Handcrafted Brooklyn Wedding

The amount of love, time, and design that went into planning Justine and Matt’s wedding from Joyeuse Photography just blows me away every time I look at it. From the gorgeous bouquets by LeeAnne Rickey to the paper flower boutonnieres and the temporary tattoos, every single detail is complete and utter perfection, and I couldn’t be more in love!

From the bride, Justine: Matt and I wanted to have a celebration with our friends and family that was relaxed and fun for everyone. We wanted to have people moving around the space, mingling and participating in activities as opposed to having assigned seats where they’d sit and watch us entertain them (I’m not so into being the center of attention).

Matt and I have a blog called the buddy exclusive for which he draws an illustration and I provide dialogue/commentary each day, so we used that as a theme for some of the activities, which included a station where people could write in dialogue for different illustrations Matt had drawn, a station where people could apply temporary tattoos all designed by different friends, a “phone-a-buddy” station where people could call a number and leave us a message and a photo booth for which we used the back ‘speakeasy’ room at The Green Building. There was also a lot of hand drawn/painted signage to mark everything. A friend of ours also had a great idea to have floral-drawn table runners that people could color in and we ordered custom colored Crayola crayons to place on each table. We just wanted our wedding to reflect us – our personalities and our styles – and we wanted everyone to have a great time.

Some adjectives that describe the look of our wedding: cute, sweet, playful, handcrafted. Our color scheme was sort of a pink/coral, teal and grey combo. There were a lot of DIY decorations included; fortunately we have an amazingly talented community of friends who contributed tassels for balloons, bunting for tables, handmade signage for activity stations, temporary tattoos designed by friends and printed at home, and DIY scratch-off tickets.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I think I realized too late that when it comes to DIY projects it’s very important to prioritize what’s important to complete over what would just be nice to have. Also, if you have people around you who are willing to help, don’t hesitate to ask.
