Handmade North Carolina Wedding

Leah and Casey are a couple of newlyweds after our own hearts — not only did they tackle endless DIY projects with the help of friends and family, they’re pretty much pros when it comes to thinking outside the box. The bride found her wedding gown in a vintage shop’s nightgown section and had it altered into the stunning short number she wore on her big day! They married at Wilkesboro Community College and ended up with these amazing photos from Alively Photography.

From the bride, Leah: I wanted our wedding to be laid back and fun — a big party — so we chose to do a circus theme. My wedding day was honestly perfect. I just wanted it to be a huge celebration with all our friends and that is exactly what I got. I had so much fun and felt so comfortable and relaxed the entire day. I had so much help from so many people that I never felt stressed out or worried that something would go wrong. I remember when I first saw everything put together… I knew it would look great, but I had no idea how beautiful it would be. It was so incredible driving away that night with my new husband. I can honestly say that was the happiest day of my life!

DIY projects included the chandeliers (got them from thrift store and painted them), curtains & bow ties (made by my mom), striped dividers (my dad made them and painted them for me), favors, invitations and table cloths… we spray painted our silhouettes on.

  • It’s ironic that you chose to post a NC wedding today, of all days. Would love to see more (if any) same sex marriages on this site.

  • I’m with Yuri – the wedding is lovely, but the timing is unfortunate, and maybe even damning. A celebration of marriage from a state which has just given a fatal blow to human rights, justice and love itself is tacky.

    • Julia,

As both a lover of weddings and a local North Carolina resident/voter, I was deeply saddened to see the passing of Amendment One yesterday. The publishing of this wedding is by no means intended as any sort of commentary on the amendment or as plaudit for North Carolina’s state Constitution, but rather a celebration of Leah and Casey’s lovely wedding day. Ruffled is fortunate to have an audience that is amazingly culturally rich, worldly, and open-minded, and is equally as fortunate to have featured unique + stylish + fun weddings regardless of color, body type, religion, sexual orientation, or geography — and we will always have pride in doing so. We will continue to commemorate all unions of love and champion the repeal of Amendment One.

  • where did you get your lights that are strung at the barn?

  • Ashely,

Your response was very thoughtful and well-stated – thank you.
