Modern Brooklyn Wedding

We’ve never made a secret of the fact that we just adore New York weddings – especially ones in Brooklyn. Lindsey and Brett are originally from the Midwest, but fell in love with the charm of New York instantaneously and wanted their wedding day to reflect the relaxed coolness with which Brooklyn has become synonymous. I’m telling you, Chaz Cruz, Jove Meyer, and Sprout Home absolutely nailed this one.

From the bride, Lindsey: For our wedding inspiration we tried to keep things simple and inviting. We are both designers and wanted to not overwhelm ourselves with designing every detail. We are both from the Midwest and moved to New York and fell in love with it. We live in Williamsburg and love the mood and the food of restaurants like Diner, Dumont and Le Barricou. It was important to us to have our wedding in the city we call home, and we were very excited to be inviting our guest to our city and really wanted to make it feel like home for them – I think that was our main inspiration.

We wanted it to make our guest feel at home in the city we call home. We mainly tried to keep things as simple as possible. Throughout our wedding planning process we tried to keep as many things local and simple as we could. For the decorations we opted for simple wild looking arrangements on the tables and around the venue. I worked with a friend on coming up with the general look I wanted and then had a group help assemble the day of. We gathered our flowers from all over. We got our main flowers from the flower district an the Union Square Green Market. Then for foliage we took clippings from the Southside Community Garden, where we are members. We also bought a rosemary bush that we took clippings of to place in the napkin of our silver wear setting.

Other simple touches we had were: a polaroid guest book, name cards that we hand typed on my grandfathers typewriter. Table numbers done by a friend. And another fun activity we set out was a sketchbook from the Brooklyn library Sketchbook Project. We had everyone do a little doodle and then submitted our sketchbook to the tour.. Our welcome gift for our out of town guest, which was a neighborhood guide we created and a bottle of Brooklyn Brewery (another local favorite of ours). My personal favorite thing we did was our guest gifts. We loved the idea of all the cheesy NYC tourist gifts and wanted to create one of our own. So everyone at our wedding got a mug that said, “I went to Lindsey and Brett’s wedding and all I got was this lousy mug.”

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Keep it simple and outsource! As designers in a 5-month engagement we knew we could drive ourselves crazy trying to design ever detail, so we outsourced as much as we could and picked a few areas that were important for us to add our touch.
