Vintage Mountain Wedding

This gorgeous, seasonal wedding has amazing ties to the bride’s family history. The couple got married at the same cabin where her parents married and she’s wearing her grandmother’s 1950’s wedding dress. How sweet is that? Thanks to The Parsons for the photos!

I have always been obsessed with colors, so fall was the perfect time of year to get married. Our colors were: mustard yellow, teal, brown, and green. We used windows to symbolize home, family, community, friendship, openness, etc. We used antique windows (found for free or cheap on craigslist) as decorations.

Since the wedding was at one of the most beautiful places in the world, our family cabin in Colorado, we wanted to keep things looking as natural as possible. I grew up playing in the woods as a child. My parents got married at this cabin, and so did my cousin about a year and a half ago. There are so many lovely memories wrapped up in this place – it is a part of who I am, and now I get to add the beautiful memory of getting married! I wore my grandma’s dress and used her wedding cake topper, and we did a lot of thrift store shopping overall.

Just about everything was a DIY project! I hand-painted mason jars for reception glasses, aspen candles (my friend cut the aspen chunks, and my dad wood-burned the bottom of each one for families to take home), home-made billy button flowers, hairpieces, fabric garland, and much more.

Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? HAVE FUN, and be creative. enjoy the process. get people involved! don’t be afraid to look at thrift stores and craigslist – there are GREAT decorations and ideas to be found for free or cheap. start a notebook or journal as soon as possible to keep track of ideas and inspiration. Don’t get caught up on “perfect” – your wedding will be what it will be, and sometimes imperfections and unexpected changes make it better than you ever could have planned

  • Last picture is so sweet 🙂
Such a beautiful dress… I have my grandmother’s in the loft somewhere but it’s so delicate I would be so scared that the yellowed lace would simply fall apart! But it it so beautiful – full length 1920’s lace with full headress clipped behind the ears… She looked stunning!

  • These are just lovely… from the beautiful dress to the color palette. I adore the image of her at the vanity outside. All of it is so natural and gorgeous!

  • What a beautiful wedding! And I love that it was mainly done by the bride and her family. It just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a fortune to make a gorgeous and memorable event.

  • love the candid shots especially the dancing and the mirror in the field

  • This is one of my favorite weddings ever! The second I saw it on We are the Parsons blog it made my Friday Favs and I knew it would be no time before a full feature was done on it. Love it!

  • Incredible. That bride is the cutest thing and that dress is amazing! I really really want it for my next high school dance.. haha. How amazing is that mountain setting too. Absolutely gorgeous!

  • This has to be my favorite wedding ever! Everything is so beautiful – the photography is stunning. I’m bookmarking it so I can refer back for ideas when I’m planning my own wedding someday!

  • I had to pleasure to attend this wedding, and I can attest that everything was as honest and natural as the picture and story indicate!! Congrats K & E!!

  • I really enjoy this photography and the whole shoot is very amazing, however not all the pictures will load and only on this one and i am not quite sure why? if its the website or my computer.

  • Hello!
I have a rather strange request… I adore the bride’s dress SO MUCH that I’m having a similar dress made. I had a few questions about the material of the dress and I’m wondering if it might be possible to get a question to the bride??
    Thanks soooo much.
    Mary

  • First of all, thanks to everyone for such nice comments! It means a lot….this was a very special day for me. 🙂

Mary – I am honored that you liked my dress so much. I just now happened to see your comment so hopefully it’s not too late. What questions do you have? I will try my best to answer them!

    Emily (bride)

  • Wow, Emily. What a surprise to see your reply! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to write back. (I sooo appreciate it.) I hope you don’t mind me picking your brain about your dress…as I realize it’s something so personal. It’s just so lovely that I couldn’t let go of the idea of creating something with a simliar look/feel. My seamstress, as experienced as she is, is having a little trouble. 🙂 Mind if I ask you a few questions?

    1. We’ve been trying to sort out what makes up the top half of your dress. Is the lace stitched to tulle fabric? If it is tulle, is there more than one layer?
    2. How many layers of tulle make up the skirt? Is it gathered at the waistline?

Ok, I think that’s about all of them. 🙂 Again, thank you. Emily, your wedding was superb – and the location. Wow!

  • Hi Mary, I think it’s great you are using this dress as inspiration! I felt so lucky to be able to wear it (and that it fit too!), and my grandma will be excited to hear that it’s use keeps expanding. I’m so honored that people have enjoyed our wedding pictures – it was SUCH a fun day, and we had a lot of help from very talented family and friends.

I am no sewing expert, but I will try to answer the questions as best I can. The top of the dress is lace sewn to one layer of tulle (the tulle is a very fine tulle), overlaying base layer of the dress. The skirt is made up of two layers of fine, flowy tulle, and underneath, again, is the base layer (a thick, satin, type material). The dress originally had an additional, very stiff and poofy layer of tulle, but I had that taken out since I thought it was too fancy for an outdoor wedding in the sticks. 🙂 The skirt is gathered at the waistline.

I am sure your wedding will be wonderful – I’d love to see a picture! Good luck!

  • Hello again Emily,
Wow, thanks again. Your input is much appreciated. It’s especially helpful to know that the tulle is gathered at the waist, and that the top layer was also tulle. 🙂

I love that your family and friends were able to provide you with so much help/support. They must be talented bunch!

Indeed, your grandmother’s dress has been such an inspiration – it’s really good to know that she’ll be excited about that.

I’d be more than happy to send along photos when it’s all done! I don’t think I can attach a photo to this site, so as an alternative, I’ll leave you my email address: theversionmary@gmail.com. If you’re comfortable with sending me a way that I could email you photos, I’d be more than happy to.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Oh wow! I love love love that dress!

Hopefully when I get married I can find a similar dress. Where would one look for a 1950’s Wedding Dress?

  • Wow! I just found this post through another blog and it is SO BEAUTIFUL. I love this wedding. I am planning and hoping to move to Colorado next year and this post has so many of my dreams wrapped up in it. The scenery and landscape of Colorado- the wedding dress- hopefully my future lies there. The happy dancing. I hope changes lie before me that will bring happiness to my life. I hope. I HOPE. “Never give up” I’m trying, so, so hard.

  • I am planning an outdoor wedding in the mountains of Georgia! I love your sweet little wedding!!!! The dress is absolutely perfect for my theme. I love it so much! I was wondering if you could give me some details or a brand or something so I can try to find a dress like that. It is simply beautiful!

    Thank you!
