Rhode Island Sunset Wedding

“Holy crap” is what came to mind when we first laid our eyes on this Rhode Island wedding. It’s just one of those weddings that define sense of style to a T, which goes hand in hand with a glamorously laid back seaside fete. With Lev Kuperman on board, we had no doubt the images would be as breathtaking as the wedding itself. We love their seating chart idea: vintage brooches for the ladies and tie clips for the gents!

Karla and Phil are two of most kind, warm, and stylish people I know, and their wedding, in the quiet Rhode Island town of Bristol was truly an amazing event. The wedding was set on a pier off of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and the reception took place under a tent on that same pier. The couple’s portraits were taken in nearby Colt State Park and they got ready at the Bristol Harbor Inn. The bride and groom had a traditional New England Clambake for the reception and celebrated with 100+ of their closest friends and family. The escort cards were attached to vintage brooches for the ladies and tie clips for the men. The beautiful stage was set against the amazing Summer sunset of Rhode Island and created a sun-soaked wedding that still gives me goosebumps. Oh, and Karla is also the singer in the 80’s cover band The Fades (!!!), who rocked the party late into the night.

Venue: Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI / Photographer: Lev Kuperman / Wedding Dress: Jenny Packham / Groom’s Tux: Suitsupply / Florist: Greenlion Design / Wedding Band: The Fades / Clambake: Compton Clambakes

  • I am just loving the purple and blue jewel toned colors in the bouquet and then that trickled into the centerpieces vases! The vintage brooches and tie clips? A perfect detail!

  • The bride here! Thanks for featuring our wedding! The invitations are from Alethea + Ruth for Minted.com, called “Celebrate Florals.”

  • Love Lev, he was the photographer for our wedding as well! Not only does he have a truly unique eye, but he is also just a fantastic guy!

  • This is a beautiful wedding! Love the idea of the antique brooches and tie clips! Any idea where to find those tie clips??

  • Love it! Would love more insight from the bride on her book centrepiece idea. What do the years represent?

  • Love this wedding! I wonder what the significance is of the centerpieces. The year coupled with the photos in the books is so cool!

  • The bride here! Rachel, we found all of our tie clips at a flea market that had a few vintage jewelry vendors. We managed to piece together the whole collection in one day between two different vendors. We bought out almost all of their tie clips. They were a huge hit! Every single guy wore his right away–handy on a breezy RI night–and months later, we are still getting photos from friends wearing their tie clips at other events.

  • Jocelyn, we had a ’30s themed wedding and used the old books for table markers. It was a DIY project—as was most of our wedding. Each table was a year, instead of a number, with a photo and caption of something important from that year. We picked years, events and photos that meant something to us personally, printed them ourselves and taped them to the books. We’re both avid runners, so table 1936 was Jesse Owens dazzling at the Olympics, Phil loves art so table 1937 was the year Picasso painted “Guernica,” Phil is a real estate developer in NYC so 1930 was the year the Chrysler Building was completed, we got engaged at Disney World so table 1928 was the year Mickey Mouse debuted, our sweetheart table was 1934 with a photo of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who were the inspiration for our personal style, and so on. We had more than 10 tables so we dipped into the late ’20s and early ’40s too. The ones you see pictured here are 1939 when “The Wizard of Oz” premiered, 1931 with photos of Ella Fitzgerald and Cab Calloway as titans of swing, and 1929 as the year Ernest Hemingway published “A Farewell to Arms.” (I work as a singer and writer, so these ones held special meaning for me.) We tried to pick things that spanned art, architecture, music, movies, literature, sports: all the things we love. Sorry for the long-winded answer. I put so much work and thought into it!

  • I am getting married and have hired a group called The extra hands . They do all the behind the scenes photos, hair make up, and wardrobe help…They stay for 10 hours during your wedding day… has anyone else used them.. the 3 women are very nice and very energetic and enthusiastic… my event is in Rhode Island.. they where recommended by a T.L.C. reality show personality.. It will be nice to have someone touching up make all day , and taking the photos that the other photographers miss out on. I am changing my dress , they suggested the entire bridal party change along with me to lighten up the evening and give everyone a chance to dance and have fun..they sent dress suggestions and themes…i like the group was wondering if anyone else used them.. they work in nyc, Rhode island, Boston, Florida, and Cali. i contacted them via email and received info immediately which i loved..Theextrahands@aol.com
