Black and Gold Calgary Wedding

Never ever will I tire of a black and gold color palette. Not only does it reference one of our very favorite eras – the Art Deco period, but it’s endlessly chic. Lisa and Colin wisely chose Westinghouse Foundry to house their ceremony and reception, and brought along Jarusha Brown to capture the events of the day!

From the bride, Lisa: In terms of the overall look of the wedding, I (a graphic designer) and my husband (a commercial photographer) referenced the Art Deco period, combined with a mixture of warm industrial and bits of quirky elements. The space itself was very dark and industrial, with mixes of architectural salvaged pieces. The venue suited us very well as it is similar to our own design aesthetic. We were looking for a space that felt unique and special in Calgary, that didn’t feel like typical “Calgary” if that makes sense.

In terms of the overall look of the wedding, I set mood boards and colour palettes. The theme referenced the glamorousness of the Art Deco period, with a mix of warm industrial and bits of quirky elements. The space itself was very dark and had mixes of architectural salvaged pieces. The bridesmaids’ dresses were a charcoal grey, the men wore black and white tuxes, and the accents were lots of gold and crystal touches for some glam. Overall fairly neutral palette, with hits of metallic, not a lot of colour. Lots of contrasting textures and materials. I also collected vintage glassware and vases for flowers and candles over the engagement year from various vintage shops that helped with the overall unique feel.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? Set your budget and try and stick to it. We had been given a wedding budget spreadsheet from a co-worker and was it ever helpful. I believe Real Simple Magazine offers budget spreadsheets you can use and download as well. Also, don’t be afraid or feel bad to delegate. You cannot do it all on your own, even if you really want to. Enlist friends and family to help out. The amount of work and tasks that have to be done can seem overwhelming, but if you make lists, delegate tasks as much as possible, especially the last couple of weeks leading up to the wedding, you can relax (a little) before the big day. Our artistic friends helped us create over 100 paper flowers for our Photo Booth back drop, we were so grateful.

Enjoy every moment on your wedding day. Soak in all of the love in the room and don’t forget that everyone at your wedding is there to celebrate in YOUR love, and wants YOU to succeed and have a great time. Hopefully that alleviates some pressure. It can go by so quickly, so really try and be present during the day and evening. Lastly, Invest in great photography. A truly great photographer will capture your day and document each detail well so you can look back and enjoy all of those memories. It is so worth it after all the hard work you put into the preparation of your big day. We were so lucky to have Jarusha – an extremely talented photographer and friend capture our special day.
