Some weddings exude so much personality and love they just make my heart pitter-patter. Phoebe and Scott’s wedding does just that, with the most amazing quilt handmade by the bride, the sweetest invitations made by the groom, and perhaps my favorite bridal bouquet so far this year. For all of those who want to plan an outdoor celebration yet fear the uncertainty of the weather, this post proves that, rain or no rain, you can still have the wedding of your dreams. Be sure to check out every sweet image from amelia + dan photography in the gallery!
Phoebe Lewis and Scott Harrell married on Sullivan’s Island not once, but TWICE in one day! Both ceremonies were delightful, and it was such a pleasure to be a part of their wedding day. They decided to go ahead with the outdoor ceremony they envisioned before the skies unleashed the rain, and then had another ceremony indoors once all the guests arrived.
They are both SUPER talented artists. Phoebe made the most gorgeous quilt I have ever seen for the portrait backdrop, along with the smaller framed quilt. Scott designed their endearing invitations, which were incorporated in other aspects of the decor. All of the people involved made a double ceremony wedding seem par for the course, and Ooh! Events kept everyone happy and calm.
From the bride, Phoebe: I wanted our wedding to have a personal, handmade feel. We had originally been planning a private ceremony for just the two of us and a small reception to follow for our families but things spiraled (happily!) out of control and we ended up having a bit over a hundred guests.
Our colour scheme was aqua and red. My husband is a graphic designer and designed our save the date cards, invitations and sandwich boards that we put on the corner with our wedding ‘logo’ directing guests to the entrance to the wedding. I cross stitched a small piece that sat on the table with the guest book. The best handmade piece that we still use every day was a king sized quilt that I made as a backdrop for some of our wedding pictures. It went immediately on our bed the day after the wedding.
About the venue: I’ve known the couple that I work for since I was a teen – they’re sort of like parents to me – and when they heard that Scott and I were getting married, she started squealing. They have a gorgeous home on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina that includes four houses with adjoining yards and they offered us the use of it for the ceremony and reception. A huge rainstorm started one minute before the wedding was planned. My most excellent wedding planner, Alison, was so on top of things that she suggested that we get married once in the garden as we had planned so that we could get the pictures that we wanted. Our families were already there so we gathered everyone quickly and had one small wedding in the garden at 5.15pm and another ceremony in the house at 6.30pm once all of the guests had arrived. Alison was able to move the entire wedding reception – all catering and bar setups – inside the house. It turned out beautifully. Our photographer ended up taking two sets of pictures – color ones for the ceremony in the garden and black and whites of the ceremony in the house. I couldn’t have asked for more from everyone involved and we have great stories to tell!
