and planned her own wedding down to every detail. Since she was planning the wedding from afar, spreadsheets quickly became her new best friend. The couple moved twice during their engagement, but thankfully, the planning process was both smooth and fun. It was easy to find great vendors that all worked well together after stumbling upon Apryl Ann Photography and The Bell Jar.

Paper flowers and stationery were the showstoppers of the wedding. The bride worked hand-in-hand with ULuckyGirl to create the custom wedding suite including an invitation booklet, stationery set favors, Passport photo books and place card wooden airplanes. The bride’s love of handmade goodies and vintage objects were seen throughout the décor. Etsy was a big contributor at the wedding- the bride purchased hundreds of handmade flowers, the veil and painted TOMS shoes from Etsy.com.

Midsummer Night’s Dream Wedding Inspiration

Wedding Design

Photos by:

Few things conjure up the image of romance more quickly than Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The incredible design team of Bows and Arrows conjured up this styled shoot to celebrate the love and beauty found within its pages, with endless amounts of luscious flowers and candlelit spots, captured to perfection by Apryl Ann Photography.

midsummer nights dream wedding

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.
—Oberon describes Titania’s bower, where she sleeps.

From the stylist, Bows and Arrows: Shakespeare knew a thing or two about romance. Of all his works, “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream” best evokes the magic and romance of a summer wedding day. In this shoot we recreated that magic and whimsy through opulent florals, cakes and tarts worthy of the queen of fairies and a dress sent from the gods. White Rock Lake Park was chosen as the backdrop of the shoot to showcase the natural beauty of the wild south. As we all know there is nothing more extraordinary than a candlelit southern summer evening with your love, fireflies winking at you like fairies in the trees, and the smell of wild honeysuckle in the air.

We share a love for modern decor and wanted our wedding to bring in natural, bohemian touches while keeping things simple. As a wedding photographer, I knew I would be working with my favorite vendors and friends and wanted to give them direction but at the same time letting them have creative control to do what they do best. Bows + Arrows did an amazing job with our florals. They created a fresh-picked, bohemian vibe with mismatched elements such as cacti in gold pots, lush whimsical flowers spilling from black urns, air plants and succulents, and touches of turquoise, cobalt blue and green.

We knew we wanted to do a first look for many reasons but one big reason was to have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves at our party. We also decided to eat our dinner alone during cocktail hour. This was such a great idea! It was so romantic to have time by ourselves after bring married. Then we said our hello’s to everyone during dinner. Our first dance was to acoustic version “Big Me” by the Foo Fighters and the rest of the night was a dance party! We also opted out of traditions such as a bouquet toss and garter toss in order to spend more time on the dance floor :) Oh and lots of cafe lights!!!

Intimate Ballroom Wedding

Romantic Weddings

Photos by:

Ultra glamorous sans the fuss, ballroom wedding with a cozy feel. That’s how Emma and Craig’s wedding shot by Apryl Ann Photography could be described in a nutshell. The different shades of blue with sparkly gold touches set the tone for the day, which included Toms shoes in glittery blue for the bridesmaids for the reception!

From the bride, Emma: As soon as Craig and I got engaged, we started planning the wedding. Actually, let’s be honest, we started talking about the aesthetic of the wedding before we got engaged. We did not want the typical ballroom wedding, which is why we chose the Aldredge House. We love the vintage feel of the house, and we loved that it felt much more personable and cozy than a typical ballroom wedding. Once we chose the venue, everything else fell in to place.

Including the venue, my four most important wedding components were my dress, the invitations, and the photographer. First, my dress was love at first sight. The minute I tried it on, I knew it was for me. I checked that off my list early in the process. Then I started researching invitations, save the dates, wedding programs, and was shocked to see how expensive paper goods can be. I talked to some people at Paper Source and read some DIY blogs and decided to tackle the invitations – letterpress and screenprinting – myself. I am now obsessed with making invitations and cards and anything involving paper. The invitations set the tone for the wedding. A lot of brides overlook invitations, but I think that they deserve a lot of thought, because they really do set the tone. We received so many compliments on our invitations with several people telling us that they were the most beautiful invitations that they have ever seen and they could not wait to see more at the wedding.

Now comes our photographer – Apryl Ann. I found her featured on Ruffled and fell in love with her vintage, whimsical, personal style. We knew she was perfect once we met her. Our photographs will last forever, and we did not want to skimp on the photographer and regret it later. We are only doing this once, and we want the photos to be perfect, and Apryl delivered. We could not be happier with Apryl and her beautiful photos of the most important time of our lives to date.

My advice to other brides is to slow down and enjoy every moment of the day. I had put a year of my life planning the wedding and was so anxious the day of that I feel like I missed out on some moments. I never saw the food display (we are separately upstairs at the reception site before being announced, which was awesome). I never saw family photos that were placed around the house for guests to view. There are guests that I have seen in photos from the wedding that I did not get to see. The night was a blur and over before we knew it, but it was the most perfect night of our lives. Enjoy every minute.

Oh, and our DJ suggested doing a last dance for the evening, and I highly recommend it! It was such a sweet moment and some of my favorite photos from the entire day are of Craig’s tux loosened and me in my Tom’s and we are in such bliss, spinning around the room.

Michelle and Johnny are both teachers at the same school. One day, at a track meet, it started pouring rain. They ran for cover to Johnny’s truck and talked for hours…it’s been love ever since! Their wedding was was held at the Weston Gardens in Forth Worth, Texas. This place is a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. Old stone and brick with lush greenery make this an awesome venue for a hidden garden wedding. The guys get ready on a stone ship while the bride gets ready in a room with oak walls! Absolutely amazing. Vintage lace, blue jars, vintage garden furniture along with some southern aesthetics including the custom cake topper and Johnny’s boots and belt buckle, made this simple yet gorgeous wedding special to them. Michelle found her dress at a thrift store and she and her mother made it sleeveless with a dropped back. It was absolutely perfect.
