Art Deco-Meets-Handmade-Fete Wedding

Vintage Weddings

Photos by:

Adrian Tuazon

Last year, we shared Ali and Jake’s engagement session and today I get to share their wedding! I love seeing how couples’ styles translate into their weddings, and you will love theirs. Adrian Tuazon was once again at task capturing these gorgeous images:

From the bride, Ali (who is also a children’s clothing designer): Our wedding was Art Deco Elegance meets Town Hall fete with a bit of rustic woodland thrown in :) There were lots of vintage silver and gold with touches of olive green and peach. I collected all of the antique silverware for the centerpieces as well as making pretty much everything else. Hand screenprinted napkins with handmade paper flags for the guests. Hand painted signs and tablecloths. Mismatched vintage plates in gold and silver. Homemade bunting and chair wreaths.

I really wanted to get married in a little old church, and Mentone Uniting Church was just darling. We are both Christians so getting married in a church was a must. It had a beautiful small congregation who were so accommodating to our day and the presence of the space was just perfect. It was quiet and rustic, without being too big or too small.

Oakleigh Town Hall has a perfect mix of old art deco style that has been refurbished for more modern uses. Verdant green doors and hardwood polished floors gave it an old style country hall feel and the exterior is just amazing with the carved mechanics institute signage. It had a great stage for the band and a great kitchen for the catering. Doing the wedding on a budget meant that city owned halls were just the perfect price for us also.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? Choose a style and stick with it :) Don’t be afraid to try an expensive idea DIY but leave plenty of time for mistakes.

Engagement Sessions

Longtime Ruffled readers may remember Cath and TJ’s engagement session and wedding in Mornington, Australia shot by Adrian Tuazon. Now Cath’s sister, Ali, is getting married to her beau, Jake. It’s only natural that she recruited the incredible Adrian to photograph their cuteness as they strolled along the beach.

We both agreed that we wanted our wedding to feel like every party we have ever wanted to go to, ever. That meant keeping things casual and fun, low-fuss, and filled with as many nostalgic childish things as possible.

Our theme began as an obsession with collecting old teacup sets, something that I have been doing since I was 19. Over the years I had managed to amass over 100 of them, and these became our gifts for each guest. From there, the theme became really broad, encompassing childhood nostalgia (scrabble piece, vintage Golden Books, lolly buffet, ice-cream van), op-shop jumble sale and traditional country wedding elements like hay bales and crazy dancing.

Start planning/freaking out about DIY projects early in the process to avoid the classic last minute DIY-induced repetitive strain injuries. Tell your fiance at least once every week that no, the wedding will not be too girlie, and yes, he can have his favorite boutique beer at the reception. Enjoy looking at wedding blogs for inspiration but remember that in the end your day will be special to you, not matter how it ends up looking.

As a graphic designer, I believe that great graphic design is in the details {read: spending lots of time at the computer looking at pixels.} If you dont know what a pixel is- congratulations- because that’s why graphic designer types exist! {to save your eyesight} Really, though-design is more than matching colors and picking pretty fonts {but I do have major love for fonts} – it’s about conveying your message to the world with a swirl, a flourish, a dot, a pattern- whatever it takes to creatively encompass your clients vision and send that vision out into the world with impact.

That’s what I try to do. EMPHASIS on TRY. I adore designing and am currently the owner of NOTEDOCCASIONS.COM , an online site catering to everyone who loves having a party. And who doesn’t because as I see it, life’s a party!

Custom invitation design requests are always welcome – we welcome the opportunity to make your event absolutely perfect!
