Romantic Southern Wedding

Bright colors, farm tables, rocking chairs, comfort food — all the fixin’s of a quality Southern wedding, and all can be seen in Emily and Max’s South Carolina wedding. A top-tier team of vendors came together to make this beauty happen, including Tim Willoughby, OOH Events, Branch Design Studio, and, of course, a guest appearance of the couple’s beloved pug, Winston.

From the bride, Emily: I envisioned my wedding to be if Kate Spade and Jonathan Adler had a love child and it came out speaking with a Southern twang. We wanted it to be Southern and laid back with bright colors, good food, and music that made everyone want to dance! To add to the Spanish moss and marsh scenery at the Creek Club, we had farm tables, mason jars, and comfort food (pulled pork sliders, ham biscuits, shrimp & grits) to bring in the southern vibe and open seating, food stations, rocking chairs, and a photo booth on the porch to create a laid back atmosphere for our guests. But most importantly we wanted it to represent us, so we wrote our own vows, our reading was an “Ode to Emily & Max” which Max’s sister wrote versus a traditional reading, and our pug Winston was in the wedding. I wanted people to come to our wedding and go ‘this is so Max & Emily.’

Our color scheme was mint & shades of coral. We wanted the colors to pop but also be subtle – like how my bridesmaid’s dresses were neutral champagne, but they all had mint necklaces and bright reds and corals in the bouquets. My mother found the perfect mint fabric and made custom runners for all of the farm tables and made pillows for the rocking chairs out of fabric that was the print from the back of our wedding invitations (which was a handpainted print by Lucky Pennie Paperie). My mother also made my veil. I wanted badly to wear something of hers on my wedding day and she had this gorgeous cap veil with an adorable bow on the top, but unfortunately the veil’s tulle and lace had yellowed over time. Being her crafty self, my mom used the bow from her veil, which was still a beautiful ivory color, and attached it to the veil she made for me.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Invest in a photographer. Our photos captured so many moments, embraces, and laughs that I will never want to forget. Tim Willoughby’s images evoke emotions and really transport you to that moment in time. Also make an effort into planning the day getting ready to be a relaxing and fun experience. I had my best friends, close family, and dog along with a spread of food, plenty of champagne, and 80s music playing. I was relaxed and happy.

Wedding Music:
Processional: “Here Comes the Sun,” The Beatles
First Dance: “Crazy Love,” Van Morrison
Father/Daughter Dance: “My Girl,” The Temptations
For our ceremony music, I wanted a flamenco/Spanish guitar player. I envisioned this sort of Woody Allen movie scenario. Luckily Nikolai Shiviaz was the perfect musician. He played “Here Comes the Sun” for the processional and more upbeat sambas and Spanish jazz during the cocktail hour. Our band MVP was amazing. They played everything from Motown to Beyonce.
