Continuing with our sixties, bohemiam flower child inspiration, Sarah Winward of Honey of a Thousand Flowers is back this week with yet another utterly gorgeous flower arrangement. She blended a sixties bohemian feel with a modern and fresh aesthetic combining Coneflower, garden roses, sweet potato vine, zinnia, petunia, geranium, and phlox. Thank you Yan Photography for the amazing bouquet photos!

From Sarah: One of my favorite late summer flowers is coneflower, you might know it as Echinacea. It comes in a few different varieties. In this particular shape we get a cream, orange, and a really pretty nutty pink; the pink is my favorite. The center of the flowers stick above the petals making it a bit more interesting than a regular daisy shape, and the natural color combinations are gorgeous. The rust colored centers in the pink variety are sometimes used on their own too, after the petals have fallen.

Coneflower look great in garden type arrangements, they have a nice shape to contrast with other softer looking flowers. I think they have sort of a 60’s flower power vibe to them, and that is where my inspiration for these arrangements came from. I tried to keep the 60’s inspiration subtle so that this design and color palette can be used in a lot of different settings. The hot pink and lime green with hints of orange and purple speaks loudly enough for itself, but I think pairing it with bits of floral patterns would be fun. I see bouquets like this paired with some solid color long maxi skirts or pretty party dress silhouettes for the bridesmaids, and some floral bow ties for the men.

Neutral containers and for the dinner table with these bright colors would give you some room for fun with your napkins, I see a vintage ditsy floral print napkin being pretty with these.

The flowers used in these arrangements are: Coneflower, garden roses, sweet potato vine, zinnia, petunia, geranium, and phlox.

Emily’s vintage wedding dress, veil and makeup evokes her perfectly adorable bridal Twiggy from the 1960s. The groom, James, designed their wedding stationery, from posters to invitations. If you think that was plenty of cute for a wedding, check out their pooch Oliver as the ring bearer. It may or may not have stolen the show.

James and I have known each other for 14 years, and although anyone close to us could have told you that we were a perfect match, it took 11 years for us to finally go from “just friends” to “couple”. James is originally from Tokyo and moved back for five years to go to art school. We always kept in touch, though, and it didn’t take too long after he moved back to the States for us to finally get together. The wait was worth it. We wanted our wedding to be a relaxed, warm, personal affair. We really wanted it to reflect our personalities and feel like a big party. We found the venue first and let the style go from there. We chose Los Angeles because we both love the city (I’m a born and raised Angeleno) and for a while we lived not far from the venue.

Things really came together after James designed the invitations. I have a pretty crafty family and spent a few days with some great ladies making the decorations. My mother had a giant basket of vintage lace she inherited from my late great aunt, and the pieces became a unifying design element. Our invites and the sign in board were inspired by our habit of leaving little drawings and notes on post-its for each other. Anyone who has been to our place has seen them randomly stuck all over the place. We didn’t have a bridal party, but we asked my brother to walk our dog down the aisle and stand up there for us. The photo booth was something we really wanted as well, we knew that we would get some great shots of friends and family, and it added a bit of fun to the reception.

My advice for brides is to start small and let the inspiration go from there. Pick a fabric or one design element you really want to incorporate and things will blossom. Ask for help! People like to help and often have great ideas. I thought I could manage the whole thing but no one can. We didn’t get an event planner, but we did have someone coordinating the day, which was a tremendous help. You really won’t have time to oversee it all on the day of. Take time to pick the right venue, finding somewhere you really love makes all the difference. Pick a photographer whose work you love, too. The big day is such a blur that you won’t have time to really appreciate all the little details you worked so hard on, and seeing wonderful pictures after the fact feels amazing! Above all else, stay true to yourself and your idea of the perfect day. You will feel overwhelmed and stressed and worried but just remember that nothing that can go wrong can ruin the most important part, you are in love and getting married to someone who loves you! OH – and have fun!

One of the most exciting questions of the past few weeks has finally been answered, and we couldn’t be more pleased! Kate Middleton (or shall we say Duchess Catherine) chose Sarah Burton of fashion house Alexander McQueen to design her wedding gown, and we couldn’t help but see a parallel between Kate’s gown and Grace Kelly’s timeless lace wedding dress. Kate has brought modest simplicity back to bridal sophistication, from her simple tiara to her small posy lily of the valley bouquet. Classic brides, take note from these royal brides of times past:

For most wedding connoisseurs, the word “theme” has become the target of contemptuousness. Some are inclined to go slightly overboard, and the result leaves little to the imagination. When we opened our inbox to find Rebecca Hansen’s St. Patrick’s Day-inspired photoshoot, our preconceptions were blown out of the water. Rebecca was able to take one of my favorite color combinations for wedding bouquets, green and white, and turn it into a jaw-dropping, ever-so-sweet wedding shoot. Don’t miss the gallery here!

From the event stylist, Rebecca: This is a styled wedding shoot I’ve been working on for a little while. The idea behind it is that you can have a theme wedding without being tacky and going overboard, the theme here being a St. Patrick’s Day wedding. I wanted to use lots of green and white with gold accents. I love the look and feel of paper so I wanted to incorporate that as well. I think it turned out looking really airy and fresh and not themey at all! I love it. The bride’s dress is a vintage 60′s dress that is just adorable. Almost all the tableware is vintage from etsy.

I’ve been trying to do a lot more work for myself this year. Things to help me grow as a photographer and wedding professional. I got the idea for this shoot when I saw a gorgeous, but simple green and white bouquet on another photographer’s blog. I really love the green and white color combo. It’s really versatile and fresh. You can use green and white for winter, spring, summer. I wanted to do a theme but not make it look to themey and blatantly St. Patrick’s. I started getting lots of green and white items but felt like it needed a little extra pop to help it catch peoples’ eyes and make it feel a little warmer, so I went with gold.

I really love hands on projects so I did most of the preparation myself. I made paper chains for the “photobooth” area over a few days. It didn’t turn out as great as I had hoped but that’s ok, that happens. I made the 4 layer cake and covered it with paper leaves I had cut out from a thicker watercolor paper, with a stencil. It was just a mix, with raspberries and buttercream frosting (it was really good!).

I used etsy as a major resource for finding a lot of the items used. I would encourage brides to look there for any vintage or handmade items the might need for their weddings.

I met the florist Becca Olcott a few weeks ago in boston and she is a dream. I showed her what I had for the shoot and just told her “lots of green and white” and she got it just perfect! She was really fun to work with and so adorable.

Kirsten Bingham is one of my best friends and designed the paper pieces for the shoot. I didn’t have to give her any direction other than green, white, modern. She does amazing work, and she knows me so well that I knew she would do it just perfectly. The models, Casey and Troy, are some of our good friends here in Boston and they’re great photographers as well. They were good sports to put up with all of my shenanigans and go to the beach in the cold.

From Lora: Our style is eclectic, laid back, vintage, alternative. We had a dj spinning old funk and soul records, I wore a tea length Audrey Hepburn inspired 50′s wedding dress from a designer in LA, and the food is all Southern Indiana with an emphasis on local and organic; barbecue, corn on the cob, lemon poppyseed cake, Upland brew, etc. It’s nonstuffy and fun. We hope :)

From the bride: We wanted something completely unique and ethereal. Lots of trees, a sense of being in another time and place entirely. Like a fairytale or a myth. We wanted a great amount of attention to detail, and the feeling of complete peace and nature all around. We aimed for a natural/organic style mixed with a strong sense of the past….everything from the 60′s to the 1800′s, to the time of King Arthur!

Our colors were grey blue, sage green, and antique wheat. All of our lace tablecloth overlays were borrowed; many were quite old.

A John Lennon and Yoko Ono inspired engagement session, what else could I ask for? This 1960s inspired shoot styled by April Foster of April Foster Events is a feast to my eyes. From April: “Lora and Mike are both in theater. Their quirky sense of style combined with their fun personalities made this engagement session both unique and incredibly fun. Prior to the shoot, I got to know Lora and Mike a little better. I found out the following: they both love theater, music, celebrities from the 60s and 70s, the outdoors, and anything a little different. The day of the shoot, Lora, Mike and I stopped at Goodwill to pick out some additional outfits. We loaded up the car with the props I picked out earlier in the week at various shops. We were headed to a great sunflower patch but had to make one stop first – to get a shot of Lora and Mike in a bathtub.”

Shot by Megan W Photography (whose work you may remember from this equally gorgeous Ice Cream Parlor Session I posted last year). Big thanks to April and Megan for sharing this shoot with us!

Happy Monday! Hope everyone is having a fantastic Memorial Day if you’re in the U.S. I promised I’d be back tomorrow, but couldn’t wait to share these wedding invitations inspired by Bob Dylan’s first album, The Freewheelin’ in 1963. Barb and Josh had their engagement session inspired by the cover, and how did Josh propose to Barb – singing one of Bob Dylan’s songs of course!

From Maia of Toast Photography:
The whole theme of their engagement session was around Bob Dylan, specifically The Freewheelin’ cover. Bob Dylan and Suze had a dynamic relationship, as is the case of Josh and Barb. He proposed to her on thanksgiving, surrounded by their “family”; aka, friends, and as the circle was coming around on all friends discussing what they are thankful for, Josh started reciting a song from Bob Dylan before getting down on his knees and proposing to Barb, that she was what made me love this song out of them all. They truly are an amazing couple, and you can see it in the photographs. The concept of the engagement photo were on two specific concepts, Bob Dylan and the late nights they spent at cafe’s getting to know one another when they first started dating. The Freewheelin’ photoshoot came together brilliantly from their wardrobe, the album cover itself, and the random found blue VW bus I saw in the location we were shooting. The owner was kind enough to unlock the car to let us shoot in!

From the bride, Callie:
We got married last November, in a cozy historic lodge in Berkeley, California. We fell in love with the lodge the moment we walked in. With wood floors, vaulted ceilings, a wood burning fireplace and located in the middle of the secluded Berkeley Hills, part of the East Bay National Park District, we new it would be ideal for our 1960′s woodland themed wedding. And it was indeed super cozy and intimate. We had about 75 of our closest friends and family attend an extremely short ceremony lasting just over five minutes and officiated by my husband’s favorite cousin followed by a vegetarian supper paired with delicious wines from my hometown of Santa Ynez, CA (made famous by the film Sideways), backed by 1960′s folk and rock soundtrack (think Neil Young, Love, and the Zombies) spun by my two girlfriends who I used to DJ with back in my early 20′s. We walked down the aisle to 13 by Big Star and walked away to La la la love you by the Pixies.

Her story is so good, I didn’t have the hear to edit shorter. It’s that worth it!
Our vintage inspired wedding was extremely DIY, we are fortunate enough to have a circle of super creative friends who were able to provide at little and/or no cost to us the photography, music, and decorations. My bestie made our amazing table seating assignments which were individual trees with leaves hanging off featuring our guest’s name and the “tree” they would be sitting at. The tables had names like Oak, Fir, Pine, etc. She also made the boutonnieres out of tiny red toadstool mushrooms, acorns and leaves… they ended up so cute, even my Dad approved!

The woodland vintagey theme kind of took on a mind of its own once I found my vintage wedding dress which I should add, is a story in itself. I found it via a vintage dresses feature they were running on Good Morning America. It’s a 1969 Bill Blass dress originally modeled by Twiggy, that was actually featured on the show! I found my patent leather 60′s inspired Chloe heels on eBay for just under $300, I believe they were originally sold for around $700, so I felt I really lucked out on those. At 4 inches, they were surprisingly comfortable! I chose to wear ivory opaque tights with my dress which I’m quite glad I did. I thought they completed the mod 60′s carnaby street look I was going for, plus, they made me feel a little less self conscious about the length of my dress. I let my two best friends who stood up for me choose their dresses themselves. We had a palette of gold, mustard, chocolate, black and ivory. They both found their dresses at Anthropologie and though they were mismatched, I loved the way they looked together. They were both knee length, but still longer than my dress and they both wore black opaque tights.

For the photobooth, I brought several polaroid cameras I had from home (I’ve collected vintage cameras since college) and we set up a photo station complete with gold gel pens, a framed sign sharing tips & instructions, glue sticks, and a wood based polaroid album where our guests dutifully attached their photo with a short note- such a great souvenir from the evening!

Over all, our wedding went off without a hitch and I’m so proud of the efforts of all our friends & family that made the night so special and awesome for us, that I felt inclined to share it with other future brides who are in the midst of all the chaos, frustration, & excitement that comes with planning a wedding…

Thanks Callie for sharing your day with us! We wish you and Jay a lifetime of happiness together!
